In today's world, where anti-aging products and longevity hacks are all the rage, the idea of radically extending human life has caught some serious momentum. You've probably heard it before—predictions about living to 150, maybe even 200. But a recent study published in Nature Aging on October 7, 2024, throws a cold splash of reality on this idea. Titled Implausibility of Radical Life Extension in Humans in the Twenty-First Century, this research suggests we may be approaching a natural limit to how long humans can actually live.

David Owen has spent the last 60 years at the heart of British politics. After becoming a Labour MP in 1966 and serving as foreign secretary under Jim Callaghan from 1977-1979, he became disillusioned with the direction of the increasingly Left-wing Labour Party. Owen co-founded the Social Democratic Party and went on to lead it twice. In the 1990s, he was an EU peace negotiator in the former Yugoslavia and co-authored the consequential Vance-Owen Peace Plan. He joined UnHerd's Freddie Sayers live at the UnHerd Club, to talk about his life in politics, the ideological shifts of the recent decades and the future of the British Left. Hosted on Acast. Nowadays, just leading a quiet and peaceful life of serving the Lord, is radical. If we want to live such a life, we need a Biblical view of citizenship and government. In the vicious politics of today, the party system would have us believe that one man or woman is the answer to all problems. …

In a world where scientific advancements are pushing the boundaries of what's possible, the quest for radical life extension has emerged as a forefront of innovation. Spearheading this exploration is Marek Piotrowski, whose visionary insights shed light on the transformative potential of extending human lifespan beyond conventional limits. Through the "Beyond Time" project, Piotrowski delves into the realms of cellular reprogramming, technological augmentation, and the profound impact of AI on longevity. Programming Lifespan Piotrowski introduces the concept of programming human lifespan, emphasizing the crucial roles played by mental conditioning and epigenetic factors. By exploring avenues like spiritual practices and genetic therapies, he suggests that reprogramming cells could rejuvenate and extend human lifespan significantly. Drawing parallels between the exponential growth of AI and the potential for radical life extension, Piotrowski reflects on how technological advancements could revolutionize longevity research. With AI's capacity for processing vast amounts of data and optimizing complex systems, the integration of technology promises unprecedented breakthroughs in extending human life. External Influences and Possibilities Beyond terrestrial boundaries, Piotrowski speculates on the influence of external forces like extraterrestrial civilizations on human longevity. This speculative yet intriguing notion opens up a realm of possibilities, highlighting the boundless nature of exploration in the quest for radical life extension. Despite the promising advancements, Piotrowski stresses the importance of accessibility and democratization of longevity technologies. By advocating for the prioritization of longevity basics such as exercise, nutrition, and preventive healthcare, he aims to make life-extending interventions accessible to all, not just the privileged few. Piotrowski's insights are further reinforced by the global landscape of longevity research. Stem cell therapies, a cornerstone of such research, vary in accessibility across regions due to regulatory differences and technological advancements. However, hubs like California, New York, and Boston, alongside emerging centers in Singapore, foster collaboration among top scientists, supported by government initiatives. Embracing Lifestyle Optimization Beyond technological interventions, Piotrowski underscores the significance of lifestyle optimization in promoting longevity. Prioritizing health over convenience, maintaining proper sleep hygiene, and adopting practices like cold exposure therapy and continuous glucose monitoring are pivotal in enhancing lifespan and well-being. Marek Piotrowski's "Beyond Time" project Alongside his son Alex, offers a captivating glimpse into the future of radical life extension. By intertwining scientific exploration with visionary foresight, Piotrowski inspires a collective journey towards unlocking the mysteries of human longevity, inviting us to transcend the confines of time and embrace a future where age is no longer a barrier to vitality and fulfillment. What is mental illness and does it really exist? What is radical psychotherapy and what is behind depression? Can (and should() we give advice about life to each other? What is evil? Where do school shootings come from and what are the psychological dynamics behind them? We tackle questions like that with Andrew Feldmar, a radical psychotherapist. Feldmár (Feldmár András; born 28 October 1940, in Budapest) is a Hungarian born psychotherapist living in Canada. He is most known as the Hungarian follower of R. D. Laing, the Scottish psychiatrist who was one of the leading figures of the counterculture of the 1960s. Laing, who later became his friend, was his teacher and therapist first. Following his mentor, Feldmár practices and popularizes a form of radical psychotherapy, where the main goal of the therapist is to engage in a real, spontaneous and honest relationship with the patient. This approach is based on the findings of research on interpersonal phenomenology, spiritual emergency, the anthropology of healing, existential psychotherapy and community therapy. Feldmár rejects the labelling of human suffering, and therefore distances himself from the mainstream forms of psychiatry and psychotherapy which are based on the concept of mental illness. He has published many books in Hungarian, he lectures, teaches, provides supervision and therapy internationally, he has worked as a psychotherapist with over 52 years of experience, having spent more than 100,000 hours in psychotherapy with clients. He has been noticeably successful treating psychotic patients. He is a well-known expert in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy.

Today I'm chatting with my friend Lachlan Beaton, a mental health professional who decided to make a series of radical life changes to live the life he always wanted. The journey to where he is now wasn't linear. It didn't all happen at once. It took years and years. And a lot of hard work. His story is so inspiring, and it shows that it's never too late to take a new path. He shows us that you can have a radical change in outlook, and step by step, you can move towards a life that feels more aligned with your values. Anything is possible: he changed careers in his 40s, he sold his house and downsized, he works part-time, he stopped drinking and got into fitness, he lives part-time in Thailand AND he's having fun dating. If you feel like the status quo isn't for you, you NEED to listen to Lachlan's story. In conversation with Imani Perry Ilyon Woo is the author of The Great Divorce, the ''lively, well-written, and engrossing tale'' (The New York Times Book Review) of a young mother's five-year fight against her husband, the Shakers religious sect, and the norms of 19th century United States for her and her children's freedom. The recipient of a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Writing Grant and of fellowships from the American Antiquarian Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Woo has contributed writing to The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe. Imani Perry won the 2022 National Book Award for nonfiction for South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation. Her other books include, Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation, Breathe: A Letter to My Sons, and Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry. Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies and faculty associate in the Program in Law and Public Affairs and Gender and Sexuality Studies at Princeton University. Lorraine Hansberry was one of the most brilliant — and radical —playwrights of the mid-20th century. The author of the wildly popular "A Raisin in the Sun," Hansberry was both the youngest and the first Black winner of the prestigious Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play in 1959. She's the subject of the acclaimed biography Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry by Princeton scholar Imani Perry. This conversation originally aired on May 12, 2019.
Legendary film curator Larry Kardish makes his first appearance on Filmwax to discuss the upcoming FilmColumbia festival that he co-founded. Also, the award-winning documentary filmmaker Rick Stern returns with a new film called "A Radical Life" which is currently streaming on Discovery+.
If we want to understand America today, we must first understand the South. This is both a central premise of Imani Perry's latest book, South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, which is a finalist for the 2022 National Book Award for Nonfiction, and a proposition she explores in depth in this episode of Book Dreams. During her conversation with Eve and Julie, Imani illuminates the connections between Southern history and pivotal aspects of contemporary American society–everything from the overturning of Roe v. Wade, to episodes of mass violence, to the treatment of immigrants at the border. She also makes the case that the South could have a better claim to the name “Heartland of America” than the Midwest, because “the way Americans relate to the use of land and labor is so shaped by the South.” Imani vividly conveys, too, a duality that has pervaded the South over the course of its history, particularly for those oppressed there: on the one hand, grief, pain, and atrocity; on the other, joy, vibrancy, and beauty. “I spent a lot of time,” she says, “thinking about how much the violence of the country was associated with sources of pleasure: … slavery, and rum and tobacco and sugar. … Then there's also the fact of people who have lived incredibly hardscrabble lives, through dispossession and also, you know, the South has been home to the deepest poverty and many forms of exploitation. And from that people have tapped into their humanity to create incredible beauty and meaning.” A professor who has taught both history and law, Imani also explains why the Supreme Court's recent tethering of the constitution to the “intent of the founding fathers” is both bad history and bad law. Imani Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and a faculty associate with the Programs in Law and Public Affairs, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Jazz Studies. Her prior books include Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry, which won the 2019 Bograd Weld Award for Biography from the PEN America Foundation and the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Non-Fiction and was a New York Times notable book, among other accolades. She's also the author of Breathe: A Letter to My Sons, a Kirkus best nonfiction book of 2019 and a finalist for the NAACP Image Award in Nonfiction; Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation; and May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem, also a finalist for the NAACP Image Award in Nonfiction. Imani Perry introduces us to A Raisin in the Sun, the first show ever staged on Broadway written by a black woman – and the show's legendary playwright, Lorraine Hansberry. In Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry, author Imani Perry pays tribute to one of the most pivotal Black playwrights in modern history. In Perry's 2018 biography of Lorraine Hansberry, we meet a talented writer whose mainstream success with A Raisin In The Sun often overshadows her strategic and radical work as an artist and progressive thinker. That renowned play has returned to The Public Theater and Imani Perry joins host Kai Wright to explore how Hansberry and the story of the Younger family shaped the landscape of theater. Companion listening for this episode: Lynn Nottage: Unexpected Optimist (1/3/2022) Playwright Lynn Nottage breaks down her remarkable career and shares how, as an optimist at heart, she finds the light and resilience in unexpected stories. “Notes from America” airs live on Sunday evenings at 6pm ET. Inventing Secularism: The Radical Life of George Jacob Holyoake (McFarland, 2021), by Ray Argyle is the first modern biography of the founder of Secularism, describing a transformative figure whose controversial and conflict-filled life helped shape the modern world. Jailed for atheism and disowned by his family, Holyoake came out of an English prison at the age of 25 determined to bring an end to religion's control over daily life. Ever on the front lines of social reform, Holyoake has been hailed for having won “the freedoms we take for granted today.” With Secularism again under siege, Argyle argues that Holyoake's vision of a “virtuous society” rings today with renewed clarity. Ray Argyle is the author of eleven books, including five biographies, three political histories, a memoir, and a novel of Victorian Canada. He's worked as a journalist, a publishing executive, and a communications consultant, with articles appearing in Canada's major newspapers, as well as magazines such as Reader's Digest, France Today, and World War II History. Having grown up in British Columbia, he is now based in Canada's province of Ontario.
