It's turbulent times for the wind sector in the US, but the outlook is better across the pond. What can the US learn from Europe?

The Interchange

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2025 41:49

Nearly 150 days into President Trump's second term, the outlook for wind energy in the United States - particularly offshore wind - is increasingly bleak. Trump had pledged to end offshore wind development, and now the House Ways and Means Committee is proposing a phase-out of tax credits for renewables by 2031 - a move that would severely impact an already struggling wind sector (over on our sister podcast Energy Gang, we discuss the bill and what it means for renewables – check out that episode once you're finished here).Only three offshore wind projects have come online in US waters, with 4 GW currently under construction. In 2024, total wind installations reached a ten-year low at just 5.2 GW. By contrast, Europe has surged ahead, having built 35 GW of offshore wind capacity - ten times the US total – emphasising the stark differences in policy and financing frameworks.Still, there are glimmers of hope: President Trump recently lifted a stop-work order on a $5 billion offshore wind farm off the coast of New York, following lobbying from Governor Kathy Hochul. The project, led by Norwegian company Equinor, is expected to power 500,000 homes by 2027. However, with developer confidence sinking, experts warn that the stop-start nature of US policy continues to undermine long-term momentum in the sector. To forecast the next few years for wind in the US, host Sylvia Leyva Martinez – principal analyst at Wood Mackenzie – is joined by analyst Stephen Maldonado. They explore the policy and technology that's holding back deployment of offshore wind in the US.Plus, looking across the Atlantic to Europe, Sylvia talks to WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson, about the financing frameworks for wind in Europe.Sylvia, Stephen and Giles talk through the lessons for developers and financers: with uncertainty around tax credits and shifting policies, there may be a shift in resources to more advanced projects, putting early-stage ones on hold. Repowering old wind turbines is an option too; Giles explains how. And making use of domestic supply chain strengths is key – compared to solar, wind has more domestic supply chain support.Follow the show wherever you're listening to it now, and tell us what you think, we're on X and Bluesky @interchangeshowSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode we're talking with Charlotte Knee -- a brand spanking new mom, hailing all the way from Ireland, who welcomed her little bundle of joy in a home birth. In this episode we get to hear some perspective on home birth in Ireland! Charlotte was kind enough to chat with us while her 6-week old baby daughter Iza hung out in the background. We understand the life of fresh parenthood, and we know time is one of the most precious things at this state. So we consider it an honor that she spent some of it with us to share her awesome story. Charlotte's story is an example of how we continue to stay fascinated with birth in general, especially home birth. Because it's so different everywhere you go. Living in the states, you just tend to hear about the variations in laws and practices from state to state. But there's a whole big world out there! Charlotte has never been a big fan of hospitals. And get this - she was born at home! So continuing the tradition, she hired a private midwife and she and her husband Max planned for their home birth. Another cool part of Charlotte's life - she and her husband live in a shared house. So community is very important to her, and has played a big part in her journey of pregnancy and motherhood. We learned all kinds of new stuff from her - like using a tens unit and laughing gas during labor. We're totally inspired by Charlotte's style. And you need to check the show notes on the website because she and her family are pretty adorable! In this episode I am talking with Kat Farrants from the UK about her successes with her Australian Shepherds in high levels of competition. We spend our time talking about dog sports and mindset and all things Aussie competition. It's a great conversation and I am sure you will enjoy more stories about the working Australian Shepherd.  Kat Farrants has owned Aussies for 25 years, and bred for 20 years. She started in obedience with Shanti, her homebred Aussie, at pre-beginners, and in just 4 years, we were working Championship Class, and were the highest placed female Aussie in the crufts Obedience Championships. Her journey with Shanti was meteoritic. She quickly made Shanti's daughter, Gracie the third female Aussie Obedience Champion in history. Gracie is the only living Aussie Obedience Champion, and the only Aussie working Championship Class. For context, Kat has now competed at the Crufts Obedience Championships Five times, and in four of those times, she was the ONLY competitor of females to not have collies. This year, Gracie's been sick, so isn't at the Crufts Obedience Championships, and there are NO DOGS OTHER THAN COLLIES competing! UK obedience is a super tough tough sport, and champions are very few and far between. It's been amazing to have the first homebred female Aussie Champions and first Mother and Daughter champions. Gracie now competes in IGP (Schutzhund) and is the only Aussie to qualify IGP3 in the UK in history, and she has competed at National level in IGP. We are working towards the qualifiers for the world championships, where she is competing against Malis and GSD's and is aiming to be the first Aussie worldwide to compete at the IGP World Championships. Kat occasionally breeds, under the Solarwind affix, and she runs the Mindset for Dog Sports Membership, she is known as the Dog Sports Coach. The secret to Kat's success? Is it's all in the mind (and with Aussies this is the most important thing of all!) Peter Wood emailed about Stubby Shillelaghs: "Hi Mark, I wrote a few years ago about playing the show with my wife in the car on dates and on our wedding day, and now we are expecting our first child. We don't listen to the show together much anymore, but when we go to the Renaissance Faire we played it (just missed you again!) and I put it on when we went for a swim on a summer evening when she wanted music without getting interrupted by YouTube Music ads. Since this year's Renaissance festival she's asked a few times for Tartanic when she's been in the mood for "my" music. Recently I was listening to a different podcast that plays novelty songs around a theme (Bitslap with KBC if you're curious), and the theme of the week was Drinking, so of course some Celtic - sounding music came up, and for part of a set I thought I was listening to your show! Of the two songs in particular that got me confused, the first was the Vodka Song by Stubby Shillelaghs (https://youtu.be/h9YRbJSbPw0) which I'm unsure if it or the band have ever been played on your show. It was followed by Sober on St. Patrick's Day, and at first I thought I might have heard it on your show, but then when it got going I realized it wouldn't have fit in on your family friendly show. Turns out it's by Psychostick. I know you've got ties to the FuMP collective so you're probably already aware of it. The Vodka Song at least would be a fun one to play if you've got the permission." Patrick Rieger emailed photos from Ohio Renaissance Festival: "Hi Marc, My family and I, along with our friend Chenna from Nashville, spent Labor Day Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival, three days of faire. Ohio is a big faire with plenty of celtic musicians, but even with three days we didn't see them all. We did see Captain John Stout (aka Richard Brentar), Donal Hinely, The Harper and the Minstrel, The Toasted Clover, The Jackdaws, Bettina Baudville, Seán Nós, and The Lady Victoria. I had never heard of a nose harmonica until I met Bettina Baudville; that is what she is playing in the photo. Also I never heard celtic music played on a ukulele until I met The Toasted Clover. Donal Hinely was featured on the Renaissance Festival Podcast years ago when you were still a host, but until this year I had not seen or heard him in person." Despite three long days of working the faire, Victoria was able to join us for a quick dinner one night. And before the weekend was done, the four of us already planned to go back next year."

"Because the ducks aren't going to let you [overharvest them]," replied Mike Swan matter of factly when asked how there could still possibly be healthy waterfowl populations in the United Kingdom. The UK is not quite twice the size of Mississippi, bag limits and shooting hours are nonexistent, baiting is allowable, and anything with a bore diameter less than 2 inches is considered a shotgun--yes, they can still shoot 2-, 4-, and 8-gauge shotguns, and even punt gunning is still practiced by a few die hards.  What's it like hunting here? A long-time biologist for Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, Swan vividly describes his lifetime hunting and managing waterfowl in a landscape that was completely tamed a very long time ago. And how has duck hunting changed in the decades since he first started hunting? While his sobering answer is surprising, the entire discussion somewhat challenges "the sky is falling" narratives here on our own side of the pond where we are benefactors of an envy-of-the-world North American Model.     Visit MOJO's Duck Season Somewhere Podcast Sponsors:   MOJO Outdoors  Alberta Professional Outfitters Society Benelli Shotguns BOSS Shotshells Bow and Arrow Outdoors Ducks Unlimited  Flash Back Decoys  GetDucks.com HuntProof Premium Waterfowl App Inukshuk Professional Dog Food  onX Maps Tetra Hearing Tom Beckbe USHuntList.com Voormi     Please subscribe, rate and review Mojo's Duck Season Somewhere podcast, let us know your thoughts in comments. Jeffrey Evans emailed a photo: "Hey Marc, Greetings from Louisville KY. Just wanted to share with you since I thought you would appreciate it. Last Sat (10/12), my wife and I participated in a Trunk or Treat that was hosted by the Shelby Country Humane Society and as you can see in the picture, we went heavily into a cat theme. I found a cat based trunk or treat kit that was cat centric, we took our Sphynx cat that we rescued through a TNR effort and added various cat base items inside the trunk area including pages from a Star Trek Cat calendar and my wife even dressed up as a cat where as I simply dressed as a TNRer. To top it all off, I even set up a speaker playing a cat song playlist consisting of your Whiskers in The Jar album and Lord of the Pounce. Unfortunately, everyone was so distracted by our cat, nobody noticed the music.  But we enjoyed it! ***Quick side note: on the episode web pages, every spot where you list the email address to send feedback to or band submissions, the ".net" is left off.***" Eric Guarin (gwa - reen) emailed: "Mark, I heard you mention a shortfall - I didn't catch the details, probably in a noisy environment. I've been listening since Episode 6, in multiple states and countries, from warm St. Lucia to cold Iceland to the Rock of Gibraltar, and on planes across both oceans. Thanks for all this! To help the shortfall I upped to the Song Henger tier; keep up the great music. Slainte, Larry Budd emailed: "Hey Mark: I just  shared your podcast with friends. We will be traveling next week to Ireland! And I took a break from raking to thank you for your work on our shared heritage. Any must - sees, particularly musical, would be appreciated.
