Carts and King swing by the TRIA studio for a marathon summer vibe check in the State of Hockey. The guys talk about their summer plans so far, the never ending trolling feed from the Stanley Cup Champions, the NHL Draft, shaking up free agency, and obviously the vibe check since some major Wild pieces are currently without signed deals. Can King get any sleep when the kids are out for the night? I think he'll feel much better when Rossi and Kaprizov "make it home safely," and he can relax. Hope you can enjoy a wonderful summer pod to hold you over until the Minnesota State Fair. Details to be announced in the coming weeks.
This segment on the Retail Fast Five podcast, sponsored by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Simbe, Mirakl, Infios, Clear Demand, and Ocampo Capital, explores Wegmans' smart cart pilot. Wegmans pilots Instacart's AI-powered Caper Carts at their Syracuse store for seamless checkout and spending tracking. Anne remains "mid" on smart carts, seeing them as a retail media play rather than essential retail tech, while Chris questions if this expensive capital investment will ever scale effectively.

Can your brand win the digital cart? In today's grocery game, it's not about who owns the shelf, it's about who wins the cart. On this episode of Brand Slam, Ryan Garvey, Senior Director and Head of Midmarket, Growth, and Non-Endemic Sales at Instacart, dives into what it takes to compete in a digital-first world where convenience, personalization and timing rule. The grocery experience has transformed, and with it, the path to purchase. Grocery shopping has gone mobile. Every add-to-cart moment is influenced by ad placements, shopper data and personalized recommendations. For brands, that means the competition is no longer just on the aisle but inside the app. The path to purchase? Rewritten. Every tap of “add to cart” is powered by data, driven by intent and shaped by strategic ad placements. Brands that once battled for endcaps are now fighting for screen space, and Instacart has become the field where that battle plays out. Ryan unpacks how Instacart is helping brands of all sizes break through the noise. It's not just about showing up; it's about showing up with relevance, at the exact moment a shopper is ready to act. Through smarter targeting, better insights and shoppable moments, the app is turning consideration into conversion. Ryan also shares the story behind Instacart's nostalgic Super Bowl campaign, a character-packed, joy-filled spot featuring icons like the Kool-Aid Man, the Jolly Green Giant and the Pillsbury Doughboy. The goal? Spark emotion. Drive recall. Make brands unforgettable. As consumer habits shift and discovery becomes more dynamic, Ryan emphasizes the importance of using first-party data to guide strategy and build lasting relationships. Whether it's a legacy name or a challenger brand, the rules are changing—and the most agile marketers are finding new ways to compete. Interested in a particular topic or want to be a guest? This is the third part of a three part series on modern shopping carts. Part one was all the kinds of features that you should have with your shopping cart, so you look modern and it automates things for you. And part two was specifically on the automation, things that can save you enormous amounts of time and make you a lot more money. Now, this part three is how you can save a ton of money by having all of these kinds of features that you would have to buy external programs, for which I have done, and spent tens of thousands of dollars on them over the year, and get rid of them, because it's all included in a modern day shopping cart system. Most of us in radio engineering have worked with broadcast cart machines. While it’s been a good 25 or 30 years since we’ve had them in our studios, we’ll never forget the pleasure - and occasional pain - of using them and maintaining them. But how did cart machines come to be? Were they always like the ones we grew up with in the 70s and 80s? Or did the development come with fits and starts? Andy Rector worked with broadcast carts nearly from the very beginning of their existence. He’s been interviewed many times and provided historical presentations to SBE groups, AES sections, and others. We’re delighted to have Andy Rector join us on this TWiRT episode to look at the early days of broadcast cart machines and the early technologies employed.
