Brenna Johnson was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. What she loves most about high school sports is the teamwork, competition, and the rewards of hard work. They give her a chance to push herself while working toward a common goal with her teammates. The thrill of competition is amazing and she expressed that it is like a mini vacation from the real world. She believes sports help her stay coachable and adaptable. Brenna competes in basketball, volleyball, and track and field. She is involved in the academic honor roll, student council, homecoming committee, high school rodeo, yearbook, high school helpers, and FFA. Outside of school and sports, Brenna gives back to her community by volunteering at the Sioux City Library Read to Me program with her dog Kota, cleaning the fairgrounds before the fair, serving community members by offering a soup lunch, Hornick Corner cleaned up and installation of a new sign. She also participates in the Willow Workers Thanksgiving food drive, teddy bear toss, Valentine drive for the Pleasant View Nursing home, NICU blanket drive, sock drive for Socktober, the Sloan Easter egg hunt, and has hosted the Salix Easter egg hunt with her 4-H club. Brenna feels agriculture is all around her. The food she eats, the clothes she wears, the activities that she participates in, and the land she lives on. Her family is involved in a lot of the aspects of agriculture. It's amazing how everything from sports to daily life connects to this important part of her world. Although undecided on a college to attend, Brenna would like to play basketball in the winter and still be able to rodeo in the summer. She is interested in studying a major that deals with adolescent psychology or sports psychology. InsTech, has launched its "State of Irish Insurtech Report 2024, to position Ireland as a global centre for insurance innovation, where industry giants and start-ups can come together to collaborate and create the next generation of insurance solutions. The findings of the new report were presented to Minister of State for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance, Neale Richmond in a productive meeting on the potential for the sector. As the independent, neutral convener InsTech.ie plays a pivotal role in Ireland becoming a leader for insurance technology and insurance innovation. It champions Irish Insurtechs, supporting them to scale into international markets, by building awareness of the depth and breadth of insurance innovation emerging from Ireland. Founding members include AA, Allianz, Aviva, Axa, FBD, Irish Life, VHI, Laya, Scor, Unum and RSA/123.ie. One of the first activities InsTech.ie conducted back in 2022 was the mapping of the indigenous Insurtechs in Ireland. Each year InsTech updates this map and it has now grown to 114 Insurtechs. To coincide with the release of the latest version of the map, InsTech.ie conducted a survey of Irish Insurtechs to gain a better understanding of the landscape in Ireland and learn more about how it can support them to scale and encourage better, stronger collaboration across the ecosystem. On receiving the report Minister for State at the Department of Finance, Neale Richmond said, "Innovation in the Insurtech sector has the potential to pass on huge benefits to customers. Ireland hosts all of the world's top 10 global software companies and 11 of the top 15 global insurers. With a strong track record in both insurance and technology, Ireland has all of the elements to create a powerful cluster of insurance innovation and is a natural hub for the next wave of disruptive Insurtech firms. This InsTech report gives us a framework to explore the opportunities." On the launch of the report InsTech.ie CEO Gary Leyden said, "We have seen huge growth in the number and funding of Insurtech startups in Ireland and it has the potential to be a global centre for insurance innovation . The main finding of the survey this year is that there is an acknowledgement between incumbents and startups in the insurance sector that they can work together to a greater extent and have an increasing appetite to do so. This has the potential to deliver better experiences to consumers. " Leyden added, "InsTech.ie will be the forum to encourage greater innovation and we will be announcing more initiatives to support incumbents and startups collaborate and innovate together in the coming months." Some key findings of the survey in the report include: Background of Founders: 39% of founders came from an insurance background. Interestingly, a greater number of respondents stated that they came from a non-financial services background. Ambition: 90 percent Insurtech startups are seeking to enter into new markets. Challenges: Founders listed "resistance to change" as the main barriers to implementing technological innovations in the insurance industry. Potential for innovation: 68.7percent of stakeholders surveyed said emerging technologies (e.g., AI, blockchain) were "essential for innovation and growth." Ireland has witnessed a range of successful startup ventures, with the Irish Insurtech cluster being led by Fineos. Fast-growing companies such as Kota and DOCOsoft are also providing crucial technological solutions for the insurance industry. Working with their large incumbent members and these startups InsTech.ie aims to accelerate further collaboration and innovation in the industry. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I crack open the words "Well Worn", our most recent Kota exploration in The Haven. What comes to mind when you hear those words? An established footpath, a threadbare object, or a pair of shoes that have served you well? Thread Bear “Well” can be about health, satisfaction, or abundance. Yet it can also signify something done with care and purpose. “Worn,” on the other hand, evokes the passing of time, established use, and tiredness. It's about what we put on, what shapes us, and what degrades over time. All of my life, I have been wearing them, the hand-me-downs, the pants too long, arms of sweaters stretched longer than mine, sleeves of shirts I rolled up like newspapers, those shoulders that would never stay in place, always remembering: we are here to fit in. And the very shoes that narrowed on my feet,I gave away or traded up for other people's soles.I have thought somewhere there must be menwhose socks don't shrink, whose buttons stay put, whose shirts never wear out at the elbows.I paid for what other people gave away. All of my life I wanted to stand tall, but as I grew up my clothes kept wearing out, whenin my child's heart, I only wanted the comfort of corduroy,a face that didn't need ironing, a crease that would stay put—these labels I hoped wouldn't rub off.—Michael Magee The Key Areas The prompt evoked a bunch of areas to explore in our gathering. I have attempted to touch on as many as I can remember in this episode. It took us in some helpful directions where we were able to think about our relationship with creativity, sensitivity, and the stuff that matters most in life. Wearing The Skin We Are In We talked about how skin can tell a story of our lives through callouses, scars, and the marks of time. We considered how thick skin is earned through persistence and repetition, not something you simply "have". The Beauty of Imperfection I shared my love for how dents, stains, and wear give character to things. They signpost us to memories and stories in ways perfection can't. Well Worn Strength We thought about analogies like sanding down wood, a tree's established tension wood, and knocking in a cricket bat as examples of how wear enhances strength, potential, and longevity. It helps us go further, sustain longer, and refine our abilities. A Well-Worn Punch Life will throw setbacks and surprises our way. What does it mean to wear these punches well? Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve We discussed the meaning of this phrase and whether it's possible to wear your heart on your sleeve well (or poorly). Traditions, Rituals, and Relationships Well-worn habits, rituals, and traditions for individuals, relationships, and communities can help us connect with meaning and creative presence. But they can also grow stale and stagnant. How can we tell the difference? Cliche and Jargon When words are overused, their original meaning can be diluted and impotent. To Repair or Replace We discuss the balance between repairing what we value and knowing when to let go of what's no longer serving us. Sentimental Value Items we love show the marks of time, love, and use. Their value transcends markets and money. Over to You How do you interpret the phrase "Well Worn"? I'd love to hear from you. If you fancy exploring with other gentle rebels, come and join us in The Haven.

Navigating the Complexities of Financial ManagementIn a recent podcast episode, host Josh engages in a compelling conversation with Tevia Hoalst, the founder of TeKoda Accounting. The discussion delves into the accounting industry, its current challenges, and the pivotal role of company culture in fostering a successful business environment. Tevia shares her unique perspective on the importance of having a reliable financial partner and offers practical advice for business owners navigating their financial management. This blog post will break down the key insights from the episode, providing actionable advice and thorough explanations to guide business owners in managing their financials effectively.Tevia begins by explaining the origin of the name "TeKoda," a creative blend of her name and a previous company name, "Kota." This unique branding strategy not only sets her apart in search results but also reflects her innovative approach to business. TeKoda Accounting aims to "obliterate the status quo" in the accounting industry, focusing on creating a positive culture for employees and, in turn, enhancing the client experience. Their services encompass a wide range of accounting functions, including bookkeeping, payroll, and invoicing. TeKoda Accounting partners with CPAs for tax-related matters, ensuring comprehensive financial management for their clients. One of the most pressing issues in the accounting sector is the impact of AI. While AI has the potential to streamline certain processes, Tevia believes that it cannot replace the human element of financial management. AI can automate repetitive tasks, but the strategic and analytical aspects of accounting still require human expertise. We leave things in many places for a variety of reasons. The questions we explored in our Kota this week were: what is being left,… This post first appeared on The Haven: Let's Leave It There
Welcome to The Gentle Rebel Podcast, where we explore the intersection of high sensitivity, creativity, and culture. In this episode, we take a creative lens to the phrase “Let's leave it there,” inspired by a recent live Kota gathering in The Haven. This simple prompt opened up a rich bucket of ideas, and I'd love to share a few of the layers we started peeling back. Inspired By An Old Ironing Board It began with an old ironing board that I noticed outside someone's house on an evening stroll. It sparked a chain of thoughts: Who left it there? How did it end up there? Who is it for? My walk was consumed by thoughts of the many potential ways to look at the phrase, “Let's leave it there”. As well as physical objects like ironing boards and root vegetables (don't ask) we often use to signal the end of something—a project, an argument, a meeting. It's a way of acknowledging that we've reached a natural stopping point or closing something down, even if it's unresolved. Creativity and Patience In our Kota gathering, we explored how these words apply to creativity—for example, setting conditions for desirable habits and practices to happen without constantly tweaking and meddling. Being patient and trusting the process can be challenging when primed to expect instant results. However, impatience can lead to unnecessary tinkering, which might sabotage the natural rhythms and pace. Whilst "build it, and they will come" is not always true, we can create conditions (in suitable environments) that make the desirable thing a simpler and easier option. Creative Ecosystems We also discussed the joy of making creativity accessible. Leaving tools and materials out, ready to use, can make a huge difference. It's less likely to occur to us to play with something in its case and tidied away than if it's obvious and available. Sharing and Letting Go It can be hard to leave it there when it comes to sharing our creative endeavours with the world. We talked about literally leaving things in spaces for others to find, like hiding tiny storybooks, drawings, or poems in public places for people to discover and pass on. Leave It There - Enough is Enough Finally, we talked about knowing when to stop and trust the process. There are moments when, even though we might not feel ready, we know at a deeper level that we've done enough. We need to trust the part of us that made that decision and avoid the temptation to open up and run it "one last time", especially from a state of anxiety or fear, which might lead to new mistakes and unnecessary bonus panic. If any ideas we explored in this episode speak to you and you'd like to dive deeper with me, you can book a Pick The Lock call. If you'd like to peel back the layers on future prompts with me and our gentle hive of like-spirited folk, I'd love you to join us in The Haven.
