In New York City, being alone needn't be lonely. This hopeful story by Jacqueline C. reminds us that we have the power to set ourselves free. Despite the pandemic, “New York's heart never really stopped beating and it never could”. Enjoy an insightful and optimistic take on NYC from Syd Prescott, a nurse and front-line worker. She gave out free beer when the city shut down during her last bartending shift and rode empty subway cars to and from hospitals and nursing homes. With all the trauma of the last few years under her belt, she maintains that “regular everyday New Yorkers are some of the most compassionate folks you'll ever meet” and we tend to agree! Apartment hunting is a very real sport in New York City. Not only did author and actress Katlyn Carlson find a place to live, she stumbled on a New York miracle, the perfect apartment. A washer dryer, a party ready rooftop, the works. With work calling her to the west coast, will she be able to put this magic abode back on the market? And can we live there? Hang onto your hats (and wigs) friends. Episode three is packed with a psychedelic trip, activism, LOVE, art, an expanding red afro, Grace Jones, the UK, an arrest by the NYPD, and of course, potato leek soup. This uniquely bohemian story from Robin LaVerne Wilson (aka Dragonfly aka Miss Justice Jester) is not to be missed. However, this story contains adult language, sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll--and is not recommended for kids! This is the third episode in our holiday partnership with Subwaygram and Daylight Books. Day 1 of any New York City move can be daunting. For writer, Tama Filianga, it was a doozy, involving a robbery, wrongful incarceration, life on the streets, and love between subway cars. Narrated by Alex May, this absolutely true story is guaranteed to shock. Not ideal for kids' ears.
Episode Summary:Meanwhile patiently observing and exploring every single bit of the fascinating Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries exhibition at the 23rd International Exposition at Triennale Milano, curated by Ersilia Vaudo, we were mesmerised by an underwater robotic installation. In this episode we meet British bio artist Anna Dumitriu, who tells us more about the artwork ArcheaBot, reimagining what a post climate change life might be - a post singularity life-form. Based on a ground breaking research on archaea - a group of unicellular microorganisms believed to be the oldest form of life on earth - combined with the latest innovations in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Anna has collaborated with Alex May to create the ‘ultimate' species that can adapt to live in extreme conditions, able to survive the end of our world. The pioneering visual artist speaks about her extraordinary practice in between art and biology and the role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in an altered future life, laying the importance Alan Turing's Imitation Game has assumed in the philosophy of mind and quoting ideas of Elon Musk discussing possible solutions for Climate Change. The Speaker:Anna Dumitriu is an award winning, internationally renowned, British artist who works with BioArt, sculpture, installation, and digital media to explore our relationship to infectious diseases, synthetic biology and robotics. In this episode Gary Mansfield talks to Sign painter Alex May Hughes (@alexmayhughes). Alex Discovered Sign Painting after wanting to revisit a project she had undertaken on her graphic design degree involving typography, by chance her local art shop was running a sign painting workshop and the rest is history. Alex worked from home and would post her finished pieces online, while still working in retail to pay the bills. Being a life-long fan of the Simpsons, she used them as the subject in one piece, substituting their yellow skin for gold leaf. It sold immediately when posted online and they have been a huge part of her career ever since. Her smaller, more intimate pieces are now in such demand, she rarely works outside of her studio, only to occasionally assist fellow sign painters on larger jobs. I had the pleasure of speaking to Alex May from Connected Investors. Alex works at Connected Investors which offers a networking platform for investors and lenders in the real estate space. Alex works in business development at Connected Investors. Alex provides valuable information about the basics of what hard money is and the advantages of using hard money. Also she goes into depth on how to be able to build relationships. If you are feeling tapped out with a traditional lender and have maxed out the number of traditional loans that you can have you might want to check this episode out. Hard Money could fill in the space in your real estate portfolio where traditional lending leaves off. It’s an additional tool in your tool box for real estate investing. Also Alex provides valuable information on networking and how to distinguish yourself from other individuals when trying to establish a relationship. One of the key takeaways that she mentioned were that when networking you are building a relationship and a friendship. When cold calling or cold emailing someone reach out to them and comment on something that you genuinely enjoyed about the individual or company. Doing this will allow you to differentiate yourself from the other hundreds or thousands of people contacting this company or individual. If you want to find out more about Alex May you can go to Connected Investors.

It seems like it was only last week that Perestroika happened (or was it Glasnost, we find it so hard to tell with these modern haircuts) and One Life Left was made free of the cruel oppressor that took over our airwaves for three minutes every week. Oh, who are we kidding, we still miss you and your constantly self-promoting ways Derek. But Comrade Daria is hopefully a worthy replacement with her Command Market Economy. Our super-special guest Alex May, tries to hide some exclusives from us and - for the most part - he succeeds, but we manage to get some colours announced for our fans of colours in games. He also has a smooth voice that made at least one person in the OLL chat room go weak at the knees. But that might have been when they saw how much a hotel room in Nottingham costs. Apologies for the delay in uploading this, there were issues with our caretaker's broadband. We also have the usual apology for anyone offended by Craig's poem, but you should be used to that by now.Cheerio! Team OLL x
