Music from the Early 21st Century è cointestato a Bobby Previte, batteria, Saft, organo Hammond, Fender Rhodes e MiniMoog, e Nels Cline, chitarra.
Stevie Wonder has often infused his performances with compelling renditions of jazz standards like Miles' "All Blues" or Coltrane's "Giant Steps". In return, countless jazz musicians have looked at his Songbook and found in his compositions fertile grounds for their own explorations. In the second part of our "Stevie @70 special" we cherry-picked tributes to his genius by the likes of Ran Blake, Cassandra Wilson, Gene Harris, Jamie Saft and many more, and a great guest appearance by Stevie Wonder on Herbie Hancock's 70s funk jazz voyage "Man-Child". Happy listening! The playlist features Gene Harris, Hank Crawford, Herbie Hancock, Dave Pietro, Cassandra Wilson, Ran Blake, Rune Gustaffson, Lou Rawls, Jamie Saft, Gato Barbieri, Laika and Joe Farrell. For Coronacast #8, the wise and hilarious Jamie Saft returns to talk performing with the masters, making records, solo performance, playing on antique instruments and much much more. Strap in, this is a good one.

Keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist, Jamie Saft is exactly the type of musician we love to talk about here on the Major Scale. He's prolific, and leaves no musical territory unexplored–from rock to punk, and the experimental to all that Jazz. His work with Bernard Purdie, John Zorn, Bad Brains, the Beastie Boys, and Bill Laswell, to name a few, have put Saft into the Musician's Musician club–a very good place to be. His latest efforts have found him in good company with fellow heavyweights Steve Swallow and Bobby Previte, not to mention the incomparable punk icon Iggy Pop on the mic, all of which you'll hear. Ron Carter you've heard countless times and if you haven't we don't know where you've been. He's a legend–his bass playing provides the pulse and groove of countless classics and infinite samples for hip hop and electronica. He's been name checked and enlisted by everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to Gil Scott-Heron and Miles Davis. He's a leader and an artist with over 2000 sessions under his belt and he continues to this day. He joined us to talk abut one of his recent recordings, The Brown Beatnik Tomes with Def Poetry's Danny Simmons. Curious eardrums will be delighted. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar.

Our guest today, guitarist Nick Millevoi. To quote his bio, “Nick Millevoi is a guitarist and composer whose music searches for the sonic cracks between jazz, rock and roll, noise, and modern composition.” Nick has performed with Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, the duo Archer Spade with trombonist Dan Blacksberg as well as making five full-length albums with the trio Many Arms. Since 2016, Nick's main vehicle is The Desertion Trio, featuring Johnny deBlase on bass and Kevin Shea on drums. Their first two records also featured Jamie Saft on organ and their third, the just-released TWILIGHT TIME on the Long Song label features guest stars Ron Stabinsky on organ and Sun Ra Arkestra vocalist Tara Middleton. It's a collection of radically reworked tunes from the oldies era and has already won notice from Rolling Stone magazine, who listed the new record's title cut as a “Song You Need to Know” in their May issue. Nick has drawn a lot of press over the years, he also writes for a number of guitar magazines, but I never really read his origin story On today's interview we talk about Millevoi's earliest music loves, playing his 8th grade graduation party, confronting the jazz curriculum in college, deflecting law school, touring with Many Arms, the music of Neil Young, Nirvana and Dick Dale, the inspirational Wildwood New Jersey, making the new record and future records he is destined to make.

Escuchamos música de sus últimas grabaciones: "Recording ban" y "More of that".

Disco junto a Marcos Collado (guitarra), Ander García (contrabajo) y Miguel Benito (batería). Episode 4 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features the final interview with trombonist Roswell Rudd before his death in December 2017. Rudd was one of the pioneering figures of the jazz avant-garde; though he started out in a Dixieland band, by 1960, he was working with Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, and Steve Lacy. He was a member of the ensemble that recorded the legendary ESP-Disk’ album New York Eye & Ear Control, alongside Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, John Tchicai, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray; along with Tchicai, drummer Milford Graves, and several different bassists, he formed the New York Art Quartet, whose debut album, also on ESP-Disk’, is a landmark of the free jazz era. He and Lacy collaborated for years, interpreting Thelonious Monk's music without a pianist; he was also on multiple Shepp albums in the ’60s, and appeared on the Jazz Composers Orchestra album Communications. In the 2000s, Rudd explored music beyond jazz, recording albums with Mongolian musicians and with Puerto Rican guitarist and cuatro player Yomo Toro. His latest releases include Strength and Power, a collaboration with keyboardist Jamie Saft , bassist Trevor Dunn , and drummer Balazs Pandi, and Embrace, with singer Fay Victor, pianist Lafayette Harris, and bassist Ken Filiano. Rudd was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and battled the disease until his death in December 2017, but maintained as busy a recording and performing schedule as he could until the end. It’s easy to tell, in this conversation, that he was in poor health; he spoke softly and slowly. But I think it’s still a very interesting interview, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
We are checking cool new CD releases from PIMPY PANDA, MUMPBEAK and JAMIE SAFT, STEVE SWALLOW, BOBBY PREVITE feat. IGGY POP.
