Following the sudden passing of Diego Maradona, we decided we had to pay tribute to the Argentina legend. Ste McGovern and Colm Boohig caught up to discuss our reaction to his passing, why he avoided the sad fate of George Best, look at the problematic side of a “raging dickhead”, and why the England game in 1986 defined his career. We also revisited the podcast we recorded about Maradona in 2018 in the aftermath of his antics at the World Cup in Russia, so you can listen to that in the second half of this episode. Or not. I’m not the boss of you. RIP Diego, we’ll miss you.
There were mixed emotions on the show this week as the two lads experienced wildly differing fortunes with their fantasy teams. On the latest episode of The Fantasy Faithful podcast, Ste McGovern and Dara Curran look back at a week that featured no Mo Salah but plenty of other high-scoring midfielders in Fantasy Premier League, namely Bruno Fernandes and Heung-min Son. There's a few regrets to recount from FPL gameweek 9, Dara finally changes his mind on Patrick Bamford, we drag Manchester City's lacklustre attack over the hot coals and fawn over Harry Kane, despite the fact he didn't have a shot on Saturday. We also give our captain's picks, potential transfers, differentials going under the radar, the statistics that caught our eye, and our guaranteed Lock of the Week for gameweek 10 (spoiler: they're playing Fulham this weekend). The latest inductee into the prestigious and totally legitimate 90's Football Hall of Fame is Leicester City legend Muzzy Izzet. Possessing one of the all-time great footballer names in Premier League history, Izzet was a key member of that romantic Leicester team of the nineties that won two League Cups and punched well above their weight in the top-flight. Long before the Foxes won the Premier League title, this was a true golden age for the East Midlands outfit and Izzet was their star midfielder. The London-born Turkish international was a hard-working number 10 with a penchant for wonder goals. As Stephen Tudor remarks on the podcast, Izzet was "a fucking brilliant footballer", but he was also "a right little bastard". On the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern is joined by Peter Henry and the other Ste to chat about why we loved watching Izzet so much, his finest goals for Leicester, and why he never moved to a bigger club. We also discuss his unusual initiation with the Turkish national team, the most stylish managers in the Premier League, and reminisce on managers who used to smoke in the dugout. The latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame is Crystal Palace cult hero Attilio Lombardo. The Italian was one of a number of exotic big name signings that middling and lower Premier League teams managed to attract to English football with the promise of money, but his arrival still confounds to this day. Lombardo was a serial winner with Sampdoria and Juventus before arriving in south London in 1997, having won multiple league titles, the Champions League and played in seven European finals. A player clearly still with much to offer at 31 years of age, he wowed the Selhurst Park faithful with his majestic skill and effortless style for a bizarre 18 month spell with the Eagles. Football writer Ste Tudor joined host Ste McGovern and Peter Henry on the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast to discuss Lombardo's fascinating career, why he made such a weird tangent in his career, and the strange circumstances behind him becoming Palace's caretaker manager in the middle of the season. In the latest episode of The Fantasy Faithful podcast, presenter Ste McGovern was joined by Mark Farrelly of Balls.ie to talk about captain's picks, differentials, and potential transfers for gameweek 5. Ex-Chelsea midfielder and notorious scrapper Dennis Wise is the latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame. The pint-sized Englishman spent the entirety of the decade at Stamford Bridge, where he won multiple honours including the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup, the FA Cup and the League Cup, making him the club's second most successful captain behind John Terry. The Kensington native, who was also a member of the infamous 'Crazy Gang' at Wimbledon in the late eighties, had a reputation for being a shithouse as well, however, for his willingness to lunge into tackles and get involved in fights. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern and Peter Henry are once again joined by Ste Tudor to discuss Wise's penchant for violence, pinching Nicky Butt's crown jewels, grabbing John Terry by the neck and attacking Vinnie Jones while driving. The latest entrant in to the 90's Football Hall of Fame is Duncan Ferguson, the former Everton striker who was infamous for his physicality and penchant for violence on the pitch. An FA Cup winner in 1995, the Scot got into many scrapes and fights in the years, and is one of very few footballers to have been jailed for an incident on the field. But he was a quality footballer too who was as lethal in the air as he was with his fists, and scored a few crackers with his feet as well. Freelance football writer Ste Tudor joined Ste McGovern and Peter Henry on the latest episode to discuss Ferguson's career, what made him so terrifying to play against, our favourite violent flashes of his, and why his identity is so intertwined with Everton. The latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame is Manchester City cult hero Uwe Rosler. In this episode of the 90's football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern is joined by Peter Henry and freelance football writer and Man City supporter Ste Tudor to discuss Rosler's career, why he's so highly regarded among the City faithful to this day, and his famous goals against Manchester United. We also discuss the differences between supporting City back then and now, the mullet he once sported on his now bald head, and the famous t-shirt that claimed his grandad bombed Old Trafford. The latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame is Nottingham Forest icon Stuart Pearce. The combative full-back rose from the depths of non-league football to make it as a professional at the highest level, turning out for Forest for over a decade, experiencing the highs of League Cup success and the low of being relegated in Brian Clough's final season. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern is joined by Peter and Ant to discuss his long career in the Premier League and for England, his no-nonsense style of play, and his penchant for scoring thunderous free-kicks. Sheffield Wednesday icon Benito Carbone is the latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame. Affectionately known as 'Benny', the Italian playmaker arrived at Wednesday from Internazionale in 1997 and a plate of the driest-looking pasta was immediately thrust into his face for a misguided photo shoot with then manager David Pleat. Carbone spent three years in Yorkshire where he scored a bundle of golazos and created some iconic memories at Hillsborough, although he frustrated many with his inconsistency. The number 8 then went on to play for a number of mid-table and struggling English clubs, including Aston Villa, Bradford City, Derby County and Middlesbrough. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern and Peter Henry are joined by freelance football writer Stephen Tudor to discuss the alice-banded magician's career in the Premier League, how he lived up to the fancy dan foreigner stereotype, and his penchant for scoring outrageous goals. We also chat about his Masters career, petulant temperament, devilish good looks, love of hard-boiled sweets, and that photo of him and Paolo Di Canio with a pizza. Peter Schmeichel may well be the greatest goalkeeper to have ever played the game of football, but he also wasn't very well liked by many of his peers. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern and Peter Henry are joined by football writer David Sneyd to discuss the Great Dane's glorious career with Manchester United, his overbearing arrogance, unique size, and why he only made the PFA Team of the Year once despite being the very best. Paul McGrath was a football legend Manchester United, Aston Villa and Ireland during the eighties and nineties. The Irishman, who could perform excellently in almost any position that a manager asked him to, was a star performer at two World Cups, an FA Cup winner, won two League Cups and was named the PFA Player of the Year in 1993. And he achieved all this while battling personal demons and persistent knee problems. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame show, Ste McGovern and Peter Henry were joined by freelance football writer David Sneyd to discuss McGrath's legacy in Irish football, his alcoholism, and why he is so beloved by absolutely everyone. There's also chat about his upbringing in an orphanage in Dublin, how Alex Ferguson almost made him retire early, and debate whether he's the best all-rounder Ireland has ever produced. Just like the bus, you wait ages for a Nostalgia Ultras podcast and two come along in quick succession. Well, quick for us anyway. This is a special edition of the podcast, as it signals the return of the original trio: Ste McGovern, Colm Boohig and the immaculate emigrant himself, Conor Clancy. In celebration of the return of The Artist Formerly Known As Concalcio, we've decided to talk about his favourite team (other than the mighty Bray Wanderers, obviously) Atalanta and Italian football culture, his raison d'etre. We ask Conor how he even began supporting this provincial club from Bergamo, what makes it so special, the reasons for their recent surge these past few seasons, what makes Italian football good (and bad), why it's different from British and Irish football, and the worst type of fans in the country he now calls home. Yeah, this basically turned into an AMA with Conor. We also discuss the four players that mean something to us, Colm's adoration of the "high octane Lee Trundle", otherwise known as Ronaldinho, classic football boots, retro video games and Ludo.

Mark Hughes was one of the greatest players to put on the number 10 shirt for Manchester United, winning multiple league titles and cups and scoring twice in a European final - but is the Welsh legend one of the most underappreciated players of his time? In the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame show, we examine why he's not considered an icon of the game like some of his former teammates, his knack for spectacular volleys, greatest moments, why it didn't work out for him at Barcelona, how he transformed his playing style as he got older, and why he became such a miserable manager. Georgi Kinkladze was one of the most exciting players of the 90's. He was a marvellous dribbler who scored some delightfully exquisite goals during his three year stay at Man City. While he might be a cult hero with fans, 'Kinky' was also coach's nightmare - he had more talent than anyone else, but lacked tactical discipline, didn't possess particularly impressive physical attributes and was a number 10 when 4-4-2 reigned supreme. In the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame show, we ponder whether or not Kinkladze was actually any good or just a flash in the pan. There has never been a footballer like Julian Dicks - a hard-as-nails bastard, set piece specialist with a peach of a left foot who played at full-back. And we'll never see another like him again, not at the highest levels of the game anyway. Dicks was a West Ham United legend in the nineties, helping the London outfit reach the Premier League and creating some iconic memories at Upton Park. The Bristol-born defender was a tough nut who got into his fair share of scraps, but he also scored some cracking goals during his career, becoming the club's joint-18th all-time goalscorer during his career. "The Hammer From Hell" had an ill-fated move to Liverpool in 1993 and an England call-up was always just out of reach, so in this episode of the podcast we ponder whether he reached his full potential as a footballer, what made him so unique as a player, and why he's the quintessential Brit. The former Newcastle United attacker arrived in the north east during a snowstorm in February 1996 wearing a fur coat just as the Magpies' title charge was about to come off the rails. In the third episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame, we talk about his hypnotizing style of play, his famous performances against Liverpool and Barcelona, narco-football in his native Colombia, why he snubbed Darlington, and his love affair with guns. Andrei Kanchelskis arrived to the Premier League in 1991 as a complete unknown, but left as a bit of a legend, wowing English crowds with his speed, ability and sunny demeanour. In the first episode of our new podcast - The 90's Football Hall of Fame - we delve into the Soviet winger's career at Man United and Everton, why he's such a typical 90's player (but at the same time, not), the strange circumstances surrounding his Old Trafford exit, and just how much fun he would be on a night out. At the end of the show, host Ste McGovern, Peter Henry and Ant Kelly vote on whether the Ukrainian is worthy of induction to our HOF, partake in a 90's quiz, and reveal our 90's Cult Hero of the week. What was the greatest title race of all time? Was it 1996 when Manchester United and Newcastle United went head to head? Perhaps it was Arsenal overcoming an 11 point deficit in 1998 to win their first league title under Arsene Wenger? Or maybe it was Liverpool slipping up to Manchester City in 2014? In light of the insanely close battle between Liverpool and City for this year's title, Ste McGovern, Peter Henry and Maurice Brosnan discuss some of the most entertaining, thrilling and dramatic title races over the years. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at Nostalgia Ultras! To celebrate our first year as a podcast and somehow reaching 25 episodes, Ste McGovern and Colm Boohig bring you the first annual Christmas Selection Box. Rather than focus on one subject as we usually do, we talked about a number of things for which we didn't have to do any research, and for that, we are truly grateful this holiday season. We each revealed our favourite Irish footballers of the Premier League era, talked about Ireland's footballing diaspora, our favourite sports books of the year, some choice moments from our first few months in podcasting, and gave our unpopular opinions. Intro: Dead Trees by The Shaker Hymn Outro: Inter Bells by FC Internazionale
Few men have had such a demonstrable effect on British football in the past thirty years as Eric Cantona did during his time in England. Ste McGovern and Colm Boohig discuss why this is so, his complex and often contradictory nature, and how that was reflected in his style of football.
As ancient as it was lovable, the old Lansdowne Road stadium was home for Irish football fans. It was far from perfect, but it was the place where many a famous sporting memory was made before being demoilshed. Ste McGovern, Colm Boohig and Peter Henry of Football Faithful, remember the old ground, its special qualities, and some of the best moments that it featured.
How did Atletico Madrid, a club eternally in the shadow of their city rivals, win LaLiga and reach two Champions League finals? Euan McTear, author of Hijacking LaLiga, talks to our host Ste McGovern about the significance of Atleti's league title in 2014, why they should have five Champions League titles instead of Bayern Munich, and how they broke the Spanish football duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Brian Kerr is one of the most influential figures in Irish football, producing some of the country's best talent as the FAI's youth manager in the nineties. Yet, he's not only out in the cold from the game, but he also divides opinion among football fans in Ireland. Some see Kerr as a legend, others as a jackeen fool.
