Today in 2013, the US Supreme Court issued a ruling that put an end to something called the National Raisin Reserve. Here's why the US used to have a massive government stockpile of raisins. In 1937, an 8-year-old Lorraine Hansberry narrowly dodged a brick thrown through her family's Chicago home by a white mob. Their crime? Moving into a “whites-only” neighborhood. This trauma—and her father Carl Hansberry's landmark Supreme Court case (Hansberry v. Lee)—would fuel her masterpiece, A Raisin in the Sun the first Broadway play by a Black woman . The Hansberrys' battle mirrored the Younger family's in Raisin both defied racist housing covenants that confined Black families to overcrowded, overpriced slums. Though Carl won his case on a technicality (the covenant lacked enough signatures), the ruling didn't end segregation—just as the Youngers' victory over Clybourne Park's buyout offer couldn't erase systemic racism . Hansberry's genius was turning her family's story into art that exposed Northern liberalism's hypocrisy. As she wrote, Raisin wasn't just about “buying a house” but “the ghetto's violence, deferred dreams, and the cost of dignity” . Tune in to explore how housing discrimination shaped Hansberry's radical vision—and why her fight still resonates today. #ARaisinInTheSun #HousingJustice #BlackHistory"

Debbie Solaris is an ET contactee, interdimensional traveler, and galactic historian. A few years ago, after a fateful extraterrestrial contact experience, Debbie awakened to her true star lineage and higher calling. Through her ancestral connection with the Akashic Records, she has been receiving downloads of galactic historical information and universal spiritual knowledge ever since. She feels it's a significant part of her mission here on Earth to help awaken others to their own true Divine selves and cosmic origins. Debbie stumbled upon the metaphysical scene "almost by accident," as she describes it, and calls herself a “real late bloomer” on the spiritual path. She had a conventional and conservative Roman Catholic upbringing in a military family where “aliens and UFOs were just never discussed,” and what mattered was the material world we inhabit. Although she had an ordinary childhood, she always felt ‘different' from the people around her, as she was much more sensitive and introspective than her family members. She spent her formative years traveling with her family throughout Europe and Australia, soaking up all of the history, art, and culture of each place they visited. "I was fortunate to have loving and progressive parents who wanted us to experience the world and everything it had to offer." After spending several years on active duty in the military, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Science, and working in the environmental field as a civilian, Debbie met her life partner, Terry, who was (and still is) a UFO enthusiast and introduced her to the world of extraterrestrials and the paranormal. “Even then, I was pretty skeptical,” she recalls. Although Terry has had a lifelong curiosity and fascination with aliens and UFOs, they didn't seem real to her, especially as a scientist and environmentalist. Debbie currently lives in Castle Rock, Colorado, with her significant other Terry. Sadly, her Sphynx cat Piglet, Debbie's registered therapy cat, loved by many fans on social media, passed away on Nov. 15, 2017 (see the "Piglet" pages on this site). Debbie now shares her home with Raisin, an older rescue kitty who is a Donskoy, a Russian hairless breed. Unlocking Humanity with Host John Edmonds Kozma Hosted on Acast. Holy Beatles Discovery! Two 1963 concerts, in arguably made up British towns, have surfaced! They capture the early days of British Beatlemania (#BillyJoel) and are a revelatory addition to the Beatle live catalog. One can only hope Calderstone/UMe releases it in a souped up vinyl version, with an Apple and on Capitol's 1988 purple label, for only $75! #ThrowInADamnGnome #AndAnXDRChime As if we needed any more proof that the fabs were on top of their game well before they hit the U.S. (angry Chicago guy: "How come Tony & T.J. hate A Murica so bad? And how come I'm wet again, in my no-fun places?"), these raw and rare recordings reiterate the unmatched power of the early live Beatles. A newly, virtually, reunited Gab Two discuss this and more, and ask the questions only the censored, silenced media on Fox, Newsmax, Breitbart, countless podcasts, and Sinclair's local news affiliates are brave/high enough to ask, like:
Last week, the Senate Armed Services Committee held a confirmation hearing for the man President Trump has selected to be the Nation's top military officer: Lieutenant General John Caine. This warrior's replacement of Joe Biden's Joint Chiefs Chairman, General C.Q. Brown, couldn't be more welcome – or needed. General Caine, known by his Air Force pilot's call sign “Raizin,” was not only selected over myriad active duty four-star officers. He was also pulled out of retirement to take on this key job at a particularly fraught moment. In contrast to the previous chairman, he has focused on war-fighting, rather than promoting divisive, cultural Marxist “Woke” agendas. The Trump team of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman Raizin Caine promises to provide the reboot of our military we urgently need. Let us pray they have time to reestablish the practice of “peace through strength.” This is Frank Gaffney.

In this episode of the AgNet News Hour, hosts Lorrie Boyer and Nick Papagni discussed the raisin industry with Caleb Barcarian, dubbed "Mr. Raisin." Barcarian shared his 56-year career, noting the industry's decline from 280,000 acres to 90,000 acres due to high land costs and shifts to almonds and pistachios. He predicted five major processors remaining, with 200 growers. Turkey is the top raisin producer, followed by Iran and China. Barcarian highlighted the industry's consolidation and the need for vertical integration. He also mentioned the raisin industry's shift from traditional drying methods to more efficient, automated systems. The segment concluded with a discussion on the raisin industry's future and its efforts to innovate and stay competitive. This segment features an interview brought to you by the Almond Board of California. The segment discussed the impact of recent storms on California almond orchards, highlighting various types of damage, such as wind, rain, hail, and frost. Michael Roots emphasized the importance of growers reporting damage to their local Ag Commissioner within 30 days for potential disaster relief funds. Despite growers being vigilant about crop insurance, they often overlook reporting to the Ag Commissioner. The conversation also touched on the broader implications of tariffs on US exports, particularly almonds, and the strategy behind current economic policies. The segment concluded with optimism about the almond crop and a brief mention of geopolitical developments involving Ukraine. The discussion on Ag Net News Hour covered the introduction of Accu-Label, a biodegradable paper label for produce, highlighting sustainability. The label used by Windset Farms features a ladybug, symbolizing sustainable growing. The segment then shifted to the Salton Sea's accelerated shoreline retreat due to water management changes, posing health risks from polluted dust. Between 2002 and 2017, the retreat rate increased from 12.5 to 38.5 meters annually. By 2030, the north shore could recede by 150 meters, and by 2041, by 172 meters. The conversation also touched on the potential use of drones in agriculture for security and monitoring.

On this day in 1959, “A Raisin in the Sun” debuted on Broadway, making history as the first play produced by a Black woman, Lorraine Hansberry. Starring Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil, the play was inspired by Langston Hughes' poem "Harlem ('A Dream Deferred')" and depicted a struggling Black family in Chicago's Washington Park neighborhood. Originally titled “The Crystal Stair,” it was Hansberry's first play after leaving her writing job. Despite being a debut work, it ran for 530 performances and was widely acclaimed. Hansberry became the first Black playwright and the youngest American to win a New York Critics' Circle Award, cementing her legacy as a groundbreaking voice in American theater. Arnetia Walker has lit up stages and screens for decades and she joins us this week to review her stunning show biz resume, including her latest entry, Bookie, the Chuck Lorre Max comedy on which she is currently slaying as Grandma. We are also joined by artist and Holocaust Survivor Erika Kahn, a first-hand witness to the consequences of authoritarian rule, scapegoating, and nationally sanctioned brutality. Erika offers vital insight for us in our fight against a dangerous wave of fascism.Orphaned as a child, Arnetia Walker's showbiz career began at New York City's High School for the Performing Arts where her talent and dreams were nurtured and encouraged. Arnetia was embraced by a similar culture of community and support when she won her first Broadway role with Hal Linden in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window and then A Raisin in the Sun. Both Lorraine Hansberry's plays. With a favorable alignment of the stars and talent recognition from Michael Bennet, Arnetia went from understudying Stephanie Mills in The Wiz to co-starring in Dreamgirls… a show within which she ultimately played every starring character. (But not on the same night.) As gifted an actor as she is a singer, Arnetia talks about her slew of TV appearances, including her lead role in the Witt Thomas Harris sitcom, Nurses and the circumstances under which that part prevented her from being cast in E.R.Currently, she is stealing every scene as the ruthlessly direct Grandma in Bookie. Arnetia shares what it's like to work with Chuck Lorre and Sebastian Maniscalco. She tells us about her cabaret era and her passion for cooking and she boldly takes on a round of IMDB Roulette that jars some treasured TV memories! Then, Centenarian Erika Kahn recalls her childhood in Nazi Germany, and she contrasts and compares the climate which led to the Nazi atrocities with that of our current perilous pivot point in America. Erika is a tenacious activist whose words of hope and optimism are essential for those of us taking on the rise of American fascism. In recommendations --Fritz: Netflix Series 'American Manhunt: OJ Simpson'Weezy: The Movie 'Studio One Forever' (2023), streaming on several platforms Path Points of Interest:Arnetia WalkerArnetia Walker on IMDBArnetia Walker on WikipediaArnetia Walker on TiktokBookieErika KahnWe Played Marbles: Remembering A Stolen ChildhoodA documentary featuring Erika KahnAmerican Manhunt: O.J. “A Raisin in the Sun” is a Chicago classic. The play by Lorainne Hansberry tells the story of a Black family looking to move out of a cramped South Side apartment and defy social and political limits to realize their dreams. There would be no “A Raisin in the Sun” without Lorraine's father Carl Hansberry, a real estate broker turned civil rights activist who helped end restrictive covenant laws that prevent certain people from buying and living on a property. Reset learns more about Carl Hansberry with Gabrielle Randle-Bent, dramaturg, University of Chicago professor and associate artistic director at the Court Theatre. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.

Episode 092: A Raisin in the Sun by Lorainne Hansberry Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Tinuke Craig Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. When Lorraine Hansberry's play A Raisin in the Sun opened in New York in 1959, its author became the first African-American woman to have a play on Broadway, and this with her debut at age of 29. The play was ground-breaking for its realist portait of a black working-class family, spotlighting their personal dreams and the public prejudice they confront. We recorded this episode shortly after an acclaimed new production of the play completed its run at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London, and I am delighted to talk with the production's director, Tinuke Craig, about this landmark play.
