Laurens Hammond Rev. Clarence Cobbs & the 1st Church of Deliverance Laurens Hammond filed for a patent on his musical machine. After Laurens got the company up and running, Hammond's Serial Number One went to a dealer in Kansas City, where it was used for years as a traveling demonstrator. The Hammond Organ was an immediate success, and before long, Churches, Theatres and Concert halls were humming to the Model “A”‘s sound. Rev. Clarence "Preacher" Cobbs, Pastor of 1st Church of Deliverance in Chicago, Illinois wanted something different, and procured a Hammond Organ to replace the piano at the request of Kenneth Morris. Rev. Cobbs was also one of the first African-American pastors to have his own radio show. He immediately began to use the Hammond Organ on his broadcasts, and it was a hit! In 1954, Hammond introduced the organ that secured the legend, the Model B-3. Its Chorus-Vibrato and Touch-Response Percussion™ made sounds that were totally new and fresh. Gospel churches embraced the Hammond B-3 like no one else. The Ministers of Music elevated Hammond playing to a level leaving even the most proficient artists shaking their heads in disbelief. •Please send Let's Talk: Gospel Music Gold an email sharing your thoughts about this show segment also if you have any suggestions of future guests you would like to hear on the show. Com Will Jennings, escreveu três canções do Neville Bros. do Álbum Family Groove. Em outubro, Valentine gravou a maravilhosa obra de arte "We Are the People Who Are Darker Than Blue", de Curtis Mayfield que está na playlist. Uma música com assinatura do War de 1972, “The World Is a Ghetto” dá sequencia. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garimpandobolachas/message

First Time I heard Singer songwriter Bill Sprouse and his band Road Home. First time in Calvary Chapel's tent there was ever a Hammond B 3 on stage.
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Rock and Roll Legend, Felix Cavaliere, Founding Member, “The Rascals” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Felix Cavaliere, is a legendary musician and singer-songwriter whose illustrious 5-decade career began as a backup musician for Joey Dee and the Starliters, but very quickly evolved into the creation of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time: The Rascals. His pioneering musicianship on the keys of the Hammond B-3 electric organ, together with his rich, powerful R & B vocals gave the Rascals their signature sound, which was pure magic, in a long string of hits including “Good Lovin”, “I've Been Lonely Too Long”, “Groovin”, “How Can I Be Sure”, “A Girl Like You”, “A Beautiful Morning”, and “People Got to be Free”. Our guest, together with his bandmates Dino Danelli, Eddie Brigati and Gene Cornish – better known as The Rascals - are widely considered to be the very first REAL Rock & Roll band, and they were without question the best “blue eyed soul” group to emerge in the 60's. Their song “Good Lovin”, originally recorded by “The Olympics”, is listed by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the top 500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll. And Rolling Stone included it on their list of the Greatest Songs of All Time. And the song “Groovin” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Since the Rascals broke up in 1972, our guest has had a hugely successful solo career, with 7 albums including his self-titled album “Felix Cavaliere”, “Destiny”, “Treasure”, “Castles in the Air”, “Dreams in Motion”, “Nudge it up a Notch”, which got a Grammy nomination, and “Midnight Flyer”. He continues to perform across the country and around the world for sell-out crowds with his band “Felix Cavaliere's Rascals”. And last year, he released a highly compelling, deeply personal and very moving book entitled, “Memoir of a Rascal”, which is truly one of the most poignant and spiritually uplifting memoirs I've ever read. The list of accolades this man has received is staggering. As a member of the Rascals, he's been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Hit Parade Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. And as an individual, he's also been inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Hammond Organ Hall of Fame. And of equal importance, in 2015 he received the Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award from the World Hunger Association, in recognition of his well-known efforts to make the world better, kinder and more generous. Sax player Marcus Strickland has worked with many notable jazzers, including Roy Haynes, McCoy Tyner, Wynton Marsalis, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Dave Douglas, and Keyon Harrold. He also leads his own band Twi-Life, which inhabits an Afro-futuristic space at the crossroads of Hip Hop, Soul, and Jazz. Twi-Life's album, The Universe's Wildest Dream, conceptualized into being during the lockdown times, urges an awareness of how precious and miraculous and random and delicate our existence is here on Planet Earth, the vast universe, (and everything.) On the album, Marcus Strickland & Charles Haynes stretch out into beat-makers and producers, fleshing out layered studio creations with found sound, guest artists, overdubs and electronics, and ultimately extend the Afro-Futurist tradition to far-out places. Strickland and Twi-Life bring a Hammond B-3 organ with hypnotic Leslie speakers into the studio to play some of the tunes, ahead of the record release, and shows in New York at the Blue Note on Jan. 17 & 18. Set list: “Dust Ball Fantasy” “Bird Call” “You and I, an Anomaly”
We're so stoked to have Nick Millevoi of Grassy Sound as our guest on No Simple Road this week! For guitarist Nick Millevoi, all manner of music can be a source of inspiration, including bachelor-pad “exotica” albums of the 1950s, surf-rock records of the '60s or even old Hollywood cowboy tunes – at least if those influences are put into a modernist compositional and improvisational blender. Millevoi's usual outfit, the Crazy Horse-meets-Coltrane band Desertion Trio, has released four ultra-potent albums since 2016. But he was inspired by his nostalgic sonic fascinations to compose a fun set of tunes to perform with frequent keyboard partner Ron Stabinsky, dubbing their duo project Grassy Sound. The pair's debut album of those songs – The Sounds of Grassy Sound – will be released, digitally and on vinyl, via Destiny Records on April 22, 2022. The disc features such Millevoi-penned highlights as the groovy album-opener “Skylark” and the melody-rich “Lu Fran,” both of which showcase his gritty electric-guitar lyricism and Stabinsky's Hammond B-3 swirl. Then there's “Flitzer,” an essay in bent surf guitar that has a noisy improv section with a Twilight Zone air. The first video from the album is rocking live take on “Flitzer. We talk with Nick about creating noise as music, playing shows creating the most in your face music as possible, life altering music moments, how he had no choice but to be a musician, how he balances his musical career with a day job, and a whole lot more!Check out the new album 'The Sound Of Grassy Sound' on Bandcamp and everywhere music streams! No Simple Road Intro Music Created By ESCAPERFREE SHIPPING from Shop Tour Bus Use The PROMO CODE: nosimpleroadFor 20% off Sunset Lake CBD PROMO CODE: NSR20Make Sure to visit our friends at Fire On The Mountain for some amazing food at one of the 3 locations in the Portland area or one of the 2 locations in the Denver area!Check out the exclusive, limited edition SMARTWOOL / GRATEFUL DEAD collaboration HERE!!! Born: Panama Canal Zone 1956 Hometown: Sierra Vista, AZ Occupation: Career Musician, Organ/keyboards, Entertainer, Composer, Recording Artist, Studio Engineer Experience: 40 years Self Taught Lamont Arthur has been playing, composing and teaching jazz in Tucson for the last three decades. Born in Panama, the son of an army soldier, Lamont found himself growing up at Ft. Huachuca in Southern Arizona. At the age of 12 he became aware of his passion for music. He learned to play the Glockenspiel from his 6th grade music teacher Mrs. Smith. He turned his musical attention to the Hammond B-3 organ and played in mixed-ethnic rock and country groups at places like the Blue Room and Carr Canyon Corral in Sierra Vista. By the late seventies he had moved to Tucson and began playing with groups like Street Pajama, Rapid Transit, Bloolyte, Bondavi and legendary blues-man Sam Taylor to name just a few. He began playing gigs at many of the clubs in Tucson; the Pirates Den, Fun Factory, Bobby McGee's, The Doubletree, Nino's, Gentle Ben's and Merlin's. The scene was very open and loose at that time and his ability to play the Hammond B-3 allowed him to crossover as well and play blues, reggae, latin and gospel. His love for jazz music prompted him to take the jazz improvisation class at Pima Community College under the tutelage of sax man Mike Kuhn and he was asked to assist him with some of the more novice musicians. This, was the turning point for what would become his passion to be a mentor and a better jazz musician. Not only as a keyboardist but as a jazz scat vocalist as well.. For a 7 year stint ('93-2000) he played in a keyboard/guitar duo with Phil Davis named L.A.P.D. at Sakura Japanese Restaurant. They reached a cult status with their penchant for playing standards and uptempo barn-burners then turning things right around to play cumbias or R&B dance tunes. Legions of Tucson-ans flocked to Sakura for their performances. During his career Lamont has tried to give back to the community through his gift of music. He has performed for the Tucson Jazz Society, the Oro Valley Jazz Festival, the Jazz Guild of Tucson, and the Rising Star Baptist Church.. He has collaborated with Tucson Jazz fixtures such as pianist Dan "Sly" Slipetsky, trumpeter Tony Frank, trombonist Rob Boone, bassist Elliot "Kirk" Kuykendal and drummer Gil Rodriguez. He has also been involved in many recording endeavors and has a gospel/Christian CD of all original songs on itunes entitled: "It's Time For Knowing". Over the last several years he has been mentoring a stable of young musicians. One is currently enrolled at the Arizona Jazz Academy. Often he will get a student who is classically trained and Lamont puts it on himself to get them to "get off the sheet" and use their hearts and ears to bring out the music that dwells within them. He has also mentored many musicians within the church. Having not been mentored himself as a young music- ian he feels that being a mentor is a great way to give the younger musicians a head start and leave a continuing musical legacy especially for the future "serious jazz musicians". Lamont had to move back to Sierra Vista to be closer to his mother. He has been an unsung hero in the Tucson Jazz Community and the JJA for 2012 would be a fitting way to acknowledge his humble persona and love of music. Beyond the Music; Jake

The Waterfront Blues Festival is right around the corner…the Fourth of July weekend, as you know. Over the years, OMN has given you inside looks at how it runs, besides keeping you informed about the musicians. Today Louis Pain is here, or King Louie as he likes to be known. We all know he's a master of the Hammond B-3, but did you know he has a thriving business renting them…including at the Blues Festival. You'll see two of them this year. He'll be playing, of course, but so will any other musician who needs one. We'll take a medium deep dive into those strange creatures, the organs not the organists and hear about the time another musician messed with one that Booker T was going to play. Here's Louis Pain.

In the late 1960s, Lowell George was playing rhythm guitar in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention when Zappa suggested George leave the band. There are conflicting versions as to why: Zappa believed George was too talented to be a backing player, he did not like the drug references in George's song “Willin',” or Zappa didn't appreciate George's fondness for pot. Regardless, George left. He connected with Roy Estrada, who had played bass in the Mothers of Invention, drummer Richie Hayward and keyboardist Bill Payne. The foursome became Little Feat, one of the most distinctive and influential bands in rock history; while “Willin'” would become one of Little Feat's most recognizable songs. As bands often do, that Little Feat lineup evolved and expanded, lasting about a decade and producing a series of critically acclaimed albums. In 1979, George dissolved Little Feat due to artistic differences with Payne and then died of a heart attack later that year at age 34. “I never quite understood Lowell's reticence to jazz,” Payne told me on the most recent episode of The Load Out Music Podcast. “I don't know, maybe he was ahead of us or we were behind.” Payne relishes all that was, and remains, of Little Feat – Lowell George included. He loves that people of all stripes still pack into music venues to see the band play, grooving side-by-side to the sounds of Little Feat songs like “Dixie Chicken” or “Fat Man in the Bathtub.” Yet, he's deeply concerned with what's occurring in American culture. “When you walk outside the concert hall, I find it tougher to hold a conversation with people that don't appreciate voting rights,” he said. “What's happening with this country and the world is beyond frightening.” Payne feels like when Little Feat plays music, however, “all those lines disappear.” Like Jeff Beck on guitar or Freddie Mercury's vocals, Payne is revered for what he can do on the keys. His work on the barrelhouse blues piano and Hammond B3 organ is legendary – considered one of the definitive rock-and-roll piano greats along with Leon Russell, Elton John and several others. Payne is so respected, in fact, that he has worked with a who's who of music elite including The Doobie Brothers, Phil Lesh, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Brown, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Robert Palmer and the list goes on and on. About a decade after George dissolved Little Feat, Payne reformed the band with holdovers Paul Barrere, Sam Clayton, Kenny Gradney and Hayward. Craig Fuller seamlessly slid into the lead vocal role and the band released Let It Roll in 1987. The album went on to become an instant success, earning Little Feat its first No. 1 hit on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, becoming certified gold and reviving interest in the band's early works. Payne said Little Feat has always an “elastic” idea and its success – from 1969 to this day – remains a product of the band's musicianship. “I think it's a direct correlation to the music,” said Payne. “It connects because of the music. Yes, we miss Lowell. Lowell was a defining and distinct voice…When it works, it works because people can grasp what the idea of what that music was and is.” More than five decades after starting Little Feat, Payne is also the last man standing. He is the only original band member still with the band. During our conversation on The Load Out, we cover a lot of ground over about an hour. Payne and I discuss his astonishing career in-and-out of Little Feat, reflections on George dissolving the band, the various incarnations of the group, Payne's love for making music and sadness for those who've passed, as well as his concerns regarding race and politics. We also zero-in on perhaps the only missing piece from Little Feat's 50-year resume: Sitting on the outside looking in at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – a remarkable hole for the group Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page calls his favorite American band. “Yeah, I'd like to see that for Little Feat,” Payne said. “I think it's well deserved. I think that if Little Feat can't get it, who the hell should?” For any concerns he may have, Payne still finds solace in the “community” that is Little Feat. Over a half-century, it's been a revolving yet consistently diverse collection of players with varied beliefs and backgrounds that has endures even now. “Music is about community,” he told me. “Art is about community.” The legendary Bill Payne has a lot to say, so sit back, enjoy and have a listen to the most recent episode of The Load Out Music Podcast.

Born in Jesup, Georgia, United States, Bramblett studied religion and psychology at the University of North Carolina, with the objective of entering the seminary. However, finding inspiration in the music of James Taylor, Carole King, and Bob Dylan, he abandoned his theological studies and pursued songwriting, soon moving to Athens, Georgia. After establishing himself as a session musician in the early 1970s, recording with artists like Gregg Allman and Elvin Bishop, Bramblett toured with bands such as the Gregg Allman Band, Sea Level, Widespread Panic, and Traffic. Bramblett, along with Chuck Leavell, has been credited with giving Sea Level, described as "a jazz-influenced spinoff from the Allman Brothers Band," a new, unique direction. Bramblett has been described as an outstanding lyricist and vocalist. The songs he wrote during his time with Sea Level have been described as "philosophical, despairing soul and funk tunes and rockers. As of 2017, Bramblett has recorded a total of fourteen albums, with the first two, That Other Mile and Light of the Night, issued by Polydor in the 1975 and 1976, and multiple albums in each succeeding decade. Bramblett's 2001 album, No More Mr. Lucky, features Bramblett playing the Hammond B-3 and saxes. Tracks on that album has been described as rich, funky, hip, and raw.In 2015, Bramblett released Devil Music. The title track was inspired by the story of Howlin' Wolf trying to reunite with his estranged mother, who had abandoned him for "playing the devil's music

Hammond B-3 organist talks about life on the bandstand and stretching out with luminaries and peers alike.
“It's hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I've written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody' is all I write about. Maybe that's why I was bound and determined to get these particular songs on this album. If people like them, then we'll be fine. But I wasn't gonna do it any other way.”For the past 20 years, Chris Knight has only made music his own way. He's released eight acclaimed albums, played thousands of electrifying live shows and built generations of fervent fans from Texas honky-tonks to Manhattan rock clubs. He's been hailed as “the last of a dying breed...a taciturn loner with an acoustic guitar and a college degree” (The New York Times) and “a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” (USA Today). Bottom line, he's hard-earned his reputation as one of America's most uncompromising and respected singer/songwriters. And now with Almost Daylight, Knight delivers the most powerful – and unexpected – music of his career.Almost Daylight is very much a Chris Knight album, familiarly featuring vivid pictures of rural characters, desperate men and hardscrabble survivors. At the same time it's unlike anything Knight has done before, with formidable testaments to compassion, redemption and even straight-up love. It's an album both tough and tender, as bare-knuckled as it is open-hearted. “I do think there's a cohesiveness to this album,” Knight explains in his thick Kentucky rasp.“The title is key, I suppose. Through all these songs, you could find a theme about seeking shelter.”Produced, mixed and mastered by Grammy-winner Ray Kennedy – best-known for his 30+ year creative partnership with Steve Earle as well as producing Chris' Enough Rope (2006),Trailer II (2009) and Little Victories (2012) albums – Almost Daylight also sounds like no other Knight record, with scorching guitars by Georgia Satellites founder and two-time Knight album producer Dan Baird, rich background vocals by Chris Clark, Siobhan Kennedy and Lee Ann Womack, and deeper instrumentation than ever before. “Chris had been playing some of these songs on the road and started developing ideas before we got to the studio,” Kennedy says. “He and I talked about keeping the Appalachian factor with banjo, fiddle, harmonica and mandolin where it felt right. It was significant that Dan was involved, as he's the man who can play guitar with the right feeling for Chris. The background vocals really brought the fire, and this lead to ideas for piano, Hammond B-3, accordion and Wurlitzer electric piano. Everything evolved from the performance of each song and I let the songs dictate what they needed in order to evolve into an album.”“I was determined not to do any acoustic songs on this album,” Chris explains. “I wanted it all to sound edgy and raw, but to feel big at the same time. We kept trying different approaches until I felt we landed on what worked. The thing is, some of my songs might take a year of writing before I even think they're ready for recording and I fretted about every one of these. I've never put a cover song on any of my records before, but there are two covers on this one. And I think it all fits together pretty good.”The album opens with “I'm William Callahan”, a defiant roar fueled by equal parts pride, memories and searing guitar. “Crooked Mile” is classic Knight, a piercing take on outsiders bound by love, while the poignant “Send It On Down” is a plaintive plea for salvation. There are tales of small-town despair (“I Won't Look Back”), ominous rural menace (“Trouble Up Ahead”) and melancholic break-ups (“Everybody's Lonely Now”). Chris' cover of Johnny Cash's “Flesh And Blood” – which originally appeared on the Dualtone 2002 (Read more at http://www.chrisknight.net)

This week, Oteil & Mike welcome brothers Alan and Neal Evans, primarily known as founding members of the Jazz-Funk trio Soulive along with guitar player Eric Krasno. Oteil first met Alan & Neal over 20 years ago, when the two were only 18 and 20 years old. Neal shares the details of his studio setup, the plethora of projects he's been working on this year, including his own YouTube channel. He also recalls an emotional moment backstage in 2000 with Oteil, a mentor to him, which propels the group to discuss the driving desire to share their knowledge as musicians. Alan & Neal also tell the strange story of having the power shut off in the middle of their Berkfest performance, a blasphemy Oteil dubs “Soulive Interruptus,” and the four discuss festivals and performances aplenty throughout the years. Brothers Alan and Neal Evans, on drums and Hammond B-3 organ, respectively, form two-thirds of the band Soulive. Rounding out the group is Eric Krasno on guitar. A funky instrumental trio, Soulive are all about danceable, organ-driven groove jazz. Their sound is a result of fusing the soul-jazz of the past with a modern hip-hop feel. The band was formed in Buffalo, New York, in the late '90s when all three members were under age 25. However, each already had a substantial background in the jam band scene. Alan and Neal are former members of Moon Boot Lover, and Alan also played with the Greyboy Allstars. Soulive toured with and opened for a number of notables (including John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks, and Robben Ford) before headlining their own shows and releasing their introductory EP, Get Down, in 1999. More recently, Alan Evans runs his own studio Iron Wax in Western Massachusetts, while touring with Matador! Soul Sounds, a band that he formed with guitarist Eddie Roberts from The New Mastersounds. Neal Evans has worked on film and television scores, as well as being an in-demand keyboardist both in the studio and on the road for a number of high profile artists. Soulive toured with and opened for a number of notables (including John Scofield, Maceo Parker, Los Lobos, Derek Trucks, and Robben Ford) before headlining their own shows and releasing their introductory EP, Get Down, in 1999.More recently, Alan Evans runs his own studio Iron Wax in Western Massachusetts, while touring with Matador! Soul Sounds, a band that he formed with guitarist Eddie Roberts from The New Mastersounds. Neal Evans has worked on film and television scores, as well as being an in-demand keyboardist both in the studio and on the road for a number of high profile artists. In this edition of Jazz Cruise Conversations Live, the noted organist (and multi-instrumentalist) Joey DeFrancesco talks with comedian Alonzo Bodden about his lifelong love of the Hammond B-3, as well as about how he was "discovered" by Miles Davis with whom he would play when he was a teenager.
In the decades following its invention, the Hammond B-3 organ changed the sound of music. Join host Blake Hargreaves as he uncovers the history of this versatile instrument and the impact it's had on both the world of music and on one of our favourite organists — Alcée Chriss III.

SOMETHING came from Baltimore the Podcast" is now has it's own show called, "Something came from Baltimore THE SHOW!" You can hear the show on exclusively on "TheBocX.com" Thursday's at 7:00pm EST. I recommend that you check out this radio station, it has a sound that I really love. There is something special going on. I am a big fan of Joey DeFrancesco I used to watch him when he was a young guy in Philadelphia with his Dad at the Orltibz Jazzhaus. It was in Northern Liberties which was totally run down at the time and down right scary, but you would hear the music a block away and when you opened the doors, there really was not a stage, but the band was basically in your face it was a long room and you had to walk around the band to get to a seat. Papa John and Joey D had duel Hammond B, it was pretty awesome. What did not make the interview was that I saw Joey in a Soul Food Restaurant in Atlantic City and he said that was one of the worst sets up ever and they still talk about it. It was a mess, I paid $25 to sit behind the band. "In the Key of the Universe" was my favorite album of 2019, I will always be a fan of Joey D's. Master of the Hammond B-3 organ, Cory Henry gathers The Funk Apostles to sing “…We all need to look at history / What we’ll find is, that it’s repeating uh huh / It won’t change ‘til, we all come together….” That’s the call on “Rise” a song that binds gospel to a universal truth; it’s time to come together for a better world.
Oh the whispering pines.....the Appalachian trail carving out a pathway towards the Mississippi Delta. The old hickory BBQ and the bourbon and the blending of gospel, blues, Bayou boogie and Jayhawkin' through the cornfields. My guest hails from the great state of Kansas. He has done and seen it all in music. Played at the Grand Ole Opry, local watering holes, Medicine Shows, Mafia laden clubs and lesbian joints. That's before during and after being a swing man on the Kansas Men's Basketball team taking a page out of Pistol Pete Maravich's play book. But my guests career runs thick, with a fearlessness and security that still holds up today. He has played with Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Hahn, Richard Manuel, Mac Rebenack, George Marsh, Maria Muldaur and Mel Graves. He has awed people over the years with his propensity to lean on that Hammond B-3 and illicit the sounds of the church and the bay, and sittin on a dock in muscle schoals Alabama with a cowboy hat and a maverick attitude. He has made albums as a leader and been a prolific sideman. He has always wanted to reflect in his music a genuine sense of originality and playing music- not the type that can be labeled, just music. That will be on full display today at the Early Bird Cafe. My guest today was rooted in his gospel upbringing. Yet in a different period in our history when church music overlapped with soul and rnb my guest was in the right place with the right sound. Originally discovered by Elvin Bishop my guest generated interest in the bay area as a Hammond B-3 specialist that could enhance the sound in country, acid rock, swing, jazz vocals. Still it was the gospel organ that drew John Kahn to my guest. The Jerry Garcia Band was at a point musically where they had burned through a bevy of keyboardists and were looking for a sound that could bridge Roots Music with Motown and boogie woogie. The swirling organ, the female vocals, the reggae pulsed rhythms. It was love in the afternoon for many years to come for all JGB fans. Melvin Seals welcome to the JFS. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support
How far is it to the end of the Universe? Maybe you'll get their by the Marakesh Express or swung into Oblivion. The Universe is mind expanding and so is pure jazz which mixes all musics in an improvisational fire storm that incorporates European Classical and The only art form this country has ever had- African Swing Music. My guest today is one of the heaviest keyboardists of all time. He took all the influences of soul music, rhythm and blues, James Brown modal chromatic chordal configurations of sound on album after album after album. You'll know when you get their when you no longer have to figure out why you were put on this earth. When that purpose becomes evident then you follow that path like my guest did like a steam locomotive coming down the track. Laying on his Hammond B-3 playing great jazz tunes and uptempo positive karma rhythms with cats from London where the Trinity and gigs with John McLaughlin. Being a leader coming up with a melody, swinging the band seeking to expand universal consciousness one ear drum at a time. The previous five shows have been about my own experiences with friends I either grew up with or met along the way. And there are more of those shows to come, but for now, I’m going to share a story, a tragic story about a teenage girl that wants more than anything to slap on some makeup, a tight pair of jeans and go to the Saturday night dance at the Harborena. My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys And my old lady she don't care My sister looks cute in her braces and boots A handful of grease in her hair Those are words by Bernie Taupin in Elton John’s Saturday Night’s Alright. I would stand in front of the band and try to absorb everything they were doing...especially the lead guitar player. It’s rare but sometimes I’ll run into a musician that played at the Harb. Steve Fossen, one of the cofounders of Heart played there. His recollection was “oh, that skating rink that was hard to find...kinda under a bridge.” There were the Lemon Pipers, Fragile Lime, Merrilee Rush...pretty much anyone with a 45 (that’s a single for you non-boomers). Throw in a teenage hormonal imbalance and yes, there were fights. So, maybe Momma had a point. Stick them on the makeshift stage that towers about one foot above the dance floor, turn it up to eleven and there ya go, A Saturday night in teenage paradise. Here’s my latest creation, Your Momma Won’t Let You Go. I think everyone had a Harborena. A place to go as a teenager to find out what the older kids had been talking about for all of those years when the best you could get away with was staying up after midnight watching super low budget monster movies. The Hammond B-3 organ gets some big love in this episode. First up is the Delvon LaMarr Organ Trio and their debut album Close But No Cigar, a Billboard #1 in the jazz charts. The band takes the well honed sound and constructs an incredibly funky outing that comes off like a live mixtape. It harkens the spirit and quotes from the titans of B-3 like Booker T. and the MG's, the Incredible Jimmy Smith, and Brother Jack McDuff. Speaking of which, The Major Scale has been waxing on for a long time about the need to spread the word on Brother Jack McDuff's overlooked spaced-out jams of the late '60s and early '70s. We take a look at a trio of albums he cut for Blue Note during this period: Moon Rappin', To Seek A New Home, and Who Knows What Tomorrow's Gonna Bring? Unlike his other work, these albums don't turn up often on playlists, but when they do they dazzle and delight with their surreal soul and hard driving funk. Crate-diggers and producers have looked to these records since the dawn of hip-hop; just ask, J Dilla, Nas (who's father plays on one of the albums) A Tribe Called Quest, or Black Moon.

Jack Teagarden-Weldon Leo "Jack" Teagarden (August 20, 1905 – January 15, 1964) was a jazz trombonist and singer. According to critic Scott Yannow of Allmusic, Teagarden was the preeminent American jazz trombone player before the bebop era of the 1940s and "one of the best jazz singers too". Teagarden's early career was as a sideman with the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Paul Whiteman and lifelong friend Louis Armstrong before branching out as a bandleader in 1939 and specializing in New Orleans Jazz-style jazz until his death. Slide Hampton-Locksley Wellington "Slide" Hampton (born April 21, 1932) is an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger. Described by critics as a master composer, arranger and uniquely gifted trombone player, Hampton's career is among the most distinguished in jazz. As his nickname implies, Hampton's main instrument is slide trombone, but he also occasionally plays tuba and flugelhorn. John Coltrane-John Coltrane departed this mortal plane more than fifty years ago; today he remains among us, more alive than ever. His sound continues to grab the ears of an ever-widening circle of fans. His legend is stone solid: planted firmly in our culture as that of any 20th century musical giant. His saxophone sound—brooding, searching, dark—is still one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. His influence stretches over styles and genres, and transcends cultural boundaries. The modern ideal of music serving a deeply spiritual, connective purpose? A defining facet of John Coltrane. Eddie Palmieri-Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years, Eddie Palmieri is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. Conrad Herwig-New York-based jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is considered one of the world’s complete jazz musicians, atop both the performing and jazz educational fields with an abundance of composer and arranger credits, as well. To date, he has released 20 recordings as a leader in addition to contributing to nearly 200 other recording sessions with some of the most notable artists in jazz. He has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano and Tom Harrell, among many others. The Latin Side of John Coltrane-John Coltrane's music has been interpreted many ways since his death in 1967 but rarely in a Latin jazz setting. Trombonist Conrad Herwig, in putting together this project, wisely avoided using any other tenor or soprano saxophonists, instead gathering together several trumpeters, either Ronnie Cuber or Gary Smulyan on baritone, flutist Dave Valentin and a crack Latin rhythm section. By varying the instrumentation and personnel on each selection, Herwig has succeeded in continually casting Coltrane's music in a new light. The opening and closing versions of "Blessing" have Milton Cardona vocalizing a brief prayer. All of the other music (with the exception of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue") are 'Trane compositions. Herwig is well showcased, as is trumpeter Brian Lynch and most of the sidemen. The results are quite fresh, often infectious and unpredictable. A fine tribute to the flexibility of John Coltrane's 1960-64 music. Iridium NY-The Iridium Jazz Club is a jazz club located on Broadway in New York City. Mingus Big Band-The Mingus Big Band celebrates the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus, who died in 1979. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, this 14-piece band performed Thursday MBB nights from 1991 to 2004 at Fez under Time Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city from May 2004 until October 2008, when it began “Mingus Mondays” at Jazz Standard where it alternates with the Mingus Orchestra and Mingus Dynasty. Bishop Nathaniel Townsley-Listen on Spotify Gospel Jubilee-Facebook page Nathaniel Townsley Jr.-Discogs Jimmy “Preacher” Robins- Jimmy Robins In terms of gruff intensity and roaring power few singers could match Jimmy Robbins. In my view he never made a bad record although his career was so fragmented - he recorded for several labels and under a couple of names - he's never really gotten either the visibility or success his wonderful voice deserved. Robins may just have been the best "underground" artist of them all and fully warranted his "Preacher" tag. In addition he wrote most of the songs he recorded and was a fine keyboard player, specialising in the Hammond B3 organ. Robins Nest Harlem-Photo Sugar Shack Harlem-”It is sadly the end of an era. After months of speculation The Sugar Shack has closed it’s doors for good. The site of impromptu gatherings, first dates, comedy shows, poetry readings and down and dirty dancing has gone from being The Sugar Shack to Striver’s Cafe and back to The Sugar Shack. In the late ’90s and early ’00 (when it was selected the Village Voice Best of 2000) you could drop into the Shack any night of the week and find something fun going on inside behind the velvet curtain. Whether it was fight night, a live band or a dj spinning the turntables, neighborhood patrons will certainly miss the good memories created at The Sugar Shack over the years. Londell’s Harlem-”Located on the threshold of Striver's Row, a historical section of Harlem, Londel's is rich in cuisine, entertainment, and social life. Known to original patrons as ''Striver's Row'', Londel's has expanded steadily and has maintained its traditional flavor in Southern, Creole, and American Comfort Cuisine.” Showman’s-”This soulful haunt of Harlem's old guard has been home to the greats (e.g. Sara Vaughan, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey) since 1942, having moved to its current location in August,1998. A Hammond B-3 organ graces the stage, and is put to good use by Danny Mixon, Seleno Clarke, Nathan Lucas and Preacher Robins among others. Hammond Organ-”The Hammond organ is an electric organ, invented by Laurens Hammond and John M. Hanert and first manufactured in 1935. Various models have been produced, most of which use sliding drawbars to specify a variety of sounds. Until 1975, Hammond organs generated sound by creating an electric current from rotating a metal tonewheel near an electromagnetic pickup, and then strengthening the signal with an amplifier so it can drive a speaker cabinet. Around two million Hammond organs have been manufactured. The organ is commonly used with, and associated with, the Leslie speaker.” Jack McDuff- Eugene McDuff (September 17, 1926 – January 23, 2001), known professionally as "Brother" Jack McDuff or "Captain" Jack McDuff, was an American jazz organist and organ trio bandleader who was most prominent during the hard bop and soul jazz era of the 1960s, often performing with an organ trio. From the swamps of southeast Georgia, born in Waycross, and raised on Southern Rock and Blues. Josh Kirkland still calls his Mother "Mama" and speaks with a cool softness, not only is he a southern gentleman, he is one intense guitarist. Josh became fascinated with the guitar at an early age, after receiving his first guitar for his 13th birthday, he began cutting his teeth on the popular rock music of the 80's but soon found himself being drawn toward the blues. Josh's father who played Hammond B-3 organ in several local bands during the 70's not only wanted his son Josh to learn the music of his own generation, but to also learn the southern rock and blues based music that he himself came up playing. Josh was soon hooked on Duane Allman's slide guitar playing, he then discovered the music of Stevie Ray Vaughan which led him to all of the blues masters and the innovative Jimi Hendrix, the rest is history. Josh Kirkland's debut cd release is a six string odyssey, full of searing guitar riffs & soulful deep southern rooted vocals. You hear all of the influences, but there is more. Josh has evolved his own distinctive style. The Josh Kirkland Band's music is a mix of Blues, Southern Rock, Jazz, Funk, R&B/Soul, Country etc. A typical Josh Kirkland Band show features songs for everyone, including original songs and covers ranging from a twangy Johnny Cash song to a jammin' Allman Brothers tune to a hard driving Jimi Hendrix cover complete with Kirkland playing screaming guitar solos with his teeth and behind his back. Truly, Kirkland is the type of player that has to be seen. Over the years Josh has supported such acts as Rick Derringer, Pat Travers, Jerry Reed, and the Marshall Tucker Band. In 2005 Josh Kirkland was selected as one of the top ten blues artists worldwide in the "Blues Idol" competition. Most recently, the Josh Kirkland Band performed at the 2006 Wanee Festival in Live Oak FL, supporting the Derek Trucks Band, Robert Randolf, the North Mississippi Allstars, Gov't Mule, the Allman Brothers Band etc.
