In this chilling episode of the 222 Paranormal Podcast, we take you on a spine-tingling tour of one of America's most haunted states—Pennsylvania. With its rich history, colonial roots, and centuries of folklore, it's no wonder that the Keystone State is teeming with tales of the supernatural. Buckle up as we explore three of the most notorious paranormal hotspots: Eastern State Penitentiary, the abandoned town of Centralia, and the eerie Curse of Centralia First, we dive into the cold, crumbling walls of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, this Gothic-style fortress was built in 1829 and became a model for prison reform. However, its innovative solitary confinement system led to decades of extreme isolation, mental deterioration, and documented reports of abuse. Today, Eastern State is a hotspot for ghost hunters and thrill seekers. Visitors and investigators frequently report shadowy figures, disembodied voices, cell doors slamming shut on their own, and even chilling apparitions. Could the tortured souls of former inmates still walk its haunted halls? Next, we head north to the ghost town of Centralia—a place that quite literally went to hell. Once a bustling coal town, Centralia's fate changed forever in 1962 when an underground mine fire ignited and spread beneath the town, creating a toxic, fiery inferno that still burns today. Smoke billows from cracks in the earth, streets buckle from the heat, and eerie silence blankets the abandoned remains. But beyond the environmental disaster lies a dark legend: the Curse of Centralia. Some believe the fire awakened something ancient—an evil presence long buried beneath the town. Sightings of ghostly figures, phantom voices, and reports of a deep, unsettling dread have given rise to the idea that Centralia isn't just a tragedy—it's cursed. Is it the land itself? A restless energy tied to coal mining or something much older? We discuss theories from Native American lore to modern-day occult connections that suggest Centralia's story is more than just environmental—it might be spiritual. And we'll share real witness accounts from brave souls who've visited Centralia's scorched streets and left forever changed. From prison phantoms to cursed towns swallowed by fire, this episode is packed with the kind of eerie energy that makes your spine tingle. When the good people of Centralia, PA decided to light an illegal, underground landfill on fire to make it go away, they had no way of knowing that decision would seal the town's fate. How could anyone have predicted that lighting garbage next to a massive coal seam in the earth would cause a fire that couldn't be put out? Episode 53 This is the conclusion of our coverage of the horrific fire that claimed 41 lives at the St. Elizabeth Hospital and Davenport, Iowa in January 1950. The fire, wtill the deadliest fire in state history, was set by a patient at the hospital and this week we cover her confession and the subsequent legal proceedings. We also take a look at the heroes that stepped up to help save lives during the fire, including some very unlikely heroes. Ultimately 40 patients and one nurse lost their lives. Those 40 patients were at St. Elizabeth Hospital for help and their tragic deaths have helped write the fire and building codes for these types of occupancies with the intent to prevent another disaster like this one. These women that died helped us far more than we ever helped them by showing us how we needed to do better to protect heathcare occupancies. Episode 52 Today we are revisiting the deadliest fire in Iowa's history. On January 7, 1950, a fire occurred at a mental health facility called St. Elizabeth Hospital on the Mercy Hospital campus in Davenport, Iowa. When a diagnosed schizophrenic woman, due to be released that day, acted in paranoid desperation, she caused a fire that claimed the lives of 41 people including one staff member. What factors led her to take such drastic measures? More importantly, why was the fire so deadly? We cover entire case including the fire and building code issues that exacerbated the fire and hampered the escape of dozens of patients as we remember the victims of the St. Elizabeth Hospital fire. Today we're going to look at a virtual ghost town of a city that's had a fire burning under it since the 1960s.
This is the finale of our series on the mine fire that destroyed an entire community. From the government missteps to the toxic attitudes that drove division in the town, so many factors compounded and the residents of Centralia paid the price. This week we cover how divided the town's residents became including death threats and a firebombing. We discuss the government's final plan for Centralia, and what remains today where Centralia once stood. Correction: Around the 22 minute mark I indicate that residents within a 16 mile zone were offered relocation. It should have said a 16 acre acre zone, not mile. My apologies for any confusion. This week we discuss how such conspiracies started and what made them easy for some residents to believe. We discuss the evidence in support of and in opposition to those theories so you can make a decision about whether there was any conspiracy between private mining companies and the government related to the Centralia disaster. We've all heard about the canary in the coal mine being an indicator to miners that the air quality in the mine was getting dangerous to breathe. When one Centralia family woke up one morning after suffering unusual and unexplainable ailments in recent weeks to find their pet canary dead in its cage, the people of Centralia could no longer ignore the deadly fire that had been inching closer to their town year after year while they waited for the government to find a way to control it. As the first Centralia families were forced to evacuate their homes, the federal government took over the Centralia mine fire disaster but would their efforts be too little too late? This week we continue our coverage of the mine fire that has burned in rural Pennsylvania for over 60 years. Last week we covered the physics of a mine fire and the most widely accepted theory of how the fire started. This week in addition to covering the other theories of how the fire may have started, we also discuss the initial projects undertaken to control the fire. What went wrong? While it's easy to look in hindsight and see how certain missteps by government officials contributed to the disaster that destroyed an entire town, the question we seek to answer is whether or not any of those missteps constitute negligence. In central Pennsylvania, there's a fire that's been burning for over 60 years and it's still burning. They said it was just a tragic accident. A fire burning in the underground abandoned coal mines in Centralia, Pennsylvania was at first a nuisance, then a concern, then a crisis of epic consequence. However, many investigators over the decades have uncovered evidence that this fire wasn't actually an accident at all. We'll bring you not just the evidence uncovered in support of the different theories presented, but we'll bring you an in-depth understanding of the challenges of a mine fire from the perspective of a fire protection expert. You may know the story of Centralia, PA...but you've never heard it like this. This podcast is a true crime podcast about arson and criminal fires. Listener discretion is recommended. Metcalf and wonder if he is truly worth all the money that is coming his way? They look at the past Super Bowl champions and they all had one thing in common, no team with a receiver that was one of the top paid in the league. Can they spend their money better elsewhere? If they were to trade D.K., what would the market look like? 1:36:14 - “Hey, What the Puck!?” Are we as parents putting too much pressure on our kids in club sports? Are we sure they are having fun?

Doing nothing is so much easier sometimes. In this one, Ian and Liv talk about a fire that broke out in a coal mine beneath the small town of Centralia, Pennsylvania. What's the kicker? The fire started in 1962, and it's still burning today, in 2024. How did the fire start? Why has it been burning for 62 years? What's the proper way of referring to Pennsylvania state in casual conversation? All will be answered in the Season 5 finale! Also, Ian still can't find his carbon monoxide detector. Hoy haremos referencia a 4 increíbles historias. Las momias sokushinbutsu. La corrupción en las Olimpiadas de la Antigua Grecia. Los pies humanos que aparecen en playas de Canadá Y la ciudad que lleva ardiendo décadas… Centralia. Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mpnupyauIN THIS EPISODE: Desolate vistas, noxious gas, people sinking into the ground – no this isn't a description of a scene from a horror film. It's every day life in Centralia, Pennsylvania, a creepy abandoned town that's been on fire since 1962, and was the inspiration for one of the most terrifying video games ever created. (Centralia, Pennsylvania: The Real Life ‘Silent Hill') *** Once upon a time, there was a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He fell in love with a girl whose parents disapproved, and they ran away to be together… Sound familiar? I guarantee you haven't heard this love story, which is, as the newspapers put it, “as unique a romance as ever a pair of young lovers engaged in.” And for once, the newspapers weren't exaggerating. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to bang your head against the nearest wall when you hear the story. (Romance In The Time of Ice Cream Sundaes) *** We've all gone to the bathroom or kitchen sink for a drink of water. Have you ever had a sip of that water and suddenly one day it tastes a bit… off? In most cases it's nothing to worry about, something innocuous has seeped into the water line but is harmless and disappears quickly. But then there are times it's something to worry about – like when you are unwittingly drinking the liquified remains of a corpse.
