Building Materials Industry | Building Materials and Structural Design Joe Bruno is an architect who specializes in residential and commercial. He has done a significant amount of projects for municipalities and school districts, and he involves himself in every facet of the process from conception through completion. Since Joe has a handle on engineering and execution on top of his specialization, he is constantly watching trends in the building materials industry. Recently, Joe has noticed an increase in new technologies being introduced to the market, providing him with new ways to solve architectural problems as he incorporates these technologies into his designs. Engineered Lumber The building materials industry is always coming out with new products, but in Joe’s eyes, the latest trend has made the greatest impact on the structural design. Open floor plans are in extremely high demand right now and they pose many new challenges for architects across the country. Engineered lumber has enabled architects to create sprawling open floorplans without using a forest of columns or other laborious techniques. It is stronger than sawed lumber and more fire-resistant, so Joe has been able to expand his offerings to clients at a better price. The Future of Building Materials in Architecture Continuing with the idea of price, Joe predicts the building materials industry will see a continuing trend of greater variety at a lower cost. This includes materials that have traditionally only been accessible to the rich, like granite countertops and other finishes. Window manufacturers will offer a wider array of options and some of them are only available because new materials can withstand the stresses of new designs. Either way, the goal is to select the right materials for each job. And with an increasing number of different options available to us, the entire design-build process continues to become more efficient. About Joe Bruno Joseph J. Bruno, AIA is an architect in private practice in Park Ridge, New Jersey. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 1983. His extensive experience includes the design of schools, commercial buildings, and residences. Since establishing his own practice in 2000 he has focused primarily on custom residential design. This aspect of architectural practice is particularly satisfying as he has the ability to connect one on one with his clients in the pursuit of creating their dream homes. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

For decades, Glenn Close has turned in one acclaimed performance after another, but Oscar has continually eluded her. At last year's Academy Awards, that nearly changed. Close narrowly lost the Best Actress statuette for her tour-de-force performance in The Wife. Although Close herself earned critical praise, the film itself fell beneath the radar, earning less than $10 million at the domestic box office. Today we take a closer look at what The Wife has to offer. Angela Betancourt, host of 5 Things with Angie B., joins us to discuss not only Close's magnetic turn in the Björn Runge-directed drama but also how it tackles the emotional complexity of a decades-long marriage. Listen in as we engage in a detailed breakdown of The Wife, its complicated family dynamic, the unsung supporting role (co-lead?) played by Jonathan Pryce and the implications of its divisive conclusion.  The Wife synopsis, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics: Directed by Berlin Silver Bear-winner Björn Runge, THE WIFE is adapted by Jane Anderson from the Meg Wolitzer novel of the same name. After nearly forty years of marriage, JOAN and JOE CASTLEMAN (Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce) are complements: Where Joe is brash, Joan is shy. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm, and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man’s Wife, keeping the household running smoothly, the adult children in close contact, and Joe’s pills dispensed on schedule. At times, a restless discontentment can be glimpsed beneath Joan’s smoothly decorous surface, but her natural dignity and keen sense of humor carry her through the rough spots. It’s 1992, and Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe’s literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950s, when she was a demure Smith student and he, her (married) creative writing teacher. The Wife interweaves the midcentury story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, thirty-plus years later—a lifetime’s shared compromises, secrets, betrayals, and genuine, mutual love. From 1958 to 1992 to our present vantage point of 2018, we observe Joan and Joe Castleman in the context of their times, and ours. Joe Jackson was born in Dallas, Texas into a musical family; his mother is a former professional clarinetist, and his father, Jim Jackson, a former trombonist with the Fort Worth Symphony, is today a renown recording engineer. Joe chose the trombone at age 12, and during his high school years was the recipient of three Down Beat Magazine “DeeBee” awards. Joe left UNT in 1990 to join the Maynard Ferguson Band. He spent a year with Ferguson, performing throughout the United States and in Europe. Interior designers know they have to be on Instagram and on Facebook and make sure all their pins look great on Pinterest. But LinkedIn is just a place to stick your résumé or look for your next hire, right? Wrong. LinkedIn can actually be a very fruitful networking platform if you put in the work and if you have a great strategy. And on today’s Wingnut Social podcast, we dig deep into how LinkedIn can pay off for interior designers. Darla and Natalie welcome Joe Apfelbaum, CEO of B2B marketing firm Ajax Union to the show today, and Joe is all about LinkedIn. Joe started Ajax seven years ago to use advanced technologies to help businesses with their internet marketing. But what he realized is that many companies don’t actually have a marketing strategy, and many are ignoring a goldmine in LinkedIn. Today Darla and Joe talk about why LinkedIn can pay off, and why it’s so often ignored. LinkedIn: The 24/7 networking party Darla tells Joe on this week’s show that she has 14,000 connections on LinkedIn, but she never really logs in. Joe draws the analogy of showing up to a networking party every day, but sitting in the corner and not talking to anyone. And this is actually most people’s problem with LinkedIn. It’s a very active platform, but few users are actually standing out by posting. Joe cites some stats from Microsoft about LinkedIn’s usage. He estimates there are about 500 million professionals on LinkedIn, and 40% of those professionals log in every day. So what’s the problem? Only a million people are actually posting on LinkedIn. If you can create a LinkedIn strategy for posting every day on the platform, you can truly distinguish yourself. And Joe lays out how to build that strategy on this week’s episode. Don’t be a spammer on LinkedIn On this week’s show, Joe staged a sort of LinkedIntervention with Darla, encouraging her to log onto the platform more often, and engage with the people there a lot more often. But direct messages on LinkedIn can be really sales-y and annoying, so Joe cautions that you need to have a direct message strategy. Part of that is genuinely wanting to reach out and connect with people with whom you could do business. You need to ensure that, when reaching out to people on LinkedIn, you’re not burdening or spamming them. So that means keep your messages short. People don’t spend more than seven seconds reading messages. Get straight to the point, offer them actual value, and don’t sell anyone anything ever. Try to build an actual relationship with them. EP183: Hidden Health Care Costs With Joe Murad, President and CEO of PokitDok

Relentless Health Value

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2018 32:10

I was thinking about this when reading that Forbes article that came out the other day that 44% of Americans skip doctor visits or medical care due to cost. Here's my point: There could be 2 prongs to this. One of them is that the costs are too high. And yep, they are. Even more distressing when you consider that only a dime on every dollar spent on health care goes to the physician or nurse or person actually providing the care. So much is chewed up by invisible middle people adding questionable value to patient care. But here's another prong that you might not have thought of. I remember in one of my marketing classes ages ago the case study about classified ads. Classified ads that listed the price were something like 50% more successful than those that did not. If there's no price, consumers just assume the price is too high. Consumers are consumers whether they're buying a used lawnmower or medical care, and they simply assume the cost is too high when the price tag is turned under. Buying something and being obligated to pay for it even if you don't know what you're getting yourself into... that's a risk that might be a factor in that 44% not bothering to show up for care they need. Today, I speak about the hidden costs and frictions in health care with Joe Murad, President and CEO of PokitDok. Costs and frictions that make being a health care consumer a less than optimal experience. Joe most recently served as Managing Director and Head of Individual Exchange Solutions for Willis Towers Watson where he was responsible for the largest private health insurance exchange. Prior to WTW, Joe was the COO and a founding team member of Extend Health, Inc. from its inception until its $435MM sale to Towers Watson in 2012. Before Extend Health, Joe was part of the initial team at eHealth (IPO: EHTH) where he served as the Director of Business Development and was instrumental in building the company's early overall success. Before eHealth, Joe held numerous market facing roles at Informix Software, Inc. Have you ever heard the phrase “content is king”? It’s a phrase that is sold to creatives the world over encouraging them to continue to put their best work. We’re told that if we do, sooner or later, we’ll catch our break and get discovered. The thing is, it’s not enough. Sure we need to be putting out quality work, but our work alone, no matter how good it is, will rarely get us where we want to go. Joe Simon has been working as a filmmaker and DP for 20 years. He transitioned from starting out as a professional BMX rider and filmmaker focusing on action sports, to a successful and in demand wedding film company, and then again transitioned into a commercial and corporate film brand. He now travels the world shooting TV shows for networks like CBS and CNN, and workign with brands such as Norwegian Cruise Line, TD Ameritrade, Oakley, and many, many others. Today, Joe shares how even after 10 years working in film, when he started his commercial brand The Delivery Guys, he still fell victim to the creative bias, and quickly found out that great work alone wasn’t enough to attract the clients he wanted to work with. He tells us how you should be getting your work out to the right people to see, how to build a killer reel by utilizing your current jobs, and a whole bunch more. If you’re looking for advice from someone who’s lived it, Joe is the guy. In this episode: • How to handle hiring freelance editors to get the best results • Joe’s approach to capturing extra content on your current shoots and repurposing it to pitch to corporate and commercial clients • The ups and downs of travel jobs and how to prepare for them • Where Joe would begin if he were starting over again today • How to effectively market your work and get the right people to see it Quotes: “The Delivery Men was created off of b-roll content from weddings.” [18:27] “I think in general you just have to really hustle a lot, and to get work, it’s hard. When I first launched this company in 2012, I built the website and built the reel, and I thought that work would just show up, and it didn’t. It was a realization that no one knows who we are in this world, and so really having to get out and hit the street and build a network.” [25:00] “You have to have a network first before you can just get people to watch something.” [28:29]

When Chipotle Mexican Grill tapped Joe Stupp to be Head of Social Media, the company chose the person with the most relevant experience possible. In fact, Joe was the restaurant manager of the very first Chipotle. Now nearly 1,800 restaurants strong, Chipotle still approaches social media in an unconventional style that is perhaps befitting a much smaller brand – with just a handful of people who know every facet of the business intimately, and who love talking with customers. They answer all sorts of questions, from the basic – “Where does your chicken come from?” – to the absurd – “What kind of toilet paper do you use in the bathroom?” – and all with a virtual smile. Or perhaps it’s a wink? Joe spent some time with me and Dan Moriarty for Episode 3 of the Focus on Customer Service Podcast. Some of the most quotable moments of this episode include: • “We don’t really view it as customer service, but more like we’re just conversing with people.” • “Being response to our customers… just comes naturally to us.” • On social media response time: “We have zero goals around that...We do not track it.
