One of the “cool” movies of the 1990s, Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece* is a carnival of violence and humour set to a banging soundtrack. It made stars of Samuel L Jackson and Uma Thurman, revitalised the careers of John Travolta and Bruce Willis, and basically gave Tarantino a blank cheque going forward. But did it tickle the pickle of Mick, Hannah and Jen? Or is it all Dick Dale and no trousers?  *Discuss. That's why we're here, right? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

From a musical standpoint, the movie helped revive interest in Dick Dale's music (he did the song Misirlou: the song with the crazy surf guitar & the screaming in the beginning of it). It also sparked interest in the early Kool & the Gang funk classic Jungle Boogie & Link Wray's classic Rumble. * In 2000, Pearl Jam broke a record on Billboard's albums chart when 5 of their released live albums from their European tour hit the chart in the same week. * In 2006, Rascal Flatts' opening act Eric Church was kicked off the tour after he repeatedly played over his allotted opening slot time. Apparently, that was the last straw with Rascal Flatts. Eric's replacement was a hotshot country newcomer at the time: Taylor Swift. * In 2006, singer Melina Leon married her husband Ruy Fernando Delgado. * In 2014, singer Kesha started her lawsuit against producer Dr. Luke in order to be released from her contract with him. * In 2017, country singer Kacey Musgraves married singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly. * In 2018, Steppenwolf performed in Baxter Springs, Kansas, which was their final show. * In 2023, Madonna started her Celebration tour, after having to delay it to deal with a bacterial infection which sent her to the hospital. In the world of classical music: * In 1924, the opera Die Gluckliche Hand premiered. * In 1956, the overture Robert Browning by Charles Ives premiered. In the world of theater: * In 1930, the Gershwin musical Girl Crazy premiered on Broadway & made stars out of Ginger Rogers & especially Ethel Merman. * In 1961, the Frank Loesser musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying premiered on Broadway. In award ceremonies that were held on this date: * In 1970, Merle Haggard won at the Country Music Association awards. * In 1974, Charlie Rich won at the Country Music Association awards. * In 1985, Ricky Skaggs won at the Country Music Association awards. In 2009, opera superstar Placido Domingo received the first Birgit Nilsson million dollar prize. In 2020, Post Malone & Billie Eilish were the big winners at the Billboard Music Awards. This outing of Dipped In Tone kicks off with an exciting update from Zach Broyles' camp: He's opening a brick-and-mortar guitar shop in Nashville, called High Voltage Guitars. Opening on October 8, the store will carry gear from Two-Rock, Divided By 13, Dr. Z, Castedosa, Fano, Novo, and of course Mythos Pedals. Zach hints that there might be some handwired JHS pedals from Josh Scott himself, too, and Rhett reveals that he plans to consign some of his guitars at the shop. The business side of Zach's new venture brings them to a key piece of today's episode: Rhett and Zach aren't running charities. They do what they do to make money; guitars, gear, podcasting, and content creation are their literal jobs. And they're not as glamorous and breezy as most armchair commentators might guess.Want to do what Rhett and Zach do? Welcome to the club. The guitar-influencer field is what one might call “oversaturated” at the moment, and it's difficult to break out—but not impossible. As our hosts explain, it requires putting in 60-hour work weeks, a diverse skillset, a knack for catching people's attention, and a certain level of genuineness. Rhett knows this path well, and he has hard-earned advice for staying true to oneself while building a following in the gear world.Tune in to learn why Rhett thinks Fretboard Summit, a three-day guitar festival organized by Fretboard Journal, blows NAMM out of the water and builds legitimate connections between guitarists, and catch the duo dipping a Dick Dale-inspired, all-Fender rig.Get 10% off your order at http://stewmac.com/dippedintoneSubscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/

Dominic a young artist who is just beginning his professional musical journey.  Based in California, Dominic is excited about the release of his debut album, Happy Little Accidents, which was released June 28 on Quarto Valley Records.Happy Little Accidents is fresh music but with hints of nostalgia from the many artists that influenced him since he was a kid, such as the Beatles, Aerosmith, Rick Nelson, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams III. This album is laced with touches of humor, great melodies and catchy lyrics while paired with a completely unique vocal style which all help make this an extremely well-balanced collection of get-off-your-chair-and-dance tunes. The album features a cast of stellar musicians assisting Dominic in his maiden musical adventure including premier players like guitarist Doug Pettibone (whose impressive list of credits include Sting, Keith Richards, Mark Knopfler, Joan Baez, Jewel, Tracy Chapman, John Mayer, and many others),  iconic drummer Kenny Aronoff (whose off-the-hook credits include John Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and a ton more) , bassist Jorgen Carlsson (ex-Gov't Mule) and bassist Brent Harding from Social Distortion.  Every song on the album showcases the amazing musicianship of these incredible artists with Dom doing all the lead vocals. The album was produced by Dave Jenkins (producer and co-writer who studied under Brian Wilson – he produced Dolly Parton's version of Heart's classic “Magic Man” with former Heart guitarist Howard Leese). The album was recorded the “old fashion way” with stand-up bass and vintage condenser microphones. The music is both a rockin' album of classic rockabilly and classic country influences along with a few ballads that slow down the frenetic pace a bit.  One can hear the influence in Dominic's music that pays a debt to artists like Johnny Cash,Merle Haggard, Bo Diddley, Elvis and the Beach Boys, along with a lot of rockabilly in general.Dominic wrote “Song for Nick” about his brother's passing. Songs “La Verne” & “Ely May,” “Hard to Say Goodbye,” “Just Take it All,” “Poor Me Another,” “Wanna Good Time,” “Rosie” are based on Dom's real-life experiences. While Happy Little Accidents is Dominic's debut album, he has written and previously released two singles “What a World We Live In” and “Out of Control” which were played on US and UK radio.   He's also done a little acting on the side, having a bit part in the film, Happy Birthday, which starred Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. https://www.daqofficial.com

[originally published on Patreon Aug 24, 2021] I said I wasn't gonna do an episode this week, but I can't help myself. and out of 8 Q&A questions, I made it through precisely one, lol. looks like Q&A will definitely be on a rolling basis. today we talk about the coin shortage and the elimination of cash. right off the bat, we talk about the World Economic Forum and the Great Reset, then the function cash plays in the underground economy. from there, we go into the Free Silver movement and its war against the nefarious gold standard, including William Jennings Bryan. From the Free Silver movement, we go into L. Frank Baum and his Wizard of Oz as metaphor for the Silver vs. Gold debates of the time, and then we explore the theosophical underpinnings of Oz. from there, things really come off the rails, and we discuss some of the more esoteric Oz movies, including the demented Return to Oz, and then wrap it up with a discussion of Dr. William Joseph Bryan, the hypnotist. songs:  - outtakes from Jimmy Page's Lucifer Rising soundtrack looped - the King of the Surf Guitar by Dick Dale

S2E8 - The Lost Barbie Episode w/ Muscle Beach Party (1964) & Back to the Beach (1987) In our #Noivember Rain episode, we promised that you'd have a Barbie under your tree for Christmas and here she is! Now that the SAG AFTRA strike is finally over, we can finally post THE LOST BARBIE EPISODE without getting Philena in trouble as Warner Bros' BARBIE was definitely a struck work back when. We did not trim this episode down so you can hear how much the OMFYS crew underestimated the power of pink in our mostly laughable predictions of BARBIE's box office. We also talk about Mattel's history of industrial espionage and the potential for a prestige BRATZ movie. For this episode's movies, we go back to the wildly successful beach party movies of the 60s that inspired Barbie's movie to Malibu with MUSCLE BEACH PARTY (1964). In this second beach movie from American International Pictures, Frankie Avalon and Anette Funicello find their precious strip of sand is overrun by oiled-up body builders who are harshing their vibes! Can they deal??? Bringing the jokes that mostly don't land are Don Rickles, Morey Amsterdam and Buddy Hackett with musical performances by Dick Dale (a regular in the beach party series) and STEVIE WONDER!!! After that Frankie and Annette go BACK TO THE BEACH in 1987, and those jokes do land this time around in this smart and loving satire of the kooky 60s source material. Like BARBIE, Back to the Beach is directed by a woman, Lyndall Hobbs, but it did not get enough love in the late 80s despite two thumbs way up from Siskel AND Ebert. Also starring Connie Stevens and future felon Lori Laughlin along with cameos by a cavalcade of 50s and 60s sitcom stars including Alan Hale Jr. & Bob Denver (The Skipper & Gilligan), Jerry Mathers (the Beaver), Tony Dow (Wally), Barbara Billingsley (Wally and the Beav's mom), and Don Adams (Get Smart) + a PEE WEE HERMAN (rip) showing up to rock SURFIN' BIRD! If all that wasn't enough, we've got DICK DALE and STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN rockin' WIPE OUT and Cory's pals FISHBONE performing Jamaica Ska and dancing through the sand with Annette. This is just a wonderful 80s relic by way of the 60s that everyone should check out. This was one of our most fun episodes, and we really wish we could've gotten it to you when it was still more timely, but we're all about timeless here at OMFYS. BARBIE is definitely that, so we hope the LOST BARBIE EPISODE is too. Wishing everyone a Happy Holidays, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas with enough CBD in your seasonal strains to help you deal with your most difficult aunts and uncles at the family gatherings. And here's hoping for a stony AF New Year. This week, we explore the ebbs and flows of life with our guest, Ben Roorda, a husband, father, engineer, entrepreneur, and saltwater addict. How being brought up in a conservative evangelical home limited his exposure to music outside the church. How watching 'Under the Sea' from The Little Mermaid ignited his saltwater addiction and the realization that he could leave the life he knew, like Ariel did, 'Brown Eyed Girl' reminds him of his wife, and 'Three Little Birds' by Bob Marley serves as a life preserver during difficult times. We ride the waves of Ben's thrilling entrepreneurial and surfing adventures, with Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson's ‘Boats to Build' and Dick Dale's iconic ‘Misirlou'. Ben's story is a testament to the power of pursuing one's passions. You don't want to miss this one! Pull up a folding chair, grab a drink, find a spot around the fire, and enjoy the conversation and community.  Follow your hosts David, Raza, and Carolina every week as they embark on an epic adventure to find the songs that are stuck to us like audible tattoos to tell the story of who we are and where we've been. Summer Sequel Month 2023 kicks off with a trip back to the beach with The Grindbin Beach Party Crew! The second in the Beach Party movies finds the gang renting a love shack on the sand next to a stable of human-trafficked bodybuilders managed by Don Rickles. Incredibly bad surfing montages, Dick Dale, a very pissed off Anette, and NO ERIC VON ZIPPER make for an entertaining, if slightly infuriating, trip back to the beach.
