My guest for Episode #156 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Rachell Kitchen. She is an Author, Certified Professional Life & Transition Coach; ICF Associate Certified Coach, and Professional Speaker. Episode page and links (with video and transcript): https://markgraban.com/mistake156 She graduated college with a B.S. degree in Industry & Technology and enjoyed a career as an Industrial Engineer. Rachell is the author of a Book: Doubt Your Doubts: How to Transform Negative Self-Talk, Take Action and Confidently Create Your Dream Life. And she has a FREE eCourse called Grow, Expand, Thrive (GET), In today's episode, Rachell shares her “favorite mistake” story about being a young engineer (the only minority woman in the group) and how she “ended up on the bathroom floor at work” crying as the result of the stress of trying to have a daughter and a career. How did getting a coach help her? Why is it a mistake to not ask for help? We talk about what she's learned along the way and more. We also talk about questions and topics including: What were your adjustments career wise? Letting life create her instead of creating her life? Tell us about the book — why did you write it? What is “negative self talk” and why is it so common in our heads? What's your “gremlin”? Do we all have one? How can we recognize doubts and negative self talk? At what point are doubts helpful (in terms of being cautious about something – maybe avoiding mistakes) and when do doubts get in the way? What is your “dream life” and are you making progress on that, Rachell? Leaders should help employees save their time by working on what is really important and what is really adding value. We cannot avoid sacrifices, big or small, in the process of making our dreams come true. However, we should still give ourselves the incentive of having quality time doing what we want, with the people that matter, and taking care of our wellbeing. Interview Insights The more that we spend our time conquering the to-do list, it becomes a burden of stress on our body. If you are just going through the schedule and the to-do list, schedule in some free space where for just 15 minutes a creating something. We are cultured to have these limiting beliefs and that's why the big message in creating space to thrive is to create space and growth, not obstacles. If I could wave a magic wand and go back, I would have built-in more time to really, pursue creativity. Being able to build the life where I'm working on something that brings me joy and it gets me into that flow state, doesn't feel a lot like work. Look for some creative pursuits you can go after. Teach your team the concept of being growth-minded. I want to be working on the things that are really adding value to my clients and to myself. Read the Show Notes from this Episode Courtney proudly shares that her mother, Linda, whose work ethic is very admirable, served as her inspiration growing up. WNYC’s Rebecca Carroll [2:58] gives us her perspective on an aspect of #MeToo we should be talking about more: the denigration of black women. Also, if you thanked black women on Twitter for Doug Jones’ win in Alabama, you might want to listen in for some tips on how to put that support into concrete action. Then, [36:28] writer Amy Sullivan helps us unpack a listener question about abortion, religion and politics. Specifically: why hasn’t the Left followed the Right’s lead in framing abortion as a religious issue? Ana and Amy reaffirm that, yes, it is possible to be pro-choice and a person of faith. Rebecca’s Esquire piece can be read here: http://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a13978884/charlie-rose-sexual-harassment-accuser-story/ Our guests have pods, too!
