"Looking back to look forward" could be the motto of this playlist. It kicks off with a blaxploitation tinged scorcher of a song from an upcoming Charles Kynard re-release, followed by a live performance in which Enemy (Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren) marks a decade of music making by playing some of their key tunes. Also included an unearthed gem featuring a 2009 session by Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich, and albums that mark new directions in the work of Matt Ulery, Ches Smith and Dan Weiss, respectively. The playlist features Charles Kynard; Enemy, Kit Downes, Petter Eldh, James Maddren; Matt Ulery; Russ Johnson, Christian Weber, Dieter Ulrich; Ches Smith [pictured]; Dan Weiss. Today, the Spotlight was meant to shine On drummer, percussionist, and composer Ches Smith, whose album Laugh Ash was released earlier this year on Pyroclastic Records. As we arranged to get together, Ches suggested we include Shara Lunon, the transdisciplinary poet, vocalist, composer, and improviser featured on the album.Laugh Ash is one of the most intriguing records I have encountered in quite some time, with its mix of form and improvisation, acoustic and synthetic, quiet and explosiveness. In addition to Ches and Shara, the album includes an all-star cast from today's creative music scene: flutist Anna Webber, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trumpeter Nate Wooley, violinist Jennifer Choi, violist Kyle Armbrust, cellist Michael Nicolas, and bassist/keyboardist Shahzad Ismaily. It is an exciting work and we had a great conversation. In “Lies and Distortion,” the opening essay of his book Unstrung: Rants And Stories Of a Noise Guitarist, Marc Ribot writes: “We seem to love broken voices in general: vocal cords eroded by whiskey and screaming, the junked-out weakness of certain horn players, distortion which signifies surpassing the capabilities of a tube or a speaker—voices that damage, but (at least in performance) don't actually die…Was this always true? I don't know.” In a way, that speaks to Ribot's own playing, on his own and with many luminary collaborators. Though he can certainly play delicately, a frayed, beyond-the-limit quality informs Ribot's sensibility. Since 2008, he's released records with Ceramic Dog—a band featuring Ribott on vocals and guitar, previous Transmissions guest Shazhad Ismaily on bass and vocals, and Ches Smith on drums and vocals. On July 14th, the band releases another scalded and electrifying record with Connection. Ribot is our guest this week on the show, and we're pleased to present this rollicking, and at times charmingly contentious talk this on Transmissions. From his complicated relationship with his former Lounge Lizards collaborator John Lurie, to his views on how labor and capitalism inform his relationship with music, his history as a collaborator, Hal Willner's Night Music, his recent embrace of the Gibson SG, and much more, this is a charged chat with a jazz-punk creative icon. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast network, check out Talkhouse for more great reading and listening. Next week on the show, Gia Margaret on her Romantic Piano.

Some people accuse critics of being subjective, but when discussing music there's always one Platonic fact you can point to above and beyond the shifting tides of fashion and trend: does Mikey like it? In this case, yes, yes he does. He likes all four of this episode's albums. Pat, on the other hand? Still a bit bastardly. We kick the episode off with some reader comments and end it talking about 80s music and Joni Mitchell, so something for everyone. Michael Blake – COMBOBULATE; Jamie Branch – PINK DOLPHINS; Ches Smith – INTERPRET IT WELL; Ben Markley - ARI'S FUN HOUSE.
