"Take that step back and look at how the fabric that we exist in with our industries can change...I think there is so much room to embrace the opportunities, a challenge generally means there is money to be made as soon as you figure out how to do it." This podcast is a part of a series of episodes that will be coming out from now until Spring 2025 covering the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas April 23rd – 25th 2025. We encourage our listeners and partners to share and engage with us during this conference coverage! Use the promo code “AOCMFER” that will take $250 off registration. In this conversation, Devon Tilly and co-host Nathan Wood chat withNick Caravella in preparation for the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas in April 2025! With over a decade of experience in the industry, Nick Caravella has a unique outlook by starting his career as an architect. His passion for using new technology on projects led him to a career in construction technology, where he worked in a series of product and community focused initiatives which further highlighted how companies could be enabling growth through optimizing their technology approach. Through this journey, Nick joined Avicado Construction Technology Services, where he currently works as the Director of Growth and Industry Strategy, as well as the Host/Producer of the company's construction technology podcast, Wired to Build. His background in architecture and expertise with technology provides a unique background that understands the needs of the AEC-O industry and how to apply the solutions being created to the problems we're trying to solve today. Nick holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is a registered Architect. Co-host Nathan Wood understands how rewarding the design and construction process can be when technology and culture embrace a new era of innovation. Nathan first earned his reputation as an industry thought leader in 2011, sharing his award-winning implementation of virtual design and construction (VDC) while working on integrated project delivery (IPD) healthcare projects. Nathan strives to share the best practices and lessons learned he's gathered from over 100 project teams spanning the US, Europe, and the Middle East. These experiences have taught him that when it comes to adopting technology in construction, it's not one size fits all. For that reason, Nathan founded SpectrumAEC with a clear goal — solving the human barriers to new process and technology adoption. As SpectrumAEC's founder and chief enabling officer, Nathan helps organizations and project teams successfully adopt change through executive strategy sessions and end user workshops. Nathan continues to support industry progression through conference presentations, academic papers, and as President of the Construction Progress Coalition. Prometheus, USA, 2012Victor J. Michael's journey from a corporate executive at Johnson & Johnson to spearheading a global recycling initiative is nothing short of remarkable. His vision extends beyond environmental stewardship, delving deep into social justice and poverty alleviation.Michael vividly recounted his eye-opening experience in Brazil, which laid the foundation for his transformative work. "I remember one woman distinctly eating from the conveyor belt as she was sorting through the trash, trying to get the recyclables out. I thought, Johnson & Johnson can't use this material. But now that I've seen it, I don't feel like I can walk away." This poignant moment underscores the stark realities faced by those at the frontline of the informal recycling sector, a community often overlooked yet integral to our global ecosystem.Under Michael's guidance, iWrc champions a unique approach, emphasizing the importance of integrating and uplifting these informal recyclers. By offering training and creating viable supply chains, iWrc not only enhances the livelihoods of these individuals but also propels the corporate world towards more sustainable and responsible practices. The essence of Michael's work transcends the conventional boundaries of recycling; it's about recognizing the inherent value in every individual and their contribution to our planet. His initiative is a testament to the power of compassionate leadership and the potential for corporate responsibility to foster genuine, widespread impact. As I reflect on our conversation, I'm reminded of the profound interconnectedness of our actions and their ripple effects on both humanity and the environment. Michael's story is a beacon of hope and a call to action, urging us all to rethink our approach to sustainability and social equity. Through collective effort and empathy, we can transform the very fabric of our global community, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.AI Episode Summary1. Michael Maggio is the CEO and founder of iWrc (Informal Waste Recycling Consortium), a company focusing on recycling and poverty alleviation.2. Michael's journey with iWrc began during his tenure at Johnson & Johnson, where, tasked with sustainability goals, he aimed to use recycled material in packaging.3. On a trip to Brazil, after proposing the use of recycled material, Michael was taken to a local recycling co-op, where he was confronted with poor working conditions for those sorting recyclables.4. The conditions prompted the creation of Project Phoenix to train and certify recycling cooperatives to become part of Johnson & Johnson's supply chain.5. When Michael decided to leave J&J and pursue this full-time, J&J supported him and became iWrc's first client on the condition he involved other companies.6. iWrc operates by forming a consortium of corporations aiming to use recycled materials responsibly, addressing the entire supply chain for both social and environmental impact.7. iWrc's model ensures that current workers in recycling co-ops are trained and integrated into improved processing streams rather than replaced.8. Michael highlights the critical role that seeing hope plays in his leadership and approach to business, using hope to transform perspectives and inspire changemaking efforts.9. Through storytelling, Michael and his team sustain morale by highlighting "People First" moments that celebrate successes and learn from challenges.10. Interested individuals or companies can get involved with iWrc or learn more about their work by visiting their website, checking out iWrc University for training videos, or connecting with Michael via LinkedIn.How to Develop Recognizing Hope As a SuperpowerMichael Maggio's superpower is the "Ability to Recognize Hope." This quality has allowed him to see potential and possibilities where others might see insurmountable challenges or dismiss opportunities for change. His superpower is grounded in a profound belief in the potential for positive change, even in the most difficult circumstances.A compelling story that exemplifies Michael's superpower is his encounter with Becky, the president of a cooperative in Brazil. Despite working under dire conditions, Becky and her team displayed an unyielding spirit and a sense of purpose that deeply inspired Michael. Their dedication to recycling, despite having very little and working in tough conditions, highlighted the hope and potential Michael sees in people and situations. This interaction was pivotal, encouraging him to leave his comfortable role at J&J to actively engage in making a significant impact. For those looking to develop a similar superpower, Michael's journey offers valuable insights. * First, engage directly with the people involved in the work you're interested in, as this can provide unique perspectives and inspiration. * Second, focus on the positive impact of the work, both environmentally and socially, to maintain motivation and drive. * Third, remember the broader mission and the individuals you're helping when facing challenges or complications in your work. * Lastly, storytelling can be a powerful tool to remind yourself and others of the value and impact of your work, especially during tough times.By following Michael Maggio's example and advice, you can make the "Ability to Recognize Hope" a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileMichael Maggio (he/him):President and Founder, iWrcAbout iWrc: iWrc (Inclusive Waste Recycling Consortium) was founded in 2019 at the request of our founding members, consisting of HP, J&J, KCC and FEMSA Foundation, all with the same goal of including post-consumer waste (PCR) recovered from the environment by recycling cooperatives and autonomous collectors. On his first visit to Brazil, Michael Maggio, our CEO and founder, worked as global vice president of packaging and global head of engineering at Johnson & Johnson and was then introduced to the risks that exist when integrating them into the formal supply chain. When visiting cooperatives, he saw shirtless men and women without shoes, children on site, electrical wires hanging from the ceiling, no drinking water and no working toilets. Since then, he was determined to improve conditions for the people he realized were the first line of defense in protecting the environment by providing recycling services where none existed. To achieve this, iWrc's vision was created together to build an environment where people, the community and businesses benefit from the transformation of waste into valuable resources. We set out to do this by eliminating individual risk factors for those who recycle in emerging markets and live at or below the poverty line – risk factors such as child labor, forced labor, unsafe and inhumane working conditions, which improve the health of waste pickers. recyclable materials and well-being while integrating the material they collect into the value chains of our public/private business partners. To date, through the iWrc approach, we have helped reinsert thousands of tons of recycled material into the supply chain, saved thousands of dollars in logistics costs, generated millions in revenue for our partner cooperatives and trained thousands of workers in the recycling market.Website: iwrc.worldBiographical Information: Michael Maggio is the president at iWrc (Inclusive Waste Recycling Consortium), a digitally enabled collaborative platform that builds a self-sustaining circular ecosystem between consumers, waste pickers, recycling cooperatives and brand partners. iWrc currently works with waste pickers in Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and India to help them achieve a global social accountability certification whilst providing reverse logistics and helping their brand partners meet their commitments to the National Solid Waste Policy.Michael is the founder and driving force behind this initiative and has helped transform the supply chains impact in emerging markets through a unique sustainability effort that encourages economic supply and demand, recycling and self-sufficient, responsible growth. He has also written extensively on a concept called Positive Potential™, a strategy to balance waste generation against measurable positive sustainability initiatives. His corporate journey was predominantly based in the fast-moving consumer goods industry, serving most recently as the Vice President of Global Engineering and Packaging at Johnson & Johnson. Prior to that, he served in senior leadership roles within the engineering organizations at The Estée Lauder Companies, Inc., Avon Products, Inc., and L'Oréal Paris. He received his Bachelor of Science, Packaging from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a Master of Science, Environmental Science and Chemistry from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and a Master of Business Administration from the Cornell University S.C. Our guest this week is a talented designer who is redefining the world of hospitality design. With over 25 years of experience, she has lent her expertise as an Adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Please welcome to the show Senior Director, Design & Project Management at Marriott International, Linda Laucirica!Linda joins Host Dan Ryan for an in depth conversation on design philosophy. Linda shares the importance of starting with a cohesive design strategy before creating a narrative, the necessity of having an elevator pitch, and how the hospitality industry can create more welcoming spaces in the healthcare industry. Takeaways: Hospitality is the desire to give comfort and joy. True hospitality comes from a celebration of shared human experience, and a desire to connect through that humanity with others The intersection of storytelling and design, with an emphasis on editing and conveying clear messages, is crucial in creating impactful narratives. This is important in full-service lifestyle brands, where aspirational design plays a key role in brand identity. When conducting research and designing for a brand, it is essential to effectively summarize the concept in a concise elevator pitch. This helps align design decisions with the brand's vision and ensures unique project outcomes. Creating successful narratives for "soft brands" requires a different approach than for "hard brands". Designers must create a strategy that directly connects with the brand's vision, ethos, and personality, before jumping into crafting a compelling narrative. Technology has impacted the design process, shifting from manual creation to digital tools and 3D visualization. This transformation emphasizes the need for designers to adapt, understand scale, and create spaces that resonate with our human experience. Hospitality focused design has an important role in the healthcare industry. By creating welcoming hospitals and treatment centers, you can leave a positive impact on someone's journey to healing. For Mariott's W Hotels there are three tenets of design: form follows fantastic, tactile materiality, and clean maximalism. These three elements combine to create unique experiences for guests. Quote of the Show:“That message also wants to have an emotional connection to who you're speaking with, right? Otherwise why write the story? Why share your thoughts?” - Linda LauciricaLinks: Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/lindalaucirica/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauciricadesign/ Website: https://www.marriott.com/marriott/aboutmarriott.mi Shout Outs: 01:38 - McCartan Design: http://www.mccartan.com/ 03:26 - The Peanuts 04:10 - NJIT: https://www.njit.edu/ 06:07 - Cornell: https://www.cornell.edu/ 09:22 - Starwood Hotels 09:49 - Westin Hotels: https://westin.marriott.com/ 09:49 - Autograph Collection Hotels: https://autograph-hotels.marriott.com/ 09:50 - Le Méridien Hotels: https://le-meridien.marriott.com/ 09:51 - Renaissance Hotels: https://renaissance-hotels.marriott.com/ 09:52 - Design Hotels: http://designhotels.com/ 09:53 - Tribute Hotels: https://tribute-portfolio.marriott.com/ 09:56 - Gaylord Hotels: https://www.gaylordhotels.com/ 10:19 - W Hotels: https://w-hotels.marriott.com/ 19:31 - Dune 20:59 - Rockwell Group: https://www.rockwellgroup.com/ 21:01 - Barnes And Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/ 21:29 - Pinterest 21:30 - Instagram 22:01 - Revit 27:04 - Woolly Mammoth Theatre: https://www.woollymammoth.net/ 27:05 - Arena Stage: https://www.arenastage.org/ 28:17 - New York School Of Interior Design: https://www.nysid.edu/ 29:50 - Mohegan Sun: https://mohegansun.com/ 30:10 - David Rockwell 30:46 - Children's Hospital at Montefiore: https://www.cham.org/ 31:43 - Carl Sagan 34:32 - Lionel Ohayon: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lionelohayon/ 34:35 - Memorial Sloan Kettering: https://www.mskcc.org/ 36:58 - W Union Square: https://www.whotelsnewyork.com/property/w-new-york-union-square/ 44:02 - Steve Higgins 44:08 - Theresa Fatino: https://www.fatinodesign.com/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419
Birds and bees do it … and so do fish. In a discovery that highlights the adaptive benefits of walking, scientists have discovered fish that can walk on land. Not fin-flap their bodies, mind you, but ambulate like reptiles. And speaking of which, new research shows that T Rex, the biggest reptile of them all, wasn't a sprinter, but could be an efficient hunter by outwalking its prey. Find out the advantage of legging it, and how human bipedalism stacks up. Not only is walking good for our bodies and brains, but not walking can change your personality and adversely affect your health. Guests: Hans Larsson – Paleontologist and biologist, and Director of the Redpath Museum at McGill University in Montréal. Shane O'Mara – Neuroscientist and professor of experimental brain research at Trinity College Dublin. He is the author of “In Praise of Walking.” Brooke Flammang – Biologist at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In the last few years, many on the left have been calling for a “Green New Deal,” but we might have already had that. Between 1933 and 1942, the Civilian Conservation Corps enlisted more than three million young men in a project that planted two billion trees, slowed soil erosion on forty million acres of farmland, and enjoyed support across political and geographic divides. In this episode we talk with Neil Maher, author of Nature's New Deal: The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Roots of the American Environmental Movement (Oxford University Press, 2008) about how the CCC helped solidify FDR's New Deal and spread the seeds of environmental activism for generations to come. Dr. Neil Maher is a Professor of History and Master Teacher in the Federated History Department at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University-Newark. He is also the author of Apollo in the Age of Aquarius (Harvard University Press, 2017). You can find out more about his work at NeilMaher.com. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher
