We're so stoked to have Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound as our guest on No Simple Road this week!For guitarist Nick Millevoi, all manner of music can be a source of inspiration, including bachelor-pad “exotica” albums of the 1950s, surf-rock records of the '60s or even old Hollywood cowboy tunes – at least if those influences are put into a modernist compositional and improvisational blender. Millevoi's usual outfit, the Crazy Horse-meets-Coltrane band Desertion Trio, has released four ultra-potent albums since 2016. But he was inspired by his nostalgic sonic fascinations to compose a fun set of tunes to perform with frequent keyboard partner Ron Stabinsky, dubbing their duo project Grassy Sound. The pair's debut album of those songs – The Sounds of Grassy Sound – will be released, digitally and on vinyl, via Destiny Records on April 22, 2022. The disc features such Millevoi-penned highlights as the groovy album-opener “Skylark” and the melody-rich “Lu Fran,” both of which showcase his gritty electric-guitar lyricism and Stabinsky's Hammond B-3 swirl. Then there's “Flitzer,” an essay in bent surf guitar that has a noisy improv section with a Twilight Zone air. Mostly Other People Do The Killing vuelve a publicar una grabación cinco años después: en 2017 publicaron una grabación en septeto (Loafer’s Hollow), y otra en trío (Paint); sus primeras obras fueron en formato de cuarteto, incluyendo al trompetista Peter Evans y el saxofonista Jon Irabagon. La nueva grabación es en formato trío: a Moppa Elliott, líder y compositor del grupo, le acompañan Kevin Shea (el baterista que está en MOPDTK desde su primera grabación), y el pianista Ron Stabinsky. Disasters Vol.1 incluye ocho temas más una toma alternativa que toman sus títulos de localidades de Pennsylvania en las que han ocurrido desastres de lo más diverso como incendios, huracanes o inundaciones. La portada recuerda a la de Motions & Emotions de Oscar Peterson. Es habitual que las portadas del grupo rindan homenaje a portadas de discos clásicos. "Centralia" toma el nombre de una ciudad que en 1981 tenía más de 1000 habitantes; en el año 2000 tenía 1 habitante en su censo; en la actualidad cuenta con unos diez vecinos. El motivo es que en 1962 comenzó un incendio en una veta expuesta de carbón, que se expandió por todas las minas que había en el subsuelo del pueblo. Se prevé que este incendio se extinga en 2267 aproximadamente: no hay ningún plan para extinguir el incendio de una veta de unos trece kilómetros de extensión. Este desastre ha aparecido en documentales, programas de televisión y videojuegos. Ahora, esta ciudad fantasma también tiene un tema propio. Our guest today, guitarist Nick Millevoi. To quote his bio, “Nick Millevoi is a guitarist and composer whose music searches for the sonic cracks between jazz, rock and roll, noise, and modern composition.” Nick has performed with Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, the duo Archer Spade with trombonist Dan Blacksberg as well as making five full-length albums with the trio Many Arms. Since 2016, Nick's main vehicle is The Desertion Trio, featuring Johnny deBlase on bass and Kevin Shea on drums. Their first two records also featured Jamie Saft on organ and their third, the just-released TWILIGHT TIME on the Long Song label features guest stars Ron Stabinsky on organ and Sun Ra Arkestra vocalist Tara Middleton. It's a collection of radically reworked tunes from the oldies era and has already won notice from Rolling Stone magazine, who listed the new record's title cut as a “Song You Need to Know” in their May issue. Nick has drawn a lot of press over the years, he also writes for a number of guitar magazines, but I never really read his origin story On today's interview we talk about Millevoi's earliest music loves, playing his 8th grade graduation party, confronting the jazz curriculum in college, deflecting law school, touring with Many Arms, the music of Neil Young, Nirvana and Dick Dale, the inspirational Wildwood New Jersey, making the new record and future records he is destined to make.

En HDO 495 escuchamos cuatro grabaciones publicadas en Hot Cup Records, el sello de Moppa Elliott, contrabajista, educador y líder de los imprescindibles Mostly Other People Do The Killing. Suena en primer lugar Harder On The Outside, lo nuevo del guitarrista Jon Lundbom, grabación en la que Elliott participa como contrabajista. Tras esta potente propuesta, suenan dos temas de cada uno de los discos que integran Jazz Band /Rock Band / Dance Band, que se publica en formato de doble CD y triple LP. Las tres grabaciones son muy interesantes y diversas entre sí, y muestran el trabajo de Moppa Elliott como compositor. Advancing On a Wild Pitch está interpretado por la Jazz Band y, como su nombre indica, es la propuesta jazzísticamente más ortodoxa, en la que se incluye algún tema que forma parte del repertorio de los MOPDTK, interpretado sin el carácter iconoclasta de este supergrupo. Acceleration Due To Gravity explora con la Dance Band distintas aproximaciones a la música de baile moderna, incluyendo estilos como el hip-hop o el r’n’b. Finalmente Unspeakable Garbage es una aproximación a la música rock de los años 80, en la que participa the hardest blowing man in the scene, Mister Dr. Rocks.
