According to tradition, if it rains on Saint Swithun's bridge in Winchester on St. Swithun's day — 15 July — it will continue for 40 days. But who was the real Swithun? And why has his historical importance as an Anglo-Saxon bishop of Winchester been overshadowed by his reputation as a miracle worker? In this episode of Gone Medieval, Dr. Cat Jarman finds out more about Swithun from Associate Professor Karl Christian Alvestad from the University of South-Eastern Norway. This episode was edited by Matthew Peaty and produced by Rob Weinberg. That Shakespeare Life
St. Swithun's Day with Philippa Brewell (Ep 198)

700 years before Shakespeare a man named Saint Swithun established his place in history mostly because of the miracles that surrounded his death and burial. St. Swithun would capture the imagination of writers for centuries after his death, with one of his most famous miracles being recorded in a book called Historia major from the 15th century. The early 13th century saw a shrine built to St. Swithun was not demolished until 1538, just 26 years before Shakespeare was born. This imposing figure on the English consciousness was celebrated during Shakespeare's lifetime and continues to be celebrated today in England, every July 15.  In exploring the history of St. Swithun's day, I discovered one man who was potentially named after the popular St. Swithun who is not only a contemporary to William Shakespeare, but would himself go on to be canonized in the 20th century by Pope Paul VI. Swithun Wells was a Roman catholic martyr during the life of Elizabeth I. His family was known to house and shelter catholic recusants during Shakespeare's lifetime, with Swithun Wells was executed by Elizabeth I for housing catholics. Here today to give us all these details about the holiday, how it was celebrated for Shakespeare, the history of the other Swithun from Shakespeare's lifetime, and even what science is behind how the holiday is celebrated today is expert in British History and our friend, Philippa Brewell.

St Swithun's archivist Elly Crookes talks to Julie Dypdal about the school's eventful history and its fascinating archives-which include letters from Christina Rosetti and William Wilberforce.Educating girls wasn't a priority in Victorian England but the pioneering founders of St Swithun's School in Winchester helped to change that in Hampshire. By the end of the 19th century its female pupils were studying not just reading and writing but science, economics, engineering and money management. A feisty spirit was encouraged among pupils: when school buildings were requisitioned for troops during the two world wars, the girls played and beat Canadian soldiers at lacrosse and taught GIs to play cricket. For more information, including show notes and a transcript, please visit our website: https://www.winchesterheritageopendays.org/hampshire-histbites-episodes

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) David Waldman and Greg Dworkin hope you have had the balmiest of St. Swithun’s Days today. You know that nightmare where you’re back at school, but you’re only wearing underwear and you’re about to transmit a debilitating disease to your mom? Same! Texas teachers are living the nightmare, writing out their wills before the fall. Voters do not support forcing schools to open. Voters do not support Gop Governors handling of COVID-19. Voters do not support Gop Senators handling of COVID-19. Voters do not support Donald Trump’s handling of anything. Israelis have already reopened their schools and have a lot to teach us about how we should not be reopening our schools. COVID-19 deaths are jumping up in those states that you might have guessed would be especially susceptible, even if you made your guess a hundred years ago or so. Decedents of the Confederate states still hiding out in Brazil like antebellum cosplay, coronavirus infections, and no-mask freedoms about as much as their red state cousins. Those who have worked at the CDC assure us that no president has ever politicized science the way Trump has. The CDC hasn’t seen nothing yet, and if Trump gets his way, never will. If you can think of a way Donald Trump could care less, drop him a note, he might be interested in that. Otherwise, he is laser-focused on two objectives: watching the world burn, and burning the world, and he isn’t about to leave until he is finished. Donald Trump is finished, by the way. The nickname Donald can call Smiling, Uncle, Cup o’ Joe Biden is “Winning”. Coronavirus might be transmitted to you in the air, 2 days after an infected person was in the area. Scientists aren’t sure if it can open doors or use a weapon, yet. One thing is certain, Kanye West can’t save us now.

We're out, on location this time. Producer Will has released us from his grimy hovel, out into the fields, to enjoy the quite beautiful festival of arts, noise and freedom that was Supernormal 2014. We start counting down to Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in November by looking back over the history of Doctor Who, from 1963 down to the present! In this episode, Caleb and Swithun go right back to the very beginning, to discuss An Unearthly Child, (or if you prefer, 100,000BC or The Tribe of Gum, Hartnell overall story titles being what they are...) William Hartnell was the original Doctor - but is he the original and best? We consider how the Doctor evolved from mysterious and unreliable mad scientist into the unconventional action hero he is today. Plus, how has the role of the companions changed since the original TARDIS crew of Ian, Barbara and Susan, as played by William Russell, Jacqueline Hill and Carole Anne Ford. Join us as we celebrate the classic opening episode where it all began, plus reconsider those neglected cavemen episodes that follow... or should we skip to the Daleks already? How do you feel An Unearthly Child holds up after all these years? Are you a fan of the First Doctor, and what are your favourite stories from his era? If you're a recent Doctor Who fan who came to it since it's 2005 return, what is it like to go back and uncover Doctor Who's past? Let us know your thoughts below!
