Can we talk about...? A podcast on leading for racial equity in philanthropy
One month into President Trump's second presidency, Susan Taylor Batten, the President and CEO of ABFE and Lyle Matthew Kan, interim President and CEO of AAPIP (Asian Americans / Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy), sit down with us to share stories and insights on how philanthropy is navigating the administration's efforts to dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. They acknowledge the fear and uncertainty of this moment, encouraging funders to move beyond fear and "put our privilege on the line" to move money and resources to those most impacted and at risk. They also provide tangible resources for philanthropy from the Racial Equity Advancement and Defense Initiative (READI), a collaboration with ABFE, AAPIP, NAP (Native Americans in Philanthropy) and HIP (Hispanics in Philanthropy), which models the importance of doing this work together - in partnership and community.
TEAMBBDO will genau das ändern.
Kristen Gray is the mother of Charlotte and Gwenyth Gray, who were diagnosed with Batten disease in 2015. Kristen and her husband, film producer Gordon Gray, founded the Charlotte and Gwenyth Gray Foundation to Cure Batten Disease. Doctors explained that there was no cure, nor any treatment options for this rare neurodegenerative disorder which would leave the girls blind, immobile, cognitively impaired, and ultimately gone between the ages of 6 and 12. Kristen and Gordon were unwilling to accept this prognosis. One year later, thanks to unwavering dedication and an overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world, they built a foundation which coordinated and funded a first of its kind investigational gene therapy clinical trial, providing the first signs of hope for a cure to families impacted by this disease. Results are ongoing, but promising. The Foundation funded the pre-clinical research and treatment of 15 children to date. Send us a textIn the 1930's, pioneering New Zealand pilot Jean Batten set multiple aviation records, including a speed record from London to Sydney, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from East to West in 1935 (which, before reading this I routinely accredited to Beryl Markham), and first person to fly solo from London to New Zealand to prove how aviation could connect her homeland to the rest of the world. “Alone in the Sky” is an apt summation of this pilot's jaw dropping accomplishments. If you love flying and aviation history, you'll love this book and our conversation. That's just the half of it. Have I mentioned how awesome my co-hosts Dr. Jacque Boyd and Capt. Jenny Beatty are? It is an honor and privilege to talk about our pioneers with these two incredibly accomplished and insightful women, both self-proclaimed aviation and book nerds, whose general aviation flying, aviation education, and airline careers, along with their long history of advocacy for women in aviation, complement my own military experiences, giving us the opportunity to approach our collective history from a variety of perspectives to help us all understand it better. As we honor the anniversary of Amy Johnson's passing today, the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia, we celebrate the many adventurers who came after her. Later this year, the Aviatrix Book Club will discuss the memoirs of two women who celebrate this legacy of adventure: Solo 2 Darwin by Amanda Harrison, and Bird by Tracey Curtis-Taylor. Special shout out to author Maggie Shipstead, whose novel Great Circle was inspired by Jean Batten, and is a story that honors the spirit of our women pioneers. The Cavalcade of America's sponsor, The Du Pont Company, had profited from gunpowder during the first World War. Years of bad press led them to hire the ad agency Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborne. They wanted a brand perception change. The Cavalcade of America was the answer. In 1944 The Cavalcade of America was in the midst of a thirteen-year primetime run on NBC. Sponsored by Dupont, the program dramatized history and historical fiction, focusing intensely on the war at home and abroad. On Christmas night at 8PM, Walter Huston emceed a program called “America For Christmas” which took listeners around the country to showcase all the things that made different states in the United States so unique.

This episode of Lab Rats to Unicorns features an inspiring conversation with Julia Vitarello, founder of Mila's Miracle Foundation and a trailblazer in the field of individualized genetic therapies. Julia shares the story of her daughter Mila, who was diagnosed with a rare and fatal genetic disease, Batten disease, at age six. Confronted with a system ill-equipped to handle ultra-rare conditions, Julia embarked on a transformative journey to develop Milasen, the first-ever genetic therapy tailored for a single individual. Through resilience and collaboration, Julia mobilized a global network of scientists, regulators, and supporters to create a treatment that set a precedent for a new approach in medicine. Beyond her daughter's story, Julia reflects on the systemic barriers families face when accessing life-saving treatments and how her foundation is addressing these challenges. She explores the future of healthcare, advocating for changes to regulatory and reimbursement models to scale access to innovative therapies for rare disease communities. Julia's pioneering work is a testament to the power of advocacy, science, and the unwavering determination of a mother to spark a revolution in medicine.
President-elect Donald Trump announced last week that he would nominate prominent anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the HHS. While this news caused a dip in biotech stocks, one analyst said the selloff was an overreaction. Meanwhile, fall conference season continues with the American College of Rheumatology Convergence (ACR) and American Heart Association's 2024 Scientific Sessions (AHA). Lupus was the indication du jour at ACR, where BMS, Kyverna, Fate Therapeutics and Cabaletta Bio presented data from early-stage trials of their CAR T candidates, and Biogen and UCB detailed data behind their unexpected late-stage victory for dapirolizumab pegol. This was a much-needed win for Biogen, which has seen its shares decline 36% this year. Neurogene's stock, meanwhile, tumbled 36% on Monday alone, following the release of details about an adverse event in a trial for its Rett syndrome gene therapy. This followed a 35% fall last week when the adverse event was first announced. And the company decided to drop its gene therapy in Batten disease after the FDA declined to grant Regenerative Medicine Advance Therapy designation to support the program. We also took a look at bluebird bio's cash problem, with the company slated to exhaust its runway to reach a breakeven point before the end of next year. On a more positive note, RegenxBio announced this week it has aligned with the FDA on path to possible accelerated approval for its investigational gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, following behind Sarepta's Elevydis, which faced controversy after it received accelerated approval in June 2023, only to miss the primary functional endpoint in its confirmatory trial four months later. And speaking of accelerated approval, we released a special edition of ClinicaSpace Monday focused on this very topic. Sign up to receive it here.

Batten down the hatches, because the cost of environmental damage continues to rise.Hurricanes and natural disasters pose a threat to leveraged credits. This year's Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, has caused significant physical and financial damage to borrowers and civilians located mainly in the southeastern part of the US. Damages from hurricanes Helene and Milton, specifically, are estimated by published reports to be around $50bn each, ranking them among the costliest disasters in recent history. In this week's episode of Cloud 9fin hosted by leveraged finance editor David Bell, senior reporter Sasha Padbidri talks to Karen Clark, a Nobel Prize-winning pioneer in the catastrophe modeling space. Clark was also the subject of Michael Lewis' 2007 article In Nature's Casino for The New York Times Magazine, which examines the topic of catastrophe modeling in great detail.Together, they discuss how the technology of catastrophe modeling has advanced since the 1980s and why understanding these risks are critical for company executives and insurers as natural disasters continue to reshape the financial landscape.

It's kind of hard to pin down what the first slasher movie was. Do you start with “Psycho” in 1960? Go even further back? But there's no real doubt when the genre blossomed—the 1970s. And that makes sense, because the 1970s was also when the shocking crimes of serial killers really permeated the national consciousness. You ask someone to name a serial killer, there's a good chance they'll name someone who was mostly or exclusively active in the ‘70s—Bundy, Gacy, BTK, Son of Sam. The slasher movies tapped into a growing awareness that there really were terrifyingly dangerous people out there, killers who didn't even have to know you to want you dead. This is the story of the horrible murders of two young hitchhikers, at a time when such cases were startlingly common.
