How does it feel to be called hostile? What about barren? Inhospitable? Geriatric? These are all words women over the age of 35 have heard in doctor's offices for decades to describe their reproductive health as they explore options for childbirth. The terminology has been changing, but for some, not quickly enough. When the culture is pushing for more humane ways to talk about women's bodies, how long will it take modern medicine to catch up? Brittany talks with Rachel E. Gross, author of Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage to understand what the use of these words reveal about our cultural expectations of pregnant people.Want more on the culture of women's health? This week on "I've Been Meaning to Listen To That", we review NOTHING'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN TO ME by Mitski with special guests Jorge Chisi and Harper Thomson! Plus, we break down how "Nothing's About To Happen To Me" is a synthesis of "Bury Me At Makeout Creek" and "The Land is Inhospitable And So Are We", how this album acts as a darker B-Side album to "The Land is Inhospitable", how the record is a thoughtful meditation on the nature of sad music, how the album is brave enough to meet the audience at their level, and discuss Lisa Kudrow losing the Emmy two times against Julia Louis-Dreyfus! 0:00 Queening Out w/ Jorge0:24 theme song1:01 preconceived notions on Mitski15:25 the rollout27:28 themes & symbolism35:06 Lisa Kudrow & Julia Louis-Dreyfus44:32 where's my phone50:57 If I Leave54:01 Instead of Here57:19 Rules / Lightning59:38 Cats1:03:14 that white cat1:14:58 final thoughts and ratingsFollow Jorge Chisi on Instagram (grilled_chisi)Follow Harper Thomson on Instagram (@harpingabout)Follow Michael Limentato on Instagram (@limentaco)Follow Andrew Ambrose Lee on Instagram (@andrewambroselee)Follow Stenley Philippe on Instagram (@snapasten)Follow Stefanie Senior on Instagram (@stefmsenior)Cover Art by Megan Rika Young ( Instagram: @meganrika)Theme Song by OTNES (Instagram: @mxotnes)Follow us at (@ibmtltt) on Tiktok & Instagram, and email us at ivebeenmeaningtolistentothat@gmail.comPlease leave us a rating or review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Have a good daaay!
Eric J. Dolan describes the Falkland Islands as a barren, inhospitable archipelago of constant 18 mph winds and freezing temperatures, frequented by mariners hunting fur seals and elephant seals. The islands became the site of a major disaster when the ship Isabella — sailing from a penal colony in Australia with a volatile mix of crew, marines, and convicts — wrecked on Eagle Island due to the incompetence and intoxication of Captain George Hickton. Although all 54 aboard reached shore alive, they found themselves shipwrecked in a remote wilderness, leading many to descend into despair and alcohol abuse. (2)1833 FALKLANDS
Andy and Brendan return with plenty to discuss as the golf world finally moves out of the Ryder Cup's blast radius. Naturally, this episode kicks off with a Baseball Minute due to a disappointing start to the NLDS for Andy's beloved Cubs and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Things quickly transition to "Don Watch" as Brendan is hearing rumblings that the "Lose Yourself" karaoke video may surface in the coming days. The PGA Tour moves from Jackson, Mississippi to Tokyo, Japan this week for the Baycurrent Classic. This event and its various changes in the last five years leads to a wider discussion about the PGA Tour schedule and the ultimate question of "how many tournaments is too many?" Elsewhere on the schedule this week, the Korn Ferry Tour finals are set to go off in French Lick even though most of next year's Tour cards are locked up. On the DP World Tour, many LIV stars are at the Spanish Open contending for a 2026 Masters invite. Jon Rahm is playing his home event and spoke to the media to somewhat re-ignite the Ryder Cup crowd discourse a bit, as one does. After running through the rest of the Schedule for the Week, Andy and Brendan parse through a bunch of golf news including the return of the Skins Game and the 2026 TGL schedule release (with accompanying content!).

Shipwreck in the Barren Falklands Guest: Eric Jay Dolin The Nanina crew was sealing in the inhospitable Falkland Islands, characterized by constant 18 mph winds, cold temperatures, and no trees, only tall tussock grass. The sealing industry targeted valuable fur seals, rougher hair seals, and massive elephant seals whose blubber yielded high-quality illuminant oil. While the Americans were operating, the British ship Isabella, sailing from the Australian penal colony to London, wrecked on Eagle Island. The Isabella carried 54 people, including armed Marines, former convicts, and prostitutes. Captain George Higton was blamed for the crash due to his ineptitude and heavy drinking. Although the survivors made it ashore, they felt stranded and many broke into the salvaged alcohol.

A combination of the warming climate and the phenomenon of lake browning are making the bottom of most lakes in New York’s Adirondack Mountains unlivable for cold water fish – such as trout, salmon, and whitefish – in the summer. Lake browning occurs when dissolved organic matter from forests turns the water tea-brown. Browning is […]

Welcome to Episode 11 of Roots Music Rambler! Join us – hosts Francesca Folinazzo, who Jason calls “Frank,” and Jason Falls, who goes by “Falls” most of the time, as we explore the real roots of the music we love. On this episode, we're joined by singer-songwriter Sara Jean Stevens. The Illinois-based artist has put in years of grind, playing in other people's bands and other people's music. She even did a European tour with Bleached, an L.A.-based punk band a few years back. But she decided one day she had songs in her that needed to get out, so she started gigging with her own band, which morphed into a solo act backed by musicians and began to find her own voice and sound. Firmly planted in the Americana sound, Stevens writes songs she calls “dusty and warm” like the horse farm she grew up on. Frank and Falls talked about her journey to cutting her first album, the new EP and eventual LP in the works, her career as a hair and makeup artist, her recent jaunt into being a muralist, and a lot more. Stevens is set to open for John Hiatt in the spring and is poised for a big year in 2024. Frank and Falls also reveal Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store, talk about their experience in bands and singing in public, and, of course, share some new albums and artists worth checking in in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment of the show. Falls swoons over his favorite new find in years - Proof of Life from Joy Oladokun. Buckle up for The Hoe-Down and the Throw-Down! It's a new episode of Roots Music Rambler. The Hospital Corporation of America purchased the nonprofit Mission Hospital four years ago in a deal shrouded in secrecy. Since then, hundreds of doctors, nurses and support staff have resigned. North Carolina's attorney general has joined them in protesting what they see as an unflinching profits-over-people business model. The Asheville Watchdog has written many stories detailing much of the decimation of Asheville's once-vaunted hospital. Recently, the Watchdog's executive editor, Peter Lewis, wrote an extensive column that asks “What can be done?”Lewis walks us through a purchase that, from every angle, appears nefarious. We talk about HCA's anti-competitive actions and some missed opportunities to place certain quality-of-care guardrails on the sale. As the world prepares for the new reality climate change is bringing, countries are reacting differently to the nuances of global warming. In the United States, Joe Biden has supported a supercomputer in Colorado that is modeling geoengineering and weather manipulation with a focus on solar engineering. Joe Biden has also met with King Charles in the UK to discuss green energy solutions. Denmark is taking on sustainable energy projects by creating energy islands that utilize offshore windfarms. And Oslo, Norway is focusing on clean energy technology and seeks to bring the city close to zero emission. Oh, and also in the US, Florida is gaming Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) by burning thousands of tons of trash and polluting neighborhoods and our planet, and exacerbating the climate crisis. This week, Mars pushes a Jupiterian door that's stuck; relationship change is in the air with Venus and Uranus; feeling truly rich with Mars and the North Node; a Virgo First Quarter Moon asks us to serve, and the Sun's square to Saturn points to rocky terrain. And April answers a colorful and imaginative listener question about how essential dignities influence the houses of the chart. Plus: Milanese werewolves, noms de podcast, and pushing past the big guy! Read a full transcript of this episode. Order your personal copy of April's “Followed by a Moonshadow” Eclipse Report! Have a question you'd like answered on the show? Email April or leave it here! Subscribe to April's mailing list and get a free lunar workbook at each New Moon! Love the show? Make a donation! Timestamps [1:14] Mars will square Jupiter on May 22nd (10:13 PM PDT) at 01°28' of Leo and Taurus. A chance to inspire others to join us in whatever it is that we are trying to accomplish, even if it's just pushing open a door that's stuck. [4:22] On May 26th (12:37 AM PDT), Venus sextiles Uranus at 19°53' Cancer and Taurus. Venus is on the Sabian symbol, 20 Cancer, Gondoliers in a serenade, and Uranus is on the symbol, 20 Taurus, Wind, clouds and haste. Change could be in the air in our relationships. Be on the lookout for unforeseen monetary windfalls and/or expenditures. [6:37] On May 26th (1:05 PM PDT), Mars makes a square to the Lunar Nodes at 03°32' Leo, and with the Nodes at 03°32' minutes of Taurus and Scorpio. The Sabian symbol for 4 Leo is, A man formally dressed and a deer with its horns folded. What makes you feel truly rich versus playing the role of being rich and successful? [8:29] Moon Report! The Virgo First Quarter Moon will occur on May 27th (8:22 AM PDT) at 06°05' Virgo. This First Quarter Moon naturally features a tight T-square with the Sun squaring the Moon which is opposed Saturn at 06°50' of Pisces. [9:16] The Virgo First Quarter is the point of activating a very specific goal. The Sabian symbol for the Moon, 7 Virgo is, A harem. The symbol for the Sun is 7 Gemini, An old fashioned well. The Sabian symbol for Saturn at 7 Pisces, A cross lying on the rocks. These particular symbols suggest a message of sacrifice, of rocky terrain on our path ahead, but also, that the energy that we expend will be naturally replenished by the process of taking action on our New Moon in Taurus goals. [10:42] This is the First Quarter Moon in the Lunar Phase Family Cycle that began with the August 27th, 2022 New Moon at 04°03' Virgo. The Full Moon in this Lunar Phase Cycle is on February 24th, 2024, and the Last Quarter Moon comes on November 22nd, 2024. [11:10] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon Periods. On May 24th (2:12 AM PDT), the Moon in Cancer trines Neptune. It's VOC for just about 5 ¼ hours, before it enters Leo (7:35 AM PDT). Break the emotional habit of carrying little hurts and insults. Wash the slate clean and move on. [12:31] The Moon in Leeeeoooooo squares Uranus in Taurus on May 25th (11:38 PM PDT). It is VOC for about 20 ¾ hours (!!!) before entering Virgo on May 26th (8:05 PM PDT). This is a call for change, and to examine whether you're demanding more than your share of attention, or being too rigid in our leadership style? [13:55] The Sun will make its bi-annual square to Saturn on May 28th (3:46 AM PDT) at 06°52' of Gemini and Pisces. It may feel incredibly difficult to make any kind of forward progress with anything. Why are healthcare costs so high in the United States? Filmmaker Sandra Alvarez's illuminating documentary INHOSPITABLE follows patients and activists as they band together in an effort to stop UPMC, a multi-billion-dollar nonprofit hospital system, from making vital care unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of vulnerable patients in western Pennsylvania. Few are aware that in the past several years many nonprofit hospitals around the country have been building healthcare empires and amassing huge amounts of wealth and political power at the expense of the surrounding residents. The story of INHOSPITABLE illustrates this alarming trend and turns the lens on the seemingly un-winnable battle between the Goliath UPMC and the patients, hospital workers, community activists, labor leaders, journalists, and politicians - almost all of them women - who built a grassroots movement to literally fight for their lives. Director Sandra Alvarez (The History of Comedy, The Nineties) explores the perspectives of patients, hospital workers, advocates, and politicians to shed light on an overlooked fight for justice and how what happened in Pennsylvania can and is happening in every corner of America. There's a giant game of monopoly being played by healthcare providers in our country, and neither you nor I stand to benefit. Sandra Alvarez's latest film, InHospitable, shines a light on two specific players in the game in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - a place that's very near and dear to me. Tensions rose when the dominant healthcare provider UPMC created its own insurance company. Patients previously receiving care with UPMC providers and at their hospitals were pushed out unless they switched to UPMC's insurance. In response, Highmark, the dominant insurer, started its medical provider, Allegheny Health Network. The two continue to battle it out for market share. This type of infighting amongst organizations claiming to provide care to the community makes you wonder whose interests they really care about and InHospitable does a great job of clarifying some of these very confronting issues.
