Welcome to the End of the Season, and to the Wyness Shuffle's annual end of season podcast. This year's edition: Survivor Series. Join pod regulars Andrew Moffat, Stevie Riley, Sandy Sutherland, Lee Tarling, and Andrew Young as they dissect the last two most enjoyable games of The ICT Rollercoaster of ICT Rollercoasters of a season; take a look at what could be ahead for ICT off the pitch, discuss the monumental efforts of Scott Kellacher and Billy McKay; debate the percentage of Skol lager, where to purchase an inflatable camel, if anyone can actually remember the Montrose game; and finally chat to two ICT players: Alfie Bavidge and Captain Danny Devine! 00:01:05: Introduction - We've Survived! Moff introduces the panel, and asks for their initial thoughts about ICT surviving in League One, the season that has just finished and the achievements of Scott Kellacher. 00:15:49: Game by Game Just two games to cover, but what games they were! We start by discussing the survival-clinching 3-0 stroll against Arbroath, then try to remember what actually happened in the 2-0 win on celebration day at Montrose. 00:35:51: Player Awards We pay tribute to the players who were voted Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year by their teammates and the fans: Musa Dibaga, Charlie Gilmour and Keith Bray. 00:50:23: Talk to Me: Alfie Bavidge Unusually, almost all ICT's loan players this season turned out to be stars, but none shone more brightly than Alfie Bavidge. The Aberdeen striker, whose goals played such a big part in the club's survival, dropped into the pod to tell us about becoming an instant hero for his dad's old team and revealed who his favourite Inverness team-mate was.     01:05:03: Administration – the endgame? In the final week of the season, it was announced that a CVA would be put to Caley Thistle's creditors on 22nd May. If accepted by the creditors, then the club will exit administration and be owned by preferred bidder and all-round saviour Alan Savage. We chat briefly about recent developments and whether anything could still go wrong.      01:13:48: Talk to Me: Danny Devine Remember Wyness Shuffle interviews with actual, serving Caley Thistle players? Well, they're back! Club captain and current longest-serving player Danny Devine sat down with Stevie to talk about his relief at surviving in League One, his memories of signing for the club under Terry Butcher, the dark days of relegation under Duncan Ferguson and being managed by Scott Kellacher and Billy Mckay.      01:46:58: 2025-26 Season Lookahead As always, The Wyness Shuffle will return with a bumper season preview podcast some time in July, but for now we look at who we could be playing in L1 next season before casting our eyes upon the transfer market and some Wish List signings.   02:05:15 Competition time Your chance to win some glorious ICT artwork! 02:08:00: Moments of the season The boys name their best of-pitch and best on-pitch moments of the season. It's been emotional, put it that way. 02:14:26: A View From the Fans We hear from a number of very happy Caley Thistle fans at the last game of the season at Montrose, and learn the words to great new song. 02:17:20 Bye for now Bye for now from us, and to two ICT legends, to whom we dedicate the pod and the season. SCOUSER TOMMIES: WINNING TO BE WINNERS

The Anfield Index Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 42:16

After what felt like the longest international break in football history, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back for another episode of Scouser Tommies, as the Reds get back to winning ways and move another step closer to league title number 20, despite the PGMOL's best efforts. The win came courtesy of Diogo Jota's Merseyside Derby goal, one with a tinge of controversy. Liverpool's 1-0 win extended David Moyes's miserable Anfield record - he's won as many games at Anfield as Everton had shots on target in this match. What's that about proving you don't have to win to win trophies to be a winner? The controversy over Jota's goal was minor, and as Jim and Jay point out, easily explained. According to the laws of the game, Luis Diaz wasn't interfering from an offside position, although miserable Moyesie might need it explaining to him a few more times. Less minor was the controversy over James Tarkowski's tackle on Alexie Mac Allister. When even Duncan Ferguson is calling it a straight red card, there's not much room for manoeuvre. Or at least you'd think so, but many a blue will be defending that for years to come, if asked. Just before they start to rattle on about the ‘offside' goal. Another one for their long list. The PGMOL did point out the following day that Tarkowski's horror show should have been a red, but there was no sign of an explanation as to how Greater Manchester referee Paul Tierney, on VAR duty, failed to spot what everyone else did. Liverpool's next ref is from even closer to the city of Manchester. As discussed in the show, the derby win was much-needed and it really sets the Reds up well, and Jay discusses where Liverpool could be playing if and when they do finish the job. Not that the job is finished yet of course, and as Jim points out, next opponents Fulham aren't always an easy team to beat at their own place. As well as the highs of the derby win there's time to discuss the defeat at Wembley just before this break, and Jim wonders if maybe we are taking these occasions for granted. However, as Jay points out, the disappointment of losing that game will fade into nowhere if the Reds do complete the job in the competition that matters most, one we've not been able to take for granted for many a year. In addition this week, Jay and Jim discuss the Scouser in the team, Curtis Jones, who played at right-back in the derby and was on the receiving end of a lot of praise from his boss. There's also a discussion on the Scouser out injured, Trent Alexander Arnold, whose future was under even more of a spotlight during the international break. Has he already played his last game for his boyhood club? With this show coming so close to a derby, there was always going to be a mention of the neighbours and their comedic acts. The Kraken Wakes Something is stirring in the depths of League One. Harpooned by its own keepers, consigned to the bottom of the table in October and dismissed as a toothless nonentity by supporters of rival clubs, the behemoth that is ICT is rising again. Annan are being drawn towards its pitiless maw, and just beyond, Montrose are floundering desperately. Our intrepid crew of Andrew Moffat, Ross MacKenzie, Stevie Riley, Andrew Young and George Moodie climb inside the TWS bathysphere and descend to examine the phenomenon at close quarters: a 2-hour-and-39-minute journey containing over 30 years-worth of ICT references, wild conjecture and mild distraction. Let's Shuffle!   00:01:10: Introduction / Highland Highlight Moff introduces the panel, and we reflect on some of the highlights of the past month, from the goal-getting heroics of Alfie Bavidge and Keith Bray to Billy Mckay's contributions behind the scenes. Also, some chat about fishing. 00:08:36: The Headlines For those listeners who have been doing media-free January, here is the news. 00:09:48: Game by Game The panellists discuss the recent home and away matches against Queen of the South, and Scott Kellacher's line-ups and tactical tweaks. We also revisit the impressive away victories against Alloa and Annan and the fine performance against Dumbarton that kicked off a successful January, and try to weigh up how ICT compare to the rest of the teams in the league. 00:39:12: Talk to Me: Cammy Harper Still only 24, Cammy Harper played first-team football for ICT under John Robertson, Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Duncan Ferguson, and also experienced plenty of Scott Kellacher's coaching. Stevie sat down with Cammy to discuss his move to Carlisle, the differences between Scottish and English lower-league football, Caley Thistle teams past and present, and Kell's qualities as a coach.  01:05:24: The Club On the football side ICT are in calmer, warmer waters, but in financial terms the whirlpool of administration is still raging, and the car parks are under threat from sharks. We take our monthly look at all things club-related, from wrangling over leases, to our incoming commercial business manager, to the work of the Supporters' Trust and the continuing success of Bar 94.   01:29:59 The Scottish Transplant Football Team The last Transplant Football World Cup brought together teams from all over the world, but Scotland wasn't among them. ICT season ticket holder and heart transplant recipient Duncan MacCaulay wants to make sure that isn't repeated. AY spoke to the newly-appointed manager of Scotland's first national transplant football team.     01:47:33 Donald Trump's Scottish Football Cabinet Donald Trump's weird, colourful and downright criminal cabinet picks made headlines all round the world. If he's searching for more bizarre characters to make up his government, however, he need look no further than Scottish football. We come up with an alternative cabinet for The Donald.    01:54:03: Talk to Me: Martin Bavidge Before Alfie, there was Martin. By our reckoning, Alfie Bavidge is the third Caley Thistle player whose dad also played for the club. Stevie spoke to Martin Bavidge about playing under Pele, choosing to remain part time in football, and the role he played in bringing Alfie to ICT.     02:23:23: League Lookahead We round off the pod by looking at our chances in February's games against Arbroath, Stenhousemuir and Kelty and speculating on where the club might finish the season if the current trajectory continues. There's it.

And will the administrators be included in the ICT Secret Santa? 01.03.52 Dumbarton There hasn't been an insolvency event in Scottish football in some 12 years, then two come along at once. ICT PHYGITAL: A 2024-25 SEASON PREVIEW The league season we feared ICT might never see is nearly upon us, we still have a club, and things are still… interesting. Moff, Stevie, Sandy, AY, Lee and the P&J's Paul ‘Chalky' Chalk convene to discuss what the season might hold for the club on and off the pitch, and whether the future really is phygital. Let's shuffle! 00:00:59 – Welcome. Moff introduces the panellists, hears about their incredibly boring lives, then gives a brief summary of the incredibly bizarre life of Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC since May, which leads neatly into a discussion of… 00:05:14 – New Investment. The panellists go over what we know so far (not much!) about the club's potential new owner, Ketan Makwana of Seventy7 Ventures, and consider some of the many, many questions his proposed investment raises. 00:31:24 – League Cup Group Games / Current Squad. After a brief overview of the recent games against Annan, Bonnyrigg Rose, Arbroath and Dundee, we discuss the players who look like being key to our season, with particular focus on some of the academy players who have graduated to the first team.  00:43:48 – Talk to Me: Ryan Esson. In an extract from a longer interview, the recently-departed under-18 coach and Scottish Cup-winning goalkeeper talks to Stevie about the club's crop of young players. 00:52:54 – Areas for improvement. Concluding the discussion of the current squad, the panellists identify the areas in most need of strengthening. 00:55:28 – The Big Goodbye. We remember those players we have lost. And there's a lot of them. 01:03:31 – Talk to Me: Aaron Doran. Stevie's lengthy interview with Aaron will be released as a stand-alone podcast some time in the future, but in this extract he describes his final days at the club, his disappointment at the shoddy way he was treated by those in charge, and his debt of gratitude to the fans and his ex-colleagues. 01:18:20 – The Manager. A very brief discussion of Duncan Ferguson and whether there have been any signs of improvement in his tactics and his management in the first weeks of this season.  01:23:17 – The Opposition: Who's Who in League One. We run the rule over Alloa, Annan, Arbroath, Cove Rangers, Dumbarton, Kelty, Montrose, Queen of the South and Stenhousemuir, then give some predictions for final placings. Since we last put a podcast out, the Kelty plan is off, the Chairman has gone and the CEO is going. We talk about all of the dramatic events of the last couple of weeks, look back at our last two pods, the innovatively defunct Kelty Plan, the ringfenced youth academy and focus on what the future may hold in terms of investment and the dreaded threat of administration. And we do all that with ICT Number One Mark Ridgers! The now out of contract goalkeeper talks about this past season, offers his opinions on the current goings on and what the future may hold for him. Join Mark, along with Stevie Riley, Andrew Young, Lee Tarling, and Andrew Moffat as they dissect all things ICTFC. 01:30 Mark Ridgers: Mark talks the disappointment of relegation, the manager, teammates, and the fact that he is now out of contract but no one from the club has been in touch with him.   06:44 Worries: What is the main thing worrying the boys at the moment? Will we have a club to support? What is the bronze license? Is administration inevitable?   10:15 Downloads: Thanks to everyone for listening over the past few weeks. Some 3,200 people downloaded Long Way Down, our pod about Relegation and the Kelty announcement, and some 2,300 people downloaded 136 Miles from Home, our pod with now former ICT Chairman Ross Morrison. 11.17 Recap of events: A potted history of the series of events that led to this before we analyse the 137 word statement the club issued on 5 June. Mark gives his thoughts on the Kelty plan and the fact he and fellow players were not consulted.   20:18 View from the Fans: Liz MacRae, Jonny Campbell and David Moffat (nothing like a bit of nepotism, or maybe we only added these at the last minute because we forgot to ask for any) offer their opinions. 22:03 The resignations: Ross Morrison has resigned, Scot Gardiner is leaving, we discuss both men and their efforts behind the scenes, while reflecting on Ross' appearance on the last podcast. We go on to talk about the current situation both men are leaving behind and the football club's desperate need for cashflow. Mark also reflects on his time at Hearts when the Jambos went into administration, before talking about his seven years at Inverness, and his thoughts about Duncan Ferguson and this past season. 59.04 The Youth Academy: Alan Savage, chief executive of Inverness-based Orion Group, has come in to save the youth academy, pledging to cover any shortfalls with sponsorships of various types from £50,000-£100,000 and make sure the youth system is protected. We discuss. 1:08:43 View from the fans: The finances 1:09:46 Price of Football: We managed to speak to the UK's number one football financial expert, Keiran Maguire from one of the country's most popular podcasts, with Kevin Day, The Price of Football. Kieran is a British academic, author, and broadcaster. He specialises in the accountancy of association football and wrote the book The Price of Football. His expertise is frequently sought within English football media. So what did he have to say about the situation at ICT and how worried should we be (the answer is very)? 1:27:40  Investment and Administration: We reflect on Kieran's comments, the realities and processes of administration, how it could be avoided, debt, assets, other financial related stuff, how the situation affects current players and potential players, and what the likely scenarios might be for the football club. 1:53:03  Feedback: Amid the carnage of the last few weeks, as a podcast we've received some great feedback for the recent pods. Thanks for everyone whose dropped us a comment or message. We read some out. 1.55.15 Final thoughts from the Shufflers. ‘The Kelty battle has been won but there's a bigger fight ahead.'

Caley Thistle have been relegated to the third tier of Scottish football for this first time this century. Truly the saddest day in the club's 30 year history, that was until the club announced that they would be moving the football operations to Fife! This podcast was originally planned to focus on the relegation, to discuss where things went wrong, to examine where the blame lay and to look at how the club and supporters could regroup and come together as one to look to the future. All that went out the window with the Kelty announcement. Never has there been a more universally derided statement from the football club. Join Andrew Moffat, Andrew Young, Stevie Riley, Sandy Sutherland, Lee Tarling and many special guests as we discuss all that and all of the below in a 2 hour 30 minute pod (honestly we couldn't cut it further). Please do note that this is a very rough outline. Topics pop up all over the place, much like Billy Mackay last season. Also please note this episode is full of emotion and as such has a lot of colourful language. If that's not your thing, this podcast probably isn't either.  LINE-UP 02.00  Kelty: The football club is moving football operations Monday to Friday to Kelty Hearts Central Park from the start of June. We talk housing, fan reactions, the manager's role in this, the CEO and the Chairman, community outreach, mercenaries, youth players, Inverness based players, club staff, and we might get a bit emotional. 32.43  The Game: We talk the Hamilton and Montrose play-off games, plus the angry scenes at full time on the last game of the season with some fans invading the pitch and making their views known and very clear to the directors. We also talk statements, how long it took ICT to come out with one, what that first one said and reflect on the call for unity. Good one. 34.43  I'm Going Down: We get the views from the fans on this past season, the football and the manager. 37.55  Duncan Ferguson: We talk the Manager, his ineptitude, his questionable decisions, his excuses, his tactics, Billy Mackay, and Lee goes on about Champagne football versus lemonade money. 49.47  Talk to Me: Barry Wilson: An interview with a member of Caley Thistle's coaching staff this season. An absolute Caley Thistle icon. 353 games and 83 goals over two spells with the club, a league winner and a legend and most recently, assistant manager 1.13.50  Talk to Me: Falkirk Daft: We speak to someone who has been there and done it and bought five t-shirts. Falkirk took five years to get back up to the championship. Falkirk were a basket case, and they've just gone undefeated in winning league one. We talk to John McInally from Falkirk Daft. 1.42.55  Long Way Down: The fans are back with their views on the Club, the CEO and the Chairman and where we go from here. 1.48.56  Next Season: 30 years of ICT. Should be a time of celebration, should be a programme of events over the course of the season celebrating the achievements of the past incumbents of the football club. We discuss that and the painful indifference of those running the club. We talk season tickets, will the boys renew? We talk the CEO and the Chairman. We look at the practicalities of Duncan Ferguson managing in League One. We focus on contracts and what recruitment might look like. 2.08.41: Captain my Captain: Lee Tarling makes a call to arms with the best 5 minutes this podcast has produced in years! 2.13.50  League One Opposition: Alloa, Annan, Arbroath, Cove, Dumbarton, Kelty Hearts, Montrose, QOS, Stenhousemuir. Looks like a lot of fun. We discuss whether to support or not to support. 2.21.08  The Legends: Four heroes of yesterday return to offer their thoughts on the relegation. 2.27.31  Where do we go from here? 2.34.00 Bring it on Home

The latest Official Everton Podcast is all about last day dramas! Evertonians have had more than their fair share of mixed emotions on the final day of a football season and host Darren Griffiths is joined by Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland to look back at some of them. We feature the last-gasp escapes of 1994, 1998, 2022 and 2023 – and hear from one of the goalscoring heroes, Gareth Farrelly. We learn which future Blues hero made his professional debut as a teenager for Arsenal during the very last game at Goodison Park that wasn't filmed! And which Everton player is the only one to have ever scored the very last goal of a Premier League campaign – a 93rd minute winner? We also reveal that the legendary Denis Law goal for Manchester City against Manchester United in 1974 did NOT relegate United – Mike Lyons did it a week earlier! And when did Everton get their first penalty-kick of the season with just ten minutes of the final game to go! We also speak about Duncan Ferguson's last goal for Everton with his last kick of the last game against West Bromwich Albion and a wonder strike against Chelsea from Jermaine Beckford. And, of course, April 1978 when Bob Latchford just about reached his famous target of 30 league goals!

The latest guest on our Bred a Blue podcast series is former striker Phil Jevons. Jevons joined the Everton Academy as a schoolboy and went on to make nine senior appearances under Walter Smith. He recalls his early days at Netherton and Bellefield when the ‘friendly and challenging environment' helped him develop, playing alongside the likes of Leon Osman, Franny Jeffers, Danny Cadamarteri, Michael Ball, Richard Dunne and Jamie Milligan. Jevons also played against international footballers when he reached the reserve team: “We played Manchester United at Old Trafford and they had Scholes, Jordi Cruyff and Solskjaer.” The Liverpool-born centre-forward helped Everton to win the FA Youth Cup in 1998 and the FA Premier Reserve League in 2001 – and in between he made his senior debut away at Blackburn Rovers. "I'd been top scorer for the reserves for three years on the run, so I felt like I was ready,” Jevons said. He went on to have a hand in the Everton goal in a 2-1 defeat: “I played an early ball to Don Hutchison and he found Bakayoko who scored.” The turn of the century was a challenging time to be a young striker at Everton because the competition was intense. Jevons was battling with Duncan Ferguson, Franny Jeffers, Kevin Campbell, Nick Barmby, Ibrahim Bakayoko and Danny Cadamarteri for a starting role. It was the subsequent arrivals of Joe-Max Moore and Mark Hughes that convinced Jevons that his future lay beyond Goodison Park “Joe-Max Moore was a good player and a great lad but I didn't think he was any better than I was,” he says. “But my squad number went up from 20 to 26 so I had an inkling!” Jevons left Everton with no regrets and during the podcast conversation he reveals the player who had the biggest influence on him during his time with the senior squad. “He was fantastic with me. He was the ultimate professional, fit as a fiddle. He told me how to live my life, how to eat and how to train.” He left Everton in 2001 and joined Grimsby Town, for whom he scored a never-to-be-forgotten League Cup winner at Anfield against Liverpool! “I still get Evertonians coming up to me to talk about that goal!” Jevons went on to have personal and team success with Yeovil Town and Bristol City before winding down his playing career and moving into coaching – starting off at the Everton Academy where he was involved in the development of Kieran Dowell, Nathan Broadhead, Liam Walsh, Tom Davies and Calum Connolly. Jevons left Finch Farm to join Sunderland and he speaks honestly and with clarity about the ruthlessness of senior coaching environments. It's another fascinating football story that has its roots at the Everton Academy.

What lessons can Manchester United take from Brighton's new star Kauro Mitoma and Arsenal's pursuit of the Seagulls' midfielder Moises Caicedo? That's one discussion of many in the latest Manchester United Weekly Podcast with Harry Robinson and Jack Tait. The two Reds react to a 3-1 victory over Reading in the FA Cup at Old Trafford which sees Erik Ten Hag's side through to the Fifth Round. Ten Hag is the first United manager in history to win his first six domestic cup matches. They listen to some wonderful Beatles-inspired commentary of Casemiro's lovely second goal and discuss the Brazilian's influence on Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Antony's excellent assist and progress. Christian Eriksen left M16 on crutches on Saturday night, so what would his absence mean for the team? Answering questions from the podcast's Patrons, Harry and Jack determine how much credit is due to United's way for the signings made last summer and whether the Reds should make a move for Brighton's Mitoma, or whether his good form can give the club a different lesson entirely. The boys play guess the player and provide an extensive youth, loan and United Women round-up with cup progress for Marc Skinner's side, two lovely goals for the U21s and a potential move away for FA Youth Cup-winning striker Charlie McNeill in League Two. And some brilliant commentary on Casemiro's goal 12:30 Casemiro's influence on those around him (especially Wan-Bissaka) 25:50 Guess the Player - Clue One 26:50 Patreon question: How much credit does the new behind-the-scenes structure at United deserve for recent transfers? Obviously, Casemiro was sensational on Saturday and Ten Hag can take a lot of credit for the team's good form but overall singings have been pretty good so far this season- I even think Weghorst is a really good short-term solution/ squad player. (From Ted Popham, Patron since *) 32:25 Patreon question: Finally a question about my favourite non-United player to watch at the moment, Mitoma. How good do you think he is/could be? I really love watching him play and would love to see United get him instead of another top 6 club. If United were to get him, would he be a good signing? He could give squad depth plus competition for spaces- the type of signing City make all the time. Or do we already have too many left-wingers, especially with Garnacho needing game time?
