Battles. Clashes. Red cards. Respect. This week Nicky and Paul are talking about rivalries. They look back on their biggest games against Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Leeds and Chelsea, take us inside the tunnels at Anfield, Highbury and Elland Road and recall what it was like to play against the likes of Steven Gerrard, Patrick Vieira, David Batty and Dennis Wise. Which was the biggest rivalry of their careers? Which rival midfielder used to do the weirdest things on the pitch? And which was the one club they felt Sir Alex Ferguson really disliked? Along the way, they discuss whether they got on with their club rivals when on England duty, recall how Nicky had to protect Gary Neville from an angry Feyenoord front man, Paul reveals just how big a secret his return from retirement against Manchester City was and they discuss whether they would ever have joined a rival. FIFA unites World Cup winners and club executives as teammates to study for soccer diploma

World Cup and Champions League winners are learning about the soccer industry at FIFA alongside club founders and front-office leaders. All were teammates in the classroom at the soccer body's headquarters in Zurich to study all fields of the industry for the FIFA Diploma in Club Management. Now in its third edition, the FIFA course aims to give former stars a pathway to careers off the field and better educate soccer industry executives about the players' perspective. “When we learn something, it is a great feeling. These courses give us a chance to do that,” said Juan Mata, who won a World Cup title with Spain and a Champions League with Chelsea. As a co-founder in 2017 of the socially progressive Common Goal charity, Mata's smarts already were established and he was expected to have an impactful post-playing career. However, former Argentina and Inter Milan midfielder Esteban Cambiasso cautioned in one session that some industry executives “think that if a football player develops his brain, that is a danger.” Cesc Fàbregas is studying on the course while coaching in Italy at Como, newly promoted to Serie A after a 20-year absence, where he is also a minority investor. He was hired at Como by Dennis Wise, who played for Chelsea and England, was an executive at Newcastle, and is part of the FIFA selection board for the course and helps teach it. “There are many of us that are capable of doing it and we have shown we are capable,” Wise said. “You are never too old to continue to learn.” FIFA started its diploma course in 2021 following the UEFA masters course taught since 2015 by the European soccer body with input from universities in England and France. This generation of newly retired international players typically acquired enough wealth to have serious investment options and no need to work again. Mata has a stake in Formula One team Alpine. Wise suggested the motivation for FIFA students to be educated was “not about money. It is about success and achieving certain things.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Caroline Brouwer was one of very few women working in English men's football in the 1980s - and she found her home in one of its most infamous dressing rooms. The Wimbledon team of the late 1980s featured some of the game's most intimidating players: Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise, John Fashanu. The press labelled them the 'Crazy Gang', notorious for their riotous behaviour and direct, physical tactics. Their fans loved them; the football establishment turned up their noses. But as they rose through the leagues, they became impossible to ignore. As one of Wimbledon's physiotherapists, Caroline helped the players deal with the rigours of a punishing training regime, but also lent a sympathetic ear away from the dressing room. Then in 1988, she was on the touchline as the team faced their greatest challenge: an FA Cup final against Liverpool, the newly crowned champions of England. The Chelsea FanCast looks back, season by season, to 50 Years of Chelsea history from 1970 to the present day.Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd, Mark Meehan, Marco Worrall and Martin Wickham to look back at the 1996-97 season.Part Two of our look back at the 1996-97 season, one of the most memorable and emotional seasons in Chelsea's history, picks up the story in January, with Chelsea drawn against Liverpool, Premier League leaders, in the 4th round of the FA Cup.Chelsea are 2-0 down at half-time and it could have been 4 or 5. Gullit brings Mark Hughes on and the rest, as they say, is history. Thanks to Hughes, Zola and a Vialli brace, Chelsea forced a remarkable comeback to win 4-2 in what is one of the favourite matches of all time for many supporters. While Chelsea's league form held up well this season with impressive wins against Liverpool, West Ham, Spurs and Sunderland and a draw against Man Utd, resulting in their highest finish (6th) since 1990. But, the second half of the 96-97 season was really all about the FA Cup.A dramatic penalty by Frank LeBeouf in Extra-Time against Leicester, was followed by a routine 4-1 thumping of Portsmouth in the quarter-final. Up against bogey side Wimbledon in the Highbury semi-final, Chelsea put on the style, winning 3-1 with Zola giving the Wimbledon defence “twisted blood”.Reaching their second FA Cup final in 3 seasons, supporters believed this was Chelsea's time as they faced Middlesbrough. None of us could have predicted that Roberto Di Matteo would smash in a goal from 30 yards after just 43 seconds to calm the nerves. Eddie Newton wrapped things up on 83 minutes as Chelsea won 2-0 to secure their first trophy in 26 years and second FA Cup after 27 years. No surprise then that the player's celebrations lasted 45 mins after the trophy was handed to Dennis Wise. The supporter's celebrations lasted much, much longer! To help us celebrate 50 Years of Chelsea we've partnered with 3Retro who have a superb collection of Chelsea retro gear and are offering 10% OFF when you use the 3RETRO10 code and if you order over £50 of merch you get FREE UK delivery. For football fans of a certain age, any mention of the name Wimbledon inevitably leads their thoughts to the club's infamous "Crazy Gang". Led by Dave Bassett, a group of players that included Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise and John Fashanu shot this club from south-west London to fame with their antics on and off the pitch. The nickname was meant as both an insult and a compliment, but seldom can an unofficial moniker have loomed quite so large in the history of a football club. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Graham Hollingsworth (@GramH75) and Rodney McCain (@RodneyMcCain) to remember the story of the Crazy Gang. Ex-Chelsea midfielder and notorious scrapper Dennis Wise is the latest inductee into the 90's Football Hall of Fame. The pint-sized Englishman spent the entirety of the decade at Stamford Bridge, where he won multiple honours including the Uefa Cup Winners' Cup, the FA Cup and the League Cup, making him the club's second most successful captain behind John Terry. The Kensington native, who was also a member of the infamous 'Crazy Gang' at Wimbledon in the late eighties, had a reputation for being a shithouse as well, however, for his willingness to lunge into tackles and get involved in fights. On the latest episode of the 90's Football Hall of Fame podcast, Ste McGovern and Peter Henry are once again joined by Ste Tudor to discuss Wise's penchant for violence, pinching Nicky Butt's crown jewels, grabbing John Terry by the neck and attacking Vinnie Jones while driving. Gus talks about moving across London from Chelsea to Spurs where he eventually retired from playing football. The decision to move was an easy one for Gus, the first year being great but admits his last year wasn't enjoyable. We discuss Gus's coaching career so far; from starting as an assistant manager alongside Dennis Wise at Swindon then Leeds United to promotion with Brighton & Hove Albion, which he admits is a managerial highlight, to being sacked live while reporting on the BBC. During his time at Brighton Gus won League One Manager of the Year. Gus talks about his time at Sunderland, becoming the first Uruguayan to manage in the Premier League. He steered the club to the League Cup Final but unfortunately lost out to Manchester City. Poyet defeated José Mourinho in his first-ever home league defeat in the Premier League as Chelsea manager, a 2–1 win to Sunderland at Stamford Bridge and pulled off a miracle saving the team from relegation. We look to the future where Gus explains he aims to get back in to management, he reveals he almost took a job in Scotland at Kilmarnock FC and offers some advice to Steven Gerrard and his Rangers FC side.
