Legendary music artists The Supremes and Harry Belafonte passed through there. It was a place of prestige and pride for Philadelphia's Black population. Such was the early legacy of the Nile Swim Club, which, in the late 1950s, opened in response to racial segregation in the borough of Yeadon. But with the passing of time, the club's allure began to change. Declines in enrollment became so sharp that Nile was ultimately forced to declare bankruptcy. In recent years, benefactors have emerged to save the club, and reset its role in the community it serves. West Chester University Professor of History Dr. Bob Kodosky, author of The Nile Swim Club of Yeadon: A History, shares stories about the club's past, and looks ahead to its future. Look, there are enough excellent brunch restaurants in San Diego that waiting hours for a seat at Morning Glory—Little Italy's rose-hued bastion of breakfast pork belly and morning booze—feels, admittedly, a little silly. Our out-of-town friends gaze forlornly at happy, well-fed-looking strangers while we assure them that the forthcoming pancakes will be worth the delay. “There's a Champagne vending machine,” we promise. Maybe it's the pink tile ceiling. Or the trippy mirrored bathroom. But that doesn't explain why we'll join similar queues for a speakeasy in La Jolla or a hi-fi music bar in North Park. The common thread, of course, is the group that owns them: Consortium Holdings, the culinary and social company behind 19 of San Diego's buzziest restaurants and bars. It all started with an East Village burger bar, and now… well, soon you'll be able to lay down your head at Consortium's first crack at an overnight concept. Last year, CH purchased the Lafayette Hotel & Swim Club and set about revamping the iconic hipster haunt from top to bottom. When the joint reopens its doors this year, hotel guests (and all us locals) can line up at seven fresh food and drink establishments. We sat down with their director of education and development (and founding member), Anthony Schmidt, for a breakdown of CH's ascent to local glory. Anthony talks about his past life as an associate professor of speech and debate at SDSU, where he'd lecture in early morning classes after moonlighting as a bartender by night. His early years behind the bar taught him that great drinks aren't merely about precision and technique. Anthony believes that CH owes their hold on San Diego's heart (and Instagram feed) partly to a willingness to invest in the next generation of mixologists. “The greatest bartenders in the world make other bartenders better,” he says. In food news, SDM's 2022 Restaurant of the Year—chef Travis Swikard's Callie—is opening up a new rooftop event space in April. Common Theory Public House is coming to Otay Ranch and will be joined by Realm of 52 Remedies and Woomiok next door. Lastly, the team behind Azuki Sushi is opening omakase-only restaurant Kinme on March 15, replacing Hachi Ramen in Banker's Hill. Anthony and Troy both raved about birria on “Two People, Fifty Bucks.” For Anthony, Fernandez Birrieria's rich tendon taco is where it's at; Troy went for Birrieria Don Rafa's sauce-drenched birria quesadilla. David headed to Gaslamp Lumpia Factory for chicken lumpia and a pork sinigang soup. See ya next week!

(Lander, WY) - The Lander Swim Club was in for a treat on Saturday, January 7 with a day-long clinic run by Zach Apple, gold medal winner in the 4x100m freestyle relay and 4×100m medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Apple poses with the Lander Swim Club 12 and older group. h/t Vince Tropea The clinic took place at the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center, and was split up into two sections based on age. The young swimmers got a chance to get autographs from and take photos with Apple, received some tips and training, and also had the chance to field questions for the Olympian later in the day as well. With a strong and storied winning swimming record both past and present, it's no wonder Apple agreed to make the trip, and he told County 10 what the experience is like to be in Lander teaching the next generation of swimmers. For nearly four decades I've heard about or experienced firsthand the fallout of dysfunctional leadership at swim clubs. Club boards splinter or run amok. Bad coaches go rogue. Good coaches suffer at the hands of egotistical board members. Every situation imaginable occurs. The worst is when you learn a club board never really managed the oversight of a team's finances, and suddenly the entire swim team is on red alert fearful the pool doors will be locked. Her company provides actionable guidance and support to help clubs to shift from old mindsets to running their clubs like a business. A big maintenance bill stands in the way of keeping Christchurch's Wharenui Pool open. It's likely the 110 year old pool will be decommissioned when the new Metro Sports Facility opens in 2022.Wharenui Swim Club President Chris Averill told John McDonald they've been told by the council they have to go it alone. He says they will do a feasibility study to see if it can be saved.“If we simply can't afford the money to stay, then we have to look at an option, because the last thing we want it to do is to take over a facility and then have a million dollars of maintenance to fix it up, it will ruin the club.”LISTEN ABOVE

I spoke with Rockwood Swim Club in St. Louis, Missouri as they’re one of many swim clubs working through the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 2 coaches on the call as well as 3 swimmers, ranging in age, to make things really interesting and give a lot of different perspectives. Topics covered included how they’re feeling during this time stuck at home, how they’re coping with very little structure, and their favorite swimming memories. CSC has implemented routine Zoom dryland sessions for all age groups in an effort to keep them active, engaged, and connected. The group also discussed the importance of keeping a schedule, especially waking up when you normally would and having some sort of exercise in when you would normally have practice. In 1962, three men escaped Alcatraz - something that was supposedly impossible. They were never seen again, and people still debate whether they survived. We walk through the escape, and a few other escapes that prove it was entirely possible. In fact, the first recorded escape attempt was a partial success - with one man swimming across the bay in the 1860s.

Dude Cervantes is spinning direct from the as yet unreleased vinyl in the studio today. It's a cover of a classic and not to be missed. The cover artwork is excellent and FTBOTRB deems this an essential record to your collection. In fact, you can watch and listen to Dude Cervantes' latest release in the video that accompanies these show notes. Excellent news all round. However, that's not the only Cover Shot on today's show. Tobin brings us Saint Mesa and a cover of a now modern classic from a now legendary band. It Smells Like Teen Spirit in the studio. Tobin also brings us the bookend artiste this week which is The Cave Singers and two brilliant tracks is what we have from them. Opening the show is Swim Club and closing the show for us is Beach House. Firm favourites here at Record Box HQ already. Big Fox are also a feature of Tobin's musical snouting this week with their luminary track All I'm Trying – listen on to find out more about this exciting band. Firstly, Bearded magazine said of Red River Dialect "a band that can actually play" and their track Piano is no exception. As a result this track promotes something of a discussion about the classification of the piano – Richard stating it is in fact a percussion instrument thus opening the floodgates of pedantry. Please email us with your pedantic summation of this. Secondly, the man who uses samples of only records that he has bought for a dollar, it's Tim Fite. This track has certainly won over Tobin and he even states that he is Tim Fite's newest and possibly biggest fan. We have the usual music commentary and nonsensical musings to accompany the music that has caught our attention this week. Oh, and did we mention Dude Cervantes is playing on the show?

ORIGINALLY RECORDED: DECEMBER 18TH, 2017 Three years ago, a lone anime fan had a random idea. She decided to talk about some English dub announcements for her channel. Little did she know, those vlogs of hers would grow into something innovative and fun! For the past three years, you've seen us grow and learn through experience, and as a tight knit family. You've also seen us yammer on and make stupid jokes every now and again, but let's face it you guys love us being idiots. Now, we've hit another milestone as a group of nerdy friends. Last year, we hit a thousand subscribers along with started new side series and had fun adventures together. This year, we've finally hit milestone that was three years in the making, our 100th episode! But what, pray tell, are we going to cover for this occasion? The relationships that form among five women in college form the basis of the play “The Dixie Swim Club.” Stan Strickler has this review of a production at Corn Stock Theatre, for Peoria Public Radio and the Live Theatre League of Peoria. Opinions expressed are those of the reviewer, not those of Peoria Public Radio or the Live Theatre League. Rarely do men get together to talk and socialize. Women however, can congregate, converse, and just be together. The Dixie Swim Club currently playing at Corn Stock Theater illustrates this concept, as five women congregate annually for their swim team reunion. They talk about problems with their husbands, raising children, and their ambitions. But mostly they just relate to each other, strengthening the bonds which brought them together. The play opens twenty-two years after the women graduated from college and traces them over the next thirty-three years. All of them were on a college swim team.
