Our 100th episode is here, featuring Hot Chicken Takeover! Thank you for joining the People Helping People podcast on this journey, and coming this far with the show. We truly appreciate your participation, your sincere interest, and your shared enthusiasm. Today, we have another insightful conversation through a leader in the community who built a shining example of a hiring model: Joe DeLoss. Joe DeLoss started the Hot Chicken Takeover restaurant chain that prioritizes fair chance employment. This fast-casual fried chicken restaurant uses business as a vehicle to create opportunity. No matter what somebody's resume or alternative resume from their past looks like, the intention is to offer an opportunity. Hot Chicken Takeover provides an environment for people who dealt with adversity to steady themselves. Pillars to Building Culture Three pillars help Hot Chicken Takeover maintain a strong development of the initiative: clear expectations, relevant benefits, and frequent feedback. Joe DeLoss explained where Hot Chicken Takeover places focus to match the needs of the employees. He spoke on valuing a positive work environment that offers more ownership of career trajectory. By using the three pillars, a more cohesive and clear company culture can be built. “The best employment is about investing in people's personal stability because it yields professional stability.”-Joe DeLoss In the service industry, many companies may experience a high turnover percentage that could be addressed if looking deeper into the challenges employees are facing. Some common factors are transportation or housing issues that can add additional strain on employee performance. Hot Chicken Takeover intervenes in these issues by providing assistance, such as having parental leave and a partnership with a local biking company. Understandably, Hot Chicken Takeover finds ways to accommodate the needs of employees by keeping open communication and securing relevant assistance. Success through Iteration Joe DeLoss discussed how his passion for the intersection of impact and entrepreneurship grew over the years. Success didn't happen right away, but each moment created a chance at new information and insight. He gave his lessons on encountering new opportunities and problems along the way. With being so involved in the business, Joe talked through specific growing pains, like investors and media presence. Since Joe has experience with mentoring budding social entrepreneurs, we discussed general tips for creating a career in social enterprise. Joe started off with learning about the business and impact model as an important point in developing an understanding of the field. He spoke about l the kind of transparent involvement social enterprise can require when first starting. To connect the ideas, Joe shared examples from the earlier parts of his journey. Out of all the lessons he learned, Joe DeLoss emphasized the principle that connects almost every situation. While working through the early stages, he found that moving anything a step forward requires an iterative mindset. Alongside this point, Joe expressed his thoughts on adapting to new circumstances and letting go of ego. Social entrepreneurs will find that these mindsets are especially true when expanding an initiative. What I didn't know was how absolutely entertaining Jake was going to be while on the air. If you're not following Jake (@jakehuttgolf), you are truly doing yourself a disservice. Since Joe featured Jake on Look at this Instagram a few weeks back, I've been totally enamored with his quick and witty way of getting some extremely valuable information out to the masses. His videos are quick, on topic, to the point, but most of all, THEY WILL HELP YOU PLAY BETTER GOLF. And, who doesn't want that? Beyond his Instagram world, though, we found some fantastic details about Jake and his life with the game. Much like others we have interviewed recently, Jake is doing some good with his instacelebrity status and is helping raise money for kids in Uganda to help them play golf. Click HERE to be taken to the Clubs for Kids Fundraiser and help Jake reach his goal! We also learned about DryveBox, which is a unique way that Jake and his partners will be bringing golf to the people, not people to golf. Yeah, that's a headscratcher, but listen in, and you'll understand! Then as we were chatting, Jake broke down how the stats from GameForge can help you play better golf. And then he completely blew my mind when he talked about putting and a metronome: such good stuff and an awesome episode. We want to thank Jake for coming on the show. It was a blast getting to know him more and learn about all the things he's up to and what's going down in 2021! Be sure to give him a follow and stay on the lookout for DryveBox in a city near you! If you're like us, you adored Revenge of the Nerds growing up. Love it or hate it, there is no denying it was iconic 80s comedy! That being said, since we were all youngins when it came out in 1984, the only character that we could really relate to was Wormser! So as we were discussing Revenge of the Nerds a few weeks ago, Joe Findlay said "see if Andrew Cassese wants to be a judge". Great idea, Joe! We sent Andrew a message, and he was totally down to be a guest judge! Without hesitation, we booked a room at the HOTel cORAL eSEXx, and passed over the gavel to Andrew! After a month off, it's been a while since we did a "best of" month, and we forgot just how closely contested these months can be. Since Joe suggested Andrew to be on the show, he came equipped with the best of October, 1983! Our good pal Beau Becraft is back in the fold, and we put him right in his wheelhouse with an October 1995 that only Beau could deliver. Rounding out the panel, Mancrush comes with a spooky October, 1978! Andrew brings out his inner Wormser, and utilized his superior intellect to navigate this extremely close battle of decades! In this episode you might find out: Wormsers fondest memories from being a tri-lamb, a restaurant that broaches on judge pandering, a major band plays a show for three people, Andrew interrupts a bronco chase, Joe surprises no one by bringing more death, the birth of the stink palm, real Bond goes bootleg Bond, an independent movie kills the competition, the Jets get embarrassed by an expansion team, evil robot clones takeover Magic Mountain, Tony Manero was not the best costume of 1978, a Yokozuna doubleheader no one asked for, a computer program kills the typewriter, douche brothers create a masterpiece, Mancrush duets with Wormser, Captain Lou makes a cameo, Andrew is NOT Bret Spiner, the difference between Adams College and Fort Lauderdale, Wormer cleans up at the Greek games, Wormser's stand-in shows up intoxicated, and what was it like to be a kid on the set of Revenge of the Nerds? Do you agree with Andrew's rulings? Play at home and judge for yourself! While you're at it, send your rulings to our Facebook and pick up 20 points on the Dueling Decades Leaderboard! Building Materials Industry | Building Materials and Structural Design Joe Bruno is an architect who specializes in residential and commercial. He has done a significant amount of projects for municipalities and school districts, and he involves himself in every facet of the process from conception through completion. Since Joe has a handle on engineering and execution on top of his specialization, he is constantly watching trends in the building materials industry. Recently, Joe has noticed an increase in new technologies being introduced to the market, providing him with new ways to solve architectural problems as he incorporates these technologies into his designs. Engineered Lumber The building materials industry is always coming out with new products, but in Joe’s eyes, the latest trend has made the greatest impact on the structural design. Open floor plans are in extremely high demand right now and they pose many new challenges for architects across the country. Engineered lumber has enabled architects to create sprawling open floorplans without using a forest of columns or other laborious techniques. It is stronger than sawed lumber and more fire-resistant, so Joe has been able to expand his offerings to clients at a better price. The Future of Building Materials in Architecture Continuing with the idea of price, Joe predicts the building materials industry will see a continuing trend of greater variety at a lower cost. This includes materials that have traditionally only been accessible to the rich, like granite countertops and other finishes. Window manufacturers will offer a wider array of options and some of them are only available because new materials can withstand the stresses of new designs. Either way, the goal is to select the right materials for each job. And with an increasing number of different options available to us, the entire design-build process continues to become more efficient. About Joe Bruno Joseph J. Bruno, AIA is an architect in private practice in Park Ridge, New Jersey. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 1983. His extensive experience includes the design of schools, commercial buildings, and residences. Since establishing his own practice in 2000 he has focused primarily on custom residential design. This aspect of architectural practice is particularly satisfying as he has the ability to connect one on one with his clients in the pursuit of creating their dream homes. He has entered the stage of his career when the sons and daughters of his first clients are beginning to come to him to design homes for themselves and their families. Mr. Bruno has recently completed a 12 ½ year term as Trustee of the Park Ridge Board of Education where he served as President since 2008. He had previously served on the Board of Trustees of the Architects League of Northern New Jersey for many years before serving as President in 1998. What You Will Learn: Joe’s background in architecture and construction New trends in the building materials industry The future of building materials in architecture How building materials manufacturers are increasing their visibility and selling their technology Where Joe looks for new information about building materials and products The importance of brand in Joe’s decision-making process Resources: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Joseph-J-Bruno-AIA-340185043579735/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-bruno-40137112/ Instagram: @josephj.bruno

About Joe Matelich (https://www.physicianadvising.com/) FACEBOOK -  (https://www.facebook.com/physicianadvising#) TWITTER -  (https://twitter.com/physicianadv) Joe is a fee-only advisor and solopreneur at Physician Advising, where he provides physician-specific financial advice at a fair price. After work, Joe is typically found in the kitchen trying to match the timing of a hot meal to his wife's variable residency schedule. Since Joe is a big fan of cooking, a fitting metaphor for Joe's work as a financial advisor is that of going to a highly recommended restaurant because the chef uses fresh ingredients and eats what he cooks. In financial planning and investment management, Joe's recommendations mirror his family's actions. Most people recognize that they need professional advice on how to earn, save, and invest their money. When it comes to spending that money, most people just follow their intuitions. But scientific research shows that those intuitions are often wrong. Happy Money offers a tour of research on the science of spending, explaining how you can get more happiness for your money. Authors Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton have outlined five principles—from choosing experiences over stuff to spending money on others—to guide not only individuals looking for financial security, but also companies seeking to create happier employees and provide “happier products” to their customers. Dunn and Norton show how companies from Google to Pepsi to Charmin have put these ideas into action. Along the way, Dunn and Norton explore fascinating research that reveals that luxury cars often provide no more pleasure than economy models, that commercials can actually enhance the enjoyment of watching television, and that residents of many cities frequently miss out on inexpensive pleasures in their hometowns. By the end of this “lively and engaging book” (Dan Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness), you’ll be asking yourself one simple question every time you reach for your wallet: Am I getting the biggest happiness bang for my buck? A key aspect of trading success is realizing that it is a business. Because of this, you better be ready to step in as the CEO and operate it as such. Community member Joe (“JBH” in the chat room) gives us all a shining example of exactly what this looks like. He has built businesses before, and now he’s in the business of trading and he’s doing exactly what needs to be done. He’s a great reason why I love doing these podcasts… he had me fired up and inspired by just how serious he treats all of this. There are way too many jokers out there that don’t take trading seriously enough, only to complain “it’s all rigged”… this is NOT the case with Joe! Notes: Joe had taken a long road trip to clear his head and when he arrived back home he realized that he did not want to start another company so the stock market would be his new income source. An EXTREMELY rare thing happened with Joe. He falls into one of the rarest categories because he did not do any live trading until he got educated first (which we usually never see). Since Joe has started multiple businesses from scratch he understands that any successful company requires lots of preparation, research, and overall hard work. He gave up the chase for quick riches a long time ago and recognizes anything of worth requires serious concentrated effort. Joe also realizes the importance of not lingering on previous losses and gains. After each trade it is important to learn as much as you can but remember, there are more trades to be made the next day and if you carry those previous trades with you they will certainly impact your performance. A strong trait to master is the ability to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses. Joe has identified those pesky voices that generally cause a trader to lose money and with that recognition he can see what is to be ignored and what is to be acted upon. Quotes: “I was googling, I was hash tagging. I’m kind of a nut when it comes to research. I was an investor, not a trader.” tweet this quote “Robotic Trading says it is not an emotional thing. That’s BS. If you’re a sore loser like me that’s an emotion. It’s hard to take that away.” tweet this quote “If I keep adding all these other indicators then I just cloud my judgement with more opportunities to screw up.” tweet this quote “You don’t need to risk a lot of capital to make a bit of money. The pendulum is swinging closer to gambling when you risk a lot.” tweet this quote “You have to have an exit strategy and not get too greedy with a loss or with a profit. Don’t ever think it’s going to bounce back.” tweet this quote Links: Video: Live Day Trade: How to Make $185 in 2 Minutes Video: Avoid the Pattern Day Trader Rules
