The World of Cloud Services with Jonathan LaCour

CTO Studio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2019 72:21

There’s a lot happening in the world of cloud services today and Jonathan LaCour of Mission is here to tell us all about it. Jonathan is CTO of Mission, a managed cloud consulting service based in Los Angeles. On today’s episode of CTO Studio, Jonathan and I talk about all the issues related to cloud and cloud migration and owning your own data. Be sure to listen in to this fascinating conversation on today's CTO Studio.  In this episode, you’ll hear: Why doesn't it work to just throw people at a problem? Why the CTO and the product team ultimately have the same goal. What is the most difficult thing for most technologists? What is the #1 most important value a CTO can hold? What do people ultimately value? And so much more! Mission helped sponsor our first CTO conference, the same conference at which Jonathan gave a talk. So it's fitting to actually we recorded this show from Mission’s headquarters with Jonathan. We start off by talking about Jonathan's journey, how he became the CTO at Mission and what they do there. Jonathan got into computing young, his dad was a Presybterian minister and also an engineer who went to Georgia Tech. His dad even worked on the space program, and has always been a technical kind of guy. In fact, Jonathan's dad would bring home his portable computer when Jonathan was little. This computer was a Mac Plus with a handle on it! And that's where Jonathan started to code: on that little Mac Plus. He started with HyperCard and Pascal and eventually C, etc. In high school he began writing code professionally and started working at an enterprise healthcare business. He went through a few acquisitions with them, including when they were bought by an enterprise document management business so he was heavily into enterprise in its early days. From there he did a hard right into startups and went into business with his sister and brother-in-law. They created a type of SaaS application in the photography space called ShootQ. They built out a cloud native app (back in the very early days of cloud) and grew ShootQ to become an industry standard, after which they sold it to a company in LA. Which is how Jonathan met Simon Anderson (the CEO of Mission). Simon was the CMO of the company who bought ShootQ before he became the CEO of DreamHost. Jonathan and his family moved from Atlanta to LA so he could take a role with DreamHost. He had 5 different titles in 7 years with them. In those 7 years he did a lot of different things including building out cloud infrastructure, engineering management, etc. When Simon became an entrepreneur-in-residence at a private equity firm out of Boston they worked together on a thesis for the managed cloud space, which is how they both ended up at Mission. Also on today's CTO Studio, he tells us why the firm chose Mission (formerly Reliam), how they expanded to a company of 100 people today over the course of a year and what they do at Mission presently. Honing in on that kind of growth in such a short period of time, I asked Jonathan to talk more about how his team has changed and evolved as it has grown. He explains that because they are a business that does a lot of professional services and consulting a lot of Mission's technical resources work on a team other than his team. His team represents the glue that holds things together. When he started it was just him so over time he has been pulling in people who are the best fit for what they are doing. I also asked him how to decide which cloud (or clouds) to be in and he says it is about picking the best tool for the job. It's like any other exploration a CTO will undertake so the way he helps people understand the hyperscale cloud providers is simple: ultimately you are looking for someone who is going to provide you with as many shortcuts as possible to get to market. He goes on to explain the phases of evaluating each of these providers, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as why he encourages CTOs to align themselves with their product teams. We finish up with a chat about why he recommends learning Amazon’s API Gateway and Amazon’s Athena API.  Join us for this deep dive into the world of cloud services on today's episode of CTO Studio!

Kate is the Queen of email organization and let's just say... Julie has #emailgoals. This episode is all about email organization 101. Kate is sharing how to start, tackle and organize your email and gives us tips on how to manage it once you get it down to zero. Email maintenance is super important. First things first - A cluttered email inbox is the same as having a cluttered house. When you have a tidy house, let's be real, we feel on top of the world and ready to tackle our next project. When the house is messy and cluttered, your mind constantly thinks about it. Here's how to tackle your email inbox and get it completely organized. EMAIL CLEANUP GOAL is to get your email inbox to ZERO! Schedule time If you're scared of deleting emails, archive them. Just start. Scroll, Look, Select all, Delete. Repeat. Keep any important emails you have in your inbox or if you already have folders created, file them away EMAIL ORGANIZATION Create folders such as receipts, clients, follow-ups, vendors, etc. When you get your email down to just the important ones, respond to them in order of importance. EMAIL MAINTENANCE To prevent email buildup in the future, use unroll.me. It's life-changing and helps you get a handle on just how many companies you have opted in their email list and then immediately unsubscribes or rolls them up in one pretty little email. Don't subscribe to anything with your business email - give your gmail email instead Do try to use your business email for client and vendor communication. Stay on top of it. Schedule a time or two times each day for your email time. Use email templates. Either save drafts in gmail and copy and paste your email or use a CRM like ShootQ and have your templates set up in there. There you have it! Happy organizing, Sparksters! You got this! XO, Julie & Kate

Have you guys heard about the BIG changes coming to ShootQ? We have, and we have been SO excited to see them roll out! If you aren't using ShootQ, you are missing out on a CRAZY valuable tool for your photography business. Chances are, if you're doing something manually in your business, ShootQ can take it over, and provide you with precious extra time! Emailing the same thing over and over? ShootQ can handle that. Still having clients sign their contracts in person? Let ShootQ email them a digital contract. Tired of collecting payments or sending invoices manually? Look no further. At this point, we're wondering if there's anything ShootQ CAN'T handle for us! We are SO excited about the changes, we invited Adam Fried back on the show to chat with us a bit about what's new, what's the same, and what to expect from the revamped ShootQ. Tune in to hear how you can take advantage of ShootQ to help you with your photography business! Key Takeaways Take FULL advantage of the free trial. Oftentimes, we'll sign up for a free trial for something, dip our toe in, and get so overwhelmed with the whole process that we don't really end up using whatever it is to it's full extent, which means we're just confused the whole 30 or 60 days or whatever, and end up not subscribing to the service at the end. So here's the awesome thing. ShootQ is designed to really help you with setting everything up. They help make the on boarding process fun, so you get incentives to complete your set up. There's always someone to help you, Don't be scared of change! If you already use ShootQ, don't be scared they're going to mix everything up on you! You have the option to keep things the same for as long as you like, and ShootQ is rolling out new features slowly, so you can very easily make the switch without feeling overwhelmed. Utilize questionnaires. Questionnaires are a GREAT way to know all sorts of things about your clients. From the very first inquiry, you can use a ShootQ questionnaire to find out more info about your client & what kind of shoot they're looking for. After the shoot, you can use a questionnaire to find out what worked, what didn't, and get honest feedback about your shoot. ShootQ has unlimited questionnaires you can send your clients, which makes the whole process very easy and streamlined! Keep track of all of your clients. ShootQ makes it SO easy to keep track of your clients. First off, obviously all their information is saved in your ShootQ, so you know their contact info. Also, you can look back on ALL your past shoots, and you can see notes you've made throughout the years. This is great for something like locations. You can make a note of what locations you've already used, so you know new locations to offer them. You can also note important things like birthdays and anniversaries, so you can send little notes or gifts on those big days! GO MOBILE. These guys are rolling out an AWESOME mobile app to go along with their service. It's going to be revamped, and easier to use than ever. You'll have all your client info at your fingertips, all the time. So if you forget something before the shoot (like dad's name... raise your hand if you've done that!), you can quickly look it up & save yourself! Of course, Adam talks about a LOT more ShootQ features, as well as shares a hilarious story about #vanlife. (You just have to listen, I can't explain that here!) Episode 71: Work, Life, and Family Balance

Play Episode Listen Later May 3, 2017 34:02

Let's start with an easy statement: Finding balance as a business owner is HARD. Seriously, SERIOUSLY hard. Whether you're single & trying to find balance between work & time with friends, or you're married with a bunch of kids & trying to find balance among that, balance is a struggle for most business owners. I know as a new mom, I often find it tough to feel good at the end of the day. Either I spent too much time on work stuff & missed spending time with my kiddo, or I played around with my kiddo all day and neglected some work stuff. It's really hard to have a perfect day where you feel accomplished in all areas of your life. However, it's very important that we figure out ways to do this, and to help us with this, we have Cathy Olson on the show this week! Cathy went through a pretty life-changing experience as a new mom and business owner a few years back, and it helped put everything in perspective for her. She's nailed this work, life, family balance thing & in this episode she gives some tips to help you do the same! Key Takeaways Get your priorities straight. To start, pick three important things you have to accomplish today. Don't try to do everything at once. It's easy (especially as women!) to feel pressure to do it all. However, picking just three things will help you feel accomplished at the end of the day, which will help you feel good about your day! That way, if you get more done, you feel even BETTER, but if you don't it's not a big deal. Kate has a strategy where she picks one business thing, one family thing, and one personal thing each day that she has to accomplish. This helps her feel like no area of her life is being neglected. Streamline your processes. We know we have covered this before but this is KEY to work, life, family balance as a business owner! There are many ways to streamline. Firstly, you can hire someone to take on some of your tasks. Whether this is an in-person office assistant, a virtual assistant to help with emails, or a retouching company, letting go of small tasks can add up to tons of extra time to spend with family or friends. Secondly, you can also make the most of organization apps and studio management software like Ashley & Julie do (whattup ShootQ!). By being efficient in your workflow, you free up time to spend in other areas of your life! Unplugging works both ways! Not only is it important to unplug from work stuff when you're with your family or friends, but it's also crucial to unplug from family & friend stuff when you're working! Unplugging in either direction will help you be present and in the moment with whatever you're doing at the moment, therefore helping you make the most of the time you have! Cathy mentions when she's on a  business trip, she is pretty much unplugged from her family. Not only does this make her a more effective networker, it keeps her in the right mindset because she isn't worrying about problems going on at home. On the other hand, unplugging from work stuff when spending time with your family is equally as important. Your kids, husband, boyfriend, best friend, etc should have your undivided attention as much as possible when you're getting quality personal time in. We hope you guys download this episode to hear more tips from Cathy about work, life, and family balance. This is such an important conversation to have, because so many of us feel like we are failing in these areas! The key to happiness as a business owner is figuring this stuff out, so let's do it together! Do you have some tips to share about balance? Share them on our Facebook page! Ok this episode was hard to do... why? Well, we were stuck in a studio on a rainy day while our interview-ee was hanging out on a freaking beach in Mexico!! MAN! We were so jealous. Isn't technology awesome?? Anyway, our lucky guest this week is Adam Fried from Simply Color Lab & ShootQ! He came on the show to chat about tools for automation, and we definitely had some questions about how to make the most out of client management software. ^^ Ashley and Julie had the chance to hang out with Adam in Las Vegas last week at WPPI! Key Takeaways Why should we use automation software? Photographers are super creative, but oftentimes that makes running a business a little difficult for us. These days, it's not just about who can take the best photo, it's also about who's the most organized, who can respond back to a lead faster, etc. Using tools for automation helps us rise above the rest of the pack, because we look more professional, stay more organized, and thus book more shoots. Ashley has mentioned that clients constantly tell her how easy the booking process was from start to finish. They've even mentioned that in Yelp reviews. ShootQ's client management software makes for a great customer experience! What are some "out of the box" ways to make your client management software work for you? Once your business is organized and you're using tools for automation, there are a number of ways to use it to your advantage. For example, Adam mentions you can single out certain families according to information from your client questionnaires... so if you wanted to do a sibling shoot, you could set up your ShootQ to find families with over 2 kids and create an email list from that information. Having all that info in the software saves a TON of time! Get excited for the "new" ShootQ! We didn't intend this episode to be a ShootQ commercial, haha, but it's hard to not get excited about all of the changes coming to ShootQ VERY soon! Adam talked a bit about the new systems, and they sound fantastic. First off, they're taking their time on launching it because they want to make sure it's perfect. Secondly, they aren't forcing users to switch over, but if a user decides to switch, ShootQ will help them transfer everything over to the new system. There aren't plans to turn the old system off anytime soon, which is AWESOME. There are updates to make client pages more mobile friendly, email templates easier, improvements to the app, and so much more! It was great to chat with Adam about tools for automation & ShootQ. We will probably have him back on the show once the next-gen ShootQ is launched to give us updates & chat about any questions we have about the new software, so stay tuned for that! Find the original post at: podcast.studiosherpas.com You know what one of my favorite emails that I get every single week is? It’s the email telling me that a client has just booked with me and my team. Then a few minutes later I get a second email with their retainer payment, then another that they’ve signed the contract. The best part about these emails is that I can be off spending time with my kids, or my wife, or working on other parts of my business while an automated system takes care of my new leads and clients. Adam Fried is the owner of ShootQ, having acquired the software company within the past year. In this episode, he shares his vision for how he and his team are revamping ShootQ to make it the very best studio management software on the market. My teams and I have been using ShootQ to manage our clients and workflows for the past ten years and I absolutely love it. This is one of those rare pieces of software that actually frees me up entirely to focus on the things I want to, like creating amazing films for my clients. That said, as much as I love the software, there were certainly more than a few pain points and complexities in the program. Adam basically checked off each of my concerns one by one, and it seems like pretty much every gripe I had has been addressed, and improved upon. While we’ll have to wait until the end of Q1 2017 to get our hands on it, I have a feeling that this new version of ShootQ might just be one of my favorite tools that helps me run my businesses successfully.
