Why Your Business Is Always Short on Cash (Even When You're Busy)with John Scott Find Rocky Lalvani @ www.ProfitComesFirst.com or email him at rocky@profitcomesfirst.com Make more, work less video: https://youtu.be/ Your business is busy. Revenue is coming in. The team is working hard. So why does cash still feel tight? In this episode of Profit Answer Man, Rocky Lalvani sits down with John Scott, Partner at Anders and leader of their Virtual CFO services for law firms, to unpack why profitable businesses still struggle with cash flow. This conversation goes beyond theory. It breaks down the real financial levers that drive profit, capacity, and long-term stability. Learning Insights Many businesses discount the finance function by assigning bookkeeping to someone without proper expertise or keeping books months behind You cannot make smart business decisions without current and accurate financial data Working capital targets should range between 10 percent and 30 percent of expected annual revenue depending on risk Setting aside 40 percent of monthly profit in a separate tax account prevents emotional and financial stress at tax time Two to five additional productive hours per week per employee can dramatically increase profitability in service firms Capacity determines pricing power. If you are at full capacity, you either raise prices or say no Revenue drivers exist in every business. You must identify and track yours instead of relying on gut instinct Segregating funds such as retainers, deposits, and sales tax prevents accidental overspending Subscription pricing removes friction, encourages proactive conversations, and strengthens client relationships Cash flow problems are often operational problems such as slow billing, lack of reconciliation, or unmanaged productivity Big Takeaway Cash flow is not a mystery. It is a management discipline. When owners define cash targets, track capacity, understand revenue drivers, and keep financial data current, clarity replaces stress. Small operational improvements such as tightening billing cycles, increasing utilization by a few hours, or segregating tax funds can dramatically change the financial health of a business. Profit and cash flow improve not through luck, but through consistent attention to the right levers. Bio John C. Scott, CPA, AEP, CGMA, is a partner in tax at Anders and a leading authority in law firm financial management. With over 30 years of experience, he heads Anders' legal industry efforts for their Virtual CFO team, offering law firms the dedicated resources, forward-looking financial insight, and critical thinking they need to thrive. Author of Judicial Dollars and Cents, John specializes in helping firms optimize processes, improve profitability, and position themselves for successful succession or managing partner transitions. Drawing on deep expertise in tax planning, estate planning, and closely held business valuations, John partners with law firms to implement data-driven decision-making, streamline operations, and strengthen cash flow. His approach blends strategic foresight with handson financial leadership, ensuring firms can scale confidently and sustainably. Whether guiding a million-dollar boutique or a $30M multioffice practice, John helps ambitious legal leaders turn complexity into clarity—and profitability into lasting success. Revenue does not automatically create cash stability. The businesses that win are the ones that understand their numbers, reconcile accounts regularly, forecast using real data, and make decisions based on facts instead of feelings. We all know the story of the woman who was brought before Jesus, having been caught in the act of adultery. Jesus' response to her accusers are some of his most well known words - 'let those of you without sin cast the first stone'. This is an example of someone looking into the face of Jesus and seeing the grace of God extended to humanity. It's also the story of how our worst days can also turn into our best days. Raymond Prior and Chase Cooper kick off 2026 with a wide-ranging conversation with John Scott Rattan, coach at Congressional Country Club and a full-time presence in the world of elite competitive golf.John Scott breaks down what coaching Tour players actually looks like—travel, remote support, building a weekly “blueprint,” and why the goal is to eliminate anything new once the tournament starts. They get into the real separators at that level: how players handle adversity, how coaches ask better questions, and why confidence beats correctness when it's time to compete. The episode also goes beyond mechanics into the parts most people don't talk about: permission to give unfiltered feedback, the coach-player relationship, why players change coaches, and how social media can help—or quietly hurt—performance. From concept vs swing thought, to in-event adjustments, to the myths that won't die in golf instruction, this one is equal parts Tour coaching reality and high-level coaching philosophy. You can find John Scott Rattan at Congressional Country Club in the Washington, DC area, at JSRgolf.com, and on Instagram @jsr_golf.
This episode, first aired in 2019, brings you the story of John Scott, the professional hockey player that every fan loved to hate. A tough guy. A brawler. A goon. But when an impish pundit named Puck Daddy called on fans to vote for Scott to play alongside the world's greatest players in the NHL All-Star Game, Scott found himself facing off against fans, commentators, and the powers that be. Was this the realization of Scott's childhood dreams? Or a nightmarish prank gone too far? Today on Radiolab, a goof on a goon turns into a parable of the agony and the ecstasy of the internet, and democracy in the age of Boaty McBoatface.Special thanks to Larry Lynch and Morgan Springer. A recent study from the University of Washington School of Medicine reveals a national snapshot of the ways Americans are vulnerable to financial insecurity after undergoing medical procedures. Surveys showed that about 38% of people who undergo surgery in the United States report experiencing financial hardship after surgery – meaning they have incurred medical debt and have difficulty paying medical bills, or they delay medical care for fear of cost. John Scott is a trauma surgeon and researcher who studies health policy at the University of Washington. He joins us to discuss his findings.

What gives? In this episode of "After the Fact," John Scott, who directs Pew's retirement savings project, explains new ways people can save more and earlier. A-I-T has issues a press release quoting D-E-A Asia Pacific Division Special Agent in charge John Scott as saying that the annual forum represents the "shared commitment of Taiwan and the United States to combat the scourge (禍害) of drug trafficking." NPM to show 'meat-shaped stone' in first exhibition in Yilan The National Palace Museum has announced that its iconic "meat-shaped stone" and 14 other artifacts will be going on disply in Yilan for the first time. The artifacts will be part of a special exhibition co-organized with the Lanyang Museum in December. Along with its famed "meat-shaped stone," the National Palace Museum also selected a jade duck piece dating back to the Song and Yuan dynasties, a porcelain chicken cup in doucai painted enamels from the Ming dynasty … … and a revolving vase with swimming fish in cobalt blue glaze (釉) from the Qing dynasty as some of the artifacts that will be featured in the Yilan exhibition. Moscow says foreign troops in Ukraine would be ‘unacceptable' Russia called "absolutely unacceptable" the idea of deploying foreign forces in Ukraine discussed by Europe and Kiev as part of security guarantees for Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the so-called "coalition of the willing" countries of attempts to undermine US President Donald Trump's peacemaking efforts. And reiterated (重申) any discussions of European security, Ukraine included, must involve Russia. Daria Bondarchuk reports from Moscow. Uganda Announces US Deal to Take Deported Migrants Uganda's foreign ministry says the African country has agreed to a deal with the United States to take deported migrants as long as they don't have criminal records and are not unaccompanied minors. The ministry said in a statement Thursday that the agreement had been concluded but that terms were still being worked out. It added that Uganda prefers that the migrants sent there be of African nationalities (國籍), but did not elaborate on what Uganda might get in return for accepting deportees. The U.S. embassy in Uganda declined to comment on what it called “diplomatic negotiations." Human rights activists criticized the deal as possibly going against international law. New Evidence of Earlier Modern Humans and Neanderthals Interaction And new findings suggest that modern humans and Neanderthals may have interacted 100-thousand years earlier than previously thought. That's according to researchers who used CT scans and 3D mapping to study the bones of a child they believe was the result of interbreeding between the two distinct groups. The child was buried in a cave in Israel some 140-thousand years ago. Because no ancient DNA was extracted from the fossilized (變成化石的) remains, it's impossible to confirm the child's origins, but scientists say microscopic details in the bones indicate the child had traits of both groups. The findings, recently published in a peer-reviewed journal, help shed light on when the two groups began interacting and offers clues about their relationships. That was the I.C.R.T. Nearly 60 million people in the U.S. fall into the broad category of independent workers. Those include contract, temporary and gig workers. Their jobs do not fall neatly into employer-connected benefit systems, so policymakers increasingly are exploring benefits that are instead attached to the worker. Several states have enacted legislation allowing portable benefits to be set up in their state. Other states have created programs that offer automatic enrollment for employees without access to an employer-sponsored plan. All those efforts are aimed at expanding the ways people save for retirement and other needs. On this episode to discuss the issue are John Scott, director of the Retirement Savings Project at Pew, Kristen Sharp of the Flex Association and Karen Kavanaugh, who's working with Tufts University on the Working While Caring Initiative. All three talked about how the worker benefits system can better serve people in the changing economy and provide them with greater financial security.Scott laid out the scale of the challenge to improve financial security for Americans and Sharp discussed how portable benefits can help the people her group serves, the millions of people whose work is app-based and need a better system to receive benefits. Kavanaugh is focused on how benefits employers provide can be better shaped to help the tens of millions of people in this country with caregiving responsibilities. She's overseeing a pilot project that's exploring how smaller employers can build in the flexibility needed by many caregivers. When did you last pause to consider what it takes to turn daring ideas from a lab into reality? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I spend time with Mike Otworth, Executive Chairman of Innventure, whose career reveals what happens when breakthrough technology leaves the safety of research and collides with real-world demands. Mike's view offers an honest look at what changes when you match influential inventions with a team that moves quickly and welcomes a little discomfort. We begin with Mike's unexpected transition from working on Capitol Hill to joining a group of brilliant scientists in Florida. That twist of fate shaped his life's direction and planted the seed for what later became Innventure. He explains how they tackle a problem that many overlook: big companies often create advanced solutions but lack the speed or drive to launch them effectively. His answer was to build an organization that runs on agility, quick learning, and a firm belief that course corrections are normal, not failures. One idea that sticks is what Mike calls "adaptive strategic positioning." In plain English, it means leaders must remain flexible and innovative enough to adjust their direction as soon as reality reveals something new. For founders juggling investors and product timelines, this can feel uncomfortable, yet it remains a necessary task. He also shares why he looks for "athletes" rather than box-ticking hires. For Mike, mindset beats a perfect CV every time. He seeks individuals who bring determination, resilience, and an appetite for new challenges, regardless of their starting point. We also explore how team culture can't be built with beanbags and table football alone. Real innovation teams keep an eye on the big goal and value shared wins more than individual credit. Mike also discusses giving every team member a stake in the outcome, ensuring everyone rows in the same direction. He gives a heartfelt nod to Dr. John Scott, a mentor whose sharp mind and honest opinions shaped his knack for spotting which tech has a chance in the market. This episode is more than another story of startup life. It's a clear window into how leadership must evolve as a company grows from a scrappy experiment to a trusted player. Mike's reflections on when to step back and let new leaders steer add a layer of honesty that many founders rarely share. If you enjoy hearing how a few bold decisions can ripple through entire industries, this chat offers plenty to chew on. Expect thoughtful lessons about courage, flexibility, and what it takes to build a company where every person is trusted to run with an idea and find a way forward. For anyone curious about early-stage success beyond the headlines, settle in and hear how Mike and Innventure prove that speed, trust, and the right people still matter most.
