This week I sit down with actor, teacher and overall performance creator @ryangilmartin5876 as we talk about a challenge. Ryan like myself is from a background in small towns and villages but also like me has been and seen plenty of the world. Creating shows and experiences Ryan mixes history, folklore and insight to try and bring more creative opportunities to the world. So this week we talk about the challenge of doing that in smaller and more rural places. Embracing the native homesteads and looking at how places like the East Midlands, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and Humberside (I could keep going) face a challenge with not only finding creative and conceptually forward spaces but how generating those places can be a challenge too. To bring something not purely functional to an area where frivolity is met with suspicion is a challenge and a topic close to my core!I do suggest you check out Ryan and what he's up to. At the time this episode goes live he's performing in "Henry the VIII used to hate us" and tickets are available across the east of England.Ryan's links:https://easternangles.co.uk/event/henry-viii-used-to-hate-us/https://www.instagram.com/ryan.gilmartin1/The show is available on:Ituneshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yelling-at-concrete/id1238765054Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3T2OhYE07edgaBDXrm86saAcasthttps://shows.acast.com/yellingatconcreteSupport us onhttps://www.patreon.com/yellingatconcreteIf you'd like to support at all there is a patreon and I have the goal of finding 38 members by the end of the year to make the show fully funded in terms of the running costs! The Cicle Classic is England's answer to the spring classics. Paris-Roubaix is the Hell of the North so perhaps this ought to be known as the Beast in the East. The race celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, with the 2025 edition taking place on Sunday, April 27. Held in the East Midlands, the race criss-crosses the countryside, taking in rough, rutted farm tracks. If it was created today it would be considered a gravel race. The Tour of Flanders has the Koppenberg, Gent-Wevelgem has the Kemmelberg, Paris-Roubaix has the Arenberg – the Cicle Classic has Somerberg. Lionel Birnie explores the history and character of the UK's highest-ranked one-day race and hears from the founder Colin Clews who had the idea, Matt Stephens, who was third in the first edition two decades ago, Conor Dunne, who won in 2016 and James McCallum, who was on the podium in arguably the most dramatic and certainly the muddiest edition in 2012. Mike and Elliott look at a potential hurdle in the Gustard appointment and enjoy the news (and reaction) that the Premiership will be trialling OPTIONAL away ends. We also pick apart a friendly win against a young Munster side and look ahead to an East Midlands derby which is sadly blighted by a case of "who-is-available-itis".
Sat seven points from safety with an ever-growing injury crisis, many considered Derby to be down and out last week. But John Eustace's side are fighters, not victims, and after victories over play-off chasing Blackburn and Coventry, The Rams are just a point behind 21st-placed Cardiff.Fresh from the Pride Park press box, Jack Bryan is joined by Nigel Owen and Chris Smith to discuss a super week for Derby County and look ahead to the weekend's crucial six-pointer at Home Park. There's a big weekend of women's football in the East Midlands to come too, with Derby County Women facing Nottingham Forest Women at the City Ground on Sunday, while the Subway Women's League Cup Final takes place at Pride Park on Saturday – Jack has all the details. Thanks for listening, up the Rams, and the Ewes!LinksBlackburn ReportCoventry ReportEustace post-Coventry press conference quotes for DerbyUniFootyJournos
A case of Foot and Mouth has been identified on a dairy farm in the North West of Hungary. Imports from Hungary and Slovakia of meat and other animal products have been banned, to try to prevent the disease spreading to the UK. A similar ban has been in place on products from Germany following cases there in January, but concerns have been raised that German animal products have still entered the UK since then. We ask if UK border controls are good enough to keep UK farmers safe. And the vast majority of farms use contractors - who often bring specialist knowledge, training, or kit. We visit JSE Systems Ltd near Grantham in Lincolnshire, which specialises in supplying, delivering and spreading fertilisers across much of the East Midlands.Presented by Anna Hill Produced by Heather Simons
What is the church, and what is it for? In this episode, Loren Richmond Jr. talks with Rev. Dr. David Emerton to explore the purpose of the church, how different theological traditions define its role, and why these definitions matter for shaping the church's future. David shares insights on why many churches are caught in cycles of inertia or panic in response to decline, how our implicit assumptions about the church shape ministry practices, and why understanding ecclesiology is essential for church leaders today. The conversation also touches on theological education, the role of tradition, and how the church can remain faithful in a changing world. David Emerton (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is director of St. Mellitus College, East Midlands, United Kingdom. He previously served as principal of the School of Discipleship in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and as a teaching fellow in systematic and historical theology at the University of Aberdeen. David is ordained as priest in the Church of England and prior to his training for ordination he worked in the City of London as a solicitor. He is the author of God's Church Community: The Ecclesiology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Types of Ecclesiology: Five Theological Approaches. Embark on an audible adventure with Daniel Finton, Alfie Culshaw, Rob Worthington, and Mac Johnson as they analyse all of the latest news regarding the Arsenal. This week, Rob and Alfie combine for an exceptional podcast, dissecting Arsenal's 2-0 win over Leicester at the King Power Stadium. Rob gives us the rundown of his experience in the away end in the East Midlands, before we move onto the match itself. There's an in-depth discussion on how this sterility and dullness is kind of what we have to expect without Bukayo Saka, before we discuss the performances of Raheem Sterling, Mikel Merino and, of course, Ethan Nwaneri. This is the first ‘UK Property Market Stats Show' of 2025, the ‘Stat Show' is a weekly one-hour documentary report on YouTube. It is for the week ending Sunday, 12th January 2025, I am joined by this week's special guest, Ben Madden, an Estate Agent from West London to discuss the property market headlines for Week 1 of 2025. It must be stressed this is the first week of the year, and because the first full week started later than other years (on the 6th January 2025), some of the figures, when compared to previous years, are considerably higher than other years. This will settle down as the rest of January opens out. The main headlines this week though: · Listings (New properties coming on to the market) - 27.4k UK listings this week (week 1). 34% higher YTD than 2024 YTD. 35.6% higher YTD than 17/18/19 YTD · % of Resi Sales Stock being reduced (Monthly): 7.8% of Resi sales stock was reduced in December (this stat is monthly in arrears). 11.1% in November. 11.9% & 2024 average and long term 5 year average 10.6%. NB We always get a dip of this stat in December · Total Gross Sales - 19.2k UK homes sold stc this week (Week 1). 74% higher than the same standalone week (week 1) in 2024. Also, 11.2% higher than 2017/18/19 YTD levels. · Sale Thru rate (Monthly): UK Estate Agents sold 10.61% of their Resi sales stock in Dec '24 (Dec '23 - 8.79%). 2024 average is 15.3% & the 7 year long term average is 17.9% per month. · Sale fall-throughs - Agents lost 3.8% of their sales pipeline for the month of December (2024 average 5.36%). For the week 1, Sale Fall Thrus (as a % of Gross sales Agreed) increased to 33.0% (up from 25.7% from the last two months of 2024). This is normal with a glut of sale fall thrus coming out the Christmas & New Year break. The 7 year Long Term weekly Average is 24.2% and it was 40%+ in the two months following the Truss Budget in the Autumn of 2022. · Net Sales - 12.9k this week (average for week normally 7.7k). 88.9% higher than the same week 1 in 2024, 99.4% higher YTD in 2024 compared to YTD 17/18/19. · Resi Sales Stock on the Market (Monthly Stat) : 605k at end of December (down from 677k at end of Nov). For comparison, Dec '23 - 560k, Dec '22 - 481k, Dec '21 - 342k, Dec '20 - 543k, Dec '19 - 545k. · Resi Sales Sold STC Pipeline (Units) (Monthly Stat): 441k at end of December. For comparison, Dec '23 - 359k, Dec '22 - 373k, Dec '21 - 468k, Dec '20 - 548k, Dec '19 - 310k. · UK House Prices - As explained in the show, the £/sqft figure foretells and predicts the Land Registry 5 months in advance with an accuracy rating of 92%. Final December figures saw a slight drift in this important metric to £339/sq.ft. For comparison - Nov's £342/sq.ft, August's £334/sq.ft, and Dec '23 at £322/sq.ft. This means house prices have grown 5.28% in the last 12 months. · Average Rents in the UK * East Anglia: 2024 Average £1,387, Growth since 2016: 29.9% * East Midlands: 2024 Average £1,065, Growth since 2016: 45.5% * Inner London: 2024 Average £3,141, Growth since 2016: 26.0% * North East: 2024 Average £985, Growth since 2016: 29.9% * North West: 2024 Average £1,141, Growth since 2016: 42.1% * Northern Ireland: 2024 Average £927, Growth since 2016: 36.1% * Outer London: 2024 Average £1,943, Growth since 2016: 22.0% * Scotland: 2024 Average £1,116, Growth since 2016: 46.8% * South East: 2024 Average £1,796, Growth since 2016: 40.0% * South West: 2024 Average £1,629, Growth since 2016: 78.4% * Wales: 2024 Average £1,137, Growth since 2016: 50.4% * West Midlands: 2024 Average £1,125, Growth since 2016: 39.2% * Yorkshire & Humberside: 2024 Average £1,058, Growth since 2016: 39.8% Local Focus this week - Bath Graphs for personal use - https://we.tl/t-iBOpi3it6c

For generations of women and girls, glossy magazines have been a guide to clothes, lifestyles, relationships and, of course, sex. Titles like Cosmopolitan, Woman's Own and Sugar were pored over by thousands of us and now there is a podcast that celebrates those beloved back issues. Every week the hosts of Mag Hags, Lucy Douglas and Franki Cookney, read a different issue of a magazine from the 70s, 80s or 90s. As well as revelling in the 20th Century fashions, features and lifestyle advice, Lucy and Franki join Nuala McGovern to uncover a fascinating insight into the way we lived then, and the way we live now.A public inquiry begins today which will explore the circumstances of the death of Dawn Sturgess, the woman from Wiltshire killed by a 2018 poisoning blamed on Russian agents. Her death came four months after Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found unconscious on a bench in Salisbury. At the time Prime Minister Theresa May said the Skripals were poisoned with the military grade nerve agent, Novichok and that it was "highly likely" that Russia was responsible - a claim Russia denies. Dawn Sturgess died after coming in to contact with the nerve agent which had been hidden inside a perfume bottle. Nuala is joined by BBC Wiltshire's Marie Lennon, one of the voices behind the new BBC Podcast, Salisbury Poisonings.Black Box Diaries is a feature-length documentary that follows the director Shiori Itō's investigation into her own alleged sexual assault in an attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender. Opening up questions around the #MeToo movement in Japan, Shiori explains how her quest became a landmark case exposing the country's outdated judicial and societal systems.Death is a subject many people still shy away from, but one woman is determined to change that. Funeral director Inez Capps is on a mission to challenge the taboos around death and demystify an industry often shrouded in mystery. Since the age of 19, she's been working with the deceased, and she's using social media to give people a glimpse behind the scenes — from the care a loved one receives, to tours of the hearse and the embalming suite. Inez runs a funeral business with her parents in the East Midlands.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

As the people of Wellingborough headed to the polls for a historic vote, hosts Aggie Chambre and Sascha O'Sullivan took a train to the East Midlands to see how by-elections really play out on the ground. Over the course of a month, they went door-knocking with the candidates, spoke to disenfranchised voters and, finally, stayed up all night to watch the count. They watched Reform's Ben Habib drive round in an gigantic, double-decker blue bus and Labour's Gen Kitchen show off her Taylor Swift friendship bracelets. They listened to the Liberal Democrat's Ana Savage Gunn regale stories of her former life as a police firearms officer ... and even managed to track down the elusive Tory candidate, Helen Harrison. And the duo consider what this show-stopping by-election result will mean for the upcoming general election. Today, we look at whether the system failed victims of the Nottingham attacks. Families of the victims of the Nottingham attacks are calling for a public inquiry into the case. Valdo Calocane was given a hospital order on Thursday for killing Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, as well as Ian Coates, 65, in June. But Mr Webber's parents said they were "horrified" and "disgusted" there were no immediate plans for an inquiry.Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Ifti Majid said the organisation had "robustly" reviewed its treatment of Calocane between May 2020 and September 2022. Nottinghamshire's police and crime commissioner Caroline Henry said the attacks were a tragedy that no-one could have foreseen. However, she said she was seeking reassurance from Nottinghamshire Police over outstanding warrants. She said she was confident the force delivered a good service overall but there was "always room for improvement".James is joined by Chair of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS mental health trust and former inspector, Zoe Billingham, former director of public prosecutions, Lord Ken MacDonald and East Midlands today reporter, Emily Anderson. And, three US troops have been killed in a drone attack on a US base in Jordan.
