This week, we are recapping our experience attending History Of The Bay, an event organized by fellow Bay Area hip-hop podcaster Dregs One. While it did not result in any usable interviews, DBRP co-hosts David Ma and Nate LeBlanc were glad to spend an afternoon immersed in the Bay Area's unique musical culture and to see performances from rappers such as Rappin' 4-Tay, B-Legit, and Kamaiyah. For this week's interview, DBRP host Demone Carter caught up with recurring guest and brilliant rapper Nappy Nina. Getting to know Nina and watching her level up her career has been one of the highlights of creating our show. We have been checking in with her in person and online for the past few years, and we are excited about her new collaborative project with producer Swarvy Nothing Is My Favorite Thing, out now. Dad Bod Rap Pod is produced by Demone Carter. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Brought to you by the good homies at Stony Island Audio

Growing up in Vallejo's Hillside neighborhood, B-Legit talks about his early days being influenced by the D-Boy culture of the 80s while also discovering hip-hop. While attending Grambling University for a year with E-40, they started rapping and decided to come back to Vallejo and form a group. From there, they created Sick Wid It Records and innovated business strategies to take independent rap music to the next level. This led to a deal with Jive Records and B-Legit has been a fixture in rap music ever since. In this episode he also discusses 2pac, Mac Dre, C-Bo, and many other highlights from his career. -- Sponsored by Christopher's Bakery @christophersbakery420 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- Hat and hoodie by REBEL 8 https://rebel8.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:39 Growing up in a musical family 04:52 Vallejo in the 70s-80s 08:29 The D-Boy Era 13:49 Grambling University 17:05 MVP “The Kings Men” (first album) 24:09 The Click & mobb music 27:38 Sick Wid It Records 31:17 B-Legit the Savage “Tryin To Get A Buck” 33:33 Sick Wid It deal with Jive Records 38:28 Levitti 39:55 Bay Area rap scene 43:10 “Ghetto Smile” with Daryl Hall 45:33 “City 2 City” 47:30 Working with 2pac 53:49 Mac Dre 58:28 “Hempin Ain't Easy,” leaving Jive 1:03:27 The Bela Blunt 1:06:17 Longevity --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

A contemporary of artists like Robert Crumb, Vaughn created characters like Cheech Wizard, the Bodē Lizards, and the Bodē Broads. Known for his Erotica series of art, Vaughn ventured into psychedelic art and deep spirituality. Although he died when Mark was only 12, Vaughn taught his son to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career as an artist. Mark kept his father's characters alive and also created his own comics like "Miami Mice." This led him to work with Kevin Eastman on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. As his father's character started appearing in New York subway graffiti, Mark embraced the works of writers like Dondi, Seen, Zephyr and Revolt. With roots in San Francisco, Mark has also been a big part of the Bay Area graffiti scene while also bringing his father's characters into murals, tattoos, animation, and much more. -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- Filmed at @dyingbreedsf 3045 24th Street, San Francisco - graffiti supplies, original clothing and more --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:52 Art commissions 05:29 Vaughn Bodē's early life and career 13:07 Underground comix of the 60s 16:23 Erotica 20:35 Mark learning from his father 26:06 Psychedelic rock, David Bowie 31:14 Ralph Bakshi 35:39 Vaughn's passing 39:08 Mark's early comic art 43:31 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 46:31 Bodē characters in graffiti 57:23 Bay Area graffiti 01:00:15 Future projects --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

But she started with humble beginnings going through the foster care system in Oakland. Inspired by people from Missy Elliot to 2pac, Kamaiyah started writing poetry at a young age and eventually working with local rappers like DB The General and D-Lo. When she started dropping her own solo projects, this eventually led her to sign a record deal with YG's 4Hunnid Entertainment. Although she created hits for YG and Drake, and had an album in the works with Kehlani, she grew frustrated with the label situation and went independent. Now Kamaiyah continues to put out her projects independently and prove why she is one of the most unique voices in hip-hop today. --- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 02:15 Musical influences 04:03 Growing up in foster care 15:41 Musical influences 20:52 The Hyphy movement 23:46 Recording with DB The General, D-Lo 25:29 “How Does It Feel” blowing up 31:49 Celebrities 35:42 Signing to YG 38:26 Album with Kehlani 40:49 Women in the music industry 44:28 Female rappers 51:06 Going independent --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

Danisha Lomax is a sought-after keynote speaker, innovator, and creator. Her purpose is to provide pathways for untold stories to emerge because reclamation and co-conspiratorship depend on storytelling. First to create and hold the role of Head of Client Inclusivity and Impact for Digitas North America, she develops programs focused on authenticity, cultural influence, and impact. In this position, she works to bring clients along the inclusive journey through the Multicultural Center of Excellence - a collective that sits at the intersection of race, culture, identity, and brand responsibility.   Bolstering a brand's impact is next to none. Danisha was instrumental in developing Sephora's The Beauty of Blackness, a documentary about Fashion Fair Cosmetics, the first Black-owned beauty brand. The film is the first of its kind to be acquired by Max and won the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival's Tribeca X Award, among others. Adding to her film repertoire, The Foundation of Belleza tells a generational story of Latina beauty and cultural pride through the eyes of Latina founders. Danisha's story continues; she is critically aware of the continuous lack of equity in the creator space. With TikTok and Sephora, she co-developed an industry-changing Incubator partnership. It is the first program that provides access, opportunities, and overinvestment to BIPOC founders and rising creators. Her creator advocacy has scaled across categories, specifically gaming and financial literacy.   Her experience allowed her multiple nominations and awards, including ADCOLOR Rockstar Nominee (2023), AdMonsters + AdExchanger Top Women in Media & Ad Tech Awards, DE&I Champion (2023), Campaign US' Media Planner of the Year (2021), among others.   While also dedicating time to individually mentor rising stars, Danisha has served as a board member for organizations that elevate young girls, queer, non-binary, and women of color, including Girl Ventures and SFWPC. She is a founding member of OhHey Coach Collective, Board President of Sol Sisters, an advisor to Hello Hapi, and part of the 4As Diversity Steering Committee. Yet, her most humbling charge is being the parent and guide to her two children, Kamaiyah and Ke'aun. When trouble strikes in music town, there's one guy who gets the call. That's me, Joe Treble, forensic musicologist. This week, I've got one of the most shocking cases I've ever worked. Someone killed the key change in pop music, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to find the perpetrator. The key change used to be at large on the Billboard charts. From the 1950s to the 1990s, 20-30% of all number one hits featured one. In Whitney Houston's “I Wanna Dance With Somebody," the key change hits right before the final chorus. The song's harmonic center shifts up, raising the pitch of the song, challenging the vocalist to hit higher and higher notes, juicing the big finish with excitement and pep. But starting in the 1990s the key change virtually disappeared from the Hot 100. Now, hit songs start and end in the same key, and no one seems to have even noticed. Except for me. This investigation will bring me face to face with a rogue's gallery of suspects and sources: Chris Dalla Riva, music and data specialist; Brandon McFarland, alias 1-O.A.K., producer; Emily King, singer and songwriter. Each interrogation brings me closer revealing the murdered, but I be able to handle the terrible truth? Tune in as I tackle the hardest case of my career: the case of the missing key change! Songs Discussed Emily King - Georgia Sleepwalker, Medal, The Way that You Love Me YG, Kamaiyah, RJ, Mitch, Ty Dolla $ign - Do Yo Dance (feat. The Bay Area's outsized contribution to hip-hop has often been overlooked. But this week KQED launched a yearlong project called That's My Word, an exploration into the history and influence of Bay Area hip-hop. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the genre that started in New York and moved west. The Bay has played a crucial role as a haven for artists including Mac Dre, Keak Da Sneak, Kamaiyah, Digital Underground, MC Hammer, Too Short and E-40 among many others. We'll listen to some notable tracks and talk with the project creators about how the Bay Area's music, vibe and culture gave rise to a distinct blend of hip-hop. Guests: Nastia Voynovskaya, associate editor, KQED Arts Pendarvis Harshaw, columnist, KQED Arts; host, KQED's "Rightnowish" podcast Gabe Meline, senior editor, KQED Arts & Culture Eric Arnold, veteran hip-hop journalist; contributor editor for KQED's That's My Word series

On today's episode I speak with filmmakers Laurence Madrigal & Jason O'Mahony. Their new documentary WE WERE HYPHY just premiered at Cinequest 2022. Great film, great chat! Thanks for listening! Kyler -- Social and Web: WE WERE HYPHY Instagram: @wewerehyphy Website: www.wewerehyphy.com -- PRESS RELEASE: WE WERE HYPHY is delighted to announce its World Premiere as part of the prestigious Cinequest 2022 Film Festival. The music documentary captures the hugely kinetic Hyphy movement, and brings the sights and sounds of the San Francisco Bay Area's most influential musical movement of the past 30 years to life on the screen. This music documentary feature traces Hyphy's genesis on Bay Area streets and examines its influence with interviews from legendary figures such as Keak da Sneak and Mistah FAB to modern day artists such as Kamaiyah, Rafael Casal, P-Lo, and G-Eazy who grew up during the movement and were deeply influenced by it. Historical context is provided by columnists and academics such as Pendarvis Harshaw and Dr. Andrea L.S. Moore. “Hyphy had a massive influence on me as a teenager,” says Laurence Madrigal, director of WE WERE HYPHY. “I grew up in Antioch and Hyphy was everywhere. It was on the streets, in our cars, in the clothes we wore, and in the way we spoke. I've always wanted to share my love of Hyphy with the world and this film is a love song to the era!”
