A highlight of my travels was a month-long ride 'Around Oz 2016' on my reliable 2011 Harley Davidson Blackline motorcycle. This trip was solely undertaken to raise awareness of the rare disease called 'Batten disease'. This is a life-limiting neurodegenerative (a type of dementia) genetic disease, which mostly impacts young children. When Nine-Year-Old Charleigh's Life Hangs on a Ministerial Decision

What happens when a child's life depends on a medication that costs nearly a million dollars per year? In this eye-opening conversation with Michael Mulligan of Mulligan Defence Lawyers, we take a deep dive into the tragic case of nine-year-old Charleigh Pollock from Langford, who suffers from the rare genetic disorder Batten disease.Mulligan walks us through the complex web of legislation governing medication coverage in British Columbia, revealing the stark truth about how these life-or-death decisions are made. Despite common misconceptions about universal healthcare, the reality is that medication funding falls under provincial jurisdiction through the Pharmaceutical Services Act. For expensive drugs treating rare conditions, the process involves a Drug Benefits Council making recommendations, but final decisions rest with government ministers and are primarily financial rather than medical. The most troubling aspect of Charleigh's case is that she had been receiving the $844,000-per-year treatment for some time before funding was abruptly discontinued. This withdrawal of established treatment raises serious legal questions that distinguish her situation from initial denials of coverage. Mulligan discusses a current groundbreaking case moving through BC courts that might provide a legal pathway forward, exploring potential arguments around negligence, Charter rights regarding cruel and unusual treatment, and judicial review of administrative decisions. What emerges from this discussion is a sobering reality: when politicians claim they "shouldn't interfere with medical decisions," they're being disingenuous. The system is explicitly designed to make politicians the final arbiters of these treatments after doctors make their recommendations. The criteria for deciding which children receive life-saving medications are, at their core, about money, raising profound questions about how we value human life in our healthcare system. Listen in and consider what changes might be needed to create a more just approach to rare disease treatment in Canada.Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the cases and legislation discussed.

Doctors explained that there was no cure, nor any treatment options for this rare neurodegenerative disorder which would leave the girls blind, immobile, cognitively impaired, and ultimately gone between the ages of 6 and 12. Kristen and Gordon were unwilling to accept this prognosis. One year later, thanks to unwavering dedication and an overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world, they built a foundation which coordinated and funded a first of its kind investigational gene therapy clinical trial, providing the first signs of hope for a cure to families impacted by this disease. Send us a textIn the 1930's, pioneering New Zealand pilot Jean Batten set multiple aviation records, including a speed record from London to Sydney, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from East to West in 1935 (which, before reading this I routinely accredited to Beryl Markham), and first person to fly solo from London to New Zealand to prove how aviation could connect her homeland to the rest of the world. “Alone in the Sky” is an apt summation of this pilot's jaw dropping accomplishments. If you love flying and aviation history, you'll love this book and our conversation.  That's just the half of it. Have I mentioned how awesome my co-hosts Dr. Jacque Boyd and Capt. Jenny Beatty are? It is an honor and privilege to talk about our pioneers with these two incredibly accomplished and insightful women, both self-proclaimed aviation and book nerds, whose general aviation flying, aviation education, and airline careers, along with their long history of advocacy for women in aviation, complement my own military experiences, giving us the opportunity to approach our collective history from a variety of perspectives to help us all understand it better.  As we honor the anniversary of Amy Johnson's passing today, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, we celebrate the many adventurers who came after her. Later this year, the Aviatrix Book Club will discuss the memoirs of two women who celebrate this legacy of adventure: Solo 2 Darwin by Amanda Harrison, and Bird by Tracey Curtis-Taylor.  Special shout out to author Maggie Shipstead, whose novel Great Circle was inspired by Jean Batten, and is a story that honors the spirit of our women pioneers.  You don't want to miss the Aviatrix Classics Series. The Cavalcade of America's sponsor, The Du Pont Company, had profited from gunpowder during the first World War. Years of bad press led them to hire the ad agency Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborne. They wanted a brand perception change. The Cavalcade of America was the answer. In 1944 The Cavalcade of America was in the midst of a thirteen-year primetime run on NBC. Sponsored by Dupont, the program dramatized history and historical fiction, focusing intensely on the war at home and abroad. On Christmas night at 8PM, Walter Huston emceed a program called “America For Christmas” which took listeners around the country to showcase all the things that made different states in the United States so unique.

This episode of Lab Rats to Unicorns features an inspiring conversation with Julia Vitarello, founder of Mila's Miracle Foundation and a trailblazer in the field of individualized genetic therapies. Julia shares the story of her daughter Mila, who was diagnosed with a rare and fatal genetic disease, Batten disease, at age six. Confronted with a system ill-equipped to handle ultra-rare conditions, Julia embarked on a transformative journey to develop Milasen, the first-ever genetic therapy tailored for a single individual. Through resilience and collaboration, Julia mobilized a global network of scientists, regulators, and supporters to create a treatment that set a precedent for a new approach in medicine. Beyond her daughter's story, Julia reflects on the systemic barriers families face when accessing life-saving treatments and how her foundation is addressing these challenges. She explores the future of healthcare, advocating for changes to regulatory and reimbursement models to scale access to innovative therapies for rare disease communities. Julia's pioneering work is a testament to the power of advocacy, science, and the unwavering determination of a mother to spark a revolution in medicine.

It's kind of hard to pin down what the first slasher movie was. Do you start with “Psycho” in 1960? Go even further back? But there's no real doubt when the genre blossomed—the 1970s. And that makes sense, because the 1970s was also when the shocking crimes of serial killers really permeated the national consciousness. You ask someone to name a serial killer, there's a good chance they'll name someone who was mostly or exclusively active in the ‘70s—Bundy, Gacy, BTK, Son of Sam. The slasher movies tapped into a growing awareness that there really were terrifyingly dangerous people out there, killers who didn't even have to know you to want you dead. This is the story of the horrible murders of two young hitchhikers, at a time when such cases were startlingly common. Get 15% off OneSkin with the code HAPPYCAMPER at  https://www.oneskin.co/ #oneskinpodSources:Ann Rule—Last Dance, Last Chance—"The Beach”Court papers:,https://casetext.com/case/state-v-batten-3https://www.thedailyworld.com/news/gone-girl-the-disappearance-of-laura-flink/ https://charleyproject.org/case/laura-lee-asynithe-flinkFollow us, campers!Patreon (join to get all episodes ad-free, at least a day early, an extra episode a month, and a free sticker!): https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfirehttps://www.truecrimecampfirepod.com/Facebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://gramha.net/profile/truecrimecampfire/19093397079Twitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfireEmail: truecrimecampfirepod@gmail.comMERCH! https://true-crime-campfire.myspreadshop.com
