The Director of Operations at the Electoral Commission of Namibia, Zenia Klazen has highlighted the importance of coupling electronic voting systems with voter and civic education. Klazen was speaking at the conclusion of the E-Voting Conference in Cape Town. The conference seeks to initiate a public conversation about the possibility of introducing e-voting in South Africa. Klazen says the introduction of electronic voter machines (EVMs) in Namibia, has enhanced the polling process, accurate results and has decreased human error. For more on the feasibility of electronic voting systems in South Africa, Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Ground Work Collective Founder and CEO, Mbali Ntuli.
There's a real-world experiment in governance happening that you've probably not heard about. It involves decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). These online collectives are trying to run billion-dollar enterprises using direct democracy and a controversial mechanism known as “liquid democracy”—where you can delegate your vote to anyone, at any time. Are these DAOs and blockchain experiments revolutionizing democracy—or just reinventing the wheel?Political scientist Andrew Hall (Stanford GSB), has been studying these systems to understand if delegated voting increases participation, improves decision-making, or simply creates new forms of power concentration. What happens when participation is low, and decisions are made by a few super-delegates?

In this episode of the podcast, Niall is joined by Professor Seth Barrett Tillman from Maynooth University's Law and Criminology department to discuss Ireland's proportional representation system and its impact on elections. With voters feeling increasingly disillusioned, Seth breaks down the mechanics of the system, its strengths, and its glaring flaws.Seth challenges the idea that proportional representation always results in a fair outcome, explaining: “Proportional representation makes sure that minorities have at least a voice, even if they don't really have an element of control.” He also highlights the stark voting disparities across the country, pointing out that in Kerry, a candidate needs over 13,000 votes to reach the quota, while in Dublin Central, it takes just 6,500. “That is, in my view, very unfair,” he states. As the conversation unfolds, Seth and Niall debate whether low-quality votes deep in the count are undermining democracy, how the lack of transparency in Ireland's system obscures accountability, and why the electoral structure favors urban constituencies over rural voters. They also touch on international comparisons, from the U.S. Electoral College to mandatory voting in Australia.Niall shares his own frustrations from running in the European elections, comparing the convoluted counting system to the ‘pub debate logic' of a World Cup qualifier—where one team's fate depends on a complex mix of other results. Meanwhile, Seth explores whether shifting from population-based representation to voter-based constituencies could bring a fairer balance to Ireland's political landscape. Is the system broken, or is it simply misunderstood? Would Ireland benefit from a two-party system, or is coalition politics the best we can hope for? And more importantly—should you really be allowed to win a seat because someone thought you "looked nice"? Tune in for a fascinating deep dive into the heart of Ireland's electoral process.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold discovered leaked passwords for Colorado's voting system five days before it became public and didn't change the codes until the controversy exploded into view. Why it matters: The lack of transparency is intensifying scrutiny of the state's voting system — including from former President Trump's campaign — and amplifying the blowback against the state's top election official at a crucial moment. Catch up quick: An employee at the Secretary of State's Office mistakenly posted a spreadsheet to its website that included a hidden tab containing what are known as BIOS passwords used to adjust the voting system's settings, according to a statement Tuesday.

Colorado's Democrat governor said Thursday that he is providing state aircraft and vehicles to help with changing voting system passwords that were accidentally leaked on a state website. The mistake comes amid skepticism of voting systems, even though U.S. election nationwide remain fair and reliable. The passwords were left on a spreadsheet online for months, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced on Tuesday. Now, local, state and federal agencies are working together to change the passwords by Thursday evening, and analyze logs to ensure there hasn't been any tampering.

Gene Hamilton is the Executive Director and General Counsel at America First Legal. Janelle King is a member of the Georgia State Election Board. Gene Hamilton is exposing a major flaw in our national voting system. The federal voter registration form comes in 21 different languages and has no system of verification. All you have to do is sign that you are a citizen of the United States. America First Legal is suing all 15 counties in Arizona to ensure that proper verification is completed after an individual claims to be a U.S. citizen on the federal form. As of now, Arizona is refusing to remove illegals from voter rolls and have 42,000 voters on federal voter rolls who would not or could not present proof of citizenship. Gene breaks down all the efforts America First Legal is taking to keep our elections secure. Janelle King gives us an update on Georgia and what to expect for the 2024 presidential election. After legislation SB 189 and SB 202, the Secretary of State has been removed from the Election Board. As they navigate this separation, Janelle gives us the full rundown on how Georgia is preparing for an accurate, free and fair election.
