Americian fiddler Liz Knowles has been a prominent member of the Irish music scene worldwide for several decades. She's been working with Cherish the Ladies, String Sisters and Martin Hayes Quartet, just to mention a few. In addition to being a performer she is also a sought-after teacher, and it's her thoughts about practicing music that is the theme of this episode's conversation. Topics we touch on are, the concept og «single foucus», scheduling practice sessions, setting goals for your practice, the importance of giving your brain a break, how everyone's goals are different, what goes in to having a «convincing sound», how to practice for speed, and more!
Annbjørg Lien from Norway and Catriona MacDonald from Shetland have been among the most exiting fiddlers on the traditional music scene for more than 30 years. I got to speak with Annbjørg and Catriona prior to their duo show at the Norwegian national folk music venue, Riksscenen and we had an interesting chat, talking about their long relationship as friends an musical colleagues, the link between Shetland and Norway and the very important topic of gender representation and equality in the folk music scene. On this weeks episode Simon k speaks to Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from the band Altan Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is a native of the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair. Her first language is Gaelic and she has learnt many of her songs from family and neighbours as well as sourcing older material from archive facilities. She is renowned as one of the leading exponents of Donegal fiddle music and likes to promote the music which she has inherited from her late father Francie, whenever possible. She is a founding member of Cairdeas na bhFidléirí, which was set up 25 years ago to preserve and facilitate the development of the Donegal fiddling tradition for future generations. Mairéad's musical inspiration initially came from her family and neighbours, her father being a great fiddle teacher with a wealth of unusual local tunes, many learnt from his mother, Róise. She also received tuition and inspiration from Buncrana fiddle player, Dinny McLaughlin, who was a frequent visitor to her home when she was growing up. Mairéad founded Altan along with her late husband, Frankie Kennedy; from humble beginnings they brought their music to the world arena without compromising the deep musical tradition they loved. Along with her work with Altan, Mairéad is always in demand for solo work or presenting traditional music programmes on radio or television; past projects include the classic radio show The Long Note and the television series The Pure Drop and The Full Set on RTÉ1. Mairéad has recorded with other musicians such as Enya, the Chieftains, Dolly Parton, The String Sisters, T With the Maggies, and many more. Mairéad's first solo project, Imeall, was released in 2009. St. Patrick was born in England in 385AD, was captured by pirates as a child and brought to Ireland, at which time he was called to Christianity. He escaped his captors and returned to Ireland as a missionary. In his teachings, he combined Irish pagan beliefs with Christian sacraments, devising the Celtic Cross. St. Patrick is honored around the world on March 17th, the anniversary of his death in 461AD. Windy City Irish Radio pays homage to St. Patrick in a 90-minute St. Patrick's Day broadcast. Tonight we welcome Miread Nesbitt, one of the newest members of the Celtic Woman, to the WCIR studios for a live interview about the upcoming show at the Chicago Theatre on March 16th. Welcome to your weekly radio ramblings from Suwanee in the great state of Georgia. This week thanks go to Maureen Lynch again for bringing back memories of Centra's Cafe which is part of my youth that remains etched in my mind. Also thanks to Kevin in Talullah Gorge for the lovely email. I hope to have some of his music on the show soon. Music on this week's show from former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay, a classic track from Paul Brady, some great tunes from The String Sisters and Slide and great bluegrass from Jeremy Garrett.
This week on Across The Pond I have two tracks from the incredible String Sisters. The String Sisters is a collaboration of the Celtic music world’s top female fiddlers; Annbjørg Lien from Norway, Catriona Macdonald from Shetland, Liz Carroll and Liz Knowles from the US, Mairead ni Mhaonaigh (Altan) from Ireland and Emma Härdelin from Sweden. Originally brought together for a special one-time show at Glasgow’s annual Celtic Connections festival to celebrate each of their region’s musical traditions, the results of this live recording contain some of the most brilliant fiddling heard in Celtic music. On Live, the String Sisters are joined by David Milligan (piano), Conrad Ivitsky (double bass), Tore Bruvoll (guitar) and James Mackintosh (drums). This is one of most beautiful, uplifting and inspiring albums I have heard in years. So expect more tracks from it in future shows. It is on repeat mode on my iPod in the car righ now. Also on this week's show music from Dr. John, Mark Knopfler, Seamus Begley and Stephen Cooney, The Bluegrass Cardinals and more.
Catriona Macdonald is a proud bearer of one of the world's great fiddle traditions, that of the Shetland Isles, and widely respected as both a member of Blazin Fiddles, founder of String Sisters and a gifted fiddler in her own right. This Tune Up tour brings a rare chance for Catriona to play many of the traditional venues which support the vibrant folk scene in Scotland. The concerts will be based around the new material found on Catriona`s long awaited new album Over the Moon with David Milligan (piano) , Conrad Ivitsky (double bass) and James Mackintosh (drums/percussion) comprising the all star band who play on both record and tour.
