Ken comes out firmly against a teardown despite the humiliating sweep, arguing that going from one of the final four teams in the NBA to a 20-win rebuilding project is not the answer, especially when you don't own your own picks. The Harden divide gets its full autopsy here — Ken can't reconcile why fans loved the Sexton-Garland teams that accomplished nothing but turned on the Hall of Famer who actually got them to the conference finals. The window is probably one more year, Kenny Atkinson's job security is already a question, and Dan Gilbert's personality as an owner makes a true rebuild almost unthinkable.

Kenny Atkinson's postgame comment about analytically being up 2-1 in the series lands as one of the worst things a coach could possibly say after getting swept, and Ken predicts he could be fired before lunchtime given how Dan Gilbert thinks like a fan. The Evan Mobley question gets its most honest airing yet, with a caller making the case that his playoff aggression in the paint is exactly what the next step looks like, and Ken and Lima acknowledging that his trade value after this run is high enough that a Giannis deal could realistically center around him. The broader message heading into the offseason is that one brutal quote and one embarrassing series finale should not erase what this team actually accomplished getting further than they have since LeBron left.

Dan Gilbert wears many hats: NBA owner, entrepreneur, Detroit booster and Dad.  While building Rocket Companies – the $30 billion mortgage giant – and investing billions in the Motor City's 21st century development, he was a rare disease parent. Gilbert's oldest child, Nick, died in 2023 following a lifelong battle with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disease that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways anywhere in the body.  The most common type, NF1, affects approximately 1 in 2,500 births. Half of those patients develop learning and physical challenges.    Nick had a following among basketball fans. He represented the Cleveland Cavaliers at multiple NBA draft lotteries and proved something of a good luck charm for the team and the city.  Since his death, the Gilbert family have pledged millions to fund research initiatives in the hopes of finding a cure for NF.    Read more about the Gilbert Family Foundation's work here: https://gilbertfamilyfoundation.org/ Follow the high-impact research to develop treatments for neurofibromatosis type 1: https://www.nfxdetroit.org/     If you are a parent or caregiver seeking NF information: https://www.ctf.org/      Join us in advancing awareness and understanding of rare diseases. Ken also raves about Dan Gilbert bussing Cavs fans to Game 7 in Detroit, which turned into an all-time experience when the Cavs took over the arena in the fourth quarter and won by 31. On this pre-Thanksgiving episode of Daily Detroit, Norris Howard and I come to you in our Sunday sport-coated best fresh from a heavyweight fireside chat with Detroit's outgoing Mayor Mike Duggan and Rocket's Dan Gilbert. We react to a conversation that's a look into the future of Detroit and Michigan from two people shaping where we're headed next. We break down the biggest takeaways from the discussion, including why housing affordability tops Duggan's agenda as he runs for governor (as an independent) and why zoning reform and building more duplexes, triplexes, and other smaller-scale multi-family housing are absolutely crucial for Detroit. We get into the realities of market demand, population shifts, and why transit is still the other half of Detroit's comeback equation. Because whether it's chicken or egg, you need both people and transit to revitalize a city. Beyond the political stage, Norris and I swap thoughts on how local development impacts long-standing communities, and why the land value tax push in Lansing was such a key piece of the mayor's agenda. Then, we switch gears for a rapid-fire rundown of where to shop, eat, and support local business for Small Business Saturday across Southeast Michigan, from Merry in Midtown to the Rust Belt in Ferndale. Plus, some of our holiday traditions, why you shouldn't ring the bell at the Two Way Inn unless you're feeling extra generous, and why supporting our local spots matters more than ever. What if the way you see yourself is keeping you stuck? In this powerful episode of Path to Paradise, Dr. Alex Loyd and his son Harry introduce "The Four Dark Mirrors"—a framework for understanding why 80% of people struggle to reach their full potential. Research shows that if you think right, you win. If you think wrong, you lose. But what does "thinking right" actually mean, and how do you know if you're doing it? Harry delivers a philosophical masterclass on self-reflection, exploring two of the four dark mirrors that distort our identity: The Empty Pool (narcissistic self-worship) and The Cultural Mirror (deriving worth from others' opinions). Through references to Socratic dialogue, Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil," and Jesus's teaching in Luke 9, Harry explains why growth requires what he calls "psychological violence"—the willingness to die to your old self in order to become who you're meant to be. What You'll Discover: ✓ Why asking "What do we owe each other?" is the wrong question for personal growth ✓ The difference between being decent and being heroic (Kitty Genovese example) ✓ How The Empty Pool mirror keeps you trapped in self-centeredness ✓ Why The Cultural Mirror creates psychological instability even in close relationships ✓ How children's brains imprint cultural values (ages 0-9) and why maturity means questioning them ✓ The "banality of evil": How conformity leads to moral compromise ✓ Why having people dislike you might be a sign of growth ✓ How confidence both comes from truth AND leads you to truth ✓ The paradox of freedom: Why commitment destroys freedom but gives it meaning ✓ What Jesus really meant by "losing your life to find it" (Greek word: psyche) Key Topics Covered: The fundamental flaw in deriving identity from others' regard (lovers, friends, social media, community) Dan Gilbert's research: How expectations about things outside your control create chronic stress The neuroscience of social influence: How close relationships literally restructure your brain (Antonio Damasio) Why productive disagreement becomes impossible when your identity depends on others' approval How culture becomes "the empty pool writ large" through advertising, media, and conformity The two requirements for transformation: reflection and conviction Why "No, but I want to be willing" is enough to start with Practice of Paradise Update: The Founder's Special has closed with amazing early results. What if the things we avoid the most—like messing up, slowing down, being bored, or even facing our own death—are actually the gateways to lasting joy?Join Matt O'Neill and award-winning journalist Eric Weiner as they shatter everything you thought you knew about happiness. Eric, author of the New York Times bestseller "The Geography of Bliss" (now a Peacock docu-series), has mapped happiness across the globe from Bhutan to Iceland, uncovering the counterintuitive secrets that separate the world's happiest cultures from America's convenience-obsessed society. This isn't your typical happiness advice. You'll discover why failure is celebrated in Iceland, how boredom becomes bliss in Switzerland, why silence is sacred in Thailand, and the profound truth that happiness isn't personal—it's relational. Eric reveals why America, the wealthiest nation on Earth, doesn't even crack the top 20 in happiness rankings, and what we can learn from cultures that prioritize relationships over results.Whether you're caught in the convenience trap, struggling with the paradox of choice, or wondering why all your achievements haven't made you happier, this conversation will revolutionize your understanding of what true contentment looks like.0:00 Introduction1:06 What sent Eric on his global happiness quest2:56 Failure, silence, boredom, death6:02 Why happiness is relational, not personal8:58 The Thai teacher's wisdom12:18 How envy destroys happiness and why the Swiss hide wealth15:24 Why Iceland celebrates heroic failure19:46 The surprising statistics about happiness23:02 The experience machine thought experiment25:04 Why thinking about happiness makes you unhappy27:33 America's convenience trap destroys connection32:45 The power of putting effort without attachment to resultsResources Mentioned:Eric Weiner's books:
