For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.Luke 2:10-11 ConfessionOfficiant: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.People: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws.We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and apart from your grace, there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare all those who confess their faults. Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.Officiant: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. The Lord's PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Invitatory & PsalmsOfficiant: O God, make speed to save us. People: O Lord, make haste to help us. Officiant & People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. O Gracious Light Phos hilaronO gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Psalm 8 Domine, Dominus noster1O Lord our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world!2Out of the mouths of infants and children *your majesty is praised above the heavens.3You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, *to quell the enemy and the avenger.4When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,5What is man that you should be mindful of him? *the son of man that you should seek him out?6You have made him but little lower than the angels; *you adorn him with glory and honor;7You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *you put all things under his feet:8All sheep and oxen, *even the wild beasts of the field,9The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.10O Lord our Governor, *how exalted is your Name in all the world! Psalm 113 Laudate, pueri1Hallelujah!Give praise, you servants of the Lord; *praise the Name of the Lord.2Let the Name of the Lord be blessed, *from this time forth for evermore.3From the rising of the sun to its going down *let the Name of the Lord be praised.4The Lord is high above all nations, *and his glory above the heavens.5Who is like the Lord our God, who sits enthroned on high *but stoops to behold the heavens and the earth?6He takes up the weak out of the dust *and lifts up the poor from the ashes.7He sets them with the princes, *with the princes of his people.8He makes the woman of a childless house *to be a joyful mother of children. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The LessonsJob 28:12-28 English Standard Version12 “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?13 Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living.14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me,' and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.'15 It cannot be bought for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price.16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls.19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.20 “From where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding?21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living and concealed from the birds of the air.22 Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'23 “God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.24 For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.25 When he gave to the wind its weight and apportioned the waters by measure,26 when he made a decree for the rain and a way for the lightning of the thunder,27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.28 And he said to man,‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.'”Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Mary - MagnificatMy soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; * for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant From this day all generations will call me blessed: * the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as It was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Matthew 11:25-30 English Standard Version25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”Officiant: The Word of the LordPeople: Thanks be to God. The Song of Simeon - Nunc dimittisLord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel.Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. The CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. ChristmastideAlmighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.A Collect for PeaceMost holy God, the source of all good desires, all right judgments, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, so that our minds may be fixed on the doing of your will, and that we, being delivered from the fear of all enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through the mercies of Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen.A Collect for Aid against PerilsBe our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. For MissionKeep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen. ThanksgivingsThe General ThanksgivingAlmighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.A Prayer of St. ChrysostomAlmighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen. ConclusionMay the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. - Romans 15:13

In 2015, Pope Francis - head of the Catholic Church - published Laudato Si: On Care For Our Common Home, a “papal cyclical,” or open letter, to the world's more than 1.3 billion Catholics about the ethical imperative of addressing climate change, and the relationship between environmental stewardship and social justice. The publication had an impact: in church-goers' confidence in the scientific evidence for climate change, in country leaders who cited it in the COP21 negotiations that led to the Paris Agreement, and in catalyzing an international movement among the Catholic community to fight climate change. But as he makes clear in the follow up “apostolic exhortation” released earlier this month, called Laudate Deum, Pope Francis knows the work accomplished so far is not enough. Climate Now was joined by Dr. Mary Evelyn Tucker, Director of the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale University, to examine this urgent papal call for progress in protecting the environment and the poor, and the impact it may have in the global climate movement. Pope Francis recently released his new apostolic exhortation, Laudate Deum, calling for a renewed sense of urgency in combatting climate change. As he cites overwhelming scientific evidence that the world is facing a climate crisis that is caused by human activity, how should Catholic health care best respond to this urgent Apostolic exhortation?Indu Spugnardi, Director of Advocacy and Resource Development for CHA, and Fr. Daniel Horan, Professor of Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theology at St. Mary's College and Director of the Center for the Study of Spirituality, join the show to discuss the new apostolic exhortation and Fr. Daniel's coverage of the release for the National Catholic Reporter. Fr. Daniel discusses our relationship to the world around us, the document's inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi, and having hope for the future.ResourcesRead Laudate Deum at the Vatican's official websiteRead Fr. Christiana Zenner, PhD, returns to the podcast (see episode 4.3) for a discussion about Laudate Deum, the Apostolic Exhortation that Pope Francis recently issued as an update to his 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home. We talk about some of the similarities and differences between the encyclical and the new exhortation. Some of the main themes include Pope Francis' use of scientific argumentation to refute climate denial, his critique of the United States as the world's leading carbon emitter per capita, his critique of what he calls the "technocratic paradigm" currently dominant around the globe (especially in the Global North), and his call for a global politics of multilateralism to address the climate crisis. We also discuss the usual absence of women from citations in these sorts of documents, which is remedied in Laudate Deum with a very strange reference to a well-known feminist scholar of science studies, Donna Haraway, who grew up Catholic but has taken highly critical stances toward Catholicism throughout her career. National Catholic Reporter featured an interview profile of Haraway in response to the citation, which you can find here.
In case you missed it, Pope Francis gave the Church a new Apostolic Exhortation on October 4, entitled Laudate Deum, a follow-up to his encyclical Laudato Si, from eight years ago. Adam Fitzpatrick, who serves as the Social Mission Outreach Coordinator for the Archdiocesan Center for Mission, joined host Patrick Conley to talk about the contents of this new Apostolic Exhortation and about Catholics and the Climate Crisis. Folks, we're back at it. Last week, we refreshed our memories about the Pope's climate encyclical Laudato Si and how it connected with things like degrowth and dependency theory. But this week, we're back with some breaking news. The Vatican has released Francis' most recent apostolic exhortation Laudate Deum, and we will talk through it.Last time, we pulled out some of Francis' thoughts around dependency and the economy, and in this Laudate Deum, he's back with a lot of similar themes, but this time, he's way more cranky about it all––which makes sense given that Laudato Si came out eight years ago and things have only gotten worse. So, in this episode, we will talk through Laudate Deum and see what's changed and what's stayed the same in those eight years. While those with "equipping gifts" prepare others' heads and hearts for the work of ministry through discipleship, those with "service gifts" do the hands-and-feet work of ministry. Now that you've taken the quiz, listened to the talks, and read a little about your gifts, what's next? First: a warm welcome to new listeners and a sincere request to you to stay subscribed through Pentecost. St. Paul says we, the church, are the answer to renewal for the Church and the world (Eph 4), and you need a community in which to grow and discern your spiritual gifts in power and effectiveness. I hope you and I might even become friends. So give yourself the gift of God's word from the "one table" of the Scriptures and the Eucharist (CCC 103), and listen for the next several weeks. Please. Below is my closing audio and video message from Saturday afternoon at the Spiritual Gifts Conference, in case you missed it. In it, I offer you a path forward and next steps to continue your discernment. This week you have time to catch up on any of the episodes from the Spiritual Gifts Podcast Series you may have missed, and next week I'll give you the stats on the quiz over the 12K who registered and took it; we will begin looking at the categories of spiritual gifts -- Equipping Gifts | Service Gifts | Sign Gifts -- exploring the gifts individually, and ways they can be clustered. If you had questions about differences in this weekend's gift quiz results and others you have taken, the podcasts in the remainder of this series will help clear up your questions, as we dig deeply into the the nuances between the gifts and how the differences help us distinguish between gifts that are otherwise similar, such as leadership and apostleship. Rather than "another 'thing' we have to do," our spiritual gifts feel very natural - even supernatural - to us, and are meant to be discerned and used in the context of our vocations and duties and stations in life. "In keeping with their vocations, the demands of the times and the various gifts of he Holy Spirit, the apostolate [ministry] assumes the most varied forms. But charity, drawn from the Eucharist above all, is always as it were, the soul of the whole apostolate (CCC 864). Sign up for the conference here. Grace [charis] is first and foremost the gift of the Spirit who justifies and sanctifies us. But grace also includes the gifts [charismata] that the Spirit grants us to associate us with his work, to enable us to collaborate in the salvation of others and in the growth of the Body of Christ, the Church. There are sacramental graces, gifts proper to the different sacraments. There are furthermore special graces, also called charisms after the Greek term used by St. Paul and meaning "favor," "gratuitous gift," "benefit." Whatever their character - sometimes it is extraordinary, such as the gift of miracles or of tongues - charisms are oriented toward sanctifying grace and are intended for the common good of the Church. They are at the service of charity which builds up the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2003). Sign up here.
