This talk will consider how and why the frontispiece to this edition was different from those in earlier editions and place the image in relation to other images of ballroom dance bands before and after 1728. The music publisher John Playford built his success on the publication in 1651 of the first book to give tunes and dance instructions for country dances. He named it The English Dancing Master and in subsequent editions The Dancing Master. The frontispiece to the eighteenth and final edition of vol. 1 (c.1728) shows a trio of musicians – violin, oboe, bassoon – accompanying a group of country dancers in a ballroom. This talk will consider how and why the frontispiece to this edition was different from those in earlier editions and place the image in relation to other images of ballroom dance bands before and after 1728. The speakers will also examine Hogarth's print A Country Dance and what it tells us about decorum and licence in mid-18th century ballroom dancing. Jeremy Barlow specialises in English popular and dance music from 1550 to 1750, and also has a particular interest in the illustration of music and social dance over the centuries. He has lectured on a variety of subjects for organisations such as the The Arts Society, U3A, the Art Fund and National Trust. His books include The Enraged Musician: Hogarth's Musical Imagery (Ashgate) and The Cat & the Fiddle: Images of Musical Humour from the Middle Ages to Modern Times (Bodleian Library). The Bodleian Library has also published A Dance Through Time: Images of Western Social Dancing from the Middle Ages to Modern Times. Jeremy is well known for his work on Playford and has published an edition of Playford's dance tunes, The Complete Country Dance Tunes from Playford's Dancing Master (1651–ca.1728) (Faber Music). Alice Little is a Research Fellow at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, part of the Music Faculty of the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on collectors and collecting, particularly eighteenth-century tunebooks and their compilers, looking at what sources the collections were gathered from and what the selection of music says about the people and cultures that collected and used them.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Peter Cunnah and Al Mackenzie of British Pop/Rock and Dance Band, D:ReamD:Ream is an Irish/English pop rock and dance group. They had a UK No. 1 hit with "Things Can Only Get Better" in 1994 as well as eight more top 40 hits.[1] They released three albums, two of which reached the UK top five.[1] The group had an all-male line-up which varied in number, but mainly centred on lead singer Peter Cunnah. Middle Name Dance Band: Live at Yonder Festival, Mary Valley, 30 November 2019 Middle Name Dance Band are a trio of established Brisbane musicians spanning many genres but brought together by a love of jamming and making people move their butts. The players are Sam Pogglioli, better known as producer and DJ Sampology, Megan Christensen, a.k.a. KUZKO, also from the band Pink Matter, and Sam Maguire, a.k.a. producer and DJ Sam Stosuur, who has also played bass for Astro Travelers and Tiana Khasi. The three started jamming together in early 2018 and at first only intended to release one EP together, but the positive response to their live shows and recordings led to them staying together. Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol 1 was released in 2018, followed by Vol 2 in 2020. The Gene Kardos Orchestra was a busy and frequently recorded band in the early 1930's - based at the Gloria Palast in the Bronx, they were one of the few white groups playing really hot dance music during the Depression years. While they recorded under Kardos' name (and a variety of pseudonyms) for Victor, Melotone and the ARC labels, it was featured under the name of their pianist, Joel Shaw for recordings made for the Crown label. En HDO 495 escuchamos cuatro grabaciones publicadas en Hot Cup Records, el sello de Moppa Elliott, contrabajista, educador y líder de los imprescindibles Mostly Other People Do The Killing. Suena en primer lugar Harder On The Outside, lo nuevo del guitarrista Jon Lundbom, grabación en la que Elliott participa como contrabajista. Tras esta potente propuesta, suenan dos temas de cada uno de los discos que integran Jazz Band /Rock Band / Dance Band, que se publica en formato de doble CD y triple LP. Las tres grabaciones son muy interesantes y diversas entre sí, y muestran el trabajo de Moppa Elliott como compositor. Advancing On a Wild Pitch está interpretado por la Jazz Band y, como su nombre indica, es la propuesta jazzísticamente más ortodoxa, en la que se incluye algún tema que forma parte del repertorio de los MOPDTK, interpretado sin el carácter iconoclasta de este supergrupo. Acceleration Due To Gravity explora con la Dance Band distintas aproximaciones a la música de baile moderna, incluyendo estilos como el hip-hop o el r’n’b. Finalmente Unspeakable Garbage es una aproximación a la música rock de los años 80, en la que participa the hardest blowing man in the scene, Mister Dr. Rocks. Batuk are producer Ntatho Mokgata (Spoek Mathambo) and singer Carla Fonseca (Manteiga). We met on the eve of the release of the first single,  Deep Ocean Deep, from the duo's second album Kasi Royalty. The sound is a combination of South African house beats, and rhythms and sounds from across the continent. Batuk recently returned from a tour that took them to Australia, South Korea and China. We chatted about, among other things, creativity and performance, the global legacy of whiteness, and the ups and downs of life on the road. I am pleased to include two groovy tracks from Kasi Royalty- the new single Deep Ocean Deep, and Niks Mapha!

  Ernie Smith (born Glenroy Anthony Michael Archangelo Smith, May 1945, Kingston, Jamaica) is a reggae singer, with a deep baritone voice, who had his greatest success in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fab 5, formed in 1970, is Jamaica's pre eminent popular band, whether measured by record sales at home, hits on the charts, frequency of engagements or major awards won over the years.Their first recording, "Come Back And Stay", was number one in Jamaica, and in their first year on the road, and for the following two years, they won the only available awards, the Swing Awards for best band of 1971-72, 1972-73 and 1973-74. They also took the El Suzie Award as Joint Top Road and Dance Band for 1975-76 and the RJR Listeners' Award for Best Band in 1980.They backed Johnny Nash on all the reggae cuts comprising most of his platinum album "I Can See Clearly Now". Two singles from that album, "Guava Jelly" and "Stir It Up", established Bob Marley as a major songwriter on the international scene.Fab 5 have enjoyed an endless succession of hits in Jamaica and the "ethnic" markets of North America.In their early years such songs as "Chirpy Cheep", "Shaving Cream", "Oh, Dad" and "Love Me For A Reason", and their musicality and showmanship made Fab 5 the rage on the dance and show circuits.More recently, they have been kept on top by the likes of "Yu Safe", "Ring Road Jam", "Feeling Horny", "Computer Mad", "What The Police High Command Can Do", "Jamaican Woman", "Psalms", "All Night Party", "Mini", "Sweat", "Don't Wear None", "Freeze", "Good Buddy", "Mango" and their "Live" series.

She has worked with a Children's Show Group, 25 piece Dance Band, five piece Progressive Rock Group, Comedy Duo and as a solo Entertainer with her backing band. During her working experience Sue has found herself in Theatre Plays, Films, Pantomime, Summer Seasons, Concerts, Cabaret, Hotels, Night Clubs and Saloon Work in Hotel Lounge bars in venues such as the Hilton, Ramada, Sheraton, Holiday Inn, and many more. Over the years, she has won many accolades with her talents including a British Clubland Award two years running. Through bad health, Sue faced a crossroads in her life, which forced her to leave her beloved Show-Business career for a while.
