"Talking At The Diner" Podcast Ep. 41 ft. Brendan Johnson of Stella Ruze

I met up with Brendan Johnson - guitarist and primary songwriter of Stella Ruze, a band that he started in 2014 with vocalist / mandolin player Katie O' Donnell, keyboardist Mason Hunter, and trumpet player Alex Styer. In the ten years the band has been together, their sound has evolved past early comparisons to The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons to a more complex marriage of modern folk melodicism and jam band experimentation, dropping beautifully melodic gems with four-part vocal harmonies that can morph into psychedelic instrumental odysseys at any moment.Celebrating their tenth year as a band, Stella Ruze has spent much of 2024 navigating all the pivots and adjustments that come with sticking around for a decade. Personnel changes and realignments are part of the deal, but through all that they completed their third studio album - “Origin” - and are doing what they need to do to “keep the train on the tracks.” Do yourself a favor and GO see this band at their album release party for “Origin” at Ardmore Music Hall on 12/21/24. Appearing with them will be fellow Philly folk mainstays Hezekiah Jones and Brittany Ann Tranbaugh.I hope you enjoy my conversation with Brendan. He's a thoughtful, kind, and curious person. And a pretty damn talented one at that!~ JKF ❤️

The last time Brendan Johnson of Stella Ruze was on the show, it was with his bandmate Katie O'Donnell, and it was less than a week before the world shutdown in March of 2020 (Dan didn't have another in-person guest for nearly a year and a half). It's been almost five years, but Brendan comes back to talk to Dan about the band, some line-up and life changes amidst them, and how embracing improvisation and extended instrumental sections gave them their latest LP, 'Origin'. Brendan and Dan get into their love of live improvisation, namely the band Phish, and the difference between proper "jamming" and just extended soloing. 'Origin' is available December 20th wherever you get your digital music, and on vinyl through the band's website. Stella Ruze will play an LP release show at Ardmore Music Hall on December 21st with Hezekiah Jones and Brittany Ann Tranbaugh.

Dan has admired Chiara D'Anzieri's music (under the Santa Chiara moniker) for a while now, and has wanted to have her on the show ever since. Chiara talks about coming to the US in her 20s after meeting Philly musician Ron Gallo on a beach in Italy while he was on tour, and how the adjustment to life over here was an up-and-down journey. Trained as classical cellist, Chiara spent most of her young life traveling to play with orchestras and ensembles, and made the decision to pursue rock and pop music as she got older. We talk travel, touring in the US, and her latest album, 'IMPORTED', which is available on Kill Rock Stars and everywhere you get your digital music. Santa Chiara is playing at Ardmore Music Hall on 10/21 as part of the first night of Philly Music Fest with Hurry and Slaughter Beach, Dog. This episode features an exclusive, unreleased song from Chiara that was recorded live at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia earlier this year.  'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol. 1' is out now exclusively on Bandcamp, and is a compilation of 10 unique performances from the podcast over the last ten years. All the proceeds from the compilation go to support Philly Music Fest's charitable giving. Every year, PMF donates all the profits from the festival to music non-profits all over Philadelphia. Since their inception, they've donated over $500K to music and education charities throughout the region.

Maggie Mae – Funky Soulful Folk

The Journey of My Mother's Son

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance.  She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes.  At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. iTunes         Spotify         Youtube           Patreon Erich Miller is the FOH Engineer for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, currently based out of South Philly. He’s a graduate of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a degree in Jazz Trumpet performance and a minor in Music Technology. Erich was first introduced to music at the age of five when his parents bought an upright piano and started taking him to piano lessons. A few years later, he discovered the trumpet, and a path was set that led him to pursue music in college. After deciding that playing the trumpet professionally would not in fact be his destiny, Erich began his transition into being a freelance audio engineer. While working full time at a local production company as an audio engineer, he started working at a handful of other small local clubs until finally settling at The Ardmore Music Hall. It was there that he first met Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, and after running sound for a few of their shows at Ardmore, the band asked if he was interested in coming on the road. He took the gig, and three years later, he and the band are bringing their infectious brand of Funk to audience’s world wide. Episode 002 of The Upful LIFE Podcast, featuring a long-form interview with Chris Perella, of Philadelphia-area jam hub Ardmore Music Hall (AMH). Before assuming the reigns (and ultimately heading up a team to buy) at Ardmore Music Hall, Chris was manager and talent buyer at storied, infamous Philly club The Blockley, which operated (as CP details, by the seat of it's pants and skin of it's teeth) for about five years. I had the pleasure and privilege of working for Mr. Perella at The Blockley for a year and a half or so, during this time period Chris both befriended me and peeled back the curtain of the Philly music scenes/industry. Beginning in June 2012 through August 2013, Chris Perella hired and employed me through some very dark personal times; I was not back in Philadelphia by choice, I moved back from Florida because my father had become very ill, and my mother was overwhelmed caring for him. It was during this time that I came to know CP both professionally, and personally' and since then he's been among the finest humans I've been lucky to call a friend in this life. As such, I was anxious to get him onto The Upful LIFE Podcast to discuss his career arc, as well as any number of music culture topics. Chris Perella interview starts at 10:30 mark CP and BG take a trip down memory lane, discussing the five years that AMH has been doing the damn thing. Chris really opens up about his former club, the infamous/legendary Philly nightspot #TheBlockley, where I had the pleasure of working for him in 2012-2013. Perella wrestles with what made The Blockley both the dream venue, and his personal nightmare, and we laugh at a few classic nights of yore (including the sold out LETTUCE show in May 2013!). Perella offers insights as to why The Blockley ultimately failed, and how he mined the lessons from that experience to find great success at AMH. Chris also details his own path from green AF rookie band manager almost overnight to big-market talent buyer, running the hottest room in town with virtually NO experience. He talks about what he's looking for when booking a new band, and why. We reflect on some gambles he's taken on young bands years ago. Also sheds light on how he became co-manager of Everyone Orchestra. We get his thoughts on the legacies of Grateful Dead, New Orleans music, The Disco Biscuits and how these entities have affected and influenced Philadelphia's vibrant music scene, of which he is a major cog. We conclude with an honest and raw exchange about loyalty in this industry. A fantastic (HOUR LONG!) powwow with CP! Episode 002 ends with the debut segment *VIBE Junkie JAM of the Week* (1:15:25), where I will be placing a spotlight on a excessively dope piece of music every episode. Sometimes I'll play just a song, other times I'll discuss it at length. This week's segment focuses on Lettuce recently busting out D'Angelo‘s “Brown Sugar” (9/20 Berkeley CA), which was a very special moment for the host, and many others. You'll have to listen in to find out why! ~bg~ The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Theme Song: Mazel Tov by CALVIN VALENTINE
