It's Friday, June 27th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Court acquits Christian man of blasphemy against Islam On June 25th, the Pakistani Supreme Court ordered the acquittal of an elderly Christian man on death row for 23 years on a blasphemy against Islam conviction, reports Morning Star News. A three-judge bench acquitted Anwar Kenneth, age 72, of the blasphemy allegations. His attorney, Rana Hameed, himself a Muslim, explained that a person of unsound mind could not be held liable for such a crime. He added that this case highlights the plight of dozens of other blasphemy prisoners who are also suffering from mental health challenges, yet their cases have been pending for years. Defense Secretary Hegseth defends success of bombing Iran Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended President Trump's characterization that the Iranian nuclear sites were obliterated. HEGSETH: “President Trump directed the most complex and secretive military operation in history. And it was a resounding success, resulting in a cease fire agreement and the end of the 12 Day War. “There's been a lot of discussion about what happened and what didn't happen. Step back for a second. Because of decisive military action, President Trump created the conditions to end the war, decimating, choose your word, obliterating, destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities.” At a press conference at the NATO Summit in The Hague, Netherlands on June 25th, Secretary Hegseth added this. HEGSETH: “There's a reason the President calls out fake news for what it is. These pilots, these refuelers, these fighters, these air defenders -- the skill and the courage it took to go into enemy territory, flying 36 hours, on behalf of the American people and the world to take out a nuclear program is beyond what anyone in this audience can fathom. “And then, the instinct of CNN, the instinct of The New York Times is to try to find a way to spin it for their own political reasons, to try to hurt President Trump or our country. They don't care what the troops think. They don't care what the world thinks. They want to spin it to try to make him look bad based on a leak. “What do leakers do? They have agendas. And what do they do? Do they share the whole information, or just the part that they want to introduce? And when they introduce that preliminary report, that's deemed to be a low assessment, you know, a low assessment means low confidence in the data in that report. “And why is there low confidence? Because all of the evidence of what was just bombed by twelve 30,000-pound bombs is buried under a mountain, devastated and obliterated. So, if you want to make an assessment of what happened at Fordow, you better get a big shovel and go really deep, because Iran's nuclear program is obliterated. “Somebody, somewhere is trying to leak something to say, ‘Oh, with low confidence, we think maybe it's moderate.' Those that dropped the bombs precisely in the right place know exactly what happened when that exploded. And you know who else knows? Iran! “That's why they came to the table right away because their nuclear capabilities have been set back beyond what they thought were possible because of the courage of a Commander-in-Chief who led our troops, despite what the fake news wants to say.” Supreme Court rules South Carolina can defund Planned Parenthood In a 6-3 decision yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that South Carolina has the right to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business, reports LifeNews. The pro-life state wants to be able to block taxpayer funding for the abortion business under Medicaid, but the abortion company sued to block that action. The Supreme Court ruled that South Carolina has the power to block funding. In the decision, written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, the Supreme Court said Medicaid laws do not give individuals the right to bring federal lawsuits against states. The high court's ruling means that the state can direct Medicaid funding—funds intended to help low-income individuals obtain necessary medical assistance—to comprehensive health care rather than entities that exist primarily to perform abortions. South Carolina Republican Governor Henry McMaster issued executive orders barring the pro-abortion organization from receiving reimbursements for non-abortion services like cancer screenings, STD testing, and contraception -- arguing that the funding just frees the abortion business to spend funds killing babies. Governor McMaster is living up to the command of Proverbs 31:8 which says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt weighed in. LEAVITT: “As for the Supreme Court ruling, the President has always maintained that Americans should not be forced to violate their conscience and their religious liberty by having their tax dollars fund abortions, and we're glad the Supreme Court ruled on that side.” Two who stopped gunman at Michigan church hailed as heroes Two members of CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan are being hailed as heroes for helping to stop a gunman who attempted to carry out a mass shooting during the church's worship service this past Sunday, reports the Christian Post. The men, Deacon Richard Pryor and Ron Amann, a member of the church's security team, are being celebrated for their efforts in stopping 31-year-old Brian Browning. According to the police report cited by the Detroit Free Press, Browning, the gunman, was dressed in camouflage clothing and a tactical vest as he approached the church entrance armed with an AR-15-style rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition. He opened fire at the church shortly after 11:00am. Steven Lewellyn, a fellow church member, wrote, "Richard was in the parking lot and saw the shooter walking towards the door. In a moment of quick thinking and incredible bravery, Richard sped towards the man, hitting him with his truck and giving armed security crucial extra seconds to get to the scene and prevent further harm." The gunman shot multiple rounds into the truck, but thankfully did not hurt Richard Pryor, who was running late for church that morning. Providentially, just three days before the shooting, Ron Amann told WXYZ that he was one of three members of the church's safety team who attended training at Peacemakers Shooting Range. AMANN: “When we formed this team, I just knew it was my calling to protect my family and my church family.” Amann described what he heard last Sunday. AMANN: "Popping, a pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop noise that I couldn't quite identify. It stopped. I heard it again, and probably within a few seconds after that, someone came running in the back of the sanctuary and said, there's a shooter out there.” After he sent his family to safety, he ran toward the shooting. AMANN: "He [shooter] was sitting on the ground with a rifle, and he was sitting away from me, so he turned to make a sweep of the glass with his gun and just held the trigger and shot through. "He just started spraying bullets into the lobby, went through the glass, shattered it, and then, that's when it caught my leg and spun me around.” Another member of the church's safety team, Jay Trombley, fatally shot Browning. Amann is convinced that God prepared them for that moment. AMANN: “Being a person of faith and having a relationship with God, I believe He orchestrated all of the preparations and prepared us exactly for what we encountered.” Kate Dunphy, the organizer of the GoFundMe campaign for the church security volunteer who was shot in the leg, wrote, "Ron's tibia was shattered and required extensive surgery to place a rod at the leg injury. This injury will have approximately 3-5 months of physical recovery and rehabilitation. God spared Ron's life and was mighty in His protection over the security team and congregation.” She cited Psalm 37:23-24 which says, “The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when He delights in His way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.” I want to hear from children under the age of 18 I would love to share 3 emails on Monday, June 30th from kids between the ages of 5 and 17 who listen to The Worldview. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Year C – 7th Sunday after Epiphany Pastor Megan Floyd February 23, 2025 Grace and peace to you from God, our Creator, and from our savior, Jesus Christ, who longs for us to be consumed by love. Amen. *** This passage is remarkably beautiful for the way it draws us into Christ's vision of justice… and of course… love. But… that doesn't make it easy. It's a well-known passage… love your enemies… turn the other cheek,… but it often misrepresents Christians as people who will and should continue to subject themselves to abuse. It is definitely not that. I can remember, even as a child, I would hear this and think… nope… no thanks… if someone slaps me and I turn the other cheek, then I'll get slapped twice. No, thank you. What I have since learned is that this passage is really about justice, and holding others accountable for their abuse and harm… but doing so in a non-violent and loving way. Retaliation and violence cannot drive out evil… only love can do that. After all… even those who perpetrate harm against their neighbor, or community, or even the whole country… even those people are loved by God, who desire for their hearts to be remolded by love. Still doesn't make it easy. *** This passage is a continuation of the sermon on the plain that we got into last week… the blessings and woes… Blessed are the poor and hungry… blessed are the powerless Woe to you who are rich and full… woe to you who are well thought of according to the world's standards. …But I say to you that listen, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. We must read this command to love our enemies through the lens of Jesus' flip of all we understand about the world… and about who is blessed and who is issued a warning. He says, ‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged.' To cast judgment on another person is to view them, for whatever reason, as unworthy of God's gifts… to consider them as less than the beloved child of God that they are. Jesus issues blessings and woes, and a call to love our enemies… as a way to call us into a more just way of living that honors all people, regardless of status or any of our human categories. And this is huge for us in our modern American culture, but it's arguably a bigger deal for those first disciples… because the culture that Jesus is preaching in is an honor-shame culture. It's not quite the same way here and now… but for them… To be abused was a cause for shame, but to respond the way Jesus suggests shines a light on the abuse, and holds the perpetrator accountable for their wrongful actions… To respond the way Jesus suggests is to demand justice and dignity. He says… if anyone takes away your coat, do not withhold even your shirt. In that culture, to be naked was shameful, but to be someone who caused another to be naked was more shameful. Jesus said, if anyone strikes you on the cheek – and in Matthew, he specifies, strikes you on the right cheek, offer the other. Well, most people are right-handed, so to strike someone on the right cheek would mean they back-handed them… This was how someone would strike a slave or someone so low in status that the abuser would not sully the palm of their hand. But if you then offer the other cheek for them to strike, it would require an open hand, …In doing that, they are demanding their abuser face what they did and strike them as an equal… thus throwing off the shame and exposing wrongful violence. If someone takes your goods… stealing from you… Jesus said, do not ask for them back, it is then considered a gift. The shame of being a victim is turned into honor for one who is generous. And again… it exposes the wrongful theft. Jesus is not preaching suggestions for passive weakness… not at all… To respond this way takes courage, and commitment to the way of Christ and strength in knowing that calling others back into right relationship brings healing to whole communities. Jesus is offering a way to level out power imbalance and call attention to injustice. Jesus is offering a way for us to create space for a pause… an examination of actions, a call to accountability… space for confession… forgiveness… and reconciliation. Jesus is calling us to follow a way that does not tolerate evil, but instead, it exposes the evil actions and invites the perpetrator back into right relationship with their community… using love. God does not want us to destroy our enemies… God wants us to love them. *** Earlier this week, our siblings in Christ at St. Luke's ELCA church in Park Ridge, Illinois, experienced some of this world's hatred and abuse. Vandals destroyed their sign, which featured the logo for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – the ELCA – and the logo for Reconciling in Christ, which, as we know, stands for justice and inclusion of our LGBTQ+ siblings. While it may have been a random act of disrespect… which was carried out in two separate acts… we cannot ignore that our Lutheran witness and commitment to standing with the vulnerable and marginalized has recently been nationally vilified… …and our ELCA siblings across this country are feeling the effects of that from those who are motivated to intimidate based on perceived orders from their leaders. As I read about this church, I was deeply encouraged that, in the face of harm, they are leaning into Jesus' command to love others, to be welcoming to all, and to bear witness to the Gospel. Their pastor wrote, “In a world increasingly marked by division and fear, we are called to stand firm in the radical grace of Jesus. If this was meant to discourage us, let it do the opposite. Let it strengthen our resolve to be a beacon of hope, justice, and love. We will continue to proclaim love of neighbor through word and deed, showing with our lives that love is stronger than fear.” *** Friends… this is what it looks like… to turn the other cheek. To pause… and take a breath… to call for accountability and leave room for confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation. This is what it looks like to follow in the way of Christ, to commit to love, to stand for justice, and to trust in the kind of costly grace that calls us into action. To not let the hardness of the world… harden our hearts against our enemies… or our neighbors. And no… it is not easy. And yes… there is risk. Which is why we cannot… and do not… accomplish this work on our own. It is only possible with the strength of the bonds that form within a community that follows the way of Christ together… And, most importantly, it is only possible by the will of God, who has called us to this path… and promises to accompany and guide us, to comfort us in our grief, and to transform our hearts with love. Our God, who loves us beyond measure, knows that if we hold onto fear… bitterness… suspicion… and hatred… we will be overcome… consumed by that hatred. So let us lay all that down at the foot of the cross… and in doing so, know that we cast a holy light… a loving light… onto the injustice of our world… …and, with strength that can only come from God… let us come together to call those who perpetuate evil and violence… back into love…. Let us call them back into just relationships… offering healing for our communities… and lives transformed by grace. Jesus' sermon on the plain teaches us that what God wants for us… what Christ longs for… is for us to be consumed by mercy and compassion… consumed by love, and for that love to reshape the world. And so… though it is not easy… let us, together, love our enemies and pray for those who cause harm. Amen.

This Day in Legal History: Birth of NixonOn January 9, 1913, Richard Milhous Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, a man destined to leave a complicated and indelible mark on American history. Nixon is perhaps the most paradoxical of U.S. presidents—on one hand, he created the Environmental Protection Agency, championed detente with the Soviet Union, and opened diplomatic relations with China. On the other hand, the man also gave us Watergate, wiretapping, enemies lists, and enough shady political machinations to keep conspiracy theorists busy for decades.Nixon's "greatest hits" of questionable decisions include the secret bombing of Cambodia, illegally expanding the Vietnam War while publicly claiming to wind it down, and the sabotage of peace talks to ensure his election in 1968. Let's not forget his role in orchestrating the War on Drugs, a policy whose consequences are still felt today, particularly in communities of color. And, of course, he made liberal use of “plausible deniability,” whether it was about spying on political opponents or using government resources for personal vendettas. While Nixon may have soothed the environment by founding the EPA, he simultaneously polluted the political landscape, cementing cynicism in American politics for a generation. If you're struggling to reconcile his good deeds with his transgressions, don't worry—you're not alone. Historians, politicians, and everyday Americans have been wrestling with the Nixon conundrum for decades. Was he a political genius or a paranoid megalomaniac? Probably both, in addition to being a raging narcissist and, by all accounts, a deeply unpleasant man. His favorite breakfast? Cottage cheese with ketchup – or black pepper if he was feeling spicy. On this day in legal history, we remember Richard Nixon—a … man. He would have been 112 had a blood clot not cut him down as he prepared dinner in his Park Ridge, New Jersey home in 1994. The U.S. Justice Department announced that it will not publicly release Special Counsel Jack Smith's full report on Donald Trump's handling of classified records, citing ongoing prosecutions against two Trump associates, Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira. While the report's section addressing Trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election will be made public, the documents-related portion will remain accessible only to specific members of Congress responsible for oversight.Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed that Smith completed a two-volume report on Trump, with the Justice Department stating that limited disclosure would balance public interest with protecting the legal rights of Nauta and De Oliveira. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon temporarily blocked the release of the report upon a request by the two defendants.Previously, Trump was charged with illegally retaining classified records and obstructing government efforts to retrieve them, as well as attempting to interfere with the certification of President Joe Biden's election victory. However, the department dismissed these charges after Trump's November election, adhering to its policy against prosecuting a sitting president.Despite these dismissals, prosecutors are seeking to revive the obstruction case against Nauta and De Oliveira, who have pleaded not guilty. The Justice Department emphasized that its actions comply with federal regulations requiring a final report from special counsel investigations.US Justice Dept will not publicly release all of special counsel report on TrumpPresident-elect Donald Trump has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to halt his sentencing in a New York criminal case involving hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. In a filing made public on Wednesday, his lawyers argued that further proceedings in the Manhattan state court would harm the presidency and federal government operations, citing presidential immunity. The New York appeals court recently rejected Trump's effort to delay sentencing, scheduled for Friday. His legal team has requested similar emergency relief from both the Supreme Court and New York's highest court. The Supreme Court has asked prosecutors to respond by Thursday, suggesting a swift decision is likely.Trump was convicted of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 payment by his former attorney Michael Cohen to Daniels before the 2016 election. He denies any wrongdoing or the alleged sexual encounter with Daniels. His sentencing judge indicated Trump would likely face an unconditional discharge, leaving a judgment of guilt on record but imposing no jail time, fines, or probation.Trump's lawyers contend the case violates principles of presidential immunity established by a Supreme Court ruling granting former presidents broad protection from prosecution for official acts. They argue this immunity applies during the transitional period between his election and inauguration. Manhattan prosecutors have vowed to respond to Trump's request, marking the latest development in a historic case that made Trump the first U.S. president to be criminally convicted.Trump asks Supreme Court to halt sentencing in New York hush money case | ReutersZwillGen, a law firm specializing in technology and privacy law, has expanded into artificial intelligence with the acquisition of Luminos.Law, a Washington, D.C.-based firm focused on AI and analytics risk. The United States is grappling with a crisis of orphaned and uncapped oil wells—sites with no accountable owner and no proper closure. These wells pose significant environmental and public health risks, leaking methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and contaminating groundwater. Estimates suggest there are between 310,000 and 800,000 undocumented orphan wells, with over 120,000 already identified as uncapped. Addressing this problem is critical, but the cost—ranging from tens of thousands to millions of dollars per well—is increasingly falling on taxpayers. The root of this issue lies in systemic regulatory failures and cost-shifting practices within the oil and gas industry. Older wells are often sold to smaller operators who lack the resources to maintain or cap them. When these operators go bankrupt, liabilities are abandoned. Bonding requirements meant to ensure cleanup funds are woefully inadequate, typically covering less than 2% of the actual cost.To tackle this crisis, I propose an Environmental Liability Tax (ELT) on oil and gas extraction. Levied per barrel, this tax would ensure that cleanup costs are collected upfront, placing the financial responsibility on the companies benefiting economically from the wells. Funds from the ELT could be held in state or federal trusts dedicated to plugging orphaned wells and restoring lands. The ELT could also incentivize better practices by offering tax credits to companies proactively addressing environmental risks. By taxing extraction rather than chasing bankrupt operators, the ELT would create a sustainable, enforceable funding mechanism to address this growing environmental liability. As the U.S. approaches peak oil, the time for systemic reform is now—before the cleanup bill comes due with no one left to pay.Towards An Environmental Liability Tax For Oil And Gas Wells This is a public episode. In today's episode we're joined by Danielle Oyasu, the CEO and Founder of Beautifully New, which is a comprehensive medical spa in Park Ridge, IL. Danielle's business and mission is about so much more than aesthetics—she really cares about bringing wellness to the forefront of her business. Danielle first tried hormone replacement therapy with testosterone several years ago. After experiencing her first hot flash and other symptoms of menopause, she decided it was time to commit. At the time it was, and in many ways still is, an important tool that's clouded by misjudgment. All women will go through menopause, but that doesn't mean we have to suffer with it. Most of the women that come to Danielle's med spa that end up on testosterone replacement start the conversation themselves. Prior to this, Danielle was referring her clients to another person—but this person had ever-increasing limited availability, so she identified the opportunity to start offering it to her clients directly. Women, especially moms, deserve to take time for themselves, yet they rarely do. Moms often take on the bulk of the mental load when parenting, and this can cause tension in a relationship. Danielle shares how she navigated this in her own life early in her career, and also how she's preparing to transition to having a child-free home with her husband. As an entrepreneur, one of the biggest takeaways Danielle has had is that it's not about what's best for her or anyone else on the team. What it really comes down to is what's best for the business. Having systems and procedures in place helps make this much clearer, especially when difficult situations arise. In late December of 1978, 15-year-old Larry Goodman disappeared from Park Ridge, New Jersey. His mother left home that day to go shopping and asked Larry if he would like to go along with her, but he declined. When she arrived home, Larry was gone. His mother reported that he had left home wearing a red flannel shirt, jeans, a denim jacket, sneakers and had $30 in his pocket. Investigators spoke to the teen's friends, teachers, and parents, but no one knew where he may have gone. Larry was a good student, and there didn't appear to be anything in his life to run from. There were articles in the local paper detailing Larry's mysterious disappearance. The local police stated they had run down every lead and hoped to appeal to the public for information. Everyone was shocked when Larry reappeared 27 days later on his 16th birthday. Larry told his mother he had been hundreds of miles away in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The police closed the case now that he was home safe, but that wouldn't last long. Soon, Larry was gone again. Everyone assumed he had run away from home again and would return soon. This time, there were no articles in the newspaper about Larry Goodman. He never called or came home, and 45 years later, Larry's case remains unsolved. If you have any information about the disappearance of Larry Goodman, please contact the Park Ridge Police Department at (201) 391-5401 or the New Jersey State Police Missing Persons Unit at (609) 882-2000.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
