Games journalist and PC Gamer editor Jody Macgregor joins Liz and Ben to take control of an oddly Pythonesque Rincewind and discuss the 1995 graphic adventure game Discworld from Teeny Weeny Games and Perfect 10 Productions. A nefarious secret society has summoned a dragon in Ankh-Morpork! It's a suspiciously familiar plot, and of course the only one who can save the city is...Rincewind? This wizard might not know any spells, but he's decidedly snarky and cunning - and accompanied by an inventory window on legs. Together, they'll use petty theft, time travel and logic that would put Rube Goldberg to shame to rid the city of this scaly threat forever...twice! Terry Pratchett was famously an early adopter of computers, and a devoted video game player, so its no surprise that there were other Discworld videogames before...er...Discworld. But this 1995 point-and-click graphic adventure game is by far the most well known and beloved of the lot - despite also being infamous for its difficulty, in a genre known for obscure puzzles with illogical solutions! The player controls a version of Rincewind voiced by Eric Idle, who must travel back and forth all over Ankh-Morpork (and to the edge of the Disc) to collect a variety of random objects to save the city. The plot is loosely based on Guards! Guards!, with some flavour from Moving Pictures and a cast drawn from the early wizards novels. It was followed by two more games from the same team: Discworld II: Missing, Presumed...?!, and Discworld Noir, each with quite different visual styles, and the latter with a brand new protagonist. Sadly, all three are “abandonware” - not only unavailable, but languishing in copyright limbo, with no-one sure enough who currently has the rights to get them published again. Have you had a chance to play Discworld? What do you think of this version of Rincewind, Ankh-Morpork and the Disc? Would you like to hear us do episodes about the two other adventure games? And what other adventure games would you recommend for folks looking for a similar vibe? What other kinds of Discworld videogame would you like to see? Click on Pratchat and choose the question mark icon to join our online conversation, using the hashtag #Pratchat89. Guest Jody Macgregor (he/him) is a journalist who started out writing about music, but now writes mostly about videogames. He's been writing for PC Gamer for about a decade, and is currently the magazine's weekend and Australian editor. You can find out more about him, and read his most recent reviews and articles, by looking up his profile at pcgamer.com. You can find episode notes and errata on our web site. Next month we're catching a train - the Ankh-Morpork Scenic Railway, that is - as we read Terry Pratchett's penultimate Discworld novel, Raising Steam! LITTLE TEENY CHAT and a question laurenostrowskifenton@gmail.com
Good things come in small packages. Jack, Lynne and Matt McFarland chat all things small on this week's episode of The Growing Season. Take the full-sized version of a large plant and miniaturize it and that's what we're talking about. The differences between full-sized, semi-dwarf and dwarf kick off the show. Espaliers are the first out of the gate. Squirrels and apple trees are a highlight. Baseball and apples. What!?Blueberries have been tough for The Growing Season to grow. Matt discusses. Shade/light conditions play a huge role in the success of plants. Sugar Maples and their smaller cousins become a topic of note. Is there a "semi-dwarf" sugar maple? Hint, hint... The answer is yes. Imagine If You Will and Ghostbusters... The Ginkgo tops off the first half of the show. A globe blue spruce is the best way to spend $300 of your horticultural money. Matt HATES Forsythia and he tells you why. The 80's figure into the show and Matt relishes the use of 80's music to drive the point home. Hydrangeas have been miniaturized. So have Smokebush - much to the happiness of many. Perennial geraniums are some of the most well-behaved, contained little mounders in your garden. Yellow coneflowers are compared to Black Eyed Susans. DELPHINIUMS CAN GET REALLY BIG!Why plant miniatures!? Jack, Lynne and Matt discuss. Tune in. Looking to book a consult for your property? Sometimes it doesnt need to be anything big or elaborate to make an obvious shift in your reality. Every single year, I start with the Feel It First process, where I get clear on the life I want to live, then extract the desires I want to receive within that year. I focus on how I want to feel, and how I will feel when the desires materilize, and then spend the whole year find ways to feel those emotions in the present moment...in my day to day. But last year I made a SIMPLE tweak. And the speed at which my life changed was phenomenal. It was the year that so much shifted for me, right up to the very last minute! I am excited to share this shift with you inside todays podcast episode. Even more excited for you to apply it to your life and rituals!!! Dive in and let me know how this resonates. PS: Waitlist for The Feel It First Experience is now open!! Make sure you join to receive the best price and an exclusive bonus!! YAY! BOOK A BREAKTHROUGH BREATHWORK SESSION
Let's talk about how to form new habits that stick. Okay, okay, I'm curious… raise your hand if you were totally fired up at the beginning of this month to start afresh, change your life, or maybe flip one or two bad habits into better ones? Yup, me too. Now, keep your hand raised if you stuck with it all? Energetically, I just felt a ton of hands went down all around the world… woof, me too! I think if we step back and zoom out a bit, we'd see that there is so much more at play here then what we thought at first glance. Why do we, as humans, seem to have a hard time setting and sticking with new habits? First off, let's look at the data. Many studies have been done on New Year's resolutions but let's take a look at this one. John Norcross of the National Library of Medicine states that people typically have an 81% failure rate when it comes to their New Year's resolutions. 81%!! That's basically saying, 4 out of 5 people who set one don't stick with them, but rather fall back into their old habits and patterns before they know it. But why is that? Author James Clear (of Atomic Habits) has some ideas here… he believes there are 5 common mistakes that cause new habits to fail: Trying to change everything at once Instead, try to pick one thing and do it well. Starting with a habit that is too big It's better to make this new habit super small and easy where you just can't say no. Seeking a result, not a ritual …meaning it's better to focus on changing the behavior, not the outcome. So, to translate… if you've got a goal to read 20 books this year, you focus on the fact that you are now someone who reads a book for the last 10 minutes of your day, right before bed. Make sense? Not changing your environment Rather, consider building an environment that promotes good habits. As James puts it… “it is nearly impossible to remain positive all of the time if you are constantly surrounded by negative people.” Assuming small changes don't add up. James suggests just trying to “get one percent better each day.” That's it, simple. Teeny tiny incremental behavior changes each and every day are the true way to get to where you want to go. You can do this, I believe in you. It's time to SIMPLIFY. Show notes available with all links mentioned here: https://www.thesimplifiers.com/posts/b154-how-to-form-new-habits-that-stick-all-star

It's getting emotional at camp and for good reason. As the number of castaways dwindles, the real bonds and relationships that have formed are more fraught than ever, leading Genevieve and Teeny to question everything. Jeff, Jay and Charlie examine the insecurities that any Survivor relationship has and how the high pressure can lead to magnificent personal growth. Then, they dive into how a rice negotiation turned into a wild trade for Shots in the Dark, and what it meant for players like Sam, who are playing from the bottom. Jeff also answers why he made the choice to accept the trade, and whether or not he thinks it will come back to haunt the gameplay or the players. Later, the rain pours down at Tribal and Jeff reveals why he loves it, who keeps all the fires going, and whether or not they've ever postponed Tribal due to weather. And finally, Charlie gets into the strategy behind jury management, as another castaway is sent to the jury bench to decide who becomes Sole Survivor. Learn more about your ad choices.
