This week on the Marathon Running Podcast, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of high-mileage training with a true expert in the field: Hugo van der Broeck (who is on instagram as @run_coach_hugo) shares a unique lens through which to examine the complexities of running significant weekly mileage. In this episode, we leave no stone unturned, starting with a clear understanding of what "high mileage" means for the average runner striving to balance training with the demands of daily life. We delve into the critical importance of injury prevention, discussing common ailments like knee problems, shin splints, and Achilles tendinitis, and how to mitigate these risks while increasing volume. Hugo expertly explains the primary physiological adaptations that occur with consistent high mileage, including a reduction in resting heart rate, an increase in the production of mitochondria and capillaries, and enhanced ATP synthesis. We also discuss the often-overlooked role of strength training, the strategic implementation of mileage increases, the potential benefits and drawbacks of double run days (including the PGC-1alpha connection and immune system considerations), and Hugo's holistic approach to preventing overtraining through sleep, nutrition, nature, and support. As a bonus, we even tackle the intriguing topic of fasted running and its appropriate application in your training. Prepare for an in-depth and incredibly informative conversation that will equip you with the knowledge to approach high-mileage training with confidence and intelligence. We are now on YOUTUBE:Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast Discount Codes for Runners: https://www.runswag.com· Our website: www.marathonrunningpodcast.com · Our Instagram: @runningpodcast· Our Amazon Storefront: Amazon Storefront· Join our Facebook group: SpeedStriders Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/speedstriders · Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast

The Distance Switch: Unlock Marathon Speed by Racing ShorterOur guest: @ericaweitzrunsIn this episode, we explore a counterintuitive but highly effective strategy for marathon runners: intentionally switching your training focus to shorter race distances after completing a marathon. We delve into why this isn't just about recovery, but a powerful way to build speed, improve efficiency, and ultimately become a stronger, more resilient marathoner in the long run. We'll discuss the physiological advantages of training for 5ks, 10ks, and half-marathons, and even touch on how trail running and track workouts can contribute to your overall running development. We are now on YOUTUBE:Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast Discount Codes for Runners: https://www.runswag.com· Our website: www.marathonrunningpodcast.com · Our Instagram: @runningpodcast· Our Amazon Storefront: Amazon Storefront· Join our Facebook group: SpeedStriders Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/speedstriders · Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@RunningPodcast
Week one of ultramarathon training is in the books—and it was a sweaty one! In this episode, we kick things off by checking in on how training is feeling so far, especially as the summer heat settles in. Then we dive into two weekend race recaps, starting with Saturday's Fighting Fentanyl 5K in Shawnee, KS—a meaningful event with a powerful cause. Sunday brought the Village Shalom Father's Day 10K, where the course was fast, but the humidity was faster. Let's just say… it wasn't my finest race performance. We close out the episode by talking about how humidity messes with your running—from elevated heart rate to that feeling of running through soup. If you struggled in this weekend's weather, you're not alone. Lace up and tune in for some honest race reflections, training talk, and weather wisdom from the back of the pack.

He completed the course in eight days, 15 hours, and 19 minutes, tying for second place with fellow racer Ulf Nore. These incredible women have mastered something that frankly boggles our minds – they record their entire podcast while actually running. That's a level of multitasking that would have Kyle gasping for air and forgetting his own name by mile two. In this episode, Gretchen and Elaine are joined by Eric Strand, a fellow runner who just conquered Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, we launch our June Mental Health Awareness Month series with the most personal episode Kyle has ever recorded. In an unfiltered, no-interview format, Kyle opens up about his 15-year journey through mental health struggles stemming from divorce, single parenting, two open-heart surgeries, and the complex layers of modern masculinity that often leave men suffering in silence. Drawing from CDC statistics showing men die by suicide four times more often than women, Kyle explores the cultural conditioning that teaches men to "man up" instead of speak up, and how phrases like "don't cry" and "handle it" create dangerous emotional isolation. Through deeply personal stories about divorce, co-parenting challenges, his heart condition, and the overwhelming pressure of carrying it all quietly, Kyle demonstrates how life's compounding stressors can break even the strongest men. But this isn't just about the struggle – it's about survival through movement. Kyle reveals how running became his lifeline when words failed, offering structure in chaos, serving as meditation in motion, and providing the one safe space where a grown man could process pain without explanation or judgment. From his work with Team Fidelis supporting veteran suicide prevention to finding community in the back-of-the-pack philosophy, this episode proves that while running doesn't fix everything, it can give you strength when you have nothing left and remind you that moving forward – no matter how slowly – is always better than standing still.

"They just want a chance to compete." Yesterday, after much anticipation and speculation, USA Track & Field announced the changes to the qualifying times for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. So, what's it going to take to OTQ leading up to LA 2028, and to get to run at the Trials? For women, the qualifying mark stays the same: 2:37:00. On the men's side, things are getting faster: Men will now need to run 2:16:00 to qualify — a full two minutes faster than the qualifying time for the 2024 Trials. In this episode, USATF's Chairs of the Long Distance Running Committee — Kim Conley and Conor Nickel — join the show to explain what what into making these decisions, and what they mean for athletes and fans alike. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we dive deep into the 52nd running of the legendary Hospital Hill Half Marathon in Kansas City, Missouri – Kyle's ninth time tackling this challenging course that's been testing runners for over five decades. From the notorious hills that give this race its name to the unique atmosphere that makes it a Kansas City tradition, we break down every aspect of this iconic event and what keeps runners coming back year after year. We then shift gears to celebrate an incredible milestone as we honor our running buddy Dan's achievement of completing his 200th half marathon – a testament to consistency, dedication, and the pure love of the 13.1-mile distance. The episode wraps up with an important discussion about the unexpected challenge Mother Nature threw at runners across the Midwest this weekend: wildfire smoke from Canada that created hazardous air quality conditions affecting everything from the Hospital Hill Half Marathon to the Fargo Marathon. We explore how these increasingly common environmental factors impact race day decisions, runner safety, and performance, providing essential information every endurance athlete needs to understand about training and racing when air quality becomes a concern. Whether you're a Hospital Hill veteran, inspired by incredible milestone achievements, or concerned about environmental impacts on running, this episode covers the full spectrum of our weekend racing reality.

This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we deliver a comprehensive update on everything happening in our running world, starting with Kyle's volunteer experience at this morning's Going the Distance 5K & 10K where he witnessed the race from the other side of the finish line. We then dive into a sobering reality check about the true physical toll of back-to-back racing, using Kyle's recent calf injury from the Fly Over Challenge as a real-world case study of how consecutive half marathons can lead to serious muscle strains or tears that sideline runners for weeks. Drawing from medical expertise and personal experience, we break down the warning signs, recovery protocols, and prevention strategies that every ambitious runner needs to understand before attempting back-to-back endurance events. We also catch up on our recent guest highlights, reflecting on the impactful conversations we've shared from Libby Davis and the Fighting Fentanyl 5K's life-saving mission, to the inspiring multi-generational spirit of Village Shalom's Father's Day races, and our groundbreaking on-location episode at Rendezvous Climbing Gym. Whether you're recovering from your own racing injury, planning future challenges, or simply want to stay connected with the diverse Kansas City running and fitness community, this episode offers honest insights, practical wisdom, and the reminder that sometimes the most important finish line is the one that gets you home healthy.

Dr. Michelle Quirk, pediatrician and running coach, sets the record straight in this episode, sharing why walk intervals are not only acceptable but beneficial for all runners. "I set this goal. I made a promise to myself that I wanted this, so I'm going to do it. And no, that's not always fun. Maybe that means a late treadmill run or whatever it may be. But those little wins against your brain — and the battle to not do something — help you on race day. Because when it gets hard, you've already practiced doing it when you don't want to, or when it hurts, or when the conditions aren't ideal, or when you're not comfortable." In 2018, Laura Galeazzo — then Anderson — came on the Ali on the Run Show to talk about getting back on the run after having her first daughter. That year, Laura returned to running with a big literal win, breaking the tape in 2:57 at the Buffalo Marathon. Now, seven years and another daughter later, Laura returns to the show to talk about smashing a goal nine years in the making. At last weekend's McKirdy Micro Marathon, Laura took down a longstanding dream of running sub-2:50, finishing the 26.2 miles in a five-minute personal best of 2:49:32. In this episode, the 23-time marathoner talks about how she has taken nearly an hour off her marathon time, about why this particular race was so significant, and about how she's built so much mental strength to get where she is today.
