We spoke with Izzy Post Ruhland, the Marketing Director of the Enfield Fourth of July celebration, about the upcoming event. The celebration, which marks the 250th birthday of the United States, will take place from July 10-12. It features concerts, kids' activities, a parade, car show, road race, and fireworks, with the latter being the highlight, produced by Zambelli International.

In our first segment, The Indypendent's John Tarleton caught with Assemblymember Claire Valdez while she was campaigning to represent New York's 7th congressional district which spans North Brooklyn and Western Queens. Valdez has the endorsement of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and is widely considered to be the favorite in a race. Topics discussed include Valdez's background as a low-wage worker and union organizer, her history with New York City DSA, her thoughts on New York nativism, how much she would like to cut the Pentagon budget by, whether she would oppose making Hakeem Jeffries the next Democratic Speaker and what it means to her to identify as a democratic socialist. In our second segment, we talked to progressive organizers on the events they're bringing us this summer. The Trump administration is set to kick off a so-called “America 250 celebration” with a massive MAGA Rally called the 'Great American State Fair'—but so many of the musical guests backed out over its ties to Trump that it's unclear if it will still happen or who will perform, except of course for Trump himself. Meanwhile, progressive organizers, including Linda Sarsour, are moving forward with other plans. On June 27, there will be a massive mobilization in DC organized by a coalition called NEXT 250 to host events that stand for democracy, dignity, equality, truth, and collective freedom. New Yorkers will also have a chance to revisit New York City's history on June 19 & 20 at Reclamation Day: A Reunion of Hope pulled together by BLIS (Black Liberation Indigenous Sovereignty). We spoke with Trevor Smith of BLIS about the Reclamation Day event which will be held at 25 Kent Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The town of Rutland, Massachusetts is cancelling their 4th of July festivities this year. There were original concerns that the decision to cancel was over funding availability or in response to some community viewpoints. However, in a joint statement, the Rutland Fire & Police Department, the Rutland 4th of July Committee, and the Town of Rutland said the decision was strictly made because of public safety concerns, citing staffing shortages. We discussed the challenge that the town of Rutland is facing over their 4th of July celebration during a big year, where America is celebrating its 250th anniversary. On April 6, 2008, John lost his right leg to sniper fire during the battle of Shok Valley. He continued to fight alongside his brothers for four more hours earning him the Sliver Star and Purple heart. Post-injury John attended Special Forces Sniper School. Upon graduation he became the first amputee to become a Green Beret Sniper. Additionally, he has run marathons, completed death marches, and climbed mountains. In 2017 John founded Gallantry Global Logistics, a service-disabled veteran/minority owned logistics company that specializes in shipments of consequence and whose purpose is to provide the next mission to Veterans after their service to this Nation. John travels the country speaking to veterans' organizations, corporations and the public about leadership, excellence, overcoming adversity using his motto "Lean Forward, Fight Hard". To answer Douglass's question, we have to go back to the Revolution itself; to the choices Black Americans made in wartime, to the ways they read, used, and interrogated the Declaration of Independence, and to the alternative celebrations they created when the Fourth of July felt like someone else's holiday. Historians Christopher Bonner and Martha S. Jones help us explore what the Fourth of July meant for African Americans in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and how their experiences with the Fourth contributed to the larger history of the nation's founding.
