Kate and Doree both struggle with how to figure it all out and the best ways to cope. Then, multimedia artist and Wild Unknown tarot deck creator Kim Krans joins the show to talk about how to bring mystical and spiritual practices into the mundane rituals of life, why most of her self-care revolves around the temperature of her body, and how a devastating and disappointing gallery show led to the creation of the beloved Wild Unknown Oracle series. To leave a voicemail or text for a future episode, reach them at 781-591-0390. For those of us who enjoy control and predictability in life, these are tough (if not excruciating) times. We are living in a pandemic - something I ignorantly and blissfully thought only existed in history books and Bible stories… But, friends, we are still living. Just under very different circumstances than we are used to. Know this - we are standing at the start line of a marathon. We need to show up prepared to pace ourselves, stay nourished & hydrated and - most importantly - keep our head game STRONG. Some of you have heard the story of my one and only marathon. At mile 2 I decided I didn’t really feel like running anymore. I was just over it… And the following 4+ hours were absolutely grueling. I couldn’t mentally recover, which made me physically deteriorate at a rapid pace. In the case of COVID-19, we cannot afford to deteriorate at the start line, or at mile 2. We will need to be extremely intentional and diligent in managing our energy and expectations. We will need to be nimble, adaptable, and creative. We will need to create boundaries around the places (namely the internet) and people who drain us or create unnecessary fear, panic or anxiety within us. We also need to take radical responsibility for seeking hope and happiness during this marathon. If we are to sustain ourselves over the coming months, we must be able to find the cracks where the light is begging to come in. I promise they exist - but you will need to actively seek them out. I am in Seattle - the US epicenter of COVID-19. Our city is pretty much shut down. It is hard and heavy. And there is light. I can see the cracks. If I can see the cracks you can too. Listen in to learn 5 ways to find light in the darkness of COVID-19. Also, please join me for our upcoming free Hope, Happiness & Mental Health Challenge (sign up: shamelessmom.com/challenge). We start Monday, March 23rd. This challenge is the light you’re looking for. One adolescent rite of passage where many of these key memories are formed - both good and bad - is parties. For many of us, parties during our teenage years often marked the many ‘firsts’ in a young persons’ life. The first time we could drive after getting our licence. Our first kiss. The first time we experiment with cigarettes, alcohol or harder drugs. For many teens, it’s their first encounter with sex. Unfortunately for some girls, that encounter isn’t always consensual, but instead traumatic. In those situations, we’d like to think that if we, or someone we knew, was raped or sexually assaulted at a party, the person responsible would be ejected and police contacted. Sadly, we know that in reality that doesn’t happen for a range of reasons. It’s cold comfort, but on those occasions, we hope that police will be contacted in the days following the attack, in an attempt to bring the assailant to justice. But that can only happen if the survivor makes it home from the party in the first place. Today I am taking a moment to celebrate Black History Month. To be honest, this moment feels too short and inadequate. I really wish I planned better for this month because this celebration deserves more attention than what I have created space for. While I aim to elevate black women and black moms all year long in the SMA, I understand the special importance of taking extra time to do this in February and I have already committed to dedicating more than one episode to this next year. I hope that in acknowledging my imperfect action here, other white allies will step up their game too. This is work is crucial, even when the steps feel too small. Something is better than nothing. And I vow to keep learning more so I can keep doing more. Listen in to learn how to celebrate black history and black women by becoming a better ally and, better yet, an accomplice. Please take notes as I share powerful resources and a fantastic list of podcasts hosted by black women whom I admire tremendously. I want you to go subscribe to them all! In 2019 I set out to quit 3 things that were no longer serving me. Not only were these three things no longer serving me, they were sucking precious time and energy to the point I could no longer ignore their negative impact on my life. It would be cute and fun and just oh-so-perfect if I could have sat down to record this episode and shout from the rooftops, “I DID IT! I QUIT THESE THINGS THAT WERE NO LONGER SERVING ME!” But I didn’t. I had varying degrees of “success” in the quitting of each thing. I put success in quotes because we tend to gauge success in really black & white terms and one of the best lessons I’ve learned over the last couple years (as someone who really likes to keep things black & white), is that often the magic is in the gray. We think “success” lives in the black & white. But true success is in the gray - where you have the power to shift your perspective #everydamnday in order to find wins, gain growth, and feel the magic even when you haven’t found the “success” you were initially looking for. Listen in to learn with me as I share my “success” and my SUCCESS of kinda quitting three things that were no longer serving me. On June 2, 2011, Angela Gilbert was walking on timber land used for logging in Granite Falls, Washington with an acquaintance named Colt White . At some point, Colt returned without Angela. When asked about this, he allegedly said that she had continued to walk along the land near the Stillaguamish River. Unfortunately, no one ever got a chance to ask Colt more about what happened on that warm spring day walk because he disappeared shortly after Angela. Several weeks later, Colt’s body was found in the Stillaguamish River. During searches, some of Angela's belongings were found in the area but police told her family they believe the items were planted. It has been eight long years since Angela disappeared and her family believes there are more people out there who know what happened. If you have any information about the disappearance of Angela Gilbert, please call the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at 425-388-3849.You can follow the search for Angela on social media at: Missing Angela Gilbert. This episode was sponsored by:Ritual- Visit Ritual.com/Vanished for 10% off your first 3 months of Essential for Women vitamins.Sleep Number- You’ll only find Sleep Number at one of their 600 Sleep Number stores nationwide. This week, Kate returns from Oregon with a bag of new product obsessions (Oils! Mists! Oh My!) and works on waking up at 5AM, and Doree recommends some new books. Plus they discuss the power of face-time with friends, early bedtimes, and annoying body aches and pains. Then they welcome strength coach, writer, and speaker Chrissy King, who talks about her passion for power-lifting, leaning into self-compassion, breaking free from toxic fitness and diet culture, and how there’s nothing better than a good book.To leave a voicemail for a future mini-ep, call 781-591-0390.
