Hello Young Lovers!Welcome to a special Saint Valentine's Day TWOFER from The Splendid Bohemians:Today we're featuring two enchanting, encyclopedic British song stylists: Anne Briggs and Elvis Costello. First up: the majestic Ms. Briggs.SHE MOVED THROUGH THE FAIR by Anne Briggs (Topic, 1963)Barefoot and bedraggled, Anne Briggs became the muse of the British Traditional Folk Boom in the early nineteen sixties. Her short performance career of mystical magic was retired at age 27, leaving behind a limited, but monumental discography. I first heard She Moved Through the Fair on Irish Heartbeat, made by Van Morrison and the Chieftains, and it's ethereal message left me paralyzed with romantic longing. But, that was just the prelude to my discovery of the plangent tones from this Goddess of acapella Celtic song. OPPORTUNITY by Elvis Costello and the Attractions (Columbia, 1980)This cut from my favorite Elvis Costello album, GET HAPPY!!! Is R&B funky with a Stax inspired beat and tasty organ punctuations by Steve Nieve. The music is absolutely giddy, and although the acrid lyrics - (so typical of the former Declan Patrick MacManus during this early period) - may be pessimistic and sneering, the overall effect is energizing. In fact, the recurring refrain: “this is your big opportunity….”, with the caveat: “don't turn around” indicates the intense, forward-looking dedication with which this artistic social climber fueled his rocket-like ascent to the firmament of the musical masters. Although Elvis succeeded handily, his early anti-authoritarian stance reminds me of so many other also-rans that, in preparation for their inevitable fall to irrelevance and obscurity, padded the ground below with a protective “fuck you” attitude. But, you knew all along that underneath the bravado that they really craved the gatekeepers recognition. The jaunty music belies the message of the sour lyrics, implying an alternate, more inspiring interpretation: Be alert! Recognize your opportunities and grab them while you can.

Cady Coleman, a former NASA astronaut, visited Atlantic Technological University (ATU) last Wednesday, delivering an inspiring talk to over 250 secondary school students from across the region. The event held at ATU's Sligo campus highlighted the importance of science and space exploration and the need for more young people to explore careers in STEM subjects. The visit was organised by Dr Jerry Bird, Head of the Faculty of Science at ATU Sligo, in collaboration with the American Embassy in Ireland. Coleman, who is one of just approximately 600 people in human history to have journeyed beyond Earth, captivated the audience as she recounted her time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and her experiences during her missions to space. She shared insights into the dedication, education, and hard work required to become an astronaut, encouraging the students to embrace science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects to pursue their dreams. Coleman's journey into space began with NASA in 1992, and she flew two space shuttle missions - STS-73 in 1995 and STS-93 in 1999 - before spending nearly six months aboard the ISS in 2010. Over the course of her career, she logged more than 180 days in space, conducting numerous scientific experiments and even performing a flute duet with the Chieftains and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull from space, a first in the history of music. Dr Jerry Bird expressed his gratitude for Coleman's visit, "We are incredibly honoured to have Cady Coleman here at ATU Sligo. Her career with NASA and her time in space serves as a real inspiration to the students, staff, and the entire community. She shows just how far a love of science can take you, and her message will resonate with these young minds for years to come." In addition to her educational talk, Coleman participated in a lively traditional Irish music session hosted by ATU's Traditional Music Society. To commemorate her visit, the society presented her with a tin whistle, a fitting tribute to the former astronaut, who is an accomplished musician herself. Since the 17th century, nearly 10 million Irish people left their homes for an uncertain life abroad. While stories of Irish settlement in the United States and Canada are well-known, the lives of tens of thousands of Irish people who settled in Latin America are much more obscure. In the first Gladio Free Europe solo episode, Liam runs through the long history of the Irish presence in Latin America. As early as the time of Shakespeare many Irish people began pledging their service to the formidable Spanish Empire, out of desperation, defiance, or duty to their Catholic faith. These Irish volunteers, later termed "the Wild Geese," were deployed on Spanish military adventures across the entire known world, but saw their most notable success in the American colonies. Some Irishmen would settle in Latin America as members of the colonial elite, while others would shake the foundations of the Spanish empire and push toward independence. The Irish experience in Latin America would have its most brilliant moment in the middle of the 19th century, after Spain had been evicted from the American continent and a new hegemon emerged. At the start of the Mexican-American war, a group of mistreated Irish recruits and survivors of the great famine defected from American service to join the enemy. Driven by both Catholic and republican ideals, these men would form their own unit to defend the Mexican state against United States aggression. Although the San Patricio Battalion would be short-lived, they played a crucial role in halting the American advance and their sacrifice is a testament to over two centuries of Hispanic-Hibernian cooperation. And it's a shame, because they're good songs and sometimes, take Young Hunting by Serious Kitchen (Which was in your best of the year podcasts more than once) it's the only Celtic rendition of the song on the internet. I managed to buy the last Tig! Album off the internet, but it's looking bad for some of my other favorites. We're losing years of Celtic music, and it's a shame, especially since I know that the members of Serious Kitchen and others are still around. I don't suppose I'm missing a way to buy these albums. I really hope I am. I don't suppose you could use your amazing Celtfather connections and reach out to some of the people of these bands and see if they'd put on Bandcamp? Or perhaps a huge "Best of the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast" album with some of these lost treasures? They're some of the best music I've heard. Thanks, Nathanael"

You mentioned in a recent episode to send in travel pictures, so here are a few happy snaps from my recent wanderings. I've played the flute for many years, with my favourite type of music to play being anything Celtic. However, while in the city of Cusco, I met a Peruvian flute maker and fell in love with the sound of the low Andean meditation flute. I'm already thinking of creative ways I can blend the Andean flute with a Celtic sound. I'd be open to any suggestions! I've attached a photo of me playing the Andean flute at Laguna Churup, it was quite a hike to get there but well worth the view. Aside from that, I get very badly motion sick on buses and unfortunately this is the main mode of transport to get around Peru. I found that zoning out by listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast was incredibly helpful on long haul bus rides, so thank you for helping me to prevent motion sickness while travelling! Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Dec. 17  Moundsville's name reflects its ancient roots. New River Gorge park officials prepare to open a new rock climbing area to the public. And find the perfect location for your film in Almost Heaven. #YesWV #1 – From WTRF-TV –  West Virginia is known for its Appalachian culture and storied mountain communities, but there is an even older side to the region, one that is ancient and pre-dates the founding of the state itself. During the Early Woodland Period between 3,000 and 2,000 years ago, the Adena people left their mark through ancient building sites. There are 424 recorded prehistoric mounds in what is now West Virginia, according to the West Virginia Encyclopedia. The city of Moundsville is named after an ancient structure, the Grave Creek Mound, the largest earthen, conical mound in the Western hemisphere.  An 1838 exploration of the mound, found two burial vaults with human remains and grave goods. Chieftains and shamans were typically buried in mounds while ordinary people were burned and buried in log tombs, archeologists determined. Multiple mounds of varying sizes once made up the landscape of what is now Moundsville, but these structures sadly were destroyed through farming and treasure hunters. However, you can still view the Grave Creek Mound and learn more about it at the onsite museum. The West Virginia Land Trust recently secured access to the 40-acre preserve located near the National Park Service Visitor Center in Fayetteville. WVLT Conservation Project Manager Adam Webster says the site won't officially open to the public until sometime next year, once they've raised more funds to make the area more publicly accessible. Webster said future plans for the property include parking, signage and hiking opportunities. “There's a couple of overlooks especially in the fall when the leaves are down, and you can see the New River. It's just another really pretty spot along the Gorge that people can enjoy,” he said. Written in 1919, this story of the Easter Rising and the contrasting World War has gone around the world. During her Irish dancing career, she competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Obviously, I am the host of this podcast. But I'm gonna read my current bio on my website like I've done with others. Marc Gunn is a Rhythm & Folk songwriter who fuses Irish and Scottish folk songs with pop culture. One brewery called it Sci F'Irish music. His musical weapon of choice is the autoharp. He breathes acoustic Rock and Roll into this folk instrument and adds a bellowing taste of rhythm & blues. Gunn found musical inspiration performing Irish drinking songs. He learned the art of performing at Renaissance faires and from his childhood idol, Elvis Presley, who said, “You've got to put on a show to draw a crowd.” His concerts are fun filled with sing along songs that get the audience's feet tapping. And now for my song… I first heard the song “Peggy Gordon” from a cassette of Irish Drinking Songs I found at Half-Price Books in Austin, Texas. I learned most of my early Irish song repertoire from that album, songs like “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Big Strong Man, “Wild Rover”, “Bog Down in the Valley” and lots more. Their version of “Peggy Gordon” was short, but memorable. I played it on and off for many years. I remember singing it at a pub in Switzerland when I met Heidi and Stef of the Celtic band Bow Triplets. In July 2009, I met my future wife, Gwen, while touring in Virginia. We had this whirlwind romance and began talking on the phone every day and went to see each other as much as possible even while I was out on tour. I was completely mesmerized by her. A few weeks later, I was back in Austin. I was scheduled to record my next studio album with Rich Brotherton. He's an incredible engineer and had done some brilliant work for Ed Miller and lots of top-notch artists in Texas. I was having trouble singing the song. I was pitchy and my voice lacked any real emotion. The lyrics have this great feeling of love and longing. Which is exactly the feeling I was having with Gwen so far away. And so… I closed my eyes, focused on Gwen, and sang. To this day, I still tell people it is one of my best recordings. Because I feel like I nailed it. And then to top it off, Rich Brotherton added some absolutely beautiful guitar work, as he did throughout that album.
