Representation is more than one and done. It needs to be seen throughout an ecosystem, including at the foundation, in texts for students. There are serendipitous moments in life, particularly when two women who are equally passionate about storytelling and connection end up on a podcast together. In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, coach, consultant and host of Out of the Clouds, interviews author, advisor and your hype-woman Lisa Bragg. Lisa tells Anne her story, starting by sharing her journey from TV news reporter to launching her business, MediaFace, pioneering what we now know as content for our digital world, before offering thoughts on the challenges posed by growing up with Bragg as a last name. Anne asks Lisa about the genesis for her book, Bragging Rights, as well as how she designed the proprietary research underpinning her argument. Lisa goes on to speak about reframing bragging as purposeful self-promotion, and the importance of creating a safe environment for people to talk about their successes either at home or at work, to support personal and professional growth. While some research out there advises women not to ‘brag' or celebrate their successes because of potential backlash, Lisa challenges the concept (and the research) and suggests that it's time for us to change the culture and sister up. She also goes on to explain how exploring one's personal values can be one of many exercises (there are plenty more in her book) to explore meaningful self-promotion, highlighting that we are all the ‘CEO of our own life.' The two women also share their own experiences, clarifying that while this purposeful self-promotion exploration is important, it's often challenging. Anne admits to barely being able to name any of her successes and Lisa responds that ‘she is her book,' meaning that she too has times where she goes back into her shell, wishing to be discovered instead of doing the work of putting herself out there. Thankfully Lisa is crystal clear on her mission: to help others be seen and heard. She leaves listeners with this recommendation: Don't wait for others to give you opportunities, take them into your own hands. Before adding ‘celebrate your successes and don't tear down others for their achievements.'A powerful conversation that can help all of us reframe what we know about bragging and self-promotion. SUMMARY Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way. SHOW NOTES We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, ‘nobody likes a show off', ‘stay humble' and ‘self praise is no praise'. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time. When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and ‘tut' and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done). But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a ‘show off', in fact they're getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients. And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off. The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority, and experience Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May. In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a TV reporter and anchor for 15 years. I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to! Enjoy What you'll discover: The catalyst for Lisa to embrace ‘bragging' and why she had avoided it before. Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit? The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and ‘the range of acceptable behaviour'. Why you shouldn't market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead. The myths around bragging that could be holding you back. Why finding a partner can help you with promotion. The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging. “By trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one,” writes Lisa Bragg. “Instead of broadcasting, think of narrowcasting.” The clue to today's conversation is in her name, an idea she grew up grappling with: to brag (or not). “Hidden gems” are often told to work in the background or “be so great they can't ignore you.” But the world is just too noisy for that now. Lisa is sharing how we can “shimmer with pride” gracefully, without veering into obnoxious braggadociousness (yes, I just made that word up). More About Lisa: Living with the name Bragg, Lisa has had to master the art and science of self promotion. She's seen when being too humble has cost international deals and when bragging right has unlocked opportunities leading to untold fortunes. Lisa helps high-achievers of all sorts to be seen, heard and share their value with the world. Her book, Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self Promotion, launched in May.

Delegation is a critical leadership skill, yet it's one that many leaders struggle to master. The truth of the matter is, there are some managers that don't manage, and there are plenty of leaders that don't lead. Instead, these ‘sudo' leaders and managers try to do everything themselves by working a little longer, harder and faster than they did prior to getting their last promotion. But this approach never works because there will always be too many tasks and not enough time. In contrast, Leaders and managers who delegate have more time to focus on high-impact tasks, thereby maximizing their own effectiveness. And assigning work to staff members also increases the output and value of the entire team, as it allows concurrent activity. You're about to hear from six highly successful leaders who have all previously appeared on the show, sharing their first-hand, hard-won tips for effective delegation: You will hear from: Sophie Hooper, CEO and Founder of Secret Saviours Rob Moore, property investor, businessman, author, speaker and pilot Craig Moody, Managing Partner at the Verdis Group Luke Doherty, Managing Director at Mindful Peak Performance Garik Tate, AI Futurist, Serial Entrepreneur, and Product Development Coach Lisa Bragg, Founder and CEO of MediaFace and author Delegation Mastery: https://benmortonleadership.thinkific.com/courses/delegation-mastery Links to full episodes mentioned in this episode: Leading from Within: Nurturing Success and Kindness with Sophie Hooper: https://www.ben-morton.com/leading-from-within-nurturing-success-and-kindness-with-sophie-hooper/ Mastering Risk and Leadership with Rob Moore: https://www.ben-morton.com/mastering-risk-and-leadership-with-rob-moore/ Fostering an Environment of Healthy Challenge with Craig Moody: https://www.ben-morton.com/fostering-an-environment-of-healthy-challenge-with-craig-moody/ Mindfulness Unleashed: Transforming Performance and Leadership with Luke Doherty: https://www.alive-projects.com/ben-morton-5/podcast/mindfulness-unleashed-transforming-performance-and-leadership-with-luke-doherty/ The AI Revolution: Insights and Perspectives with Garik Tate: https://www.ben-morton.com/the-ai-revolution-insights-and-perspectives-with-garik-tate/ Purposeful Self-Promotion with Lisa Bragg: https://www.ben-morton.com/purposeful-self-promotion-with-lisa-bragg/
How do you feel about the word ‘bragging'? Does it make you squirm and immediately want to bolt away from the spotlight – or excited about an opportunity to share your success? When a colleague, friend or co-worker starts to say things that sound like bragging - does it rub you up the wrong way? Or do you start feeling inspired and curious about how you could get similar results? My guest today thinks we all need to become better braggers. Which as someone who started life as a good British girl, raised to avoid phrases like ‘Too big for your boots' and the cardinal sin of life becoming ‘Full of yourself'. Had me beginning this conversation already in a full body sweat.Today's Guest Lisa Bragg is an author, speaker and advisor helping people self-promote in a more authentic and un-obnoxious way. She is the founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm and author of: ‘Bragging Rights; How To Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion'. A book that digs into the art of bragging and reveals that people really DO want to hear about our success. That actually, when we share our wins and achievements, not only does it raise the bar on what's possible for the people around us – it creates a field that immediately starts to attract even greater levels of success and opportunity. That's if we know how to do it right.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisabraggInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatlisabraggFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/ThatLisaBragg/ You'll LearnWhy (unlike the high school sports team) we need to learn to pick ourselves - rather than sitting on the sidelines waiting to be picked. How to move from awkward ‘self promotion' to authentic ‘purposeful promotion' - and the right questions to ask to unpack exactly what to say.The power of focusing on what makes you ‘remarkable' i.e. literally worth ‘remarking' upon. Including the key questions to help you realize exactly how remarkable you are. The powerful equation of ‘Fear + 10%'. I love this, basically when you face something or someone that makes you want to back down, how to lean in just a little bit further. Finally, why our perceptions of words like ‘bragging' and self-promotion – even down to the language we use - rob us of way too many brilliant people and ideas at a time when we need them the most.References and links mentionedMy new ebook The Influencer CodeLisa is offering listeners exclusive access to download: Bragging Rights Riff Tool: idea and content generation. Belonging, it's a significant key to a thriving workplace. But, for it to take hold, we all need to be bold. In this episode of Bold(h)er, Dr. Rumeet Billan talks to Lisa Bragg about what belonging truly means, why we all need to understand intersectionality and how those labels that we all so quickly put on each other are a trap to genuinely getting to know someone and helping them to thrive.
It can be subtle as a whispered comment or overt, such as hiring discrimination, but ageism is in our workplaces. It is one that will happen to all of us unless we start to understand the problem, challenges and opportunities. On Bold(h)er, Lisa Bragg finds out about age discrimination from ‘Age Provocateur' Helen Hirsh Spence.

Learn more about Lisa Bragg and her services at https://www.lisabragg.com/ ------------- Excerpts from this conversation with Lisa Bragg: Delighted to be talking with you today, in particular about your book Bragging Rights. Partly because bragging when I was a kid, it was a bad word, George, it's such a taboo topic. It really is. And that's why I really want us to start talking about it. Because, you know, we are products of where we've come from. So a lot of us, you know, our parents, it's the factory era. So they were taught to put your head down, do good work, and eventually someone will notice you. They've passed that on to us. But it's comes from the factory era where we were cogs in a machine. Before that, we wanted to just get a steady paycheck. But now I'm going to just quickly Fast Forward us. We're now in the information and imagination era. And we all know we compete and collaborate globally. So we need to shift the mindset of what bragging and self promotion is to what it really needs to be. And I'll get out right off the top for our audience and for everyone. Bragging means to talk about your success with pride. And pride means self love, and I believe we all need more of that self love. But we get it confused with self aggrandizement. I think it's because self aggrandizement is one of those mouthful words. It's a big word. So and that means that's the puffery that that achiness that we think is bragging, that's the oh, I'm better than you kind of attitude, which is not bragging, bragging is really talking about your success. ------ Talk from a scar, not a wound, when you're telling your stories, it shouldn't be something that you're writing right now and emotionally draining to you. ----- ----more---- Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in executive communication skills. I'm joined by Lisa Bragg who has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book, ‘Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion', was released in May 2023 and I have a copy to give away as part of a free prize draw. Lisa is a speaker, advisor and professional mentor. She is also the founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm and before that, she was a TV reporter and anchor for 15 years. In this episode we talk about how the meaning of the word ‘brag' has completely changed over the years, to become what is described as ‘something a bit icky'. We dig into why it can be so dangerous to completely turn our back on self-promotion as a leader, for us, and for our teams. And alongside that we dispel a few myths such as “my work speaks for itself” and “the cream always rises to the top”... because a few other things rise to the top… or float to the surface! There's a good chance that no matter how great you are at what you do, you're likely to be overlooked if you don't speak up on your own behalf. Has it ever bothered you that someone else less qualified, less impactful, or even less sincere got attention that you think you deserve? In today's episode, I speak with Lisa Bragg about her new book, Bragging Rights. Being too humble can cost you opportunities; tune in to learn how to promote yourself effectively and grow your business! Lisa Bragg has literally written the book on how to talk about success.
