Some podcast apps may not display links from our show notes properly, so we have included a list of links at the end of this description. * Historically, the field of sexuality research in the United States has not included the experiences and wisdom of racialized sexologists, educators, therapists, or professionals. Instead, sexuality professionals have been trained using a color-free narrative that does an injustice by both excluding their work as well as failing to offer a fuller examination of how they expanded the field and held it accountable. * In this episode, educator and sexologist Bianca I Laureano is joined by Founder and Executive Director of Sacramento Peers on Prevention Dr. Ericka Burns for an illuminating conversation highlighting the voices, experiences, strategies, and solutions from sexologists that have been excluded and yet have still emerged as vital contributors to the U.S. and broader North American sexuality field. Bianca shares insights from her recent collection, The People's Book of Human Sexuality, a futuristic textbook that offers a significant shift in the way we learn and understand sexuality by featuring an expansive array of past and present leaders in the field committed to liberation, healing, equity, and justice. * This episode was recorded during a live online event on June 5th, 2024. In today's episode of Good Authority, Jonathan and Gary Barker engage in a thought-provoking conversation about challenging traditional gender norms and binary labels, particularly those associated with masculinity. They share personal experiences and observations on the harmful effects of toxic masculinity and the importance of creating safe spaces for men to express emotions and open up about their struggles. They also discuss the challenges of expressing emotions and prioritizing mental health in a society that expects men to be stoic and unemotional, and the effects of social media on young people. The conversation highlights the need for ongoing support and dialogue to empower girls and boys and break down barriers that restrict their full equality, while also emphasizing the importance of self-care, empathy, and open communication in fostering a more emotionally authentic and supportive environment for men. Gary Barker, PhD, has been a global voice in engaging men and boys in advancing gender equality, gender justice and positive masculinities for three decades. He is the CEO and co-founder of Equimundo Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, a major contributor to international activism on male allyship in gender equality. Susan mentions the concept of hosting in her book “The Lost Art of Connecting”. What this means is, you don't need to be the person in charge of a space in order to host other people in it. Hosting can be a secret super power that allows you to get your grounding in a new situation, as well as a vehicle for making connections from a place of generosity. To quote Susan: “Bringing people together, you're making that magic happen and you are helping people feel seen, heard, and listened to. And I fervently believe that the greatest gift we can give one another is exactly that.” If we can understand the peoples greatest wish is to be seen and heard, and incorporate that into how we interact with them, we build much more fruitful and satisfying connections. It's extremely disarming without being manipulative.   We often think people like us because of what we say, but it turns out talking less and asking questions makes us more likeable. Use that curiosity: understanding other people's perspective grows our empathy and helps us understand both the world and ourselves a little better.   LESSON: You can't “hack” body language.   Connect with Susan:  Twitter and Instagram: @Susanmcp1 Company: www.mcsptrategies.com Book: TheLostArtofConnecting.com LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/susanmcpherson/ Susan McPherson is a serial connector, angel investor, and corporate responsibility expert. And now for something completely different with this episode on plant based eating. This is the second in a two part environmental series on thinking globally and acting locally. In the last episode, Nancy spoke with Daniel Katz of the Rainforest Alliance about the global effect of rainforest destruction on climate change and that the main cause for this destruction is cattle raising. But it's not just cattle in rainforests that are the problem. Worldwide, animal agriculture accounts for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions. That's more than the entire transportation sector combined, which clocks in at 13%. This all means that eating a plant based diet has more of an impact on climate than driving an electric car. So this episode focuses on acting locally, and I mean hyper-locally because the most powerful personal action we can take to fight climate change is changing our diet. Our guides for this exploration of plant based eating are friends and veteran vegans, artist Gayle Kabaker and Suzette Moyer, design director at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Gayle, Suzette and Nancy are all at different stages of their plant-based journeys – Gayle has been a vegan for 8 years, Suzette for two and Nancy is the newcomer since a recent diagnosis of high cholesterol.  In this preach-free zone, Gayle, Suzette and Nancy talk about tips, tricks, hacks and recipes, the vegan glow and demystifying weird-sounding ingredients. And if Gayle's name sounds familiar, it's because she appeared on earlier episode of the podcast, speaking about her work at Vital Voices to raise up women leaders around the world. So if you want to lose weight, if you want to improve your overall health, if you're just curious or if you want to change your diet to save the planet, then this episode is for you. If we've learned anything over the last few years of dealing with a global pandemic, it's our insatiable human need for connection. I'm not talking about likes on a post, or how many business cards you get to hand out at an event. I'm talking about genuine connection - connections that fuel you, inspire you, make you laugh, and spark ideas. Today, my guest Susan McPherson shares her lifelong commitment to connection in her new book The Lost Art of Connecting: The Gather, Ask, Do Method for Building Meaningful Relationships. We talk about how her parent's pre-social media methods of connecting influenced her connecting philosophy, how her Gather, Ask, Do method works for building generous and meaningful connection, how we can best revitalize our relationships in a post-pandemic world, and the role technology can play now and going forward. Key Takeaways:Having an ongoing curiosity about people is the heart of empathy and the key to connecting. It isn't about helping 50,000 people. It is about 2-3 actions per week and building them in as a habit. You will receive goodness back and people will remember your connections with them when you're being helpful. Set realistic goals and expectations for yourself and your connecting. We are all experiencing this global pandemic together, and now is the time to reach out when we are all in this strange situation together.  "We have all these technology tools, so ask the recipient, whether it's a colleague, or a friend, or a donor, or a funder, how they want to be in contact with you. To me, it's a very personal question. We all have our likes and dislikes." —  Susan McPherson About Susan McPherson:Susan McPherson + Founder and CEOSusan McPherson is a serial connector, angel investor, and corporate responsibility expert.
