Tim Fite is one of those gems you thank the universe for bringing you together (I thank Ezerd Land for connecting us!) Tim Fite - called a “cultural gadfly” by the New York Times and “ferally original” by the New Yorker - used to be an artsy rapper. Now he's just artsy. He doesn't drink. He doesn't do drugs. He prefers solitude/contemplation to hobnobbing/affectation. This preference affords Fite the time/freedom to make large scale, compositionally complex, allegorical, black and white drawings that occasionally have a musical or performative component. Fite believes creativity, communication, compassion, and hard work are the keys to fostering a more benevolent and inclusive society, and hopes his art can contribute to that end. https://www.timfite.com/ https://www.instagram.com/timfite/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/in-the-art-scene/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/in-the-art-scene/support

Dude Cervantes is spinning direct from the as yet unreleased vinyl in the studio today. It's a cover of a classic and not to be missed. The cover artwork is excellent and FTBOTRB deems this an essential record to your collection. In fact, you can watch and listen to Dude Cervantes' latest release in the video that accompanies these show notes. Excellent news all round. However, that's not the only Cover Shot on today's show. Tobin brings us Saint Mesa and a cover of a now modern classic from a now legendary band. It Smells Like Teen Spirit in the studio. Tobin also brings us the bookend artiste this week which is The Cave Singers and two brilliant tracks is what we have from them. Opening the show is Swim Club and closing the show for us is Beach House. Firm favourites here at Record Box HQ already. Big Fox are also a feature of Tobin's musical snouting this week with their luminary track All I'm Trying – listen on to find out more about this exciting band. Firstly, Bearded magazine said of Red River Dialect "a band that can actually play" and their track Piano is no exception. As a result this track promotes something of a discussion about the classification of the piano – Richard stating it is in fact a percussion instrument thus opening the floodgates of pedantry. Please email us with your pedantic summation of this. Secondly, the man who uses samples of only records that he has bought for a dollar, it's Tim Fite. This track has certainly won over Tobin and he even states that he is Tim Fite's newest and possibly biggest fan. We have the usual music commentary and nonsensical musings to accompany the music that has caught our attention this week. Oh, and did we mention Dude Cervantes is playing on the show?

Since the 1930s, delighted throngs have gathered just outside Linesville, Pennsylvania, to toss bread to a writhing stew of carp and ducks at the Linesville Spillway. The carp are so thick that mallard ducks literally hop, skip and jump on the fishes' backs to compete for a slice of bread. Famous worldwide as the place “where ducks walk on the fish,” the Spillway draws as many as a half-million tourists a year, part of a small but critical tourism economy bolstered by the sale of day-old Wonder Bread from bread shanties that line local streets. But recently, the people of Linesville learned about some big changes planned for the spillway. Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister paid a visit and, in collaboration with musician Tim Fite, have the fishy tale of the fight for the right to throw bread - the latest in their Song+Story series. (Produced in 2008; description from the original broadcast.)

Tim Fite mixes hip hop, folk, rock and blues with a heavy dose of humor and politics. Tune in to hear his conversation with Jim and Greg, plus a sampling of his genre-defying musical style. Jim and Greg will also review the latest from sister act The Breeders.
My Brightest Diamond is playing at the Ladies Literary Club in downtown Grand Rapids on November 10 at 8:00pm. Tim Fite will open.
