Roger Whitney continues the four-part series on navigating health care before Medicare, focusing this week on controlling costs—both through everyday decisions and by understanding how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidy system works now that the expanded credits have expired. He explains the return of the 400% federal poverty level “cliff,” walks through how modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) impacts premiums, shares listener experiences with inflation and subsidy loss, and explores the ethical tension around optimizing for government benefits.OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN(00:00) This show is dedicated to helping you not just survive retirement, but have the confidence to lean in and rock it.(00:30) Roger introduces week three of the four-part series on health care before Medicare, focusing on controlling health care costs and understanding ACA subsidies. He previews next week's structured decision framework and conversation with Taylor Schulte of Define Financial.PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT(02:35) Start with the fundamentals: staying or getting healthy through strength, cardio, mobility, screenings, and proactive chronic condition management to potentially reduce long-term costs.(04:58) Compare all available coverage options and use practical strategies like staying in-network, timing procedures, and shopping prescriptions to manage costs.UNDERSTANDING THE ACA SUBSIDY SCHEME (POST-2025 CHANGES)(08:48) Roger breaks down the Affordable Care Act's premium subsidy scheme, designed to make health care more affordable and protect coverage for preexisting conditions. He explains how subsidies are based on income relative to the federal poverty level (FPL) and how the rules have changed over time, including expansions under the American Rescue Plan and temporary extensions during COVID.(11:55) Roger explains how the premium tax credit works, including that eligibility is based on having income between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, and that exceeding the threshold by even $1 eliminates any subsidies(14:00) Roger gives an example of a married couple comparing higher versus lower income, illustrating how managing income can significantly affect subsidies in the years before Medicare.(15:47) What counts toward Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) and what does not count.(18:00) Reconciliation risk: estimating income during open enrollment and potentially repaying subsidies if actual income exceeds projections.(22:30) Strategic planning opportunities: building tax diversification before retirement (taxable, Roth, HSA) to create flexibility in managing MAGI and avoiding unforced errors like unexpected capital gain distributions, RSU vesting, or inherited IRA withdrawals.(26:40) Common pitfalls that can unexpectedly reduce your health care subsidies, and why keeping a buffer below the income cliff matters.LISTENER QUESTIONS & OBSERVATIONS(30:25) Joe reflects on retiring in his early 50s and how health care costs quickly became a major factor in his retirement planning.(35:35) Clarification on ACA navigators and where to find assistance through HealthCare.gov and research from Kaiser Family Foundation.(37:00) David shares his experience navigating insurance before Medicare, highlighting how exploring different options helped manage costs.(38:36) Gene asks about handling a gap in coverage before Medicare, and Roger shares strategies to manage costs and explore available options.(45:20) Philosophical discussion on whether it is appropriate to intentionally manage income to qualify for subsidies, and how each person must reconcile financial optimization with personal values.SMART SPRINT(51:30) Choose one area of spending this week—health care or otherwise—and apply intentional cost awareness to build the habit of conscious cost control.REFERENCESSubmit a Question for RogerSign up for The NoodleThe Retirement Answer ManKaiser Family Foundation (KFF)Healthcare.gov
James welcomes Aston Villa fan Lee Jackson and Leeds United fan Ed Salinger on to Clash of the Correspondents ahead of the meeting between the two clubs at Villa Park on Saturday. The title may look beyond Villa, but there's still plenty to play for as they try and hold on to a Champions League qualification spot and they will fancy their chances of going deep in the Europa League too. While for Leeds, despite sitting 15th and only 6 points above West Ham, the general consensus seems to be that they'll be fine after sustained period of positive results and performances. All the key FPL assets covered including defensive assets from both, Morgan Rogers, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. And there's plenty of reason to be interested in their assets, Villa have Wolves after Leeds and Leeds themselves have a great run beginning from GW29. Infact, from now until the end of the season, Villa and Leeds sit as the top two on James' fuxture difficulty ticker! Grayson Brulte went on location to Miami to inspect Waymo's infrastructure buildout across the city, uncovering two depots that reveal the company's ambitious plans to scale to thousands of vehicles in South Florida. The first depot, located adjacent to Miami International Airport, has not yet broken ground but sits on a large parcel with significant room for expansion. A service road connects the site directly to the airport, without the need to use the highway, positioning Waymo for a seamless airport-to-destination corridor that could be operational within 12 to 18 months. The second depot, already operational in the Wynwood area near the Design District, is running what we estimate to be 20-plus vehicles with roughly 30-plus chargers situated next to a Florida Power & Light substation. The facility currently operates out of PODS with no covered garage, but vacant parcels on both sides and an adjacent warehouse present a clear path to scale. While we were there on the ground, FPL was on-site micro trenching, a potential signal that additional electrical capacity is being routed to the depot.Looking ahead, Waymo's ability to service a thousand vehicles between these two depots appears well within reach. The next frontier is the beaches, Surfside, North Beach, South Beach, where a third depot will likely be necessary to navigate Miami's notoriously heavy traffic. With Hard Rock Stadium hosting Dolphins games, F1, and the Super Bowl returning to Miami, the demand signal for robotaxis in this market is unmistakable.Episode Chapters0:00 Waymo's "Rat Pack" Ambitions in Miami1:00 The Airport Depot: Bypassing the Highway2:00 The Wynwood Depot: 35 Chargers & A Substation3:00 Miami Depots Compared to the Santa Monica Depot4:00 From PODS to Warehouses: The Expansion Plan5:00 The FPL Signal: Micro-Trenching 6:00 Expanding Depots to Surfside & South Beach7:00 The Super Bowl & Hard Rock Stadium Demand8:00 The Future Is Bright. Following the weekend' FA Cup football and last night's 5th round draw Suj and James revaluate the outlook for Chip usage for the rest of the season, and though current projections remain unchanged there's lots that could change in the coming weeks and that may force many FPL managers to move away from the current template strategy. What will happen to the Manchester City v Crystal Palace fixture? Could Gameweek 33 be the only remaining Double Gameweek? Should Bench Boost be used now or held for later? It's all covered, including alternative 'out' chip strategies if at short notice Gameweek 32 would look bad for a Wildcard followed by a Gameweek 33 Bench Boost, why certain fixtrures could be forced into certain weeks, if non European teams could have postponements go into random weeks and more, including why the next big event that could alter the landscape is the scheded April TV selections... David joins James on the Gameweek Review for discussion on the nine games played so far, but for many, the FPL week will be defined by what Arsenal do with many scores on the low side so far. But there have been haulers, including the Chelsea pair of Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo and Liverpool's Virgil Van Diijk. Of course David and James own none of them, but James does at least have a nice tidy return from Neco O'Reilly. There's been two managerial dismissals in Thomas Frank and Sean Dyche, more rain (and pain), and there are some new fixtures turn on the horizon which may tempt managers to look at several low owned players. The first Double Gameweek of the season is upon us and FPL managers are getting excited at the points on offer
Suj and James review all the football and key FPL talking points from the Gameweek 25 weekend which concluded with dramatic scenes at Anfield as Manchester City kept their title challenge alive. That win featured a late Erling Haaland haul, surpassing Bruno Fernandes own double digit haul against Tottenham, but neither were anywhere near Cole Palmer's 20 pointer as he recorded a first half hat-trick at Wolves. There were also key wins in the battle to survive as Leeds beat Nottingham Forest and West Ham won at Burnley were Crysensio Summerville scored for the fourth game in a row. Now focus turns towards the Arsenal Double Gameweek. Should Gabriel be Triple Captained? What's the best Arsenal three? Should any Wolves be considered? And James has a defensive headache, and not just in FPL, because his captain Cristian Romero has given his team another one ahead of playing a Newcastle side that were beaten at home by high flying Brentford.
