Frederike Brockhoven sits down with Rania Ayman of Entreprenelle, Yasmeen Mjalli of Babyfist, and Lina Khalifeh of Shefighter to discuss female entrepreneurship in the Middle East.
We all know the stats. Women make up more than half of the population around the world, and yet are dramatically underrepresented in government, in business, and in leadership positions. But we also know that when women lead, amazing things happen. This week, we feature several of those leaders who work with Vital Voices. This amazing organization invests in women leaders in every corner of the globe, and the work they do is changing the world. In this extended episode, we hear from Alyse Nelson, the President of Vital Voices. Lina Kalifeh, founder of the SheFighter self defense for women, Esra’a al-Shafei, a Bahraini activist fighting for LGBTQ rights in the Middle East and North Africa, and Kah Walla, the first woman to run for president in Cameroon. Each of these women have stories of power and pain, and I hope you listen well. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message
Coach Lina Khalifeh is a martial arts practitioner and instructor of Taekwondo. She is a champion, trainer and founder of SheFighter, a self-defense school for women. Why are women so afraid to stand and defend for themselves? That's how I started. I started teaching self-defense training at the basement of my parent's house. That's how I shifted from taekwondo to creating my own system. Coach Lina Khalifeh - Episode 476 Addiction is not the most pleasant word to use but Coach Lina Khalifeh is on the good side. As a young child at age 5, Coach Khalifeh is already addicted to discipline, focus, values, and commitment as she goes to train 3x in a week in taekwondo. Presently, Coach Lina Khalifeh has a new addiction, helping women all over the world on how to defend themselves effectively. She founded SheFighter to become an internationally-known organization dedicated to increasing safety and self-image. Born and raised in Jordan, Coach Khalifeh is now based in Canada. Lina Khalifeh has overcome significant barriers and obstacles in both her athletic and personal life (being bullied as a child to Olympic training injuries), has grown a worldwide company and an empowerment movement with SheFighter and has been officially recognized for her work by President Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, ESPN and the World Economic Forum. She does all of this while being an incredibly humble, thoughtful and engaging individual. Lina's enterprise, SheFighter, is the first Self-Defense studio for women-only started in the Middle East and expanded to more than 35 countries around the world. SheFighter is designed to empower women physically, mentally and emotionally through Self-Defense training. SheFighter has been working to achieve gender equality through spreading awareness among students in schools and focusing on building their physical intelligence through sports, Martial Arts and Self-Defense. Founded in 2012, the studio has now trained more than 18,000 women all over the globe and features a team of all-female trainers. Lina is a celebrated speaker who has engaged with audiences across the world. She has presented and been on panels at events such as TEDx and the World Economic Forum.
At least one in three women worldwide will experience some form of violence during their lifetime, according to the World Health Organization. The toll of gender-based violence has long been hidden from society, as victims suffer alone out of stigma. Yet, courageous women across the globe are breaking this code of silence. From self-defense classes in Jordan to using film to educate and change culturally harmful practices in Pakistan, women-led initiatives are empowering victims to stand up, speak out, and fight back. Working outside of the media spotlight, and confronting powerful cultural taboos, their task is monumental, but these activists and entrepreneurs are the vanguard of a global movement to call #timesup on the scourge of gender-based violence. Featuring: Lina Khalifeh, Founder of SheFighter, Vital Voices Fellow; Samar Minallah Khan, Founder and Director, Ethnomedia;Alyse Nelson, President and CEO, Vital Voices. Moderated by Niamh King, Vice President, Programs and Strategic Content, Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
Lina Khalifeh has more than 17 years experience practicing martial arts like Taekwondo, Kick-boxing, Kung Fu & Boxing. She is a 3Dan black belt in Taekwondo and has represented Jordan in many international tournaments. Appalled by violence against women, especially domestic violence, Lina decided to train women in self-defense. She started in her parents' basement, and in 2012 set up her first SheFighter training studio, the Middle East's first self-defense studio to empower women both mentally and physically. Lina is also an international businesswoman and is growing the SheFighter brand globally. In this episode we discussed how training can make women more confident and better able to defend themselves against violence. Reaction time is critical! Lina also mentioned a couple of specific things to do when faced with an attacker: target the throat or groin. If you want people to help you catch a fleeing culprit, shout "He's a thief!” It was interesting but not surprising to learn that gender discrimination and sexual harassment exist in the word of martial arts - we talked about speaking up "even if your voice is shaking". We covered the online abuse that Lina and SheFighter are receiving from the patriarchy due to the powerful social impact of her work, and how to react to that bullying. We also talked about her personal ability to switch off from the daily intensity - as an introvert, she prefers to recharge alone through individual sports like swimming or running. One must point out that self-defense training is relevant to men as well as women, boys as well as girls. If you would like to get in touch with Lina or learn more about her work, please visit www.shefighter.com or find her on Instagram @shefighter. A huge thank you to Naseba and the WIL Economic Forum for making this interview possible.
