Send us a Text Message.Get OBSESSED. Like so obsessed within your creative process that you grow, evolve, and become more as an Artist. Jerry shares how if you're only considerate of the outcome; the final shot, the revenue, then the joy experienced from achievement is only from the result. It lasts for a fraction of a second, and it is in his obsession with the process of creating that he stays IN the joy of being a professional Artist. That's the key. There are seasons, & one of those seasons is in building the workflows and systems required to maintain and grow a business BUT, we chose to create the business because we love creating. Photography is the vehicle in which we create for ourselves, and our clients. Without our connection to the creativity, we cannot grow. The season of creative exploration should never sideline for long. Arguably, it should be a priority in every season. There are multiple ways in which we can grow creatively; workshops, conferences, studying under a mentor, but one of the ways in which this photographer has found to be effective in that exploration is through awards submissions and accreditation. Can we play and grow in that exploration without it? Sure. Of course you can, but something shifts a bit in your mindset when you're submitting for review in these spaces: you obsess over details, you push yourself and hold yourself accountable TO every step of the process of creating. You're competing with yourself.Having entered into the photo space in the 90's, Jerry discovered how he loved being in the room with the Olympians of photography. And so many can feel intimidated in competition spaces because of those "heavyweights" however Jerry took it from a different approach, he was inspired by them.He took that inspiration and dove into unearthing his obsession with the creative process to deepen his love and connection with his work and those he was creating with and for.Jerry became immersed in the awards space that he connected to his client work with the mindset that "Today will be the album of the year!" because he was in competition with himself at every step, and has since elevated that connection to the photo industry in carrying the torch for WPPI and The Portrait Masters with the ICON Awards, led by he and his wife Melissa.Buy yourself some creative freedom. In the beginning stages of our businesses, our work doesn't always fit the vision we have in our heads and hearts. But in the business, we HAVE to serve, we have to connect, we have to get clients - but it is in that work that we are able to buy ourselves a bit of freedom to yes, sustain the business, but also to create on our terms as we grow as Artists too.Join us for this year's ICON Award submissionsEarly Bird deadline is August 31Submissons here: https://www.iconawards.com/Instagram: @myiconawardsFind more about Jerry Ghionis here:Education website: https://www.ghionis.com/Photography website: https://www.jerryghionisphotography.com/Instagram: @jerryghionisFull conversation on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/y8kTZqgiaPMSupport the Show.Become a supporter of The Studio Takeover podcast here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2284439/supporters/new

Send us a Text Message. On our business journey as portrait artists we will be faced with our own limiting beliefs around what we value. Canadian portrait photographer Aamel Abed shares how coming to the portrait space following a career in IT she sold her work, as many of us do for $60 a session and included everything for her clients. Then hopping on a plane from Canada to Las Vegas for the WPPI tradeshow to see "who these people were that were charging a THOUSAND dollars for their sessions and who they thought they were to charge so much" she discovered her next level of education with The Portrait System. She and Cat sat down in September of 2023 and Amel shared proudly she was averaging about $7000 in monthly sales (not too shabby) when Cat challenged her to reach for $10,000 instead of being complacent.Amel had to face that what she was earning wasn't enough for the income goals she had set and the way she was structuring her work would require far too many clients to reach those goals, so she enrolled with Cat as her Mentor and in just a few short months is now treating her business like a BUSINESS and making a difference not only in her sales process but also in how she shows up for the community of women she serves.Find Aamel here: Website https://www.diamondsportraits.ca/Instagram https://www.instagram.com/diamondsportraits/ Are you a Photographer? I never used to go to photography conferences. It's not that they didn't interest me, it's just that none of them cover my genre of music photography. WPPI is all about weddings and portraits, and while Imaging USA seems to cover a bit more, it doesn't go anywhere near concerts. Still, a few years ago I went to WPPI with a friend, to cover it on the show, and I found out that I didn't care what the conference covered. What I enjoyed the most was meeting other photographers after hours to talk shop. Since then, I have been to all but one WPPI, and a few of the old Photoshop World conferences - which I really miss. That is all to say that no matter what you think of conferences, the networking side is almost always worth the trip. This past January I decided to try out my first Imaging USA, partly because it was in Louisville, KY, the home of the Bourbon Trail. The conference, for me, was a huge success. I was able to hang out with some old friends, and meet a few new ones, like today's guest. While at Imaging I stopped by to say hello to my friends at the Platypod booth, and while there I met fellow Platypod Pro Lenworth Johnson. Lenworth is a commercial fashion and beauty photographer based in Houston, TX, and originally from Jamaica. We talked a bit at the conference, and I browsed through his site, and knew right then I needed to get him on the show. My original thought was to cover one of his amazing fashion or beauty shots, since that's what he's mostly known for, but that would have been obvious. Instead I decided we should focus on a tangential part of his work. Lenworth also shoots fashion related product photography, like perfumes and makeup, and I have never really had that genre on the show before. The challenges of product photography are quite varied, from holding highlights on reflective surfaces, to subject separation and color accuracy, and Lenworth tackles these challenges so well I thought he could help you and I get a better sense of this difficult subject matter. His work has been honored with multiple awards: 2019 Guru Awards Photoshop World Award 2020 Silver Advertising Award MIFA Award 2022 Gold Commercial Photography-Product MUSE Awards 2023 Gold People Photography-Portrait MUSE Awards 2023 Gold Commercial Photography-Fashion MUSE Awards As a KelbyOne instructor, Lenworth teaches a few classes, including Fashion & Beauty, lighting, and getting published. One of my favorite parts of doing this podcast is that I get to discover and meet some amazing photographers, and L.A. based Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill is a perfect example. We've all joked about a photographer we know being able to "shoot anything", but in reality very few people can truly shoot any subject matter. There are a few out there though, Joe McNally comes to mind, that just get it. Their photography seems to breath it's own air, and be alive. Joey is one of those talents. His career has included a range of specialties including architecture and interior design, advertising and corporate photography, golf course landscapes, and editorial portraiture, and his macro photography is fascinating. Joey's website has three galleries, Portraits, Scenes, and Macro, and if you spend a little time there you'll get some insight into how Joey sees the world. Perhaps this quote from his website sums it up best: "My camera is the window through which I experience life" From extreme close-up or a vast valley, to a portrait of a corporate CEO made to look like a star, Mr. Terrill just seems to understand what we are doing when we take a photo. He understands how to make a viewer feel something, as though they've been invited into the scene. That, my friend, is a skill I wish I had. Joey has worked with clients like American Express, Coca-Cola, Disney, Golf Digest, Major League Baseball, Nikon, Red Bull and Sports Illustrated. As an educator he teaches workshops and speaks at seminars including PhotoPlus Expo, WPPI, CES, Imaging USA, and of course Nikon School. It's 2024. The landscape of instagram and tik-tok (RIP?) and X (twitter?) and Facebook (is that still a thing?) is exhausting. It's a daily shift of what is trending and how to utilize the right audio, the right format, the right hashtags at the right times so that people even (gasp) see the work. If you're exhausted with even trying to wander through the darkness of social media you're not in the minority. The fact of the matter is the days of posting a photo, a super deep quote, and sitting back and watching clients roll in are over and catchy reels seem to be here to stay for awhile. Don't call him a street photographer. Derek Fahsbender is a legend in the Bronx and a familiar smile on the other side of the street in neighborhoods all over New York City. His bold approach to shooting the faces and the spaces of the city he calls home has shaped not only his own portfolio but the work of countless other shooters who call the streets of New York home. Close friends with icons of the genre like Phil Penman and Rinzi Ruiz what makes Derek's work unique is a truly intentional approach to his composition and an unbelievable ability to make people comfortable with him in pretty uncomfortable situations. He has a bold opinion about success, an unapologetic perspective on how to push your own work forward, and the backing of a few of the most known brands and retailers on earth standing right behind him and if that isn't enough to convince you that this conversation is worth hearing I can personally promise you, his vulnerability and humility will. One of my closest friends in the photography industry this was a chat I've been waiting to have publicly for a long time. Typically held over a whiskey at a tiny bar in New York or tucked away from the crowds over dinner at WPPI in Las Vegas my friendship with Derek has been filled with these conversations from the very beginning and I'm pretty excited to be able to share a deeper side of Derek with the world. Guest Teshorn Jackson and I have been Facebook friends and finally got to meet in person at WPPI in March. I immediately decided that we needed to do a podcast episode together, and here we are! If you're not familiar with Teshorn, he is a man of many hats (and he always has a fascinating hat on). Not only is he an award-winning wedding photographer, but he is also an educator that has traveled as far as Kenya and Cuba to teach. Teshorn also created an online community for Black Wedding Photographers across the globe to help establish, nurture, and educate members of the community. Fun fact: Teshorn studied architecture, and only picked up a camera because he was able to negotiate the seller down in price (just to try out his negotiating skills). And just look where he is now. We had a wonderful conversation! We talked about everything from using architecture in photos, to the pros and cons of being an introvert that needs to sell, and even chatted about how utilizing systems as an entrepreneur can help you ensure that you can run any type of business. For instance, Teshorn shares that for wedding photographers, using these three things in your systems will help make your couples want to work with you more, so you have to sell to them less.                              The key to selling starts with listening and asking both relevant and non-relevant questions.Use psychology: fear of loss, the desire of gain. Have a System! Create a written process and edit it on a regular basis to make sure it still works for you.Teshorn's final thoughts for us: Things that become ordinary to you, could be extraordinary to someone else later on. The value of education is priceless. Take care of your clients, they matter. Even if you don't have all the answers it's okay to just jump. Not only did Teshorn share all of this valuable information (and so much more!) with us, but he's also offering $250 off registration to The Resolve Workshop, which will be held next January in Mexico City. Just mention my name for the discount. What a gift! Register here: www.resolveworkshop.comInterested in learning more from Teshorn? I first heard about wedding and portrait photographer, and wedding videographer, Andre Brown through my buddy Ant Pruitt's show "Hands on Photography", when Andre was on for a Photographers' Go-To Tip. I knew I wanted to get him on the show, and once I realized he was an Ambassador for StellaPro - an amazing line of lighting - I worked my contacts there to help get him on Behind the Shot. Here's the thing, Andre's work is different, it's unique in a number of ways. The post "Finding My Success by Exploring Light", for Sal Cincotta's Behind the Shutter, is a great read, and really helps to understand Andre as a creative.  His overall approach, as he has described it, is "...a high-fashion, editorial photography style. Showcasing my clients, and my culture with style and opulence. Creating drama with light and the absence of light". What struck me was how he described that he had been "replicating what I saw on the popular wedding blogs. High Key light, light and airy, kind of whimsical", but that his realization that the presence of black culture on some major sites, and in mainstream publications, was fairly non-existent outside of predominantly black publications like Essence and Ebony. As I read that it was like I was seeing the process of finding yourself - creatively - explained, step by step. We all start by re-creating, or emulating, what we see, or like, or think will work, but at some point (at least for the best out there) we have to find why we are doing this at all, what makes us pick up the camera. Seriously, go read that post. Andre is so talented that he has won awards that I know many have tried and never won. For example, the image we are talking about on this show won the 2019 WPPI Silver Distinction Award, and the 2019 WPPI Wedding Division, Bridal Party Award for Second Place. If you've never seen a WPPI competition, it's tough, damn tough. Oh yeah, that was his first competition! Since then he's racked up more than I can list. As an educator, Andre is a sought after speaker, and workshop leader. He has been published in outlets including Essence Magazine, Huffington Post, The Knot, Munaluchi Bride, Black Bride, The B Collective Magazine, and Huffington Post, and his work has also appeared on ABC News, and Good Morning America. A few things in Andre's bio intrigue me, and one in particular makes me think we might be good friends. Andre got his Bachelor of Science in Recording Arts, and at 19 he was the manager of Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Ric Rude. Whoa. His work through that relationship with Ric Rude included, most notably, "Cater 2 U" by Destiny's Child and hits for other artists including Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Bow Wow, Omarion, Redman and Method Man, to name a few. I am so curious about this part of his history. The part that made me think we may already be friends is the fact that in his spare time he binge- watches episodes of Law and Order. I record re-runs of the original show regularly. Almost 500 episodes over 20 years means I still come across shows I haven't seen. Join award winning photographer, and Ambassador for StellaPro, Andre Brown and me as we dive into his high-fashion, editorial approach to wedding photography, on this Behind the Shot. He started his photography business more than 15 years ago while serving in the Navy. Due to the military requirements, he learned to make his studio “interstate mobile” as he has operated for extended periods in Virginia, Florida, Utah, Georgia, South Carolina, and California. Have you ever considered getting into fine art school photography? Not entirely sure what that is? Your experience with school photos is probably limited to a photographer spending approximately 30 seconds with you (if that) and praying that one of the three exposures they took looks decent enough to be printed. Luckily, today there are other options. In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Connecticut portrait photographer, Lindsey Victoria, about the fine art school portrait niche and how you can get started on adding this service. We go over gear you might find helpful, how to reach out to potential schools, as well as tips on prompting your subjects and much more.
