Tiana Epps-Johnson is the Executive Director of the Center for Tech and Civic Life, an organization which provides technical and financial assistance to election workers nationwide. If this sounds like it should be uncontroversial, hang on to your hats, folks. It is anything but. After her work in 2020 to help election workers conduct the presidential election under horrendously difficult COVID conditions and with inadequate budgets, Epps-Johnson found herself the subject of lawsuits, investigations by state attorneys general, and other forms of harassment. None of these have come to anything, but it's been extremely costly for the organization. She joined Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes and Lawfare Senior Editor Quinta Jurecic to tell the story. What does the Center for Tech and Civic Life really do? What was the nature of the attacks she faced? How much did it cost her organization to defend them, and how did she pay it? And what does it all mean for the future of safe elections in the United States?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Conservative leaders have rallied behind Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker, following a report that he paid for an abortion for an ex-girlfriend. It's one of the first October surprises to drop ahead of the high-stakes midterm elections. The federal government has a history of underfunding our election infrastructure, even though the people who run state and local election departments play a critical role in our democracy. Tiana Epps-Johnson, co-founder of the Center for Tech and Civic Life, tells us why America's voting system needs an upgrade. And in headlines: North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that could chip away at the Voting Rights Act, and European regulators voted to standardize charging cables for portable devices.Show Notes:The Daily Beast: “‘Pro-Life' Herschel Walker Paid for Girlfriend's Abortion” – https://tinyurl.com/ya2m7z8aCenter for Tech and Civic Life – https://www.techandciviclife.org/Fat Bear Week 2022 – http://www.fatbearweek.org/Vote Save America: Every Last Vote – https://votesaveamerica.com/every-last-vote/Crooked Coffee is officially here. Last year, roughly 8000 election departments across the country pulled off the near-impossible task of holding safe and secure elections in the middle of a global pandemic. They did it despite gross underfunding from Congress, crumbling infrastructure, and threats of violence. In a wealthy democracy like the United States, local election administrators shouldn't have to rely on private grant money to cover the cost of things like pens or postage for mail-in ballots, but that's exactly what happened last year. In order to find out why America's election infrastructure is so neglected, and what needs to be done to fix it, Amanda talks to Tiana Epps-Johnson, the founder and executive director of the Center for Tech and Civic Life, a national, nonpartisan org that helps local election administrators across the country modernize their processes and cover the budget gaps left by inadequate funding. Tiana Epps-Johnson and her co-founders had an ambitious and critical goal; to simplify and modernize U.S. elections. To reach this goal, they established The Center for Tech and Civic Life (CTCL), whose data has been accessed over 250 million times by U.S. voters through partnerships with local election committees, Google, and Facebook. On this podcast, you'll hear from Tiana, the co-founder and Executive Director of CTCL, about the organizations' humble beginnings, how its work became crucial to fight election misinformation, and how Tiana's courage for this work has been passed down through generations. The truth of the matter is this: we don't know what state our country will be in when November rolls around--if we'll be in quarantine, if coronavirus will be back with a vengeance--we just don't know. That's why Tiana Epps-Johnson, Executive Director of the Center for Tech and Civic Life, says we need a plan that involves technology to lessen the need for people to show up in person on Election Day.
