In 2010, environmental advocates, elected officials and executives from TransAlta, a Canada-based electricity supplier, assembled a plan to close down Washington’s last remaining coal-burning power plant by the end of 2025. The 15-year long project was a sort of benchmark for transitions of this kind – it included comprehensive financial support and educational opportunities for employees and their families. It eventually lent itself to Washington’s clean energy goals passed in 2019, one of which declared that all state utilities must cease purchasing and using coal-powered energy by the end of 2025. But late last month, when the plant was on track to shut down its operations, the Department of Energy issued an emergency order, ruling that the plant must remain operational for another 90 days. This posed many questions for the future of the plant, due to the long-term effort to close its doors and the lack of customers for coal-powered energy because of the Clean Energy Transformation Act. The plant remains shut down despite the emergency order, but its future hangs in limbo. Joining us to discuss the details is Amanda Zhou, a climate and environment reporter at the Seattle Times.

What happens when a town disappears—but the dead are left behind? This episode begins with a familiar American disaster: Centralia, Pennsylvania, the coal town that has been burning underground since 1962. Most people know the story of the smoke, the buckling roads, and the evacuation. Far fewer know what happened after the living left—when the cemeteries remained, sitting directly above an active underground fire. We explore how burial grounds like the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cemetery slowly began to shift. Headstones tilted. Graves rotated. Steam vented from the soil. Over decades, officials were forced to make an unthinkable series of decisions: which graves to exhume, which to leave behind, and how to negotiate with families when the ground itself could no longer be trusted to stay still. Some remains were relocated. Many were not. And today, the fire still burns beneath them—possibly for centuries to come. It's not a ghost story. There are no apparitions or legends. And somehow, that makes it worse. In the second half of the episode, we turn to a very different kind of quiet revolution: Florence Nightingale, the woman often reduced to a single image—the “Lady with the Lamp.” We dig past the myth to uncover her real legacy as a pioneer of sanitation, hospital reform, and statistical analysis. From filthy Crimean War hospitals to the invention of the coxcomb chart, Nightingale used data, discipline, and relentless attention to detail to save lives—and permanently change modern medicine. Along the way: strange facts about snow, burning earth, shifting assumptions about permanence, and the unsettling realization that even the most basic promises—like the ground holding still—can fail. Because sometimes the oddest stories aren't about what rises from the grave…They're about what refuses to stay buried. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

America’s growth from a rugged frontier nation to the globe’s industrial superpower in the space of 100 years can be explained by one word: coal. Before coal dominance, American buildings were defined by height limits imposed by stonework. The tallest building in the 1830s was Baltimore’s 235-foot tall Phoenix Shot Tower. Transportation also worked poorly without coal. The early wood-fired 4-4-0 locomotives struggled with top freight speeds around 15 mph and pulling trains of approximately 450 tons. The transition to coal and cheap steel enabled the steel-supported 555-foot Washington Monument and allowed massive coal-fired trains to achieve express passenger speeds up to 100+ mph and haul loads over 4,000 tons. For a century the entire world was dependent on coal. It powered railroads, built urban skylines, and provided warmth, light, and power for families rich and poor. Although the American economy soared, society unknowingly suffered from coal’s debilitating health and environmental impacts. Skies were so dirty that on some days, visibility was limited to a few feet. Coal miners frequently died from cave-ins, explosions, or contracting black lung. Towns like Centralia in Illinois were fundamentally destroyed by an underground fire started in 1962 that continues to burn. Today’s guest is Bob Wyss, author of “Black Gold: The Rise, Reign, and Fall of American Coal.” We look at a range of figures that were part of coal’s story, from a largely unknown and unrecognized Pennsylvanian inventor who helped spark the Industrial Revolution to a prominent society clubwoman who clashed with the powerful coal forces in Utah that were fouling the air and sickening residents. It also includes clashes between powerful tycoons, coal miners, and the American public.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The word “love” is one of the sloppiest words in our language, as it primarily refers to a feeling that happens to a person. But in the New Testament, “love,” or “agape,” refers to a way of treating people that was defined by Jesus himself. It means to seek the well-being of others regardless of their response. The Messiah's coming is ultimately an act of love—God with us, God for us- regardless of how we receive Him.Message by Devin Burton, "Love in the Now and Not Yet" as part of our "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" series. Each verse names a title of the promised Messiah, and each refrain calls us to rejoice - not because all is fulfilled yet, but because fulfillment is coming. God's people are called to a unique type of joy. It's more than a happy mood. It's a choice to trust that God will fulfill his promises, and it's a joy that is long-lasting and life-giving. Every verse of the hymn ends with a command to rejoice—even in exile, even in waiting. This is the paradox of Advent joy: we rejoice not because everything is right, but because the One who will make it right is both on His way and here now. Peace is a very common word in English, and it means different things to different people. It's also a very important word in the Bible that refers not only to the absence of conflict but also to the presence of something else. "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" longs for peace - shalom - the restoration of all things. In a world full of darkness, conflict, and sorrow, the prayer is that Christ, the Prince of Peace, would come and break through the gloom. Though we still wait for the full realization of peace, we experience glimpses of it now through Christ's presence, the peace that “passes all understanding.”Message by Matt Klovdahl, "Peace in the Now and Not Yet" as part of our "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" series. The Magic Radio Santa appeared for decades on radio station KELA in the southwest part of the Evergreen State from the late 1940s until the 1970s, reading Christmas letters and wish lists of presents from local children. The first part of this episode is from December 2018, when Banel produced a story for a Seattle radio station about a piece of vintage sound from 1950 – a giant, 16-inch diameter recording of a broadcast by Centralia's “Magic Radio Santa.” The second part is from December 2022, when Banel presented an update to a search - described in part one - for the kids mentioned in the 1950 recording. The other voice alongside Feliks from the 2018 and 2022 audio is Dave Ross. The original 1950 recording came from John Jenkins at SPARK Museum in Bellingham, Washington. CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via www.space101fm.org. The radio station broadcasts from studios at historic Magnuson Park – located in the former Master-at-Arms' quarters in the old Sand Point Naval Air Station - on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. Subscribe to the CASCADE OF HISTORY podcast via most podcast platforms and never miss regular weekly episodes of Sunday night broadcasts as well as frequent bonus episodes.

In a day where churches seem to crumble with little to no accountability or come under scrutiny for only having external authority structures, it's important to reflect the wisdom of the early church and appoint elders in every city. In this session, we will look at the biblical framework for local church eldership. And after that, we'll share and discover some practical wisdom that will help any team really flourish within that model of leadership.Derrill Corbin is the Senior Pastor of Mannahouse, a multi-site church in Portland, Oregon. He is also the founder of Life Center,  a local church in Centralia, WA. Known for his creative leadership and insightful communication, Derrill is dedicated to doing life at the table, making disciples, and advancing Jesus' movement. He holds a master's degree in Sacred Studies from Christian Life School of Theology, a Bachelor of Theology from Portland Bible College, where he now serves as chancellor, and is pursuing his doctoral degree at Indiana Wesleyan University. He is the author of Made to Move, a book about boldly pursuing Jesus' call in your life. Derrill resides in Camas, Washington, with his wife, Michal, and their three young adult children. We hope that this teaching left you more encouraged and equipped today. In this chilling episode of the 222 Paranormal Podcast, we take you on a spine-tingling tour of one of America's most haunted states—Pennsylvania. With its rich history, colonial roots, and centuries of folklore, it's no wonder that the Keystone State is teeming with tales of the supernatural. Buckle up as we explore three of the most notorious paranormal hotspots: Eastern State Penitentiary, the abandoned town of Centralia, and the eerie Curse of Centralia First, we dive into the cold, crumbling walls of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, this Gothic-style fortress was built in 1829 and became a model for prison reform. However, its innovative solitary confinement system led to decades of extreme isolation, mental deterioration, and documented reports of abuse. Today, Eastern State is a hotspot for ghost hunters and thrill seekers. Visitors and investigators frequently report shadowy figures, disembodied voices, cell doors slamming shut on their own, and even chilling apparitions. Could the tortured souls of former inmates still walk its haunted halls? Next, we head north to the ghost town of Centralia—a place that quite literally went to hell. Once a bustling coal town, Centralia's fate changed forever in 1962 when an underground mine fire ignited and spread beneath the town, creating a toxic, fiery inferno that still burns today. Smoke billows from cracks in the earth, streets buckle from the heat, and eerie silence blankets the abandoned remains. But beyond the environmental disaster lies a dark legend: the Curse of Centralia. Some believe the fire awakened something ancient—an evil presence long buried beneath the town. Sightings of ghostly figures, phantom voices, and reports of a deep, unsettling dread have given rise to the idea that Centralia isn't just a tragedy—it's cursed. Is it the land itself? A restless energy tied to coal mining or something much older? We discuss theories from Native American lore to modern-day occult connections that suggest Centralia's story is more than just environmental—it might be spiritual. And we'll share real witness accounts from brave souls who've visited Centralia's scorched streets and left forever changed. From prison phantoms to cursed towns swallowed by fire, this episode is packed with the kind of eerie energy that makes your spine tingle. Whether you're a true believer or just love a good ghost story, Haunted Pennsylvania delivers the paranormal goods. So grab your EVP recorder, stay close to the flashlight, and join us as we uncover the ghostly echoes of Pennsylvania's haunted past.
