Roy Kinsey is the Rapbrarian, a Chicago rapper and librarian who celebrates hip-hop as a literary art form through his new special library: The Rapbrary. After recently setting up the Rapbrary's shelves in its first space, Kinsey emphasizes the power of storytelling as legacy — especially at a time when book bans are surging. He sat down with Vocalo host Nudia Hernandez to discuss the Rapbrary's goals and being mindful about the things we leave behind for future generations. This segment originally aired on Nudia in the Afternoons on Tuesday, Oct. 29. It was produced by Nudia Hernandez and edited by Morgan Ciocca. Levi and Roy discuss what Paid in Full (2002) says about hustle and opportunity, while reflecting on their own choices that allowed them to define and strive for a different version of success.
My guest today, Chicago-born and raised, Roy Kinsey, is a bit of an anomaly. A black, queer-identified, rapper, and librarian or as he puts it, Rapbrarian. Roy’s escape from trauma and creative outlet as a kid was writing and music and also a love of books and learning. He began sharing his words and beats, rapping at a young age, but really began to elevate his pursuit of music-making in college, performing and refining his craft. Graduating, he began making a name for himself, performing, recording and releasing albums, while simultaneously earning degrees that would find him working as a librarian by day and an artist by night.A few albums in, Roy began to feel like an essential part of him was being kept from his music and also his community, so he made the decision to come out as queer on an album at a time very few others in the space of rap and hip-hop were out. It was a moment that would transform him and his music. Roy has since released a series of powerful albums, including his latest powerful reflection, KINSEY: A Memoir (http://www.roykinsey.com/shop). He’s been featured on the cover of major local publications like Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune, in and on major national, and international publications like Billboard, LA Times, NPR, WBEZ’s Vocalo. And Roy has even found a way to bring his love of music and books together, running workshops as a librarian in the Teen Services/Youmedia department for Chicago Public Libraries. You can find Roy Kinsey at:Website : http://www.roykinsey.com/Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/roy_kinsey/Check out our offerings & partners: Backcountry: The best outdoor gear online for people who love to get outside. I’m Adam, I’m a CFI, A&P/IA and cofounder of Airplane Intel. If you’re a long-time listener, welcome back, it’s great to see you! If you’re new to the show, welcome aboard, it’s great to have you along for the ride! On the show, we compare airplanes, interview aircraft owners and industry experts, and of course, share our real-world experience as professional pilots, mechanics, and inspectors working in the field everyday with airplane buyers, owners, and operators.A few weeks ago, I was invited to Pensacola, Florida to meet my friends and long-time supports of the podcast, Tal and Pace Clark of Coflyt.com. You guys all know how much I love Coflyt, a really neat desktop and mobile app that helps you manage your airplane. So when I was invited out to Pensacola, I was pretty excited. While there, I met up with Tal and Pace, got a tour of Coflyt headquarters, saw the Blue Angles practicing in their new F/A-18 Super Hornets, and had the privilege of meeting today’s guest, Mr. Roy Kinsey. Roy is an amazing guy – not only is he a respected attorney here in Florida, he also owns and flies three airplanes – a Mitsubishi MU-2, Cessna 140, and get this, a Boeing Stearman! Roy will share what it’s like to own these airplanes and gives us a unique perspective into how airplanes can be used to give back. Roy is an inspiration to me as well as many others. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did.

Earlier this week we talkedwith a librarian…who’s also a rapper. Or, is that a rapper who’s also alibrarian? Either way, Chicago’s Roy Kinsey is a unique Chicago artist whoserecent work is getting a lot of attention. He sat down to talk about hispersonal journey, and how he’s always aware of how his family’s stories shapedwho he’s become. And you can’t talk with a hip hop librarian without talking about authors. And you can’t talk about authors in Chicago without mentioning Lorraine Hansberry. Hansberry is known best for her seminal play “A Raisin In The Sun”. But while many of us are familiar with Hansberry the writer, few people know about Hansberry the person. Princeton professor Imani Perry aims to change that with her new biography “Looking for Lorraine: the Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry”. Let’s listen in as Perry fills in some details of Lorraine’s short but fascinating life with WBEZ’s Natalie Moore.
