This week on the MMA History Podcast episode 341, hosts Joey Venti and the MMA Detective Mike Davis sit down with two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, Hollywood stuntman and actor Frank Trigg for a raw, unfiltered look at the chaotic early days of mixed martial arts. Trigg shares how he coached a talented high school wrestler named Kid Yamamoto in Phoenix before the Japanese star became a Pride FC standout, the real reasons Yamamoto was deported, and the explosive behind-the-scenes fallout from the infamous Rickson Gracie versus Rico Chiapparelli showdown that got Chiapparelli uninvited from major grappling circles. From his time with Real American Wrestling alongside the likes of Randy Couture and Dan Henderson, the first Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament against Renzo Gracie, early Japan promotions including Vale Tudo Japan against Jean Jacques Machado, Pride Bushido commentating, and the cutthroat realities of 1990s fight money and worked matches, Trigg delivers stories and details few others have ever heard. Lima and Daryl Ruiter argue that LeBron James already settled his debt to Cleveland by winning the 2016 championship, meaning his choice to sign with Philadelphia over the Cavs requires no further explanation or resentment toward him personally. They admit to fully "hate watching" LeBron going forward now that he's an Eastern Conference rival, while pushing back on the idea that Philadelphia fans, known for their misery, will actually make him happier than staying home would have. A caller ties the decision back to LeBron's 2010 Decision letter and his complicated relationship with Dan Gilbert, which the hosts largely dismiss as ancient history settled by the 2016 title.

Dan Gilbert wears many hats: NBA owner, entrepreneur, Detroit booster and Dad.  While building Rocket Companies – the $30 billion mortgage giant – and investing billions in the Motor City's 21st century development, he was a rare disease parent. Gilbert's oldest child, Nick, died in 2023 following a lifelong battle with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways anywhere in the body.  The most common type, NF1, affects approximately 1 in 2,500 births. Half of those patients develop learning and physical challenges.    Nick had a following among basketball fans. He represented the Cleveland Cavaliers at multiple NBA draft lotteries and proved something of a good luck charm for the team and the city.  Since his death, the Gilbert family have pledged millions to fund research initiatives in the hopes of finding a cure for NF.    Read more about the Gilbert Family Foundation's work here: https://gilbertfamilyfoundation.org/ Follow the high-impact research to develop treatments for neurofibromatosis type 1: https://www.nfxdetroit.org/     If you are a parent or caregiver seeking NF information: https://www.ctf.org/      Join us in advancing awareness and understanding of rare diseases. Ken and Lima keep the phones hot as callers debate where the blame really lands, with one caller going to bat for Dean Wade and another comparing Harden guarding Brunson to a football referee. The Donovan Mitchell question cuts to the heart of it — was he scared or just gassed, and does the answer change what comes next? Dan Gilbert hitting social media after the game is the final thread Ken teases heading into the break, and it sounds like the owner isn't hiding how he feels either.

Ken and Lima wake up to backlash over Kenny Atkinson's postgame story about Dan Gilbert showing up to dinner the night before Game 7 and telling him Jared Allen was the key, with fans reading it as a coach who needed his billionaire owner to tell him how to use his own roster. Ken pushes back, arguing Kenny was just trying to tell a fun story and the criticism is overblown for a team now in the Eastern Conference Finals. The bigger point is that if they had lost, these same questions about Kenny, Mobley, Mitchell's contract, and Harden's extension would have consumed the entire offseason.

The Cavs blew out Detroit 125-94 in Game 7 to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, and Ken declares the season a success regardless of what happens next against the Knicks. He points out that a team which started 17-16 with fans calling for trades and firings has now proven itself as one of the four best teams in the NBA, which is exactly what the James Harden trade was supposed to accomplish. Ken also raves about Dan Gilbert bussing Cavs fans to Game 7 in Detroit, which turned into an all-time experience when the Cavs took over the arena in the fourth quarter and won by 31. The one honest note Ken sounds heading into the series: the Knicks have been resting while Cleveland just survived a dogfight, and Game 1 might not go their way.

0:00 - The Avs are facing the Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final. They won't just have the support of Avs fans. They'll have the support of the entire NHL World. Since Vegas entered the league almost 10 years ago, they've consistently rubbed everyone the wrong way. No one outside the state of Nevada wants to see them succeed ever again.17:51 - The Cavaliers beat the Pistons in Game 7 to advance to the ECF yesterday. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert bought 1200 tickets and 25 buses to send a bunch of Cavs fans the game in Detriot. If you remember, Steve Ballmer did the same thing to the Nuggets last year! He bought a bunch of tickets and flew Clippers fans to Game 7 in Denver. That feels weird, right? That shouldn't be allowed. But how would you begin to police that? 34:14 - Oh, by the way...The Rockies are struggling again. Big time. But the GOOD news is, they actually have a tradable asset in the bullpen now! Oh, by the way...a high school track & field team was disqualified from winning their 5th-straight state championship because of a "taunting" gesture. Oh, by the way...Ronda Rousey fought Gina Carano this weekend and won in less than 15 seconds. Rousey's decisive victory in her return to fighting seemed almost too good to be true. Internet conspiracies abound!
