Those of us who survived the 60s did have one invaluable take-away ... culture follows music. While powerful anti-establishment lyrics did temporarily redirect the war industry, so we thought, those tumultuous times we're orchestrated to plant insidious seeds for a larger psyop that would later reveal itself. On this Alfacast we have a delightful musical talent making waves through music, but with eyes wide open. Grant ‘Prezence' Ellman is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer from Sedona, Arizona. His 2021 truth-bomb dismantling the SCAM of “covid” and “government” was censored from Spotify within a week of release. Prezence is fiercely devoted to his mission of spreading TRUTH, FREEDOM and LOVE through radio ready records, vivid videos and lucid live performances. His studio work is completely self-produced, mixed, mastered, shot, edited and promoted, with a true DIY ethos and work ethic. On stage, Prezence captivates audiences by live looping multiple instruments, singing soulful vocals & live mixing — "dubbing" his loops. His innovative Ableton Live rig pays homage to dub pioneers King Tubby & Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as modern dub masters Umberto Echo and Laurent “Tippy I” Alfred. With heavy inspiration from the modern reggae of Midnite, Protoje, Jesse Royal, Kabaka Pyramid, Grant weaves elements of funk, jazz and rock into a sonic tapestry that is uniquely, and undeniably, Prezence. In just one false election cycle, he's released three albums worth of singles, videos to boot. His empowering energy has graced main stages at Rise & Vibes, Unison, Music & Sky, Totality, Viva Iriezona, Anarchapulco, The Greater Reset, where he's supported the likes of Steel Pulse, Tribal Seeds, Kabaka Pyramid, The Elovaters, The Movement, Mike Love and Dub FX — just to name a few. Prezence is grateful to have found his life's purpose making music and sharing that gift with others. Please join this episode as we have an insightful discussion on the present state of our world, and if we're lucky, Prezence just may entertain us with an inspiring tune. Reggae legend King Kong, also known as Dennis Thomas, emerged in the early 1980s Jamaican music scene alongside other iconic artists like Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty. His talent was quickly recognized by the legendary producer King Tubby, who brought him on board to record several singles for the Firehouse label, including "Step On Dem Corn," "Aids," and "Babylon."As digital music began to reshape the soundscape in 1985, King Kong collaborated with Anthony Red Rose on the hit song "Two Big Bull Ina One Pen." He later joined forces with producer King Jammy, churning out successive hits like "Legal We Legal," "Trouble Again," and "Mix Up" between 1985 and 1986. King Kong's versatility was further showcased during this period through his work with other labels including Black Scorpio, Bunny Lee, and Prince Jazzbo. In the late 1980s, King Kong's career took him beyond Jamaica to the United States and Canada, where he established his own label, Conscious Music.King Kong continued to make his mark in the late 1980s with a tribute song, "He Was A Friend," dedicated to the late reggae artist Tenor Saw. He then set his sights on new horizons, traveling to London in the early 1990s. There, he collaborated with several prominent figures in the reggae scene, including Mafia & Fluxy, Fashion Records, and Gussie P. He also linked up with the New York-based label Massive B.King Kong's creative spark remained evident in 1990 when he recorded a dubplate, a custom-made reggae record, titled "Call Mr. Madden." While initially unreleased, the song's potential was undeniable. Two years later, producer Bobby Konders decided to share "Call Mr. Madden" with the world, and it became a dancehall hit. Interestingly, the Fugees would later draw inspiration from this title for their smash hit "Fu-Gee-La" released in 1996.Despite these successes, King Kong's reggae career maintained a sporadic presence on the global stage.Reggae Reignited: Later Years and Continued SuccessAfter facing legal troubles in the mid-1990s, King Kong returned to Jamaica and reconnected with producer King Jammy, releasing tracks like "Seize All Guns" and "Break Down The Walls." However, it was the New York label Massive B who truly reignited his artistic fire. Collaborations with them produced inspirational songs like "Jah Is My Best Friend," "Earth Is The Lord," and "I Feel A Joy."King Kong's adventurous spirit then led him to Ethiopia in 2007. This new chapter culminated in the 2012 release of his 10th album, "Ethiopian Dream," a collaboration with the Dutch label King Shiloh. Singles like "Sweet Rub A Dub" and a cover of "Door Peeper" kept the momentum going. In 2017, he dropped an EP titled "In The Old Capital" featuring five tracks and their dub versions, produced by Old Capital Records.King Kong's artistic wellspring continued to flow in 2018 with the release of the acclaimed album "Repatriation" on the Irie Ites Records label. With a career spanning over 35 years and boasting an impressive discography of 12 albums and countless singles, King Kong remains a force to be reckoned with in the reggae world mark the minds of fans of the artist!https://www.irieites.net/https://www.facebook.com/irie.ites/https://soundcloud.com/irie-ites-recordshttps://www.youtube.com/user/IRIEITESMANAJAHhttps://twitter.com/IRIEITESRECORDSWho Needs a Superhero When You Have Whipped Body Butter?Dry, itchy skin? Incoming transmission from Hopeton Overton Brown, better known as Scientist. As a protege of dub pioneer King Tubby, Scientist represents dub's third generation—at least that's how his 1981 collaboration with Tubby and Prince Jammy, First Second, and Third Generation, puts it. Originating in Kingston, Hopeton earned his nickname from Bunny Lee due to his highly complex mixing skills, who famously opined, "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist.” These days he's living in Los Angeles, where he joined host Jason P. Woodbury for this all-new episode. Prepare to cover a lot of ground, as we move from his origins at Channel One and Tuff Gong to divine messages, run-ins with Lee "Scratch" Perry, aliens and angels, simulation theory, his suspicions about modern cannabis strains, the digital vs analog debate, and much more. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Keep the servers humming and help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. Already in 2024 we have seen a slew of amazing Dub tracks being released. This is a continuous mixtape weaving together the classic foundation and the new excitement. Mexican Institute Of Sound's newest single (with Ceci Bastida) release is Stop! It accompanies an amazing album of career retrospective oro. Camilo Lara's music is always perfecto and he is an artist I play more than most on my radio shows. Black Grape are back with a new album Pumpkin Head, and in my opinion it's the best one since Isn't It Great…And this record is great and more. It's filled with slow burning dub sounds that are almost torch song ballads - and the emotional intelligence is more than we could have hoped for from a long term functioning twisted melon. It's bloody fantastic. Also featuring Panda Bear, Sonic Boom, Adrian Sherwood, MU, Kassa Overall, Andrae Murchison, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Manu Chao, LKJ, Dennis Bovell, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Johnny Clarke, King Tubby, Sly & Robbie and loads more! This show was first broadcast on the 2nd of February, 2024For more info and tracklisting, visit: https://thefaceradio.com/matt-pape-mixtape/Tune into new broadcasts of Matt Pape Mixtape, Friday from 12 - 1 AM EST / 5 - 6 AM GMT.Dig this show? I was iniated into dub last century when I picked up the 21st Century Dub compilation cassette. I already loved reggae, but dub was much more expansive, mysterious, and supple. It was psychedelic. And so, over the years, I explored dub. King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry were my guides in this dimension. The more I listened, the more I heard dub's influences everywhere. I heard it in punk, goth, industrial, etc. Dub is singular because it can absorb any genre's musical distinctiveness and make it its own. I'd often don the guide of King Dub during my late-night shows at WMFO. I'd talk in a patois and pitch shift my voice down a notch to sound like a deejay from the deepest realms of dub. And I'd play some of the deepest, low-end frequency dub I could get my hands on. Today's mix captures the spirits of those nights. I hope you enjoy it. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Tim McManus of Island House Recordings. See you then. Operating on a relaxed schedule, playing a show by the river, and a collection of scattered tracks. Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP, The Molochs) "The CUSP, a change, a prophecy, a realization that what once was will soon be no more. For Los Angeles' Lucas Fitzsimons, The CUSP is not just apropos new solo project but a new creative beginning. Disillusioned and stymied by his former band The Molochs, Fitzsimons felt chewed up and spit out by a vague but all too familiar enemy. From Primavera Sound to pushin' popcorn at a local theatre, lost inspiration and a confused mind became good fodder for change. As Fitzsimons recalls, “It took a while to admit I didn't want to do my old band anymore. I just didn't wanna do it. After nearly a decade with the Molochs, I couldn't imagine starting something new without it seeming like some sort of desperate attempt to stay afloat. It was undeniable, though, and I had, I HAVE, no choice. A little part of me had to die in order for the Cusp to be born. Whatever died made room for something new.” Fitzsimons found new inspiration in the off kilter poetry-like lyrics of Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, The DIY philosophy of Nipsey Hussle and Tommy Wright III, the bass heavy dub productions of King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood, and the psyched out rhymes of P-Funk. “I started hearing something different in music… the Dylanesque wordiness was shoved away by bass lines, by groovy drum beats, by sparse (yet eloquent) lyrics. I found a sub bass had more to say to me than heady lyrical verses.”" Excerpt from https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com/track/gum-2 The CUSP: Instagram: @luquilasoda Bandcamp: https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos
This month we're heading back to 1976 where only one of us existed yet, to explore a smorgasbord of punk, prog, krautrock, funk, dub, pop, disco, folk, reggae, metal, & whatever the hell the Hollies song classifies as. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Boney M, CAN, The Damned, Dillinger, Dr Feelgood, Bob Dylan, Electric Light Orchestra, Flamin' Groovies, Peter Frampton, The Hollies, Jean-Michel Jarre, Judas Priest, KISS, Steve Miller Band, The Modern Lovers, King Tubby & Augustus Pablo, Parliament, Rainbow, Ramones, The Real Thing, Max Romeo & The Upsetters, Rush, Klaus Schulze, Bob Seger, Van Der Graaf Generator, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, & Warren Zevon.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4uuaF2z2giwA5OBbH7LxbT?si=ffd7a22f3065434cFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Virtuality has entered our lives making anything we desire possible. We are, as Gorillaz once sang, in an exciting age where 'the digital won't let [us] go…' Technology has revolutionized music, especially in the 21st century where the traditional rules and conventions of music creation, consumption, distribution, promotion, and performance have been erased and substituted with unthinkable and exciting methods in which absolutely anyone can explore, enjoy, and participate in creating and listening to music. Virtual Music: Sound, Music, and Image in the Digital Era (Bloomsbury, 2021) explores the interactive relationship of sound, music, and image, and its users (creators/musicians/performers/audience/consumers). Areas involving the historical, technological, and creative practices of virtual music are surveyed including its connection with creators, musicians, performers, audience, and consumers. Shara Rambarran looks at the fascination and innovations surrounding virtual music, and illustrates key artists (such as Grace Jones, The Weeknd), creators (such as King Tubby, Kraftwerk, MadVillain, Danger Mouse), audiovisuals in video games and performances (such as Cuphead and Gorillaz), audiences, and consumers that contribute in making this musical experience a phenomenon. Whether it is interrogating the (un)realness of performers, modified identities of artists, technological manipulation of the Internet, music industry and music production, or accessible opportunities in creativity, the book offers a fresh understanding of virtual music and appeals to readers who have an interest in this digital revolution. Shara Rambarran is Assistant Professor of Music at Bader International Study Centre, UK (Queen's University, Canada). She co-runs the Art of Record Production conferences and is an editor on the Journal on the Art of Record Production and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality (2016). When ska band Sad Snack recorded a ska version of The Mountain Goats' beloved "No Children," Mountain Goats singer-songwriter John Darnielle got so excited, that he invited the group to open for them at their San Francisco show. It was all hands on deck for Ska No Children. And during Sad Snack's performance, John and other members of the group got on stage and skanked. It was clear that it wasn't his first time skanking. And indeed, he went to many ska shows and skanked during his formative years in Southern California, even though he was an artsy goth kid that made fun of the ska kids. Now as an adult, he can admit that he has a particular love for classic Jamaican ska and the 2 Tone bands like The Selecter, The Specials, Madness and The English Beat. On this episode, we talk about all things ska with John Darnielle. He compares Lee "Scratch" Perry to Tolstoy, he explains why The Specials' "Ghost Town" is one of the greatest songs of all time, and he tells us about the "Fuck Art, Let's Dance" buttons that all the ska kids at his high school would wear. But we talk about so much more, including Propagandhi, pro-wrestling, "Superman" by Goldfinger, Desmond Dekker, King Tubby's sound system, the beauty of heavy metal and why everyone wrongfully associates ska with horns. Welcome to Ska Boom Stories which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon. The goal of the Ska Boom podcast is talk about ska with an emphasis on American ska history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today. Though Augustus Pablo never gained the international recognition of a Bob Marley, he is one of reggae's legitimate legends, a pioneer who flipped the genre completely upside down. Along with producer King Tubby, Pablo helped to pioneer dub – no mean feat considering his main instrument was the lowly plastic melodica. The fact is that Pablo was the first musician to popularize the melodica and had a direct influence on other more mainstream bands that added the plastic instrument to their songs. Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George and appears on the Pantheon Podcasts. This episode of the Ska Boom podcast is sponsored by BetterHelp.com. In this week's episode Tim and Jeremy dive headlong into Dub. They discuss the changing meaning of the term, the difficulties in charting the history of the music, and explore the work of two of the pioneers of the sound, Lee 'Scratch' Perry and King Tubby. Jeremy and Tim discuss the sonic properties of dub, including the innovative use of reverb and delay, as well as the distinctive vocal practice of toasting and the starring role performed by the bass in this new musical form. Tim and Jeremy also talk about why the innovations of Dub took place in Jamaica, the importance of addition and subtraction to the dub producers, and the persistent dialectic between seriousness and playfulness out of which so much Dub emerges. In this spirit, we also hope you enjoy the special LITM theme music version. Back in a fortnight with more - stay dubwise. Tim Lawrence and Jeremy Gilbert are authors, academics, DJs and audiophile dance party organisers. They've been friends and collaborators since 1997, teaching together and running parties since 2003. With clubs closed and half their jobs lost to university cuts, they're inevitably launching a podcast. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down!
