Patrick Rieger sent pictures from PITTSBURGH: "Hi Marc, Thank you so much for so many years of the podcast, Marc, and the invitation to share pictures of Irish musicians we are enjoying this Summer. I look forward to each episode. My wife and play it in the car and at home. This is John McCann, on stage at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub in Pittsburgh, on July 15. John is a regular there, and my family, friends and I always enjoy his shows. John is helping to teach our 11 year old son how to properly clap along to what our late friend, Terry Griffith, described, in jest, as annoying Irish audience participation songs. Our son doesn't have the timing down yet but he is getting better. His favorite is Whiskey in the Jar. Casey Deely joined John on stage for a couple of songs that night. There are plenty more shows to go to before Summer ends, so if you want more photos just let me know. And if you ever find yourself in Pittsburgh, my wife and I will gladly introduce you to our favorite irish pub." Sophie Wildman - Gurung emailed: "Dear Marc, I thought I'd write as I've been listening to your podcast this afternoon as I tie up the first plants in my new garden in Somerset (UK) in holes kindly dug by my magical friend Bangles (Woodland Folk). It was Bangles who first introduced me to your podcast shortly after we first met last November. We met when I was then living in Wells and he was busking 'Troika' by Sergei Prokofiev which was the peice of music I had been looking for, to fit in with 'I believe in Father Christmas' by Greg Lake, that I had been working on. Since then we have been jamming together regularly (mainly folk), often at his spot in the woods, sometimes around the folk nights nearby, with him on his fiddle and me on folk harp (22 strings) and singing. You recently played a recording he'd sent in of some crows so I thought I'd send in one he did of me playing a verse from 'Longlife and Sucess to the Farmer' (quite appropriate for this time of year and my afternoons activities although as an advocate of 'no - dig gardening' I'm not a fan of ploughs,) accompanied by probably the same crows  -  warning us if there are walkers nearby. Maybe with a bit more practise we'll get 'I believed in Father Christmas' together to send you, fingers crossed in time for Christmas! Really enjoying your podcasts, thank you. I've been a fan of Celtic music as long as I can remember. My family is originally from Cornwall which may have something to do with it and obviously lots of music for lever harp (which I've been playing since I was 10) is Celtic. So long may the podcast continue, play on! Kind regards" Woodland Folk sent some pictures and wrote: "Heard bout Ur scifirish on band camp.... inspired... One of the first videos I saw online when I had a skylark(not a violin or fiddle but I respect it greatly for teaching me the tentative mechanics),an Irish man with a fiddle on his knee, looking into the camera said "it's love".... Wisdom many could learn from..." woodland folk sent another photo: "I feel I have been out of the loop, looking forward to making up for this by listening back to a few old faithful episodes (man of the house/2 hour fiddle episode and all...) and a few new ones on a 9 hour coach trip to moffat in Scotland,to see my son who is now a strapping, baritone 17 yrs..... Time is an odd thing.... I tentatively tryed a little Fahey in wells yesterday, though simple with few embellishments....in a way the simplest tunes are the hardest to play,Irish washerwoman or silver spear are deceptive and pretty...... I find Music the grandest analogy for life..."

Hello and welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast where classical musicians share the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life when the concert halls shut their doors and the music stopped. I'm Cliodhna Ryan, violinist, member of the Irish Chamber Orchestra and freelancer, and in this episode, I'm chatting to Caitríona Frost. Caitríona is a freelance percussionist whose career started at the age of 4 playing an egg shaker with the local concert band. She performs regularly with Ireland's leading orchestras and has toured extensively with Celtic Woman and Declan O'Rourke. She is a founding member of Bangers & Crash percussion ensemble, which is led by Alex Petcu. Recently Caitríona has been composing works for percussion that are steeped in the Irish tradition, drawing on her early experiences of playing fiddle and tin whistle. In 2020, she was awarded an Arts Council of Ireland Music Bursary, as well as a residency at Roadbooks, Co.Cork. She has just returned from a residency at Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris, funded by Music Network. Caitríona's bitter memory is of her work suddenly stopping, and her relationship ending. Her sweet memory is of a wonderful Christmas Day spent with family in West Cork. There were gifts exchanged, sea swims, and lots of love and laughter. Much of her experience at this time felt bittersweet, as her extraordinary artistic and personal journey came about through the pain of her relationship break up, devastating loss of work, and the sudden impact the pandemic had on her entire way of living. This conversation was recorded in September 2021. Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to SHARON SHANNON as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.    "Little Christmas" is the final episode of 2020. It features Christmas music from The Jig Is Up, Cynthia Shelhart, Steel Clover, Abbots Cross, Liz Madden, Laura MacKenzie, Reilly, Sharon Shannon, deCeadaoin, Tiffany Schaefer, Emish, Stephanie Claussen, Celtic Woman, Runa, The Selkie Girls   The show is generously brought to you by the Patrons of the Celtic Christmas Podcast on Patreon. Interestingly, although she can and does play Irish music, her career has continually spanned many different musical genres, always bringing her own style and background along with her for the ride. She is an experienced and dedicated musician, and has worked with some huge names in the industry. Among the people/bands she has recorded and performed with, you'll find well-respected (and well-known!) Irish names like Sinead O'Connor, The Chieftains, Shane McGowan, and even Bono. In keeping with her genre-jumping style though, you'll also see her name has appeared alongside other musical heavyweights, like Jackson Browne and Wille Nelson. As if that isn't testament enough to Shannon's musical abilities, she has also collaborated with John Prine, Natalie McMaster, and even Japan's Kodo Drummers!   Good musicians are always eager to expand their circle and play with other talented people, and this is something that defines Sharon Shannon. It is also something that has allowed her to grow, and that has seasoned her as a musical artist. From classical, to Cajun, to rap, Shannon has embraced all forms of music and in turn, they have informed her approach and style along the way. Interestingly, the Irish influence always does seem to shine through though, no matter who she has paired herself with!   Shannon has a well-rounded selection of albums, but with the holidays quickly approaching, nothing is more appropriate than than the Christmas single, “Christmas Time Again”, which features her accordion play front and center. It's a nice, jolly romp—a bit more updated than the old, standard carols--but with the same spirit of fun. Pick this one up to add something different to your holiday playlist, or to gift to a friend or relative that loves expanding their collection of Christmas music. After all, there's always a little bit of room for the accordion…right?   Find out more about Sharon Shannon at sharonshannon.com   If you hear music you love in the Celtic Christmas Podcast, then support the artists. Welcome to Hang the Holly. Not only does she have a cache of her own solo albums, but she is an actress and musical theater performer as well. In addition, she has done voiceover work and it's easy to see why—her gentle, bright, clear voice is a pleasure to listen to, whether she is speaking or singing. Madden has delved deeply into studying the things she is interested in, and holds a Masters degree in music, and she is working toward one in theology as well. Her list of accomplishments really does go on and on, and they include everything from songwriting credits for film and television, to producing a live show, to winning multiple awards throughout the course of her career.   Such a full and total immersion in the arts shows fierce passion and a dedication to creating, and this is apparent in Madden's musical history. She has contributed to 12 albums, and is actively involved in collaborating with other musical artists on a regular basis. Her albums tend to favor simple arrangements that allow her beautiful voice to be the centerpiece, with instruments serving as a support, rather than the central focus. It works well, and Madden's voice is definitely worthy of having a place that is front and center. She has certainly earned it, developing her voice as a well-honed instrument in its own right. Not all singers are blessed with such an even measure of talent and passion, but this is a singer that certainly has a heaping spoonful of both.   Her holiday album, "Liz Madden's Christmas Celebration" offers nearly an hour of music that ranges from delights such as the French carol Noel Nouvelet to some of the more expected holiday favorites like Joy to the World, and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The satisfying mixture of simple arrangements and a classically trained voice make this singer's holiday album a perfect choice for the season. A well thought-out grouping of 17 tracks provides a solid Christmas soundtrack that would make a terrific gift—or would blend in well with nearly any rotation of holiday music you may already own. Whatever you do, be sure not to miss Madden's version of Silent Night—it's a song that was meant to be covered by a vocalist with her range, and she does it beautifully, hitting those high notes with confidence and clarity.   Find out more about Liz Madden at LizMadden.co.   If you hear music you love in the Celtic Christmas Podcast, then support the artists. Hang the Holly is an inside look into the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. The first teaser episode of the 2020 season came out last week. I want to share a little bit about one of the artists in the show, namely Celtic Woman.   But first, the first episode of 2020 is show #55. It features Celtic Christmas music from eight Celtic artists with Christmas holiday music, including: Angus Mohr, Don Grieve, The Irish Rovers, Marc Gunn, Alexander James Adams, The Wee Heavies, Matthew Young, Celtic Woman.   Show #55 is a shorter episode. Most shows will be about an hour long. They also no available on Spotify or YouTube. So if you want to hear those shows, please subscribe the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com.   Let's get on with the show.   Are you searching for a GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum, Celtic music group with a decidedly feminine sound to fill your home with warmth during the Christmas season? If so, you don't have to look any further than Celtic Woman. Many fans of Irish music already adore this celebrated band, and with several Christmas albums to choose from, there's something for everyone to listen to during the upcoming holidays! Since the band's debut in 2005, this group has had a PBS special, performed at the White House, and even appeared on ABC-TV's Dancing with the Stars. All this from a group that was originally created for a single event! That tells you a little something about how special they are…   Although there is plenty of traditional appeal in Celtic Woman's sound, they also bring a more contemporary flavor into the mix. This can be ideal for those who are searching for something fresh for the holiday season. You won't have to worry about it being too modern, but you will hear an updated take on many of your seasonal favorites, and you may even hear some new tunes too! This, and the fact that they are an all-female group, might make a CD or DVD of theirs a perfect Christmas gift for someone on your list as well. There are a number of them out there – 15 CDs and 11 DVDs to choose from. Four of these CDs are dedicated to Christmas music.   Celtic Woman's A Christmas Celebration album made it onto Billboard's World Music Chart in 2006, and it remained there for 112 weeks in a row, so that would definitely be one to check out if you haven't already. It's the earliest offering of Christmas music by the band, and it was followed by Home for Christmas in 2012. The Best of Christmas was released in 2017, and their last holiday album was The Magic of Christmas in 2019, featuring songs such as 'The Wexford Carol' and ‘Deck the Halls', among others.   Fans of the band might find a bit of solace in listening to these CDs since Celtic Woman's much-anticipated 2020 tour has been cancelled due to COVID-19. While nothing is quite like live music, unfortunately this year a recording will have to do. New listeners can opt to add yet another layer to their Celtic Christmas spirit with music by these lovely ladies. Their angelic voices make the Christmas music shine, and each of these CDs has a decent number of tracks on them. It makes for a good introduction to the band's sound, and will be a super add to the rotation of holiday tunes each year going forward.   What better way is there to celebrate the end to this long year than hearing Celtic Christmas songs drifting through the house as you decorate?    To get a taste of the band's sound and their Christmas songs, be sure to subscribe to the Celtic Christmas Podcast. The show is free though it is supported by Celtic music fans on Patreon. I have featured Celtic Woman many times on past episodes. And they will be on again on future episodes.    Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com . Nollaig shona daoibh.

In Today's episode, Stacy and Sam talk about connecting with the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine through music with Celia Farran: The Everyday Goddess. Singer/Songwriter/Comedienne Celia has been described as “A cross between an Earthy Enya, Joan Baez, and Tina Fey.” She dishes up the most delicious concoction of the silly and sacred, delighting audiences across the nation. In addition to having the kind of silky smooth voice often associated with classic Celtic Singers, such as “Celtic Woman”, Celia excels at comedy. She often transforms right on stage into one or more of her alter-egos-whose antics typically leave the audience howling with laughter. With powerful, heart-felt vocals and wacky comedic improvisations, the audience never knows what will happen with Celia on stage. Celia has opened for notable authors such as Neale Donald Walsch, Marianne Williamson & Dr. Masaru Emoto, and her song, “Symbol” has been named the “Anthem for the Veteran Pentacle Quest” in support of Religious tolerance & acceptance. No matter how many times you think you've seen Celia, you can never predict what she will do and how deeply she can reach into the soul of an audience.
