Patrice is an award-winning former TODAY show producer who now runs a company helping brands and entrepreneurs tap into the power of their own stories in order to create the impact and income they want in life. Video and specifically storytelling on video is not a skill set every founder has, but it's a lethal skill to have and can be the reason smaller brands and first-time entrepreneurs can compete with more established businesses. Her NY-based video storytelling company has worked with brands such as Netflix and Lululemon to influential course creators, startups and solopreneurs. She lives in Brooklyn with her three little boys and her British husband and she is the unofficial, but really official queen in the house!  Listen to this Takin' Care of Lady Business®, Jennifer Justice speaks with Patrice Poltzer, founder and CEO of Patrice Poltzer Creative, who talks about storytelling on video for branding. She opens up about her struggles in her twenties, feeling lost and like a failure, and how she eventually landed a job at NBC. It was there that she found her niche — creating cool video content for brands despite being underqualified.   Here is what to expect on this week's show: Trusting the process and why it's okay to not have everything figured out right away.  Helping founders tell their stories and market their businesses effectively Embracing your unique experiences and use them to your advantage. Finding mentors and a strong support system can help guide you and lift you up during challenging times. Hello, and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down to a single person, think about their work and unpack the rest. This week, Natasha interviewed Kaisa Snellman, an economic sociologist and an associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Academic Director of the INSEAD Gender Initiative. We know, we know, it's a flex. We're going to talk about: Kaisa's recent Harvard Business Review piece with Isabelle Solal: For Female Founders, Fundraising Only from Female VCs Comes at a Cost. The duo's research asserts that women-led startups whose first round was raised exclusively from female VCs were 2x less likely to raise a second round regardless of initial funding round size, industry, geographic location, or prestige of the investor.Listen to the whole conversation before you jump to conclusions, but let's just say that this conversation really got into the numbers and nuance behind the headlines. The data is both revolutionary, and provocative. Here's what we got into:How people see female founders who just raise from female investors, and the pitching bias that continues to exist in the worldWhy the answer to imbalances is more complicated than getting female check-writers to the tableAnd finally, we talk about how diversity quotas and funds may have unintended consequences that are worth thinking a bit more about.Equity will be back on Friday with a familiar voice you may be missing, but you can keep up with us in the meantime on Twitter @EquityPod.For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website. Equity drops at 10:00 a.m. PT every Monday and at 7:00 a.m. PT on Wednesdays and Fridays, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotifyand all the casts. I'm joined by VC-backed startup operator, angel investor, author, and podcast host Stef Caldwell. She's a champion for not just getting women a seat at the table, but actually helping female-owned businesses build their own tables. We talk about some of the reasons why women don't pursue their big ideas, why she's so passionate about closing the gender wealth gap, and tips for how to take that first step to starting your business. Stef breaks down the different fundraising options available for entrepreneurs and what to do when you're feeling lost in a conversation where people are using industry jargon. We also touch on the rise of conscious VCs who believe in creating space for founders to be successful on their own terms and why that shift is so important.    IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: How Stef landed in the FinTech industry  Examples of how you can make every dollar you earn work for yourself The first step to opening up the conversation around fundraising and connecting with the right investors  The link between your energy and the opportunities you attract Tips for how to collect data and get started with your dream business  What to do if you want to fundraise, but don't feel like you have the network    RESOURCES Thanks to Bombas for supporting Earn Your Happy.
